Pam Geller becomes more fun if you assume her entire blog is just a gigantic ARG

Claiming she's being hunted by CAIR would support this perspective

maybe they'll "kidnap" her and she'll tweet from inside the trunk of a car as they whisk her away to their secret C.O.B.R.A.-esque technodrome

Private Prisons Spend Millions On Lobbying To Put More People In Jail

Government spending on corrections has soared since 1997 by 72 percent, up to $74 billion in 2007. And the private prison industry has raked in tremendous profits. Last year the two largest private prison companies — Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) and GEO Group — made over $2.9 billion in revenue.

Nice little article about the discovery of rogue planets, and also covers the explosion in numbers of exoplanets known:

Astronomical!

The author also asks the question I have posed here at times:

You may wonder at this point why something so Earth shattering as the discovery of innumerable planets has not caused more excitement in the broad public. One reason, I would suggest, is that scientific discoveries take a while to register in the popular consciousness. In 1925, the astronomer Edwin Hubble first confirmed the existence of galaxies other than our own; four years later, he showed that they were moving apart from one another, supplying astonishing evidence of an expanding universe. Time magazine put him on its cover only in February 1948.

Another reason is I think, through television and film, that the public has been desensitized to the magnitude of these discoveries.

U.S. Jews not able to fly on Delta flights to Saudi Arabia

Beware the source of the outrage......

Saudi Arabia bans anyone with an Israeli stamp in their passport from entering the country, even in transit. Many Jews believe the kingdom has also withheld visas from travelers with Jewish-sounding names.

Religious items such as Bibles that are not related to Islam may be confiscated at the airport.

Colby M. May, senior counsel of the American Center for Law and Justice, a conservative legal group founded by religious broadcaster Pat Robertson, said his office is trying to determine if the agreement runs afoul of U.S. law.

The Magic Kingdom has strict rules about Jews and Israelis entering the country. I suspect this is another Sharia/Islamification/dhimmi bogus story.

In a statement to Religion News Service on Thursday, Delta said it "does not discriminate, nor do we condone discrimination against any protected class of passenger in regards to age, race, nationality, religion, or gender."

The airline, which did not deny the new policy, insisted that it has no control over who may fly to Saudi Arabia.

Free market fucktardery at work. How in the hell are Repubs ever taken seriously when they start with the deficit crap (among all the other crap)?

From the Justice Policy Institute's report referenced in Varek Reith's link:

Recent giving, when analyzed by political party, reinforces the lack of adherence to a political ideology. Although on the whole, most private prison company contributions have gone to
Republican candidates (67.2 percent), 2010 saw the majority of contributions from these private prison companies going toward federal Democratic candidates (63.4 percent).

A good way to prevent bipartisan action on a national disgrace like the 'justice' system is to get voters to reflexively blame the problem on 'fucktards' of the opposition (cf. Jonah Goldberg's book Liberal Fascism).

Which the professional manipulators and special-interest lobbyists well know.

"It's worth asking: Where in the world has President Obama been for the last month? Where is he? What does he propose? What is he willing to do to reduce the debt? And to avoid this crisis, that's building on his watch?" Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said today.

"He's the one in charge. I think most Americans think it's about time he started acting like it. Does half of Tampa bay even know they have a hockey team, let alone WON a Cup a few years ago? Judging by the tens of fans at Rays game, I'd have to say "No."

Lightning do well attendance wise. And I was at Game 7 for the finals. And my ticket is signed by the coach and captain (Torts and Dave) I also have a pic with me, the cup and the coach.

I recall growing up as a kid in Boston

The old Boston Garden held 13,909 for hockey

This was back in the "original 6" teams days

The Bruins and Rangers would vie for last place EVERY YEAR, yet the Garden sold out night after night

Meanwhile, the Celtics were winning title after title after title and during the regular season the place was half empty

Boston a hockey town, much !?!?!?

Delta issues statement: Delta on Diversity

...some have raised questions about whether Saudi Arabian Airlines’ membership in SkyTeam means Delta is adopting any type of policies that could present barriers to travel for some passengers, including Jewish customers. For this particular concern, it’s important to realize that visa requirements to enter any country are dictated by that nation’s government, not the airlines, and they apply to anyone entering the country regardless of whether it’s by plane, bus or train.

We, like all international airlines, are required to comply with all applicable laws governing entry into every country we serve. You as passengers are responsible for obtaining the necessary travel documents, such as visas and certification of required vaccinations, and we’re responsible for making sure that you have the proper documentation before you board.

Delta doesn't currently fly to Saudi Arabia but next year it will have a new code-sharing agreement with the Saudi airlines through the SkyTeam network. That means folks may be booking through Delta but still flying a Saudi airline.

Egypt's left threatens 'million-strong' protest to stop Islamists winning power

Egyptian activists have threatened to bring mass pro-democracy protests back to Cairo, with a "million-strong" occupation of Tahrir Square planned for 8 July unless the ruling army generals abandon their current "roadmap" to democracy.

In an increasingly rancorous debate, which has developed into a proxy war between the nation's fledgling Islamist and secular political forces, 40 different liberal and leftist movements have joined forces to demand that plans to hold elections in September are dropped.

Campaigners fear the existing post-Mubarak transition programme – which would see September's ballot held under an amended version of Egypt's existing constitution and then allow members of parliament to oversee the writing of a new constitution – may cede permanent power to the Muslim Brotherhood and other religious groups, who are expected to dominate the poll.

I go into to the corner store for a bottle of cold water, and notice that one brand is significantly cheaper than the other brands for the same volume.

I ask the proprietor "What's up with that"? He tells me that that brand is French, and no one wants to buy it because of the whole war/politics thing going on.

I reply "Oh, but they're perfectly content to drive around a car full of oil from the middle east, eh"?

So I buy the French stuff, 'cuz I'm frugal like that.

Two examples of Behemoth style boycotting:

1) I don't by produce from Mexico because a) poor standards that have led to hep. and ecoli outbreaks, and b) I prefer to support my local farmers, and there are tons of 'em in my parts.

2) I stopped going to one of my favorite restaurants because ONE TIME they brought me a glass of water that had a very visible lipstick imprint on it. Having worked in restaurant kitchens before, I know that if something that obvious slips by, much worse things are going on.

Rick Perry - secessionist teabagger conservative...worked for Al Gore?

Another, better way of looking at Perry’s political success is to recognize that he has an uncanny ability to position himself to take advantage of political opportunities.

Perry, after all, entered the Texas House in 1984 as a Democrat. He won reelection as a Democrat in 1986 and 1988, the same year he served as state chairman of Al Gore’s presidential campaign.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry made a joke at a Latino convention that an appointee’s name sounds like a bottle of tequila — and it didn’t go over very well.

The Associated Press reported that Perry, a Republican considering a run for president in 2012, made the comments Thursday in San Antonio at the 28th annual National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials conference. (Report: Perry likely to jump in this summer)

Perry reportedly joked that he liked how a man named Jose Cuevas had been appointed to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission because his name sounds like Jose Cuervo, a brand of tequila. The joke fell flat.

“Perry struggled to regain his confidence as he described Texas as a land of opportunity,” the Associated Press reported.

in other news, researchers confirm that republican politicians are getting measurably stupider

273 jaunte  Thu, Jun 23, 2011 7:10:46pm

re: #272 engineer dog

Perry has no plan b.

The politicians and public policy professionals were unimpressed with his stock-speech touting the state's business-friendly climate. Perry often stopped for applause and heard only the clink of forks on plates as he stared out at the crowd, a stark contrast to the jubilant reception he's received at recent Republican events. Many in the audience had never heard of him before.

The organization released a study Thursday predicting that 12.2 million Latinos will cast a ballot in the 2012 presidential election, representing a 26 percent increase from 2008. Latinos will account for 8.7 percent of the national electorate, the group's study predicted.[Link: www.bakersfieldnow.com...]

Not really true. The Polish Home Army did make a couple of attempts to aid the Warsaw Ghetto fighters in 1943, but these were strictly small scale. The Poles decided against a general uprising, not because of Anti-Semitism* but because they did not feel the time to be right. Despite this, those Ghetto survivors who managed to stay hidden in the ghetto's ruins did emerge to fight along the Home Army when the latter did rise in August 1944. Most of them sadly died when Stalin halted the Red Army's advance and let the Germans crush the uprising.

*= This is not to say that the Polish Home Army did not contain anti-Semites. It did (Jew hate was very common in Poland at the time), but the main factor that influenced the Poles not to act was that in 1943 the Red army was still far away from Warsaw, so any uprising would have ultimately been destroyed.

On a side note, one LGF feature I'd kind of like to see (available to registered users only) would be a special icon that would identify those individuals who have been shown the door - maybe a deflated football, or something similar. Memo from head of ICE urges deportation priority list

DALLAS - The Pew Hispanic Center says 11 million undocumented immigrants live in the United States. Last year, the U.S. deported nearly 400,000 people living in the country illegally.

A new memo released from the head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement is now encouraging a priority list. The memo could be welcome news to a number of local immigrants, mostly students and the elderly, set for deportation.

[...]

Dated last Friday, the memo was from Morton to all the regional directors, special agents and chief counsel.

"Because the agency is confronted with more violations than its resources can address, the agency must regularly exercise prosecutorial discretion," it read.

"Felons," "gang members," "repeat offenders" first.

But, the following cases should prompt special consideration, inlcuding "minors and elderly individuals," those "in the U.S. since childhood" and those who "have or are pursuing a college or advanced degree at a legitimate institution of higher education."

This is the third in a series of memos from the the ICE agency director.

Immigration activist Ralph Isenberg, of Dallas, said this is easily the most declarative.

He got a B.

The kids that got A's obviously did not do the majority of the work themselves.

What are you gonna do?

Congrats to your boy! Did you put a pix on the pages?

Hell, they have corn in Chicago itself. Illinois grows more corn than any other state save Iowa.

Sorry I was gone for a while. Firefox 5 took some time to install. So far, it seems a good improvement.

Not so hot. I've had 3 same day possibilities, and all of them flopped. The good news is that I'm doing better in finding leads and my lining up end users (my current event deals in IT for military health) is going well. I expect to have another vendor sale before the month is out and I hope to add an end-user as well. Tomorrow is packed with call-backs and I know I can get the deals done.

Speaking of corn... what an amazing plant, especially if we play with the genes:

Synthetic collagen from maize has human properties

Synthetic collagen has a wide range of applications in reconstructive and cosmetic surgery and in the food industry. For proper function in animals a certain number of prolines within the protein need to be hydroxylated. BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Biotechnology reports that for the first time the α1 chain of type 1 collagen has been produced in maize with similar levels of proline hydroxylation to human collagen.

Most collagen used is derived from animals but there are risks associated with this collagen containing infectious agents or being rejected by the body. To avoid this problem several laboratory–based systems have been developed using plants to produce collagen. Plant-derived recombinant proteins should have lower contamination and fewer infectious agents, but these systems are unable to make modifications to the protein essential for proper function in human cells.

Working in collaboration with industrial partners researchers added a gene, which codes for the α1 chain of human CI (hCI α1), to maize along with genes which make human prolyl 4-hydroxylase. This second protein was able to hydroxylate approximately the same percentage of prolines in the recombinant collagen α1 chain, produced in maize, as seen for human collagen made in human cells.

Dr Kan Wang from Iowa State University said, "Producing human collagen in maize seeds is an inexpensive alternative to using animal-derived collagen. The seeds are easy to grow, process, and store. Our transgenic plant system is also able to produce a protein with human-like modifications making it a better choice for a wide range of applications."

Now we just need to add genes for the plant to grow ears and voice boxes (both of which are made out of collagen) and they tell us exactly when they need watering.

That's actually a topic of major contention amongst Trek fans, mostly because of so much contradiction between series. The oft-mentioned credit is seen as a form of electronic currency, at least until the advent of replicators, when the need for material wealth just sort of evaporated.

Er, I mean, let them come! I shall slay them all with my bat'leth!

So lets see, The Groom's party was dressed in Romulan-style outfits complete with sashes, etc, and the bride's party was dressed as Federation. The main trick was to make the accents Trek related and not go overboard (so no prosthetics for the Romulans for instance), but rather to go with pins and such. Once we get pictures I'll post some (with WUB's permission since he's in it too).

I'd say it was classy because it didn't have the camp over-the-topness that trek weddings usually have (especially the damn sad Klingon ones).

Cheesy things we did not have: Fake Trek booze, prosthetics, made up languages.

Things we did have: Iconography (Romulan, Federation, IDICs), snappy outfits, excellent Lebanese food.

The Federation was there. Think of it as a peace summit. Star Trek is big on peace summits, and they do more good in Star Trek fiction than in real life. But that's because in fiction the good guys aren't represented by a bunch of diplomats who would rather give away the store and hope for the best than actually take a firm position.
