Women Fight Back: Ohio Bill Makes Erectile Dysfunction Her Business

Politics • Views: 39,958

You want to regulate our ovaries, uteri and order us to carry state-mandated children? Well, fine. We want to regulate your erectile dysfunction.

That’s the message of state Democratic Senator Nina Turner’s erectile dysfunction bill in Ohio (SB307). The bill is meant to inflict the same sort of humiliation and violation of privacy on men as mostly male legislators are inflicting upon women across the country, but is wisely being sold under the exact same disingenuous “concern” as Republicans sell their attempts to control women’s wombs.

Turner sweetly pointed out, “I certainly want to stand up for men’s health and take this seriously and legislate it the same way mostly men say they want to legislate a woman’s womb.”

SB 307 requires that:

(A) No person other than a physician shall issue to a patient a prescription for a drug intended to treat symptoms of erectile dysfunction.

(B) Prior to issuing a prescription for a drug intended to treat symptoms of erectile dysfunction, a physician shall do all of the following:

(1) Obtain from the patient a notarized affidavit in which at least one of the patient’s sexual partners certifies that the patient has experienced symptoms of erectile dysfunction in the ninety days preceding the date on the affidavit;

(2) Refer the patient to a sexual therapist approved by the state medical board for an assessment of the possible causes of the patient’s symptoms of erectile dysfunction and obtain a written report in which the therapist concludes that the patient’s symptoms are not solely attributable to one or more psychological conditions;

We’ve seen other bills like this before, and I imagine it’ll follow the same course: Male legislators will get irate, will quickly kill the bill, and then move on without the least bit of irony.

11 piratedan  Sat, Jun 29, 2013 10:43:24am

it’s high time that we have this much needed legislation. Think of all of those women, hoping, waiting to be impregnated and this bill finally puts the onus on the partner to be able to come to grips with their performance issues. Think of the abuses that are taking place without this monitoring but I am curious, if someone does have to report to an ER because of an unexpected side effect, do we need to swab them down and have a male rape kit administered?//

12 Gus  Sat, Jun 29, 2013 10:45:16am

Viagra is an abomination towards God! The Bible prohibits it! If God has the grace to give you erectile dysfunction then see it as a blessing and a message from Him for He is you Lord and Savior! Just say no to erectile dysfunction drugs!

Amen.

This bill doesn’t go far enough. All E.D. diagnoses should require a urologist to perform a cystoscopy on the prospective patient. Certainly this is only fair, since women are being required to have a vaginal ultrasound.

Fair and Balanced, that’s me.

Maybe a 13 hour filibuster will cause that little lightbulb in their heads to flicker.

Thing about it is that these bills never come up in state legislatures where there’s actually the chance that Republicans will have to filibuster. Like Texas, Ohio is a legislature where the best the Democrats there can home for is it gets to the floor for a vote. I understand the argument that it’s about the irony and about making a point, but the point is sort of lost when Republicans hold enough seats that the bill might not get out of committee.

And the pills should be prescribed one at a time.

There needs to be a 48 hours “cooling off” period before the pill is provided, along with mandatory counseling. The pharmacist must also provide written proof to the patient that they will not personally profit from the prescription, and provide a breakdown of their previous years income for inspection.

All such prescriptions must be announced over the pharmacy P.A. system, with the name of the prescription and patient both announced.

Don’t laugh, at least one Republican legislature has tried, but the bill didn’t go too far. There really are nutters in this country who think that things were much better before women could get divorces from abusive husbands without worrying that the neighbors were going to accuse her of being a whore and worry aloud how she was going to survive without a man to support her.

We will leave promptly at 6:15 am for Austin, as we plan to participate at the top of this program, starting with the event at the Cathedral. WEAR BLUE!”

First, I don’t think CB is open at that hour. Second, who wants to leave their car unattended in a public parking lot that long? They’re going to church first. And they’re wearing blue? The Blueshirts?

A challenger arises!

Dewhurst, who plans to run for re-election against a growing field of Republican candidates, has received criticism from conservatives in the aftermath of Tuesday’s headline-grabbing filibuster. As the presiding officer of the Senate, many have blamed Dewhurst for allowing state Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, to engage in a lengthy filibuster against Senate Bill 5, which would have banned abortion at 20 weeks gestation and increased restrictions on facilities where abortions are performed and doctors who perform them. The measure will come up again in a second special session.

“It was pretty clear to the world who was watching that it happened because of a lack of leadership,” state Sen. Dan Patrick, R-Houston said on Thursday when he announced his plans to challenge Dewhurst as a candidate for lieutenant governor. “We allowed someone to stand on the floor for 12 hours and give one side of the story.”

Of course, now they’re predicting 108 on Monday and 111 on Tuesday…which is when I need to be moving furniture around for the electrician to work.

I’m sort of praying this forecast is wrong, but it tends to be the most accurate of the bunch.

Theosophists have guessed at the awesome grandeur of the cosmic cycle wherein our world and human race form transient incidents. They have hinted at strange survivals in terms which would freeze the blood if not masked by a bland optimism. But it is not from them that there came the single glimpse of forbidden eons which chills me when I think of it and maddens me when I dream of it. -H.P Lovecraft, The Call of Cthulhu.

re: #131 stabby

Little did you know, but the weather-gods and sexual perversion are well know to have mixed:

Biblical narrative incorporates tales of Baal worship into the traditions of the wilderness wandering, thus tracing Baal worship to the earliest period of Israel’s existence. At Shittim they attached themselves to Baal-Peor, ate sacrifices for the dead, and indulged in sacred sexual orgies (Num. 25:1–11; Ps. 106:28). Life in a land dependent on rainfall enhanced the appeal of the Baal cult and its pervasive influence persisted through the centuries, as the unrelenting protests of the prophets and the sporadic efforts at reform attest. Horrendous and repulsive aspects of the worship – sexual excesses and perversions (Isa. 57:3–10), perhaps including copulation with animals (Hos. 13:2) such as Baal himself performed in the Ugaritic myth – are depicted in the prophetic tirades. Virtually all reference to Baal’s consort, the violent “Virgin Anath” – with whom Baal copulates by the thousand in one of the Ugaritic mythological fragments – has been excluded from the Bible, but the goddesses Ashtart (Judg. 2:13) and *Asherah (Judg. 6:30; II Kings 16:32–33) are associated with him.

So when Santorum is ranting about marrying his dog he is really talking about the hot weather.

Additional regulations require that the doctors office meet ambulatory surgical center standards and that all doctors must have privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the facility.

Doctors who carry out procedures to verify that said patient is ED must have a 48-hour cooling off period before they can prescribe the medication so that the patient knows all the potential side effects, including stroke, heart attack, and death. Other side effects may include heart palpitations, sweating, and should not be taken when operating heavy machinery or motor vehicles.

Doctors who fail to adhere to the 48-hour waiting period are subject to $1,000 fines for first offense, $5,000 fine for the second offense, and $10,000 fine and six month suspended license to practice medicine after the third offense. Any additional offenses will be cause for a revocation of license to practice medicine and $25,000 fine per occurrence.

Heh, it’s odd. People do what they want, they pick beliefs that give them excuses to do what they want.

It’s kind of surprising that Judaism and Christianity are so popular since they DON’T give people excuses for sexual outlets -it seems to favor making marriages more permanent at the expense of supressing most forms of sexual behavior. It’s as if what it offers is the authority to punish others for being sexual in lieu of allowing its followers to be sexual.

Certainly centuries back it was true that women were badly treated, divorced women stigmatized etc. And though all sexual behavior outside marriage was disapproved of, men were significantly less punished than women.

But I’m not sure this describes the world of American conservative Christians in 2013.

My dad could be pretty cool, but even there, there was some residual anti-Semitism and benign prejudice in his attitudes from time to time. He was born in the mid-1920s, and it was a pretty different world back then.

There’s the story of Onan in Genesis (38: 3-10), who did coitus interruptus and, well, wound up being zotted by God. The Catholic Church uses this as the basis for its doctrine against masturbation, though a straight-up reading of the text would indicate is more the coitus interruptus that PO’ed the Big Kahuna, along with not following instructions that were given to him by Judah.

164 Absalom, Absalom, Obdicut  Sat, Jun 29, 2013 2:28:00pm

In general, religions tend to be repressive of religion because they tend to reflect older cultural values. They are not the only repository of such values, and they are not comprised solely of such values. Religion can be a mechanism of social change— though it took quite awhile, the protestant reformation helped the idea of female equality hugely, for example.

Other cultural aspects, like, say, sports culture, can carry the same archaic information; any institutional thing, basically, will pass down the older, more patriarchal values. Treating religion as though it is an especial poison, rather than one source of ‘revealed truth’ among many in our culture, is giving religion too much importance.

Apparently some believe that wasting sperm is the greatest sin, even if that happens not through masturbation but through having sex with a wife who is no longer fertile or even if she is pregnant.

Onan’s sin wasn’t wasting sperm, it was disobeying a direct order from his father Judah for Onan to fulfill his brother obligation to his Er. It was ancient Judaism’s way of saying that marriage is between a man, a woman and any widowed sisters in law he might have. The offense wasn’t sexual immorality per se, but a deliberate and selfishly motivated refusal to do one’s duty.

He approaches his writing like a litigator? Perhaps during closing arguments, but certainly not in building a legal case that there’s actual wrongdoing. He’s made lots of allegations, but certainly not proved anything illegal has actually happened.

Moreover, his writing is sloppy and doesn’t completely grasp the facts alleged - confusing the technical details of what he’s writing about indicates he’s putting activism ahead of the facts of the story.

So, here’s my take on why GG is wrong (in 140 or less characters):

GG doesn’t understand the story he’s writing, confuses basic issues, and puts activism ahead of good journalism and practices.

A Big Idea: Abraham Lincoln, MBA

Who knew Harvard Business School hires historians? Nancy Koehn, who mainly studies the history of leadership, has identified lessons from Lincoln that the business world can learn and use. During a talk she gave on Friday at the Aspen Ideas Festival, she spoke about Lincoln’s pragmatic ability to know which battles to fight; his ability to step outside of himself and evaluate alternative perspectives; how to work with others to accomplish desirable outcomes; and how to mobilize in the face of the most important challenges. Perhaps one of the country’s most beloved presidents might have succeeded in the business world.

Because nothing is more important than to “succeed” “in the business world” ???

I had a friend many years ago who was a little too fond of drinking. One day I told her I had a plan for a short film; it opens with her sitting at the bar, having a cocktail, and suddenly she doubles over in pain. She gasps - falls to the ground, clutching her midsection. Then, a gutburster scene, inspired by Alien….finally, her liver bursts through - an ambulatory liver - walks up her midsection, and flips her off to her face before it hops off her body, walks out and slams the door as it leaves.

Fade to black.

We don’t exactly know what the Valeyard is, or how he came about. It’s a bit confusing. But if John Hurt is playing the character everyone thinks he is, then the Valeyard could appear very soon.

Christmas Special soon.

Christmas Special soon.

Well, the Valeyard is supposed to be the pentultimate incarnation, while whoever Hurt is would seem to fall between McGann and Eccleston given that he was involved in the Time War.

But yeah, it’s confused enough that they can do whatever they want and come up with something to explain it. Total retcon malleability is one of the special charms of Dr. Who.

I’m just hoping Hurt’s appearance means more Timothy Dalton…

All of the “angrybeatles” posts remind me of a funny exchange from Wayne’s World:

Wayne: Who’s playing tonight?
Bouncer: Crucial Taunt is just finishing up, then we got the Jolly Green Giants and the Shitty Beatles.
Wayne: The Shitty Beatles? Are they any good?
Bouncer: They suck.
Wayne: Then it’s not just a clever name.
