Sen. Susan Collins Challenger Says His Wife-Beating Conviction Proves ‘Guts and Integrity’

I know who Rush Limbaugh will be rooting for.
Politics • Views: 23,918

Erick Bennett, a conservative challenger to Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) who was convicted of assaulting his wife in 2003, argued that his continued denial of the charge shows his political integrity.

“The fact that I have been jailed repeatedly for not agreeing to admit to something I didn’t do should speak to the fact of how much guts and integrity I have,” Bennett, whose wife divorced him after the attack, said during a news conference Monday, captured by Bangor Daily News. “If I go to D.C., I’m going to have that same integrity in doing what I say, and saying what I do, when it comes to protecting people’s rights, as well as their pocketbooks.”

Bennett’s legal efforts to fight the wife-beating charge ran out when the Maine Supreme Judicial Court upheld his conviction in 2004. But during the news conference to discuss his primary challenge to Collins, Bennett maintained the justice system is designed to “railroad” alleged domestic abusers.

His was not alleged. His was a conviction. He’s proud of that. Speaks volumes. He’ll be a Rush/Hannity hero.

That makes them all the more popular. His stance sums it up. Read his Facebook remarks on the link in my comment. A real Tea Bag winner fighting for truth liberty and his way of corruption. I find it amusing that now the GOP is concerned. Concerned after the Tea bags pissed all over the American people. Sure they are. Their lap dog is coming after THEM. That is their ONLY concern. They deserve to rip each other apart.

Saw this in the story:

“I would be surprised if he gets a sufficient number of Republicans in Maine to sign nomination papers to put him on the ballot,” the GOP chairman added.

It will be worth seeing if he’s right.

Bennett’s comments fuel growing Republican unease with his candidacy. He posted a slew of offensive Facebook comments in December, including one calling Rep. Mike Michaud (D- Maine) a “closet homo.”

Whenever someone brings up something like that it reminds of the Texas “paramour law”, which wasn’t repealed until I was in the 5th grade.

Texas Trivia > Is it true you can shoot your wife’s lover if you catch them “in the act?”

This is commonly referred to as the “paramour law,” which referred to article 1220 of the Texas Penal Code. Article 1220 was repealed in 1973 by Senate Bill 34 during the 63rd Regular Session of the Texas Legislature. Prior to its repeal, article 1220 of the Texas Penal Code read as follows:

Homicide is justifiable upon one taken in the act of adultery with the wife, provided that the killing takes place before the parties to the act have separated. Such circumstance cannot justify a homicide where it appears that there has been, on the part of the husband, any connivance or assent to the adulterous connection.

I would add that there was no such law (that I know of) that considered a wife shooting her husband’s lover in the same situation as “justifiable homicide”.

At 6-feet tall and close to 300 lbs. my son is well aware that he could seriously injure or even possibly kill a woman if he used physical violence against her (after which he would have to deal with me, which is quite a frightening thought to him even though he’s 30 years old now, heh).

He’s had past girlfriends raise their hands to him, but he’s big & strong enough that he was able to simply wrap his arms around them and immobilize them until they calmed down. Heck, he’s aware that his size alone is enough to terrify a woman if he gets really angry.

The only circumstance where I can see force being justified would be a woman coming at a man with a potentially deadly weapon like a baseball bat or something—if she does that then, yeah, go ahead and clock her in self defense.

A conviction followed by that conviction being upheld on appeal. If he was “railroaded” then I guess the appeals court was in on it as well as the lower court?

People who post “selfies” of their body building prowess ought to be automatically barred from running for public office. It speaks volumes about their mental state that they think they should emphasize their body image as being relevant to the average viewer. There should be a mandatory watermark attached to all such pictures that says “Asshole, very possibly an misogynist asshole” so that such images can not be later used to mislead people. :p

Not much available on this yet…

ASPEN, Colo. - The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office confirms emergency crews are responding to an accident at the Aspen Airport.

Comedian Kevin Nealon tweeted: “Horrible plane crash here at Aspen airport. Exploded into flames as it was landing. I think it was a private jet.”

“Fire truck and ambulances were on the scene within minutes,” Nealon tweeted. “I don’t believe there are any survivors.”

“Airport is closed now. I think I’ll drive back to LA after seeing that,” Nealon posted.

Same thing with terrorism. I have no idea what the exact statistics are, but I’d venture a guess that the chances of getting maimed or killed by terrorists in the U.S. is much, much lower than the chance of something like getting struck by lightning. Unsurprisingly, the chances are higher in Israel and, comparatively speaking, astronomical if you’re a Muslim living in the Middle East.

My “Constitutional Conservative” FB friend is arguing that the state has no right to force people to sell to others based on their beliefs. Apparently, it would be exactly like a Gentile suing a kosher deli to force them to serve bacon.

I am being very patient right now.

I have a client that knows this guy. Was talking to him about this a couple of weeks ago. No comment.

Yeah, because a kosher deli would totally have bacon on hand, they’d just be opposed to selling it to gentiles. // *facepalm*

You have way more patience than I.

His argument is that the state forcing the baker to make a cake for the gay couple is exactly like the state forcing a kosher deli to sell bacon to a Gentile. When I pointed out that the kosher deli wouldn’t sell bacon to anybody no matter who they are but the bakery will generally sell cakes to everybody that walks through the door, he countered with the idea that the state has no right to force anyone to sell to someone else if it conflicts with their personal beliefs.

Like I said, I’m being patient. Mostly I’m just deflecting to Colorado state law, pointing out that the suit is based on their civil union laws and how they’re written.

I maintain that Paul Brown Stadium is cursed by the deal brokered on the backs of Hamilton County tax payers. While I admire Marvin (and agree with you) and many of the players, I can’t get past my loathing of Bengals’ ownership. But Mike Brown will continue to prosper in spite of what the team does. And we will continue to pay.

i’m tempted to ask him what he would think if he started seeing signs saying “we will not sell to anybody who thinks it’s ok to discriminate; please be prepared to state your beliefs before service”

They warn you very explicitly about it on the PHP site. But I just think it’s completely insane that dumping out a backtrace with all kinds of security issues is the default behavior. That’s a hell of a penalty for forgetting to catch an exception.

So if a bakery owned by blacks refused to sell to whites, or if one owned by Muslims refused to sell to Jews or Christians, that would be totally okay.

Take him (I’m guessing him) old-school and use the camel’s nose. “Is it ok for a restaurant manager to refuse to serve blacks?” Odds are he’ll say ‘no’. If not you may need new friends. But I digress.

If he says no, then ask why the government can force one and not the other. Remind him that several of the refusals were defended on biblical/religious basis.

There are people who think that way, but the law does not agree with them. If that baker doesn’t want to make wedding cakes for gay people, then he can stop making wedding cakes entirely and try to make a living baking cookies.

I’ve known a guy who runs a florist since we were like 12. Over the years, he has unfortunately become the walking definition of everything that’s wrong with conservatives: believes everything on Fox News; uses political incorrectness to spout bigotry; sent around paranoid chain e-mails; etc.

A good friend of ours in high school came out years later. When the subject came up about how he was doing, the response was “Who cares? That faggot’s probably dead from AIDS.”

It’s probably a matter of “when”, and not “if”, that he’ll be on the news as the local florist who told a gay couple that he won’t do business with them because of their lifestyle.

It amazes me that I even had to point out how he’s arguing against the entire concept of civil rights. We don’t allow Whites Only lunch counters anymore. Businesses can’t refuse service because of gender or because someone is Asian or Jewish or in a wheelchair. Why should sexual orientation be any different? Because someone’s religious views consist of “EW! GAY PEOPLE!”? Not good enough.

No response yet. I’m assuming I broke his brain.

That’s like suing a greasy spoon diner because they refuse to sell you caviar and filet mignon, or a Michelin 5 Star restaurant for refusing to sell chilidogs or bottomless-buckets-of-grits (oh yes, the latter is actually a thing in the South).
