Daredevil Volume 1, Issue 16: “Enter…Spider-Man!”

Matt Murdock vs. Peter Parker
Arts • Views: 36,645

Daredevil #16, published in May 1966, featured one of those “mistaken identity” battles between Daredevil and yes, Spider-Man. The Masked Marauder tricked Spider-Man into thinking Daredevil was his enemy; Marvel superheroes were always falling for this one.

And what’s more, DD kicked Spidey’s ass. I don’t need to tell you how difficult that was.

(The Lizard Collection copy of this classic comic is in excellent condition, with super-bright inks, white pages, and just a few creases on the cover.)

It’s worth noting that the fight choreographer for the Daredevil series is also the fight choreographer for the upcoming Deadpool movie.

If those fights are even half as good as what I’ve seen in Daredevil, I will be happy.

Well. Fu*k. According to the IRS, my ex and I had to file jointly one last time. Because the company that handled her retirement fund didn’t get her papers to her till Monday, we didn’t get the taxes out till today. So I sign them this morning and think maybe we’ll get a decent refund for a change.

I just got off the phone with her. She forgot the W2s & other income support documents when she mailed the 1040…

Now what?

I’ve asked her to call the IRS in the morning. And on that cheerful note, I’m off to the hotel trying not to be too upset but it’s really really hard right now.

Later lizards.

It seems to me like both the choreographer and the editor have been looking at stuff like Oldboy and The Raid. Which is good. The whole “cut before the blow lands” thing is tiresome to watch.

This video is about action comedy, but it’s more general description of Jackie Chan’s method of filming fight scenes kept springing to mind watching Daredevil.

Not a lot of things on TV more spooky than the back of Vincent D’Onofrio’s head as he stares at a plane of white.

I really like his Wilson Fisk.

BREAKING: Black judge in #WalterScott case has son who says stuff @GotNewsDotCom doesn’t like

We know it’s hard to believe, but the South Carolina judge who will hear the Walter Scott murder case is African-American. Not only that, he has a son (also African-American) who thinks policemen shooting black suspects dead is, like, a totally bad thing.

Chuck C. Johnson, editor-in-thief of the ironically named GotNewsDotCom blog, disagrees.

The boy can take one fact (a judge), another fact (his son), some critical remarks by the son, and connect the dots to suggest the judge is some kind of Black Panther dude.

Then, near the end of the piece, he says: “It’s unclear how many of the younger Newman’s views the other Newman shares.”

Supervisors at the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office were ordered to falsify a reserve deputy’s training records, giving him credit for field training he never took and firearms certifications he should not have received, sources told the Tulsa World.

At least three of reserve deputy Robert Bates’ supervisors were transferred after refusing to sign off on his state-required training, multiple sources speaking on condition of anonymity told the World.

Additionally, Sheriff Stanley Glanz told a Tulsa radio station this week that Bates had been certified to use three weapons, including a revolver he fired at Harris. However, Glanz said the Sheriff’s Office has not been able to find the paperwork on those certifications.

I’ve never gotten to sit by the glass for a pro or AHL game.

When we went to see my sister in October (fuck she graduates college the day after mr. klys’s knee surgery, this cannot be happening I am getting old), their team did an intra-team demo to raise money for the local youth hockey group and I got to sit right up by the glass.

Not a ton of checking though, because they didn’t want to injure anyone.

Of course, I had the good camera along…

re: #43 William Barnett-Lewis

Nice, I’d be interested to hear that one. Awhile back I contemplated getting a 4 watt Vox h/w tube amp that rocked. Still a little too loud for late night practice (I hate headphones). I’m wading into the digital arena to see if it works for me. So right now I’m running 2 HS7 Yamaha monitors out of a focusrite 2i2 interface. To get different tones and sounds for practice I’m running the Reaper DAW with VST plug-ins. S-Gear and Recabinet 4 for amp and cabinet sims and EZDrummer 2 for drum samples. I’ve been able to get pretty good tones out of it, especially considering I usually just play at the house. It’s been a challenge learning Reaper software, but I think I’ll get the hang of it. Recording myself has been good at identifying my many weaknesses. I’m also thinking about Band-In-A Box software but I can’t seem to find too many in-depth reviews right now.

For whatever it is worth, I don’t know that we ever had scanned copies of our W2s, etc., when we filed electronically before switching to an accountant. We used TurboTax, whatever software H&R Block put out, etc.

Just a data point. I don’t know if you guys filed as paper forms though.

51 William Barnett-Lewis  Apr 15, 2015 10:10:14pm

Interesting combo there. I’m wanting to keep it simple - a clean Fender type tone with some surf reverb suits me well. But still having serious crunch when I want it LOL

The 12/20 has a power attenuation knob that’ll drop it down to about 1/2 Watt for the late nights :)

re: #48 klys (maker of Silmarils)

We’ve been to more Wolves games than Blackhawks games, but both are great. Mrs Cranky always gets seats in the second row behind the glass. Decent protection from flying pucks but I didn’t understand why she didn’t get front row seats. Then a player was smashed into the glass in front of us and beverages from the first row got splashed about. I should learn not to doubt her. She also seems to like seats near a goal. More interesting play.

OK, I finally have an answer about the Capitol mailman fiasco:

At first he thought about using an ultralight fixed-wing plane, but that felt too threatening. He finally found the gyrocopter, which has unpowered helicopter blades on top for lift but gets its thrust from a propeller on the back. The cockpit, if you can call it that, is wide open. “This is as transparent a vehicle that I could come up with,” Hughes said. “You can literally see through it.” He can land the craft in a space the size of half a basketball court.

That’s called an autogyro, ya nimrods.

My daughter will be 22 in a few months. Wait till your body starts failing you, like when you stand up from sitting the ground like you have for five decades and something across your groin tears and you collapse saying, “Well, that never happened before!” then you’re getting old.

Hell, I’m 33 and I’ve already noticed that, for example, I can’t pop up off the floor as fast as I could when I was 22. Also my knees don’t seem to work quite as well as they used to. Not that I’m in any rush to get older but man…

I’d laugh but mr. klys, on his trip to the orthopedic surgeon, was informed that the “muscle clumping” (his words, not mine) is a symptom of getting old.

I get all the previews.

But still, she’s like …3. She can’t be graduating from college, that means I need to get shit done.

So, in the darker corners of the intertubes, the wingnuts are freaking out about Jade Helm 15, a military exercise, and this nicely ties it all together:

With news of numerous Wal-Mart supercenters now being ‘temporarily closed’ (6+ months each which brings us to October 2015 or later) in at least 4 different states now tied to the Jade Helm 15 ‘exercises’ due to what we’re being told are ‘plumbing problems’, will these massive stores soon be used as ‘food distribution centers’ and to house the headquarters of invading troops from China, here to disarm Americans one by one as promised by Michelle Obama to the Chinese prior to Obama leaving the White House? Astute story commenters were quick to point out that any plumbing problem can be fixed in much less time than 6 months, even in such large supercenters, and to have several of these 6-month closings all at once in states tied to Jade Helm 15 and martial law exercises (Florida, Texas, California and Oklahoma) reeks of something much deeper than ‘plumbing issues’. The fact that China has DEMANDED Americans be disarmed and the scheduled ‘reopening dates’ (if they EVER reopen at all!) of these stores will be after Jade Helm 15 is completed are raising many questions about what is really going on among those who are paying attention to events in Barack Obama’s ‘new America’ as seen in more detail below. One reader tells us that one of these Wal-Mart stores had just recently been remodeled and didn’t have any plumbing problems while the note below is from a source who recently called her local Wal-Mart and discovered they may NEVER reopen!

UPDATE 1-China to ban water-polluting paper mills, oil refineries

in.reuters.com

BEIJING, April 16 (Reuters) - China will ban water-polluting paper mills, oil refineries, pesticide producers and other industrial plants by the end of 2016, as it moves to tackle severe pollution of the country’s water supply.

“The long-awaited plan comes as the central government steps up its “war on pollution” after years of industrial development that have left one-third of China’s major river basins and 60 percent of its underground water contaminated.

“Growing public discontent over the environmental degradation has led to increasing scrutiny of industrial polluters. China’s largest energy company China National Petroleum Corporation last month agreed to pay 100 million yuan ($16 million) in compensation after it was accused of leaking benzene into the water system in Lanzhou in northwest China.

“But experts say much more needs to be done to protect China’s scarce water resources.” More

Yes, that’s always been my take on libertarians. All you have to do is ask them. Everything else socially or politically tied in to economics is just “chaff” to them and they don’t give a damn unless it’s an issue which relates directly to them as individuals. And of course, they never need a safety net or any other legislation which protects us because they’re so awesome! Or so they pretend, just like Ayn Rand and others of her ilk.

The Chinese don’t need to invade. They’re already buying up real estate, so they can just move in peaceably when it suits them.

Also, an invasion would tank the markets, so it would be an economic disaster for everyone.

Finally, the Chinese PLA’s readiness does not compare to the US military’s. In China, it’s possible to buy an officer’s rank, which entitles you to the uniform, the pay and the pension. You’re not expected to actually know any military stuff.

Meanwhile, Today In Theocracy, 16 Apr 2015 edition:

Private internal poll showing Gutierrez slightly ahead of Vladovic

LA Unified board President Richard Vladovic appears to be in the political fight of his life.

A recent internal poll of District 7 voters by the California Charter Schools Association and Great Public Schools: Los Angeles, which the groups shared with LA School Report, showed his challenger, Lydia Gutierrez, leading by 37 percent to 34 percent, with 29 percent undecided, in a statistical tie. The margin of error was 4.9 percent.

[…]

Yet Vladovic now finds himself in a tight race that proves party affiliation has little bearing on a school board election: Gutierrez, a Republican, is seeking her first victory in her fifth run for public office since 2008 — and she’s running strong in a district where registered Democrats outnumber Republicans by 4-to-1. In the primary, she finished only 5 percentage points behind Vladovic, who is a Democrat.

Gutierrez declined to answer a series of questions from LA School Report, seeking her reaction to the poll and comment on various positions that reflect her social positions, including her support for teaching creationism as an alternative theory to evolution.

[…]

If LA falls, so does the nation.

Therefore, both then and today, if a silly man-created ordinance does not comport with natural law realities, it is always bad law that is harmful to the public good. (Think budgets that defy the natural law of mathematics or building codes that ignore the inflexible natural law of gravity. Think property, inheritance, divorce and custody laws that refuse to comport with the natural law realities of male and female sex as it relates to pregnancy, birth-rates, property rights, inheritances, child-custody and divorce.)

[…]

In opposition to Americanism, Progressivism is the belief that every single evolved (not created) human is of no particular significance outside of the Shangri-la of a glorious collective and that only by joining the collective and making a contribution to it can he or she achieve true worth. Progressive individuals are to the government as the honey bee is to the swarm. Therefore, the government gives permission for the individual to exist. (It isn’t hard to imagine from whence abortion, euthanasia, and fascist acts of genocide stem.) Like a pot of water left unattended on a hot stove, the water will eventually boil over. Progressivism, if permitted to fester in a nation’s history long enough to reach its logical end, will also “boil over” into a fresh, new Auschwitz. Progressivism is the modern moniker of all the isms (except American…ism). It embraces Social-ism, Marx-ism, Commun-ism. Progressivism is the sum total of them all, reemerging and conquering America from within the souls of its own deceived, and at times, utterly foolish citizenry.

[…] Was Ronald Reagan the final spark of Americanism ever to be enjoyed by a free people? That, my friends, is entirely up to you. Every President since Reagan has been a progressive, in some varying degree, regardless of their party affiliation, similar to the period between 1890 and 1920, […]

I can no longer afford to get sick in NC. The Republican legislature is allowing counties to now tack on a “mileage charge” to ambulance bills. In my case, when my neighbor called EMS for me when I got sick last Nov, EMS tacked on a mileage charge of $128.12 for a 12 mi ride to the hospital. Medicare won’t pay that, so I’m stuck and cannot pay it, along with various other medical bills that are piling up.

I’ve even put off being seen for stuff I need done, simply because I can’t pay the exorbitant charges they would bring. It’s very frustrating, since I’ve always paid my bills, and I can’t expect my grandson to fill in the gaps. If I could get a job, I would, but I’ve tried the places I could work around here and can’t get hired. These bills are mounting up, past due, and I feel guilty because I’ve always paid my bills in the past. Furthermore, I have too much income (!) to qualify for Medicaid in the State of NC.

Co-pays and out of pocket expenses can be devastating if you’re strapped for cash.

And when a person is sick, not working, and can’t be classified as “disabled”, it can mean even worse.

It plays well to people who have a strong sense of what “natural law” entails, namely god, guns, homophobia, xenophobia and misogyny.

Which if you look at the true natural world (humans as the exception), those things don’t mean shit. I have never seen a duck, goose, wolf, bear, dog, or any other denizen of the natural world give 2 fucks about any of those things listed except humans. Maybe humans have drifted too far from the “natural worlds” laws.

162 Justanotherhuman  Apr 16, 2015 7:01:39am

Even with ACA, health care costs are rising, and patients are being required to assume more cost-sharing with providers. Also, some plans are bought which have high deductibles and even though dr visits, etc, all count toward it, those co-pays can kill you if your budget doesn’t allow for them, assuming you can even afford the premiums. Read some of the comments here, also, such as this one, which is the same situation in NC:

“Check out the requirements for Medicaid in the state of Virginia. I have an unemployed daughter who is not eligible for Medicaid because she has no children (!) and where is she supposed to get money for insurance premiums? I was willing to pay medical insurance premiums for her (with my Social Security payments), but the only plans we could “afford” at all were not accepted by her doctors. Her GP actually gives her a discount because she is “self-paying,” but she got a bill for $995 for some blood tests. It all sucks. (I don’t think the problem is Obamacare. It’s the state legislatures who just refuse to accept federal money… people be damned!)”

healthcare.gov

Something needs to be done and I’m one of those calling for universal health care and expansion of Medicaid as well since so many in govt, esp state govts, realizes that since wages aren’t going up, people just are avoiding either purchasing health care ins (even through ACA) or are avoiding care, since there is no alternative for them.

Sooner or later, the dumber members of the Boomer generation are going to wake up and realize they would be the biggest beneficiaries of universal health care. Either that, or they’ll be a big upswing in the number of older Americans becoming penniless and/or leaving their heirs with a ton of medical bills to settle.

It’s a demographic time bomb that Congress typically is incapable of planning for. Why should they? Congress-critters have a pretty cushy medical plan.

Bill’O doesn’t have an answer, and I don’t imagine you’ll find many of the excuse-makers who do. They want every incident to be treated as an isolated occurrence. But if they actually draw a line in the sand about how many such incidents can happen before they admit there’s a problem, then they face the possibility that they’ll have to join the “anti-police” crowd in demanding answers and changes.

I love BillO’s attempt to shift the debate by saying that “only” 135 black men died at the hands of police which is amazing because over 1 million cops.

A black man dies at the hands of the cops almost every other day and it’s amazing there aren’t more of them dying? REALLY? That’s the best BillO can do? No wonder Tavis Smalley wasn’t buying.

Tennessee House votes Bible as official state book

And my adopted home is now trying to make the Bible the official state book. This in spite of the fact that the Attorney General has already said that violates both the state and federal constitutions.

It passed the House vote, and I suspect that it will easily pass the Senate as well.

One representative tried an amendment to make Andrew Jackson’s Bible the official book, but that was defeated.

The entire article is worth reading.

The Holy Bible is the official book of Tennessee in the view of the Tennessee House of Representatives.

Despite questions of constitutionality, lawmakers beat back an attempt to make Andrew Jackson’s Bible the official book and voted 55-38 in favor of Rep. Jerry Sexton’s original bill.

“History’s going to tell us where we stand on this. I’m grateful to have the opportunity to have the side that I’m on,” said Sexton, R-Bean Station, after the vote.

“It may be kind to me in the future and it may not be kind, and that’s OK. I made a decision for today and I feel good about it.”

Although a GOP-led effort, House Speaker Beth Harwell, R-Nashville, was one of 20 Republicans to vote against the measure. House Minority Leader Craig Fitzhugh, D-Ripley, and four Republicans abstained. Only six Democrats voted in favor of the bill.

Conservatism wasn’t always the take-no-prisoners fantasy-based mess that it is today. It was at one time about being fiscally prudent and very much about avoiding foreign wars. Looking back, I think that today’s conservatism began with the embarrassments of the Watergate hearings which sowed the seeds of today’s siege mentality. It was further shaped by the Reagan years which legitimatized replacing realism with feel good fantasy and engendered the nostalgia for a stand-on-your-own-two-feet America that never existed. Agrarian life required communal effort for barn raising, field clearing, harvesting and such mundane activities as corn shucking, to name a few. In short: America never never really was what it was.
Ignoring fact and reality while generating policy is addictive because the inevitable failures of policies thus generated can be blamed on equally fact free and unreal causes. Combine that with a supportive media and here we are.

The whole Angie’s List stuff is a total deceptive mess. As a company they are in trouble and struggling.

In my opinion they can’t afford to expand and hire like they thought. They got Indiana to give them some bucks for the expansion, yet they haven’t been able to show any kind of profit for their share holders.

I think they used the religious freedom mess as an excuse to give up on the expansion and blame it on the politics of the state. It makes them look good, but they do not look too good to the business investors.

I follow Angie List stuff because they originally started here in Columbus. They also are involved in Indianapolis Motor Speedway as a sponsor for the “Indy GP” IMS road race that kicks off the month of May and their is speculation that sponsorship amounts to nothing but more politics.

I’d be very wary of calling Angie’s List anything positive.

This is true as well though. Honestly speaking of Civil Rights, that’s why I’ve never been big on the effort to praise William F. Buckley. Sure Buckley was an intellectual who didn’t speak like Louie Gohmert and was an educated man but he still pushed the insidious lie that Civil Rights was a communist plot, he still defended Joseph McCarthy for years, and he still was a defender of Apartheid. And that legacy is NRO’s.

Watergate was simply an extension of that mentality, the next logical step after you’ve covertly obliterated a sitting president’s foreign policy just to get elected.

And Goldwater’s “extremism” meme caught on so well with them.

Teaching at a 1 to 1 school, where every student has their own device(iPad, or Laptop) has challenges. There are ways that the technology can be harnessed for enhanced learning experiences, but there are challenges of competency(student and teacher) with the technology, and competency with proper educational use. There are also the proper usage questions. How to keep students on task instead of playing games. Our school has been doing this for three years, and the jury is still out if it has “Worked”. But assessing its success means that training of students and teachers is proper, which I can’t say is true at this point in time.

I do like the idea of students having tablets or laptops. I think I performed better in college in large part because I was able to bring a laptop with me to class to take notes but as Smith just got at, there are understandable concerns about whether the students will stay on task. In grade, middle, and high school. I did sometimes use an Alphasmart which was a portable word processing device but a laptop was far more conveinetn since with a laptop, it’s easier to separate files. And I like having electronic copies of my notes. I think my academic career would be much different had I been bore ten or even five years later.

I ran into the same “logic” the other day when talking with a wingnut about Kansas and the restrictions it was placing on welfare recipients, the idea that being poor is supposed to be humiliating because that’s supposed to serve as an “incentive” to climb out of poverty by any means necessary. If you’re poor, then you’ve fucked up and thus must be punished for it, even if the reason you’re poor is through no fault of your own.

It’s their Calvinist view of humanity. You’re poor because you deserve it and don’t have God’s blessing so therefore the road to success must be humiliating as possible. It just shows what shitty people conservatives are. And frankly it’s conservatives who are enabling poverty by opposing decent wages and welfare & food stamps. These kind of policies make it hard for people to get better. But things like better wages, more adequate help, and not treating the poor like scum is good because the poor do have the incentive to work harder and this much I know from experience, I know I work my best if I know the incentive is high. The fact is though the poor people they rag on are a lot harder working than the wealthy people they venerate. You can’t tell me that a single mother working two jobs doesn’t work harder than Donald Trump.

re: #194 Higgs Boson’s Mate

I agree that a LOT of this can be traced back to Watergate. Instead of being chastised by the transgressions of the Nixon Administration and their minions the GOP has instead felt like they were persecuted unfairly over it. They still seem to believe that Nixon got a raw deal and the America wasn’t to blame but that the media was, never mind the political leanings of Bob Woodward.

Since that time, what has happened, GOP has essentially co-opted the media by turning it into a financial entity rather than a news reporting/investigative entity. They’re hungry for ratings and clicks rather than accuracy in reporting and reporting the events and causes and performing analysis. My own feelings that the most evil bastards are the ones that spin the story before we even see it, the nameless and faceless news directors who decide what is “news” and how they frame how it will be presented to the folks at home. I have the feeling that the GOP totally owns those folks which is why they suffer so few repercussions from all of the whacked out shit that they do and the introduction of the magical balance fairy and how “both sides do it”.

It’s actually been a pleasant surprise with my mother’s mother’s side. Though my maternal grandmother’s mother’s father is a mystery. My great aunt kept a copy of her baptism certificate and there’s no father listed though she does have godparents listed. My speculation is sadly that she was likely a rape victim or perhaps the father of my great grandmother was some noble who wouldn’t want to be listed with a lowly peasant girl. It’s also interesting since the name listed on the record is different from the name she went by. I don’t think Ludmilla and Helena are names that are related to each other and I know it wasn’t a middle name thing since middle names weren’t part of my grandmother’s family naming customs- she herself has no middle name and neither do my great aunts/uncles on that side.

Speaking of family trees and the State of KY:

George Johnson became the first Confederate Governor of the State of KY(the shadow government of KY). He owned slaves in Scott County, near the city of Georgetown. He had a daughter with one of his slaves. That daughter was my great-great-great grandmother. Her mother is as far back through slave lineage I’ve been able to go, but can trace back through Johnson a bit more. When a black teacher with pretty dark skin can bring this information to a class full of 25 white faces, I do get some ooo’s and ahh’s.

The crazy thing was when I got to teach in my class, two descendants of Johnson (twin brother and sister) on the “white side”.

If news outlets think that running screaming headlines about errors in knowing about family stories and family trees is some sort of great “gotcha”, I don’t know what they’re going to write headlines about next.

Perhaps a candidate has mistaken milk chocolate for dark chocolate at the candy counter? How about a story where Hillary was 5 lbs overweight to fit into a skirt? Maybe we can get a headline about pedicures??

“Her grandparents always spoke about the immigrant experience and, as a result she has always thought of them as immigrants,” a spokesperson says. “As has been correctly pointed out, while her grandfather was an immigrant, it appears that Hillary’s grandmother was born shortly after her parents and siblings arrived in the U.S. in the early 1880s.” —Buzzfeed

Yeah it’s just an anecdotal story that turned out to be wrong. Like I’ll give an example using my own family lore. My grandmother always told us that her Dad was friends with Honus Wagner. If I used that to get free Pirates tickets or stuff like that, then yeah shame on me but if I mention it in a stump speech to Western Pennsylvanians, and it turns out to be inaccurate, yeah my bad but it’s not a big deal since it’s family lore. By the way I really hope that is true. I love the idea of my Pap Pap being friends with one of the best baseball players ever.

Because of who is saying it. It’s okay for Marco Rubio to make his parents out to be brave refugees fleeing the tyrannical Castro even though they emigrated here before Castro even got into power but not for Hillary to make an innocent error. Meanwhile, back at the ranch:

Log Cabin Republicans disinvited from Western Conservative Summit

As the GOP turns more theocratic, I wonder how long it will be before the Log Cabin folk come to their senses?

Note that the Western Conservative Summit looks to attract big names in GOP Presidential Primary:

2016 Presidential Contenders Lining Up to Address WCS15

Former Senate President John Andrews, who heads Colorado Christian University’s Centennial Institute, the summit’s sponsors, informed officers of the Colorado Log Cabin Republicans in an email on Tuesday that the group won’t be allowed to have an exhibitor table at the gathering, which features appearances by several potential GOP presidential candidates. The Log Cabin Republicans can, however, buy tickets and attend the conservative extravaganza, Andrews noted.

That’s after summit organizers had already processed a $250 payment from the gay-rights group for a table at the event, a spokesman for the Colorado Log Cabin Republicans said in a statement.

“It is a pretty common issue we face,” said Michael Carr, a one-time Republican state Senate candidate and the secretary of the state Log Cabin Republicans. “They’ll take our money, but want us in the closet.”

The dis-invitation “is showcasing the exact problem with the right,” Carr said. “We should be expanding the tent, not excluding people who have shared ideas and philosophies. This is the most important time for us to be reaching out to all types of groups and people, all types of Republicans, all types of conservatives. Young people especially want to see a robust political debate and this dis-invitation is the exact opposite of that. Being perceived as anti-gay turns young people off even more than it does the general public.”

In his email to the group, Andrews said the “worldview and policy agenda” of the Log Cabin Republicans — the group advocates for gay marriage, along with “fairness, freedom, and equality for LGBT Americans” — is “fundamentally at odds with what Colorado Christian University stands for, so it’s just not a fit. I’m sorry it has to be that way.”

Methinks the Log Cabin Republicans need to change their name soon. How much more of this crap will they put up with before they abandon the GOP?

Right, we’ve been hearing the tax cuts for the extremely wealthy will create jobs forever now and it just doesn’t happen. Maybe it would happen if the “creators” were more willing to invest rather than just pocket the money and put in an offshore account but they’re not. Furthermore, I strongly feel that the best way to create productive workers is to treat them like people. Pay them well, give them decent benefits, etc.

Actually, I’d go back 150 years earlier. A lot of this can be traced back to the end of the civil war. How much did we fuck up by not kicking the Confederacy while they were down?

re: #373 Blind Frog Belly White

A friend from High School posted on FB yesterday that her daughter is making the same amount she made at the same age - NOT inflation-adjusted, the same nominal dollar amount - pointing out how wages have not kept up with everything else.

Some of her friends immediately launched into diatribes about how this generation didn’t work hard enough, and wanted everything handed to them.

Then her son responded with just how tired he is hearing us Boomers talk about how HIS generation want everything handed to them, considering just how much more was handed to us. It was refreshing.

…is the concept that wages have not kept up with inflation really that hard for people to understand?

Or is it just that acknowledging that, just maybe, their collective actions have had substantial consequences on the lives of the younger generations might provoke some self-examination and potentially the need for some belt-tightening to try and fix things, both of which would be uncomfortable and are therefore better off avoided.

I’m guessing probably the second. Sigh.

I’m guessing probably the second. Sigh.

There are several things working here. First is that every generation thinks the next generation are lazy fuckers who want everything handed to them and will never amount to anything. Our parents, “The Greatest Generation”, said it about us, and we say it about the “Millenials”. No doubt our grandparents said it about our parents. We all had to walk 10 mils to school uphill through drifts of snow, while this generation blah, blah, blah…

Then there’s the assumption that things for young adults are just like they were when we were their age - good-paying jobs as easily obtainable, promotion and raises coming just as easily.

Then there’s the Free Market worship that declares that whatever you’re paid, it must be what you’re worth - assuming you aren’t in a union, or don’t play sports - so if you’re poor, you did something to deserve it, or didn’t do something to deserve better.

The first cuts across the political spectrum, but the other two are pretty much Conservative dogma.

Debunking the American Dream: Immigrants Did Better in 1900 Than in 2000

I did not read the original paper. I do wonder if the reason immigrants today seem worse off has to do with the large de-agriculturalization that this country has undergone. Once upon a time, if you were a farmer you’d be working in the median line of work. Today, farm labor is done by a minority and is less valued.
