Not this time. It’s a non-Greenwald guardian. Click-bait!

Great little film, though, with a nasty little twist at the end.

Good twist. I like it. The neck-cracking when she stepped off her ship was a foreshadow.

Something I’ve always found something both fascinating and creepy about sunken ships.

re: #4 Charles Johnson

See, a sunken ship drives home memento mori in a way few other things can.

The relentless, indifferent ocean overtakes it. All the life that made it a ship when it was gliding across the surface is gone without a trace. It is no longer a ship, and never again will be. It no longer belongs to the human world. It is in fact now a very dangerous and frankly hostile place for humans to go. It is as distant from living humanity as it can possibly be, until it rusts away entirely and becomes part of the silt at the ocean floor. And sooner or later, it will pass out of memory entirely.

Fun Fact: 20th Century Fox wanted “Damnation Alley” to be its big summer block buster, but due to production issues, they decided to release another movie for the summer, which the studio execs expected to tank at the box office.

That movie was Star Wars.

For those on the Eastern Seaboard, in the next few minutes you will have an excellent chance to see the International Space Station go overhead. It will pass west to east, and will be almost at 90deg elevation for those at the latitude of, say, Boston. It is BRIGHT and will be hard to miss if you have cloud-free skies.

South Carolina restaurant ejected African-American customers when white person felt ‘threatened’

Michael Brown and a group composed of family and friends were gathered in July at the North Charleston Wild Wing Café to say farewell to a cousin who was moving away. The party waited for two hours for a table only to be told by a manager that there was “a situation.”

“She said there’s a situation where one of our customers feels threatened by your party, so she asked us not to seat you in our section, which totally alarmed all of us because we’re sitting there peaceably for two hours,” Brown told Channel 5. “Obviously, if we were causing any conflict, we would have been ejected out of the place hours before.”

A member of the party began to film the discussion between Brown and the restaurant manager with a camera phone.

“I asked her I want to be clear with you,” Brown recounted. “I said so you’re telling me I have to leave. She said I have a right to deny you service. I said so you’re asking me to leave because you’re upset because he was recording you, after we’ve waited for two hours, and after you’ve already pretty much discriminated on us, and she answered yes.”

My husband was reading to me today about the hypothetical Bering Strait rail tunnel/bridge. He said the Russian government had shown some interest in the idea. I said they could make Snowden build it.

That’s probably as political as we’ve gotten the past few weeks.

On the plus side, we decided not to do 395 to 120 as our route back, since the Rim Fire would have made that very, very difficult.

Oh, there will be pictures. The camera is offloading as we speak, so I can start poking at and processing.

I GOT A BOBCAT PHOTO. It is such an amazing bobcat photo. I have the e-mail of a supervisor for Black Canyon to send it to because they want to put it on the park Facebook page and use it in programs.

And we did the state park in NV that was recommended (spelling escapes me at the moment) and also the car got hit by a deer. While I was driving. At night. On my birthday. With another 70 miles to go before we could stop.

Fortunately, no damage was done to the car, our trailer, and probably the deer. Just my nerves.

Man…what a fucking scammer.

At the seminars, consumers were told about “Trump Elite” mentorships that cost $10,000 to $35,000. Students were promised individual instruction until they made their first deal. Schneiderman said participants were urged to extend the limit on their credit cards for real estate deals, but then used the credit to pay for the Trump Elite programs. The attorney general said the program also failed to promptly cancel memberships as promised.

re: #111 Political Atheist

How did you get that?

It’s a subset of 5 photos stitched together from the Crystal Forest area in Petrified Forest National Park, which we were frantically trying to hike through before the skies opened up.

Seriously some of the most gorgeous thunderstorm structure (believe that to be the gust front, given the winds as during the photos) I have been privileged to witness. The clouds showed up, I was just lucky to be in the right place at the right time with a decent camera. Shooting at 18mm, f/16, 1/250 giving an ISO of 560. Would have killed for a wider angle lens there but that’s the best I’ve got at the moment.

Of course, I was less flattering about the clouds when they opened up and I had to drive the trailer through them. But I have a whole set from that hike, including that panorama. I’m thinking to get that printed on aluminum. :)

Wow. When I first saw your comment, I thought this was a story from 50 years ago. This was my first thought, because three comments earlier was a mention of the four young people killed in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963.

It was a strange feeling to click through to the article, and discover that this happened in 2013, not 1963.

This is why I have a special concern about today’s right-wing. I have many disagreements with the “left-wing”, or libertarian wing, e.g. recent moonbat reactions to Snowden / Greenwald. But the article you provided reinforced my feeling: there’s something about the right wing that’s just plain mean. Asking 25 people, many of whom happened to have been longstanding customers, to leave a restaurant, because of their skin color? In 2013?

In the land of liberty and the home of the brave, such as Edward Snowden - Russia:

Humor failure in Russia: Crackdown on ‘Pastafarians’ shows Kremlin-church ties

The march of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster had all signs of being a satirical stunt – some of its 100 participants were armed with colanders on their heads and pasta in their mouths.

But the reaction of Russian authorities to so-called Pastafarians has been anything but lighthearted.

Police and members of a Russian Orthodox group set upon the group last Saturday, knocking some to the ground. Eight members of the church were detained and subsequently charged with organizing an unsanctioned rally. Although those detained have since been released, they are due back in court before the end of August.

[…]

Alexei Romanov, a member of the Pastafarian Church, called the move and subsequent legal proceedings against it “absurd.”

The country is gradually turning into an authoritarian state,” he said.

[…]

This time members of an unregistered Orthodox Christian group who call themselves “God’s Will,” called the police when they found out about the procession, according to Romanov.

They accused the spaghetti worshipers of insulting the religious feelings of believers – an accusation that, if found to be true by a court of law, can have mean up to three years in jail.

[…]

“God’s Will”, sounds like a future GOP platform.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE The team will primarily lend support and expertise to federal agency initiatives. One example concerns the effort to reduce domestic violence, a problem for which there is no quick fix. But a good place to start is to ensure that each component of a victim’s support system works as well as it can. One such component is the National Domestic Violence Hotline, which victims can call for advice and support. Like other call-in centers, it can become busy and put callers on hold. Many victims hang up before they’ve had a chance to speak with a counselor.

In this case, the Administration for Children and Families is building an alliance of call centers to collaborate on experimental trials to see how best to keep callers on the line long enough to get assistance. Avoiding long periods of silence with callers, and offering an estimate of the waiting time, can help achieve that goal. So can composing the initial message in a way that maximizes the chances that a caller won’t hang up.

Bobby Give-Creationism-A-Chance Jindal writes pretentiously in his Op-Ed The end of race

[…]

There is no more shallow, hollow, or soulless way to think about human beings than in terms of their skin color. It is completely inane. Under what logic would any intelligent, logical, or decent person give any thought to the pigmentation of a person’s epidermis? It’s nothing short of immoral, not to mention stupid (oops…there’s that word again).

On the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech in August 1963, many are asking the question: Are we in a better place today when it comes to race relations?

Yes and no. On the yes side, consider the following:
My parents immigrated to the United States from India a few years after Dr. King was assassinated. They came looking for an equal opportunity, and they got it, in the Deep South, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. My parents wanted only to be judged based on the content of their character, not the color of their skin.

[…]

Jindal ignores the (Asian) elephant in the room - that racism in the South has been primarily anti-African, not anti-Asian. Certainly Indians are very much stereotyped in society, but not particularly scornfully.

He then follows that up with this paragraph:

In 2003, I decided to run for governor of Louisiana, a state where David Duke got 44 percent of the statewide vote in 1990. The pundits said I was insane to even try. Friends worried about my mental stability and begged me not to run. I narrowly lost that first race, but I’ve won every race since then. I wish I had a nickel for every time East Coast political journalists have asked me about discrimination, and I wish I had a dime for every Louisiana voter who has broken those journalists’ ugly stereotypes.

[…]

Gee… why did those “stereotypes” exist. According to Jindal they come from journalists. But, if Duke got 44% of the vote, how can the stereotype be actually far from the truth?

His main mission though is to appeal to the Je$u$ market:

When I look at America, I see a country that increasingly has lost its way in terms of morality. As a Christian, as I look at American culture over the past half century, I don’t like a lot of what I see. Divorce is through the roof, pornography is everywhere, sexual predators are on the loose and on the Internet, our abortion rate is higher than almost every First World country, vulgarity and profanity are mainstream and commonplace. In general, our culture has become coarser, and I regret that.

[…]

Well, considering many countries have government afforded abortions and widely available contraceptives, compared to the US, maybe Jindal ought to reconsider why abortion rates in the US are higher than in some other Western nations?

Bobby Jindal - when making sense is not a prerequisite.

In the meantime, I got the chance to walk from SoHo to the High Line yesterday, and captured some of the best aspects of these great areas of NYC.

The High Line is a fabulous space that makes you feel as though you’re not a part of NYC. It was mobbed yesterday with crowds, but it still felt intimate - in part because you’re compressed into a narrow space so you don’t feel the immensity of the crowd, you only experience a fraction of it at any time.

And because you’re above street level, the park has a voyeuristic air to it - you’re looking into apartments, and people look back. There are some people who’ve put up funny stickers or signs for park visitors; it’s a pretty neat experience.

I learned the darkroom process (among other things) from a guy who used to make flawless panoramas — in the 1980s, on film, using purely “analog” processes. I don’t have the slightest idea how he did it, except that it involved a tilt-shift lens on a Bronica medium-format body. He died in a car accident about 12 years ago.

Ecuador Law Makes Sure Local Bands Get Airtime

Quito, Ecuador — When you spin the radio dial in this high-altitude city you could be almost anywhere. The airwaves are crowded with the likes of Beyonce, Shakira and Pitbull, just like you were cruising a highway in Miami or Manhattan — rather than tooling through the snow-capped Andes.

But Ecuador’s airwaves are about to undergo a domestic invasion. Thanks to a recently passed communications law, half of all music played on the radio will have to be homegrown. The move has station managers scrambling for local talent, musicians tuning up their guitars and long-languishing record companies dusting off their equipment.

The government hopes the law can turn this nation of 15 million — perhaps best known for the Galapagos Islands and as the first asylum choice of NSA-leaker Edward Snowden — into a musical powerhouse capable of fending off talent from Colombia, Argentina, Mexico and the United States.

Probably not, since American sites don’t focus on the Rom very much. This idea was probably internal within the neo-Nazis of central and eastern Europe, and its main purpose was to justify what they were already wanting to do. “A tyrant will always find a pretext for his tyranny.”

That’s very true, unfortunately. I just couldn’t help but notice the uncanny similarity to the argument a lot of the American far-right kooks expound, “Black people are the real racists!

I would say the far-right (neo-Nazis, etc.) have been more vocal as of late. A lot of that can likely be chalked up to far-right extremist political parties experiencing electoral successes here and there. The dominant far-right party here, the DSSS (Worker’s Party of Social Justice) managed to increase their share of the vote to 1.2% or thereabouts, still far below the threshold needed to take a seat in the Parliament here. The DS (Worker’s Party) was banned here a couple of years back, hence their new incarnation as DSSS.

They aren’t going to do so loudly, no more than the Dems were willing to do so back in the later Bush years. To smack the crazy wing of the party down in such a fashion would be to flirt with disaster.

re: #161 Shiplord Kirel

Word has reached me that an arrogant fundy grifter, bigot, and hypocrite I know died of a heart attack overnight. He spent most of his life peddling scams of one kind or another, praising the Lord in public, abusing and stealing from working people on the job, and drinking and cheating on his wife in private.

To paraphrase Mark Twain, finding that you have outlived another old enemy is one of the few genuine and free pleasures of life. They seem to be dying like flies these days, and good riddance. I guess character does show and a lifetime of deception, cruelty, and arrogance will take its toll. Since I am in the best health and physical condition of my life relative to my age group, I probably have a lot to look forward to.

Btw, he who dies with the most toys IS STILL DEAD (and probably bankrupt).

As deeply satisfying as it would be to “smack the crazy wing of the party down”, the GOP doesn’t dare do it now - the 2014 mid-terms are coming up, and a public smack down of the “crazy wing” would catastrophically alienate the GOP’s base.

Not yet, but he is hanging by a thread owing to obesity, heart disease, and (in all likelihood) the stress of having to maintain the “whited sepulchre” of his life and marriage.

I’ll be leaving Lubbock in a couple of weeks. I can’t say I will miss it.

I am tempted to equip my robber-baron car with drunk-sighting staffs on the fenders, jackboot scrapers on the door sills, a brush guard (ie cowcatcher) on the grill, and a selection of gay pride, pro-Obama, and anti-fundy stickers so I can cruise around and say goodbye in style. I considered a remote control catapult to hurl cowpies at tailgating pickups, but that would mean cutting the trunk lid. A high pressure furnace and spray nozzle to distribute roiling clouds of marijuana smoke would be ideal but it’s unfortunately illegal. Otoh, judging by what I see on the streets here, trying to run people down and force them off the road is perfectly legal (I’ve never seen anyone arrested for it at any rate).

One of my professors I had at college found this political poll, and took it. So did I. My results.

Radicalism 69.25
Socialism 68.75
Tenderness 56.25

These scores indicate that you are a moderate progressive; this is the political profile one might associate with a university professor. It appears that you are skeptical towards religion, and have a pragmatic attitude towards humanity in general.

Your attitudes towards economics appear socialist, and combined with your social attitudes this creates the picture of someone who would generally be described as left-wing.

To round out the picture you appear to be, political preference aside, an idealist with several strong opinions.
