A terrible sight to see. Recovery will take a good while from this.

But New Jersey will recover.

So many people will have lost so much. Goddamn. I'm not a materialistic guy, but the hardship that represents, and the lost family memories, the lost scrapbooks and memorabilia and letters and all that. Both of those get me. There are people who aren't going to recover from this, this'll financially break them. I wish we had a better social safety net, where people didn't have to fear random chance so much.

The good news is that far fewer people died and the help the survivors receiver will be far better organized. Both state and federal officials learned a great deal from Katrina. The lesson cost far too much to learn, but it has been learned and we're doing better.

I'm probably going to post photos later, showing the scene from Northern NJ (Ridgewood, Fair Lawn, Glen Rock, Paramus). Lots of downed trees, storm damage, and storm response. It's going to be a monster effort to deal with a monster storm.

Hoboken mayor had called for an evacuation of everyone living on basements/first floor locations throughout the city ahead of the storm surge. That was the absolute right call considering the flooding that Hoboken saw.

From the sound of it, the damage washed all the way up to Washington, which is one of the major N/S routes (cake Boss' Carlo's Bakery is located there). The south end of Hoboken abuts Hoboken Terminal and the Erie Lackawanna ferry terminal/PATH/HBLR station.

All are flooded out. No ETA on restored service to HBLR and NJ Transit and they figure 7-10 days for PATH.

But back in Hoboken, the damage is widespread and the Fire Department lost equipment when the flood waters came into the station nearest to Hoboken Terminal - including the city's command vehicle, hazmat response vehicle, a Marine Division Durango and a van used to transport “firefighters are all under five feet of water.”. Equipment used to fill breathing apparatus was under water meaning that they had to get air from Jersey City.

The Hoboken municipal garage was also flooded out. No ETA on when that will be dried out. Ongoing concern about live wires and downed lines too.

We saw plenty of those around our neck of Northern NJ.

With no disrespect for anyone here-I can't look at this and think election anything. This could be any of us in the shape of our geography. My neck of the woods gets earthquakes. Some fear rivers flooding or fires. But this, well this is all of us.

Right where I grew up and live today-The Northridge earthquake killed some and destroyed many dwellings, FEMA and California and LA County and LA City all stepped up. So did the locals. The Red Cross. Anyway this is the same thing. Now we respond to the disaster as we best can.

The benefits and help were far too much to list here. Some said too much. But ask anyone who was here. Everyone stepped up.

Breezy Point used to be a summer bungalow colony, but it has become a year-round residential neighborhood. Lots of working class families including firefighters and police. It's painful to watch all that damage.

It's more than that. Katrina's aftermath was extensively studied, by all levels of emergency management agency. They all derived lessons about who needs to do what and what equipment is needed and are now putting those lessons to use. Better leadership matters, but as has often been shown, better preparation is also making its mark.

I think this was a lesson learned before; each disaster teaches us new things for successors to take to heart.

On the other hand, I think the Bush Administration seemed to not want to learn from history, and I'm afraid modern Republicans are much like that in their approach to governance.

We have a lot to be thankful for as far as the meteorologists are concerned. Had the forecast been off a lot more people could be suffering or dead. Mass transit could be in much worse than it already is had it not been shut down so early. This was on the nose, and they deserve a lot of credit for it.

Probably downed power lines, ruptured gas lines and/or transformer explosion started the fires; flooding made it impossible to stop once it started spreading to adjacent homes.

He did wrong, and that's a fact. He had to resign, but unlike some others he at least made a proper apology, and admitted his wrongdoing. Note to politicians: This is how you apologize for screwing up, complete, contrite, and without equivocation.

That wasn't a proper apology.

They also generally deal in one of two things: Original works or age-old stories which have numerous iterations. They're extremely anal retentive about copyrights, to the point that they're "rereleasing" old movies in new formats (Blu-Ray, 3D) in order to roll over the copyrights for another 10+ years.

I don't think they're gonna be able to work well with a well-establish franchise that relies a great deal on fan input and moves in directions that movie execs can't control. Either the fandom's gonna get get the Trek treatment ("Sorry, but nothing you create anymore is canon"), or reams of C&Ds.

Disney's saying they plan to pump out a new movie every 2 to 3 years, beyond just the 3 Lucas promised. And they're looking at a Star Wars TV series, amongst other things.

Really, it comes down to why the fans hate the prequels so much. Yeah, you can blame bad writing and acting for a large part, but really it boils down to the reality that the fans had an idea of what the lead-up to the original 3 films would be and Lucas took one large dump on all of it. And I just don't think Disney is gonna learn that lesson.

That was 4 days in Tampa, now we're just popping into the panhandle to work the small towns. A lot depends on the prep work by the local OfA organizers. Had a 'Bama vs Bulldogs thing going with GA for a while.

Good luck! Our game this weekend is a miss (unless we REALLY fuck up) not sure of your SEC fight possibilities.

Really, DD, we really appreciate your work for us.

There are plenty of food banks accepting food. The only people claiming that Mitt is sending food to organizations that don't want it are the moonbats. Mitt's food collections are for show, no doubt about it. However, he's not being a dick and it's unhelpful to discourage food donations to organizations and people who want food donations.

Actually, given the absolutely clumsy way he went about it (there are many, many rich conservatives who would have know how to do this effectively and efficiently), I think Romney IS being a dick. It just screams of someone unfamiliar with the way non-profits operate and how to make their contributions count.

While most are wound up with the Presidential election, I think the control of Congress and the Senate races are where the hot action is happening:

Nevada Senate race heats up, with Latino voters' help

To me, if Obama wants a "legacy" he ought to try and make sure his coattails are as long as possible, and the Democratic Party pick up at least 5 net seats in the Senate, in order to make sure future key appointments (such as for the USSC) are not of the reactionary right kind. And, even if the Democratic party does not take a majority in Congress, at least cut the GOP lead so that Boehner (or whoever ends up Speaker) doesn't have to pander to the Tea Partiers.

(Enough to make one) turn in one's grave

One of the first recorded uses of the phrase is in historian James Bryce's 1888 work The American Commonwealth in which he said: "Jefferson might turn in his grave if he knew".[5] Another early use is in Thackeray's 1849 work The History of Pendennis, where Mrs. Wapshot, upset by a man's advances on the widow of Mr. Pendennis whom the widow had "never liked", says it's "enough to make poor Mr. Pendennis turn in his grave".[6

In the early months of the war, you see so much optimism and unwavering patriotism but by the time the war has started to show some hints of what it became you see growing cynicism and doubt. Many of the men whose letters I read never lived to see the war's end.

Interestingly, the guy who wrote the book on civil disobedience is now a source of otrageous outrage, accusations of wingnuttery and fascism.

No, taking him out of context and putting him in your smug, trolling self is the source of the problem. As you knew it would be. That's why you did it.

Thoreau was also wrong. He was a great guy, but he was wrong. It's not possible to live life in the fashion he did. It is good to recognize the virtues of that life, but he was wrong. An individual may not go out 'rounding up Jews' (though certainly individuals would go out and murder Jews, but an individual doesn't discover the cure for this or that or design and build a well that allows more babies to survive with clean drinking water.

Thoreau's approach to virtue is one from a very comfortable position. Treating him with respect doesn't mean treating him as though he's the Pope of Thinking and if you disagree with him you're dumb.

In fact, this, as usual, demonstrates your hypocrisy. You're outraged that Thoreau is considered impractical. Hoo boy.

I had the impression when I read some of Thoreau back in 11th grade that he was a little too idealistic. Wouldn't mind reading him again. I'm willing to give writers second chances. My experience with Kafka was a College junior as much more pleasant than mine as a high school senior.
