Avengers #10, Nov. 1964: The Avengers Break Up!

Obviously, they didn’t really break up because there’s a movie coming out

The Lizard Collection contains 56 issues of The Avengers, going all the way back to #2. Here’s one of the earliest issues, #10, published in November 1964, with a cover by Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers.

Super-hero groups like the Avengers were always arguing and bickering and fighting among themselves, and in issue #10 it got so bad they broke up — but of course, they got over it in time for issue #11.

Our copy’s in good condition; not mint, unfortunately, but even with a little wear and tear this is still a pretty valuable book — worth a lot more than the 12 cents I paid for it in 1964.

Not a lot of people can pull off green and purple, Immortus being one of those who can't.

Giant-Man is on a lot of the Silver Age Avengers covers, but he doesn't seem to have made the transition into movies. Nobody cares about Giant-Man any more.

Maybe he had a contract dispute with Stan Lee.

Ant man is now just Dr Henry Pym. He went from Giant man, to Ant man, to Yellowjacket, and back and forth. Over time, they said his powers damaged him, so he couldn't change size anymore, but could change the size of other objects, so he could shrink a car down and carry it in his pocket or turn a pebble into a boulder.

Over course his greatest super power was he somehow was married to the Wasp. She didn't seem to make it into the movie either.

Always a chance for an appearance in an Avengers sequel, as you know that there will inevitably be one with all the raving reviews so far.

Not to mention that Hank Pym is not the most stable of characters, even when compared to the likes of Tony Stark or Bruce Banner. Not sure that the parents of America would like to explain to Timmy why the "hero" is beating up on his wife.

Yeah, one of the weird things about how Marvel's got its little movie empire set up right now is that some of the other prominent Avengers, like Spiderman or Wolverine, are segregated off into their own realities, such that you can't even make hat-tips to them.

That's because the X-Men and Spider-Man films were made with other studios, and a lot of rights and clearances are tied up there.

The new films have all been done by Marvel independently, which is why these characters have a unified 'verse while Spider-Man and Wolverine and other characters don't exist in their world.

How about this idea for a comic book?

A team made up of: A lesbian college student, A muscular latino, A muslim with telekinesis powers, A black MMA fighter and a small but lethally quick asian woman.

Their adversaries: A group of middle aged white men known as "The Cabal"

Yes, but the new Marvel cinematic universe is their own independent produciton. They produce and make the films themselves and Paramount (and now Disney) are distributing them.

The Scarlet Witch can't come to America. The Catholic League has a bounty on her head and William Donohue and Rick Santorum have let be know that if they catch her they're going to burn her at the stake.

I noticed a similarity between that comic book and a typical Fox News broadcast.. Its the teaser on the cover..

Featuring: THE TRULY DIFFERENT VILLAINY OF THE EVIL IMMORTUS!

What Fox News broadcast doesn't feature an attention grabbing lead-in just like that.. Featuring: THE TRULY DIFFERENT VILLAINY OF THE EVIL OBAMANUS!

Seems to be a week for VBIEDs around the world, This one was found near Newry in Northern Ireland:

Belfast, Northern Ireland (CNN) -- An abandoned van containing a device with 600 pounds of explosives was found in Newry, Northern Ireland, near the border with the Republic of Ireland, police said Saturday.

The device, believed to be linked to dissident IRA groups opposed to the peace process, was "fully primed and ready for use," police said.

The bomb, found late Thursday, was one of the biggest found in Northern Ireland, police said.

It could have caused "death and massive destruction" had it gone off, Chief Superintendent Alasdair Robinson told reporters in Ardmore.

"The device contained two blue barrels with 125kg of homemade explosives in each one, and a detonator -- all the equipment which meant this device was ready to go," he said.

"This was a very significant device -- twice the size of the bomb which was left at Newry Courthouse two years ago. If this had exploded it would have caused devastation.

"To put it in perspective, anyone within 50 meters of this device would have been killed and anyone within 100 meters, seriously injured."

Not a lot of people can pull off green and purple, Immortus being one of those who can't.

I was reading a remarkable piece a while back about a 'therapist' who believes, deeply, in recovered memories of Satanic abuse. One of her things is that Satanic clergy wear green and purple.

It was pointed out by commenters that these are actually common colors for villains in comic books to wear.

Which of these details is dependent on the other is, of course, going to depend on whether you believe in widespread Satanic abuse or not. (My hunch is that consciously or not, these people have connected the colors worn by the likes of Immortus with badness, and projected them into their own bizarre fantamemories. I suspect this 'therapist' would say that it only proves that the comic book artists are in on it too.)

No, I'm one of their secret assassins. But unlike the morons sent after the main heroes, I always get the job done. But my fees for going after superheroes are very high, and The Cabal does not yet consider Minoriteam enough of a threat to pay me to remove them.

Moreover, The Cabal figures that if Mitt Romney is elected all their problems with pesky superheroes will end, so right now they have committed the bulk of their Seekrit Eeevvill Slush Fund to a number of SuperPacs supporting Mitt.

It goes very well with my selling seats for defense conferences, as my job gives me enough contacts that I can quickly whatever hardware I need to accomplish any mission. It also allows me to find any inventor building gear for superheroes and neutralized them by inviting them to a conference. Once they get to the conference, The Cabal uses its influence to make sure they meet the right people, after which the inventor almost always turns on the heroes in exchange for a fat DoD contract and and startup funds from Bain Capital to mass produce their gadgets. This lasts for a couple of years and then General Dynamics or Northrup-Grumman buys the new company out, giving the inventor a big payday and officially transforming him into a Fat Cat.

I thought that pregnant women were supposed to be put in special blocs. It's in the back of my mind that years ago I heard a story of a woman who was in jail overnight, and only told them that she was pregnant on the way out. The jailers were really mad at her because that's something they're supposed to know.

Letter to the Editor: No fairy tale

By Merle E. Eichenfeld, Sand Springs
Published: 4/28/2012  2:23 AM
Last Modified: 4/28/2012  3:51 AM

The April 8 article, "A universe seemingly without purpose," by cosmologist Lawrence M. Krauss, was an interesting read and included names of Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein and many cosmic terms, such as single galaxy, Milky Way, Big Bang theory, empty space, cosmos, the Large Hadron Collider, cosmic accident, the Higgs Fields, general relativity, quantum mechanics, gravity, multiverse, particle physics, dynamics of empty space, etc.

The article concluded by asking, does all this prove that our universe and the laws that govern it rose spontaneously without divine guidance or purpose? The article's answer was no, but possible. Of course the clear answer is: Genesis 1:1. In the beginning God created the heavens (plural) and the Earth (singular). Doesn't sound like a fairy tale to me.

Lends new meaning to "EcoNazi":

German far-right extremists tap into green movement for support

German consumers are being warned that when they buy organic produce they may be supporting the far-right movement, following the revelation that rightwing extremists in Germany have embraced the ecological movement and are using it to tap into a new generation of supporters.

Debunking the popular view that equates eco-friendliness with cuddly, left-leaning greens, rightwing extremists have even begun to publish their own conservation magazine, which is believed to have the backing of the far-right National Democratic party (NPD). Alongside gardening tips and reports on the dangers of genetically modified milk are articles riddled with rightwing ideology and racial slurs. Bavaria's domestic intelligence agency has described the magazine, Umwelt und Aktiv (Environment and Active), as a "camouflage publication" for the NPD.

True, but the modern Green movement is pretty strong on social justice, including minority rights. (Full disclosure, I knew a few Greens and occasionally voted Green when I was younger). I don't really the far-right gaining much traction with these folks.

The 5 Most Insane Examples of Chinese Counterfeiting

#1. Cigarettes

Currently, there are about 400 billion fake cigarettes being produced in China, enough to supply each U.S. smoker with 460 packs of fake Marlboros, Newports or Benson & Hedges. Surprisingly, about half of those all come from one place -- Yunxiao, a county in the south of China roughly twice the size of New York City and home to 200-plus counterfeit cigarette operations hidden underground. And we meant that last part literally. Yunxiao's illegal cigarette factories are actually hidden below the surface of the city, in neighboring mountain caves and under streets, temples and once even a lake.

In one case, some Yunxiao counterfeiters even tried to divert attention from the underground factory by disguising their compound as a military base, complete with 20 guys parading around in military uniforms and doing daily drills.

The scope of these operations ranges from rusty rolling machines hidden in old bunkers to multimillion-dollar enterprises. The return is amazing (up to 20 times their original investment), and the worst Chinese law can do is gently slap them on the wrist with a couple of years in jail or a small fine. What's not to love?

Well, how about the fact that the fake Chinese cigarettes often contain 80 percent more nicotine and 130 percent more carbon monoxide than the genuine article, plus occasional insect eggs and human feces?

Oh, and then there's what we said earlier -- there's actually a chance you yourself have taken a nice, long drag of counterfeit Chinese poop-sticks. Cigarette factories from Yunxiao export their products to over 60 countries around the globe because it's impossible to spot the fakes unless you're an industry specialist. So 99 percent of all fake cigarettes in the U.S. come from China. In the U.K., one in every three packs is believed to be a Chinese counterfeit.

On the plus side, if we put "May contain human feces" on every pack, we can probably lower smoking rates by, like, 2 to 3 percent.

Gah, just when I thought I'd seen the local Roman Catholic bishop go as far backwards as he could, he goes and summons the shade of Innocent III and has threatened to Interdict a parish in Wisconsin.

Madison Catholic Bishop Robert Morlino has moved to quell a backlash against a group of conservative priests in Platteville by warning parishioners they risk formal church censure unless they stop spreading "rumors and gossip."
The action by Morlino, which two Catholic scholars called highly unusual, appears to include the possibility of offenders being prohibited from taking part in church sacraments such as communion, confession and burial.

In Germany this also had to do with the German Army's long-standing preference for conscripting (recruiting under the Weimar Republic, when conscription was forbidden due to the Treaty of Versailles) from more rural areas. This was done because the Junkers who dominated the army were afraid of it turning on them if it had large numbers of Socialists from the cities ('Socialist is capitalized here as Germany had political parties that openly called themselves 'Socialist' (and I do not mean the Nazis, either, this isn't a Jonah Goldberg argument)).
