Republicans Fantasize of Impeachment, Sans Reason

The crazy party
Wingnuts • Views: 19,880

They don’t know how, they don’t know when, they don’t even really know why, but Republicans can hardly wait to impeach that guy in the White House.

WASHINGTON — Representative Kerry Bentivolio, a freshman Republican from Michigan, has a legislative dream. It is not to balance the federal budget, or find a way to help his ailing state or even take away money from the federal health care program, a goal that has so animated many other Republicans this summer.

Rather, Mr. Bentivolio told constituents, it is to put in motion the impeachment of President Obama. “If I could write that bill and submit it, it would be a dream come true,” he said this month.

Mr. Bentivolio may be lacking in his understanding of the technical details of the impeachment process — he has retained experts and historians to help him with that, he said — but he is hardly the only one with this desire.

While many members of Congress have used their August break to engage in conversations about immigration policy, the federal budget and the impending implementation of the Affordable Care Act, some Republicans have taken the opportunity to raise the specter of — if not quite the grounds for — presidential impeachment.

At least two other House Republicans told voters this month that the impeachment process could happen. And last week, Senator Tom Coburn, an Oklahoma Republican who has called himself a friend of the president, told constituents that the nation was “perilously close” to an impeachment situation.

Sigh. Missed this place. My internet went down and only just got it back. It’s been nine days.

On topic: The wingnuts have plenty of reasons for impeachment. To whit: Obama is liberal…

…and black.

Oh, it gets better than that: according to Ed Rogers in the Washington Post today (not the Washington Times or the NY Post mind you) the impeachment talk is Obama’s fault: he just won’t let it go away.

It’s his willful flaunting [sic] of the law! He’s just asking for it!

Hell, they’ve been talking impeachment since ‘11, when the TPers got into office and immediately began making noise about how this or that would be “the straw that broke the camel’s back.” And every time they think they’ve finally found that scandal that will yield articles of impeachment…it slips like sand between their fingers as they realize that the public isn’t as “outraged” as they are.

Hell, remember when F&F was going to be “The Big One”?

12 aagcobb  Sat, Aug 24, 2013 3:04:30pm

The eighty teabaggers in the House who want to shut down the government over Obamacare would probably vote to impeach right now and worry about grounds later. The problem for them is that to get a majority, they would actually have to have evidence of a crime. I know, I know, why get hung up on technicalities?

13 b_sharp  Sat, Aug 24, 2013 3:09:02pm

I hate appealing to stereotypes, but from my own observations I have to conclude that Tea Party types have a difficult time getting beyond motivated reasoning.

Meanwhile, the GOP Old Guard sits in the back and mutters darkly about how they never should have agreed to let the Office of Independent Counsel expire back in ‘99, because they could have another Starr-wannabe running around, digging through the dumpsters for “charges” to throw at Obama.

Atwater was colorful and a lot of fun, even if he did have a dark side. But he won a lot of campaigns. Maybe we don’t like to admit it and maybe no one will embroider his rules for display on their office walls, but Atwater would recognize all too well a lot of what is standard operating procedure in American politics today.

There’s next to zero doubt that an attack happened. the question is who perpetrated it. Did the order come directly from Assad? Someone loyal to him but lower in the command chain? An Al Qaeda element looking to further inflame tensions? Or perhaps the ‘rebels” themselves looking to force the West to take action against Assad

I’m more hawkish than most but I have a hard time getting too excited about intervention in Syria. Last I checked the “good guys” among the rebel groups were way to few and way to weak. In the aftermath of Assad’s fall they are just going to get steamrolled by Al Qaeda and assorted Salfists and Islamists. Airstrikes against Assad may be inevitable but I think he needs to remain long enough for us to stack the deck in preparation for his fall. This isn’t going to be as easy as Lybia or Kosovo. Post Assad Syria is likely to be very messy.

You may not have to go as far as you think. It’s visible from the wild north country on days of extreme solar activity. I need to pay more attention to the space weather and see if I can catch it sometime.

I’ve seen it from northern New York state on more than one occasion.

That would likely be the extent of it, unless we start getting some pictures and scenes out of Syria like what we saw with Bosnia on TV.

But news seems to be stuck on stupid nowadays.

So.

Everybody going to watch Ghostshark tonight?

Burning question: Why is there no Zombieshark?

I’ll admit I have a sort of mild phobia of sharks. I don’t worry about being attacked in the bathtub or anything like that, but the sight of (for example) a Great White breaching is irrationally uncomfortable to see. Crazily enough, I think it comes in part from going to see the USS Arizona when I was about 4. I was extremely creeped out and distressed by seeing the ship under water. It was very scary to me at the time. I remember being frustrated that everyone kept trying to tell me it was okay, when I knew it was not fucking okay for a ship to be under water. Instead of trying to help me work through what I was feeling, they tried to get me to deny that I was feeling it. ANYWAY, I believe that somehow translated into a lifelong mild irrational fear of sharks and the ocean in general. I also don’t like to watch footage of ships sinking or listing severely.

But even though all that stuff bothers me for not-very-good reasons, all this recent shark-oriented goofiness mainly serves to keep me baffled and feeling ever more unable to relate to the dumb culture I live in.

Bah humbug and get off my lawn, I guess.

My fear of spiders started when a couple of bullies living next door teased me incessantly about having spiders in my hair and that they were going to lay eggs under my skin and eat my brain. I was 3, 4, maybe 5 when it happened.

138 A Mom Anon  Sat, Aug 24, 2013 6:09:57pm

re: #131 ProTARDISLiberal

You’re only seeing the bad because you live with it. I get that way sometimes, mostly when I spend too much time online reading the nonsense the wingnuts spew all the time. And I live in a very red state area, I can almost not avoid the mean sometimes. BUT! I have found that stepping away from the internet and going to places in nature helps, a LOT. Hiking with my dog is better than anti-depressants(for me at least),I’m to the point now that if I don’t get out I feel like there’s a hole in my life. Bonus: I’m actually getting into shape, slowly, but I’m building strength and endurance.

I believe, even on bad days(though sometimes it’s hard), that most people are good. The bad ones are just louder and a lot more flashy. Good people are too busy living to draw lots of attention to themselves. Get away from your abusive dad as often as you can, the rest of the time you HAVE to let what he says roll off your back- he feeds on your distress. It’s what abusive people do. Starve the beast and keep your distance and keep your reactions away from him. You live in one of the prettiest states in the country, go to a park, pack a lunch and hike a trail, take some pics, get out of your own head. You won’t regret it. Join a hiking club, you might meet some really cool people.

true, nothing pisses off someone that wishes to make your life miserable (for whatever twisted reason) more than a life well lived and happily adjusted. Mom’s right, take a walk, hell, do charity work, make your life what you want it to be, control what you can control (i.e. you) and the stuff you can’t, deal with it as best you can.
