Overnight Jam: Todd Rundgren, “Secret Society” and “Something to Fall Back On”

Everybody’s been a witness sometime
Music • Views: 29,202

Two awesome songs by Todd Rundgren, from a 1990 concert in Japan with his great “Nearly Human” band. This is Todd at his best, singing his heart out.

When we were young they would break our hearts
You and I had to go undercover
We knew in time we would be pulled apart
We found a way we could hold on to each other

Gave our souls to another world
Sealed in blood with a sacred vow
Now we’ve forgotten but beneath all this
A part of you and me is still there now, yeah

Go on and sing, go on and dance
It’ll all come back if you just give it a chance

Don’t you remember me?
We were a secret society
Like in your memory
We were the secret society

Refresh your memory
We were the secret society
Until eternity
We are the secret society

I never see you in the waking world
We make an effort to avoid each other
But every night we penetrate the veil
Where everybody acts like sister and brother

You never speak the words in broad daylight
They’re much too delicate and too naive
But everybody’s been a witness sometime
It doesn’t change it if you don’t believe, so

[Chorus]

I never see you in the waking world
We make an effort to avoid each other
But every night we penetrate the veil
Where everybody acts like sister and brother

You never speak the words in broad daylight
They’re much too delicate and too naive
But everybody’s been a witness sometime
It doesn’t change it if you don’t believe, so

So, go on and sing, go on and dance
It’ll all come back if you just give it a chance

And you’ll remember me?
We were a secret society
Not just a memory
You’re in the secret society

But you’ve got to go with me
You’re in the secret society
Until eternity
We are the secret society
Ooh, we’re so secret

[pedantic twit]

This is actually still on the Nearly Human tour, which I was lucky enough to see three times 1989-90. Most of this lineup went on to record 2nd Wind live at the Palace of Fine Arts in SF in the summer of 1990, but the band he took on the road the following year to promote the album was a bit different, and not quite as good…notably missing the late Vince Welnick, who had gone off to join the Grateful Dead..

[/pedantic twit]

At any rate, this was really a high point in Todd’s career. For some reason, Warners screwed up the promotion of Nearly Human. The Want Of A Nail was poised to be a rock radio hit, but they decided to promote a different “emphasis track” to MOR stations…yet another missed opportunity.

I’m at the Ancestral Home, visiting my 96-year old Dad. It’s disturbing. His mental faculties have diminished severely just in the last year or two. He used to be a very smart man with an incredible memory - he’d hide 30 eggs in the house for Easter and remember where they all were.

Now, he can’t remember that he’s in his own house, where he sleeps, etc. I’m not sure he knows who I am.

He seems happy, though, to have us here. And my older sisters have been doing yeoman’s work taking care of him. His physical health is excellent, which is in a way more heartbreaking.

I hate the way old age can unwrite who we are from our own selves.

You and yours are in my thoughts.

My great-grandmother passed away when I was 19. The last time she recognized me as a member of the family (not my actual name) I was 14. The last time she recognized me as me I was 12.

Of all the things I fear about growing old, that would be the one. I would rather die aware than live on fading away.

Everybody feels that way, but you’d be surprised how some people will cling to a lesser version of life. We can’t know how we would feel until we get there, I guess. I know how I feel now.

I know, but I also know what I can have put down in writing now.

Part of it is I’m the oldest of the great-grandchildren. I’m the only one who can remember her pre-Alzheimer’s.

I was almost 5 when my sister (next great-grandchild) was born.

Those 7 years? Those seven years were still quality, if hard. Maybe the nine. Sort of.

The point where she could no longer bathe herself? Walk? Chew? No. Spare me that.

The greatest blessing was that the house fire next door waited until 6 months after her passing to happen, because if she had still been alive, we would have lost both her and my great-aunt, who was her live-in caretaker and who never would have left her.

Well, been a good day for me today. The IRS came through with the biggest refund check I’ve ever had :) Got my bills caught up finally and will even have toy money left over.

Presuming the last bill isn’t too expensive (annual rent for a storage unit), I’ll order a VHT Special 6 Ultra amp and an Epiphone SG g400 66 limited edition guitar. That will be my entertainment budget for the year

I also think we project a lot about how we think we would feel under those circumstances when that may not be the case at all. We get upset when our loved ones age and change when they may still be quite content.

SW IV was written with the classic hero story as its basis (Joseph Campbell’s Hero of a Thousand Faces was Lucas’ inspiration). The sequels finished the hero arc with Luke replacing his father, but in a good way, and the quest (defeating the enemy) completed. Plus, they lived happily every after.

SW I-III were written with the classic Hollywood model of “we must make money on this franchise” by trying to redo the Luke-becomes-hero story as Annakin-becomes-villain, and largely failing at it.

I have a whole paper written on the hero’s journey in the classic trilogy. For junior year English class, if I remember corrently. I think I saved Harry Potter for senior year.

But the original succeeded because it was fun. Not because of the storytelling. Let’s face it: storytelling was not really Lucas’s forte.

Yeah. He lucked out with the first three, because the core actors managed to pull off the lame dialogue and the Gee-Whiz factor propelled the story. The prequels had none of that.

I’d argue that what made the original films successful is that Lucas had had others to bounce ideas off of, who weren’t afraid to speak their minds to him. You see a lot of the same thing in Star Trek, where Gene started out as a guy with an idea that others helped temper into something that worked, but then as he got older become this larger than life figure that nobody was willing to talk back to because it was his name on the paychecks.

Oh, for sure. But Roddenberry’s influence on the franchise waned after TNG. He would have done much different with Enterprise, I think. For the ST franchise, Bragga and Berman were the bigger problem.

That would mostly be because the studio kicked him upstairs and turned the series over to Berman. If you want a good idea of how full of himself the man had become before they wrestled things away, just watch the first three seasons. Not all at once, of course, as there’s only so much cheese the human body can handle at one time.

I wear them pretty much year round, and funnily enough, I just saw some at Rite-Aid that the sign called what they were always called when I was younger: “zoris”. For many years, I would go through every bin of zoris I could find looking for the elusive size 12s, so believe me when I tell you, I never saw them referred to as anything else.

Somebody had to explain that line in the Jimmy Buffett song to me, but soon after that I started seeing and hearing this term “flip-flops” all over the place.

I can’t seem to call them anything but “zoris”, though.

Re Star Trek: I don’t know why everybody was so down on Enterprise. After the stultifying last couple of seasons of Deep Space Nine (and Voyager altogether), I thought it was a breath of fresh air. Now admittedly, that third (?) season with their war with the Xindi was deadly, but they’d alternate with episodes that weren’t about that. re: #70 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

Then the last season with those three-parters was some of the best Trek ever, IMO.

I’m with you on Enterprise. It was nowhere near as bad as most people (Trek fans, especially) say. I just took it as yet another TV SF show with some tenuous connections to the existing ST universe, and forgave its transgressions from “canon.” The last season had Manny Coto as the showrunner/executive producer, who tried to rescue it from the Bragga/Berman mess it was in, but it was too late. Networks value ad revenue above all else, and Enterprise couldn’t hold its own against the competition in the same time slot.

I liked the tension between the paternalistic Vulcans and rebellious Earthlings, especially. The Temporal Cold War, though, made no damned sense, and the writers kept forgetting that the time period predated TOS and much of that show’s tech.

The ending was horrible. I don’t blame the actors for being bitter about it.

73 LastYearsMan  May 21, 2015 11:57:13pm

I also think Enterprise was underrated. In fact, I liked it more than Voyager and DS9 (or, at least, I liked its potential).

74 William Lewis  May 21, 2015 11:58:44pm

Potential. That’s probably the best word for Enterprise . Sigh…

re: #73 LastYearsMan

I also think Enterprise was underrated. In fact, I liked it more than Voyager and DS9 (or, at least, I liked its potential).

I liked Voyager at the beginning, but the plotlines got way off course as the series progressed. The Delta quadrant was supposed to virtually empty of any species known to the UFP, yet the crew kept running into them over and over again. I skipped the last season entirely.

DS9 I liked better, since it was more dependent on political and religious tensions than aimless wandering through unknown space.

A more creative team could have made Voyager more like TOS, maybe more like the new Battlestar Galactica, but they played it safe and avoided all that social criticism stuff.

Also imaginative SF stuff.

Just reading or hearing the word “sushi” makes me want to retch. I probably don’t eat enough fish, but when I buy it, it’s frozen and then cooked thoroughly, usually salmon, since it can contain worms when fresh and who wants fish shipped from who knows where and has been sitting around for a lot of days since it was caught?

seafoodhealthfacts.org

Parasites become a concern when consumers eat raw or lightly preserved fish such as sashimi, sushi, ceviche, and gravlax. When preparing these products, use commercially frozen fish. Alternatively, freeze the fish to an internal temperature of -4°F for at least 7 days to kill any parasites that may be present. Home freezers are usually between 0°F and 10°F and may not be cold enough to kill the parasites.

Even if commercial freezing kills parasites, I’m still not gonna eat it raw.

Maggie Gyllenhaal, 37, Told She Was ‘Too Old’ To Play The Love Interest Of A 55-Year-Old Man

thinkprogress.org

“Anyone paying attention to the pairing of men and women in movies shouldn’t be too stunned by this still appalling information. Vulture quantified this all-too-common phenomenon two years ago, “Leading Men Age, But Their Love Interests Don’t,” charting how male stars like Denzel Washington, Harrison Ford and Johnny Depp are routinely cast opposite female love interests 20 years their junior. The opposite setup rarely occurs, unless an older woman scandalously shacking up with a younger guy is the entire point of the movie, as in Jennifer Lopez and Ryan Guzman in The Boy Next Door.

“Why is this the case? When men make most of the decisions, male fantasies — or some extremist version of cis, straight, white, male fantasies — are what get portrayed on screen. In 2013 and 2014, only 1.9 directors of the top-grossing 100 films were directed by women. So schlubby, stoner bros find love with lithe, lovely blondes, and male action heroes who still remember a time before the internet continue to seduce and score costars young enough to be their daughters.” More

Is there a link to that quote? I love it.

My brother mentioned an interview given by George Miller quoting something to that effect, but no link to an article. I did some research and couldn’t find the original, but did find a few articles here and there mentioning the same thing:

The Feral Child from “The Road Warrior”:

As for me, I grew to manhood, and in the fullness of time, I became the leader… the Chief of the Great Northern Tribe. And the Road Warrior? That was the last we ever saw of him. He lives now… only in my memories.

Nix from “Beyond Thunderdome”

Time counts and keeps countin’, and we knows now finding the trick of what’s been and lost ain’t no easy ride. But that’s our trek, we gotta’ travel it. And there ain’t nobody knows where it’s gonna’ lead. Still in all, every night we does the tell, so that we ‘member who we was and where we came from… but most of all we ‘members the man that finded us, him that came the salvage. And we lights the city, not just for him, but for all of them that are still out there. ‘Cause we knows there come a night, when they sees the distant light, and they’ll be comin’ home.

So rather than try to explain away inconsistencies with the narrative and what the timeline is with the new movie, what Miller is going with that given the Wastelanders rely on an oral tradition of history, the actual Max may or may not still be out there, but the legend of Max keeps going.

And the word is they’re already working on another film and Hardy signed a three picture deal to play Max.

Never had a problem in Japan. The key is to only buy or eat sushi from someone who knows what they are doing. Fresh salt water fish are rarely a cause of problems if the person doing the preparation follows knows what they are doing.

If someone got sick eating tuna it’s not because it came out of the ocean that way, but because it was contaminated in a preparation stage somewhere.

I guess I don’t see that as being all that big of a deal. Plenty of people fall in love with others who have big flaws.

The biggest problem, and I think it is a big problem, is how Josh Duggar and all the Duggar followers so quickly project all their fears about themselves onto others, in this case the LGBT folk, to the point of reducing others to less (socially including legally) than others.

That we we intuitively, when it comes to the neo-prudery of the FRC/Duggars/etc., when they start a public campaign or pronounce so-and-so as “ungodly” or “un-American”, start to make fun of their latest claims. We know that someone so obsessed with sexuality have their own issues.

These are arranged marriages for the children. The woman is supposed to be a known quantity and subjugated to the man, just as in other cultures that practice this sort of thing. She is simply there for the man’s pleasure and to bear children.

I just can’t imagine not understanding that we are sexual beings from the womb onward, and talking to your kids about their sexuality and being open to those conversations. It’s hard, but there is plenty of material out there to help parents who don’t have a fixed mindset because of their own fears, ignorance, and inadequacies. But that happens all the time for one of the most important instincts we have but which can end up damaged for various reasons.

This is America, 2015:

Lawsuit claims evolution is a religion

A parent of a Jefferson County student has filed a federal lawsuit against local, state and federal education officials claiming the teaching of evolution, which he says is a religion, violates his child’s Constitutional rights.

Kenneth Smith, who is representing himself, filed the four-page federal lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia against the Jefferson County Board of Education, […]

“His complaint is against all Defendants, who’ve fostered the propagation of religious faith in our West Virginia public school machinery and government at large,” the May 12 lawsuit said.

Smith alleged education officials violated the U.S. Constitution because he claimed they are “propagating” a religious faith in public schools.

“Their actions during the 2014-2015 school year affects my child’s future directly through the state grading system to enter college and the ability to earn economic security and a good job in her chosen veterinarian medical field of work, by being taught a faith base [sic] (evolutionary ideology) that just doesn’t exist and has no math to back it,” Smith’s lawsuit said.

I was on a conference call last night where the subject got onto religious references in a document we were reviewing and the writer of said document referred to atheism as a religion. I refrained from getting into it right then and there, but that statement does color how I am going to view things the man in question says and writes in the future.

The discussion does make me wonder whether the man is blurring the distinction between “atheist” and “secular”. Could also be a somewhat emotional reaction to getting a document he wrote and probably felt strongly about getting butchered a bit by a committee.

I’m willing to separate the Creationism from the SSM issue, because one does not preclude the other. By that I mean younger fundies don’t seem as livid about LGBT rights and SSM as their parents or pastors, but because of poor education may still believe that the Earth is only 6,000 years old.

The polls about recent creation are worrisome, though, because it shows the RR have managed to sway public opinion toward this mythical idea. And their aggressive responses to decent science education deters teachers and schools from trying to teach evolution and the Big Bang. They’ve managed to grab the reins of local public education and they are largely in control of public debate on evolution. To make matters worse, few if any politicians - Republican or Democrat — are willing to come out and say categorically that YEC is a lot of baloney. You can imagine the response if someone did.

I’m not Catholic, but I guess you could say I’m sympathetic to it. Pope Francis may be steering the Church toward a more tolerant future, however gently. There are many hardliners in the RCC (Opus Dei being an extreme example) who would fight Church acceptance of SSM tooth and nail, but there were plenty who resisted dropping the Latin Mass. Now, Latin Mass is a rarity, almost a throwback, and the vernacular Mass has enabled the Church to spread more easily across the world.

Besides, from my POV, any bishop who complains about SSM being a sin should also have complained about priests buggering kids and shut that kind of behavior down. SSM is between consenting adults. Pederasty is not.

Polyandry is where a woman has more than 1 husband or lover. It’s believed to be practiced now only in the Himalayas, where there are scarce resources, as usually was the case in previous cultures.

Polygyny is more widespread in a variety of cultures. For obvious reasons.

I don’t really have stats on that. Just because we see a couple of Mormon fundie families in the news doesn’t mean that such groupings are objectively more frequent. Two men and a woman living in NYC as a family are just less likely to draw attention. But that doesn’t matter either. Consenting adults? No abuse? Do what thou wilt.

Hm. Thanks!

Well then.

Former President Clinton was the biggest earner for speeches, giving three that brought in anywhere from $500,000 to $1 million.

Both he and his wife gave a smattering of speeches to foreign companies and other organizations for anywhere from $250,000 to $500,000. Bill Clinton spoke to Thailand’s Ministry of Energy, China Real Estate Development Group, Ltd, and Qatar First Investment Bank; Hillary Clinton spoke to Goldman Sachs, Citibank and JP Morgan Chase, among others.

According to foundation officials, the income — at least $12 million and as much as more than twice that — was not disclosed publicly because it was considered and tallied for tax purposes as revenue, rather than donations.

In April, the head of a Canadian charity that donates to the foundation acknowledged that it didn’t disclose any of the 1,100 largely foreign donors that ultimately contributed $2.35 million to the broader organization through the Canadian group.

As much as truly dislike the current GOP scene, and am convinced our society has to move its political process beyond the current framework that is stuck in 19th century-think, I will have a real hard time voting for Hillary if she is the Dem nominee.

The Clintons come with too much baggage. Ok, so all humans have “baggage” (even if some, like the Duggars, are in denial). Still, why push someone with too much history. And that is the Clintons. Good or bad, true or conjured up in the dark basements of conspiracy nuts, there is just too much to have to deal with when one is dealing with the Clintons.

To put it in contemporary terms, the “brand” is tarnished.

Now some of you will want to point out some of those polls which show Hillary leading so-and-so GOP candidate. My question is why do you think that is so? Could it be that Hillary is one of the very few Democrats who is universally known to the American public? This is the problem that the Democratic party has had for some time - not creating enough platforms for national exposure of locally-known and promising Democrats.

I see so many complaints about our two-party system and how it seems to offer no choice, then I look to parliamentary systems that are presently basketcases because either all the political power has concentrated into two major parties or the coalition governments constructed are basically being held together with bailing wire and chewing gum.

For example, polyandry in the Himalayan mountains is related to the scarcity of land; the marriage of all brothers in a family to the same wife allows family land to remain intact and undivided. If every brother married separately and had children, family land would be split into unsustainable small plots. In Europe, this was prevented through the social practice of impartible inheritance (i.e. disinheriting most siblings, many of whom then became celibate monks and priests).

en.wikipedia.org

All forms of polygamy are, for the most part, primitive economic and social constructs, IMHO. The two-person marriage, or relationship, evolved in a changing world, although with technological changes and more leisure time, it very well could change again, but with a exponentially increasing world population, polyandry would seem to be more feasible, to preserve resources.

You can also see the monied classes in Europe in the earlier centuries tolerating more varied relationships unofficially. The women involved, of course, had a lower social status. Probably part of this is that marriages in that time period were often formatted around alliances, property, offspring etc. and thus the emotional attachments may not form. Leaving the male free to make arrangements for that elsewhere.

News outlets are making it sound like he admits that he did something wrong and willingly stepped down all of his own accord.

Duggar did no such thing. If that InTouch story never ran, he’d still be out there castigating anyone who didn’t adhere to their right wing religious fundamentalist worldview, hating on gays, and blaming liberals for all manner of social ills, all while Josh continued to hide the secret that he molested his sisters and others (and that the cop who investigated the case was himself later convicted on child porn charges). There was no altruism in his coming forward with these details.

The question really needs to be who else knew or had reason to know, and when did they know it.

Apparently Oprah did some digging after an anonymous tip led them to think something was up with the Duggars, canceling the appearance. In fact, Oprah called the child abuse hotline.

Yet, there are still people who are trying to excuse the Duggar’s crimes and coverup by pointing to Lena Dunham, when the ages of those involved are different, and the Duggar’s parents willingly covered up the criminality for years.

234 ObserverArt  May 22, 2015 7:52:15am

Hey all. Just wanted to stop in and say hi!

I am in the process of starting to (finally) stain my staircase in this old house. Lots of detail and surface when you add it all up, so It’s going to take me some time to get it right. I’m thinking this will be an all weekend deal. Considering I’ve been stripping, sanding and puttying since late last year (off and on as tired fingers and hands allowed), this will be the good time.

So, I see upthread The Donald called America a “hell hole” these days. He should know, it is all the assholes like him that help make it this way.

And also upthread, what was that back ‘n’ forth over fantasy movies liked or disliked. To a degree I understand what negativ was saying about super hero and fantasy movies, but I sure would not have said it such a negative way to the people that like ‘em.

All movies are a form of escapism. For some reason, there are a lot of movies made these days that have more fantasy based themes rather than based in everyday modern realities.

Who knows, maybe there is a reason that people don’t want movies too real as everyday reality may be too real enough. So, you can put the message in something set in a far past time or a future time and get the same point across. Maybe escapism is very much needed these days where when I was younger we may have been more into wanting to battle the real.

I am not a big fan of a lot of newer movies, just like I am not a gamer. I did some computer racing simulations and liked that, but time to try to do other things needed turned me away from all that. Big deal, that’s me. I’m sure not going to say others shouldn’t enjoy what they enjoy. Times and tastes change. Welcome to earth.

And with that…going to go wash my car, do some shopping, house cleaning…and staining. Have a good day/weekend/holiday. In and out all weekend.

Oh yeah…more emails from Ricky Santorum have hit my mailbox. What a putz. Also, I have a feeling all the debate about the debates is going to draw John Kasich to speed up his decision. I bet he gets in, his ego needs it.

If we could all live on our own 40 acres of land that we carved out of the pristine wilderness by the sweat of our brows, then we could live the government-less Jeffersonian fantasy that lies at the root of libertarianism and Randism.

I assume by “cable” you mean the various packages of source material (in the old days we called them “channels”.)

The physical connection, though, is still for almost all people the preferred way to hook up to the internet.

And it is here where the cable companies still enjoy their advantage. Cox keeps raising my rates for my internet connection. I buy no entertainment package from them, but now they have raised the internet-only package to $69/mo for a decent high-speed connection.

Roughly the reason I keep my Comcast cable TV part of my package. Dropping down to internet-only doesn’t save me that much money. And I do like watching sports enough to keep the TV active during football season and the spring playoff season.

“The Duggars are now trying to destroy the evidence. They are using the excuse that one of the girls is still a minor. With this request they have outright admitted that Joy was also a victim. Joy will be 18 in October.
Basically, they just want this to all go away. I seriously doubt they care about Joy. It’s more about trying to rebuild the parents’ and Josh’s reputation buy shredding the evidence. A court order won’t change the fact that this report if out there. It is everywhere! Once it shows up on the internet, it will always be on the internet.”

re: #252 lawhawk

There has been a degradation in content across the board.

The History Channel, as you noted, is now more about alien nazis.

The Learning Channel has morphed into trash tv.

National Geographic, post Murdoch buy-in, now is into selling Je$u$ to the bible belt.

We were warned of this. The idea that 500 channels would have 100x the valuable content of 5 channels is just wrong. What we now have are lots and lots of nonsense with an occasional high-quality (in either content or production value) entree here and there.

The over-the-top model is clearly winning the day but that is incremental and, as some have lamented, even reinforces more the epistemic-closure problem in our society.

But… in an over-the-top paradigm at least national borders are easier to cross, and as an English speaker I find more productions from the UK or Ireland or Australia into which to pour my spare time, if I have any.

And for the Duggar-Honey Boo Boo confluence. The mom from the Honey Boo Boo show is threatening to sue Discovery Networks over their handling of their respective shows following the revelations of sexual abuse.

Like I was saying yesterday, this is only going to get worse.

More power to her. They shitcanned her show within hours of the revelations hitting the air, but seem to hoping to weather this particular storm. I haven’t seen any statements from TLC since yesterday, and I imagine that that’s because they’re consulting with lawyers about whether or not they can just kick Josh off the show without getting embroiled in a contract dispute.

304 freetoken  May 22, 2015 8:39:03am

If history is any guide - think Jimmy Swaggart or the Bakkers - then the American hyper-religious society will just shrug off the Duggar thing as some sort of temptation by Satan and proof that they are in a “spiritual war.”

Nothing can separate Je$u$ from the marks.

305 Nyet  May 22, 2015 8:40:41am

“Innocent until proven guilty [in a court of law]” is a purely legalistic, processual statement which limits the power to pronounce people legally guilty to proper courts. A state can then deal with the legally guilty people as needs be, and must set legally innocent people free (possibly with compensation). Nothing less, nothing more.

Obviously, a legally innocent person can be an actually guilty person and vice versa, a legally guilty person can be an actually innocent person.

If a rape did happen, it doesn’t cease to be rape regardless of whatever a jury decides (or vice versa). But legal consequences for the rape can only follow after a jury or a judge decides. So Nolte is deliberately confusing legal principles with epistemology. If we have enough evidence to think someone is a rapist, we can call him or her a rapist regardless of whether a court decided anything, we just can’t act against this person directly.

Speaking of UpChuck, I saw this on the BBC early this morning and it made me think of his proposed extortion/business model:

US embassy worker in London accused of ‘sextortion’

Michael C Ford, who has lived in the UK since 2006, was arrested last week while visiting family in Atlanta.

Prosecutors say Mr Ford hacked accounts of women to obtain sexually explicit images of them.

The US State Department says he is no longer working at the embassy.

Mr Ford threatened his victims with the stolen images, demanding that they shoot videos of other women undressing, prosecutors said.

“I want you to record videos of sexy girls changing. In gyms, clothing stores, pools… You do that, and I disappear,” he wrote to one victim, according to the court documents.

When the victim did not comply, prosecutors said he wrote a follow-up email. “OK, time’s up. Everything I have will be posted online and sent to your friends. Pictures, name, phone number, home address… I gave you a chance and you blew it!” it read. […]

Given the years of abuse, and the coverup by the parents, I don’t think they can avoid canceling the show in its entirety. The whole thing is tainted by the abuse.

If I were one of the lawyers working on the show, I’d use the character/judgment/good conduct/morals clauses that are typical in these contracts as grounds to cancel the show. Now that it’s become known of the criminality and the coverup, and likely refusal to divulge this information to producers pre-production, the producers would have every right to kill the show.

For instance, see the morals clause here (page 15). And Discovery would have every right to do the same.

With HBO going with an over-the-top model, and certainly other major production and distribution houses will too, then I don’t see why people will want to buy the pre-packaged channel assortments.

What this means of course is that the cable companies will continue to lose subscribers to channel packages, but not subscribers to cable use for internet.

I fully expect Cox to continue to raise my internet-only rates until they are the same as the highest channel-package.

It may take 5 years, but they are well on their way there.

Real classy guy, your guv. ////

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m one of about 38 people in NJ who didn’t vote for him twice. No regrets.

Here’s the thing, though: even though I didn’t vote for him, I was sort of willing to sit back and see what he could do. See if that “We’re turning Trenton upside down, it’s no longer business as usual” talk was more than just bravado. Christ knows this state has earned its shitty politics rep.

I voted for Menendez, McGreevy, and Corzine, so I’m fairly cognizant of the glass state I live in.

But then, off the top of my head: the “humiliate teachers at town halls and post them to YouTube; the “Cut taxes with no way to pay for them” shit; Bridgegate; letting Exxon off the hook for the Bayway/Bayonne spill; blowing a chance to get millions of dollars of federal education funds; screwing up the budget.

That’s not business as usual. That’s fucking lying during two gubernatorial campaigns to the votes, knowing goddamn well you’re going to keep perpetuating the political sewer environment this state is saddled with.

And people, both here in NJ and across the country (albeit in dwindling numbers), think this guy is suited to run the country.

Nope.

My brother mentioned an interview given by George Miller quoting something to that effect, but no link to an article. I did some research and couldn’t find the original, but did find a few articles here and there mentioning the same thing:

The Feral Child from “The Road Warrior”:

Nix from “Beyond Thunderdome”

So rather than try to explain away inconsistencies with the narrative and what the timeline is with the new movie, what Miller is going with that given the Wastelanders rely on an oral tradition of history, the actual Max may or may not still be out there, but the legend of Max keeps going.

And the word is they’re already working on another film and Hardy signed a three picture deal to play Max.

This reminds me of a trilogy a friend of mine wrote long ago. It was an action type trilogy (DiVinci Code style) of two college archeologists who found a scroll in the middle east on a dig. It was a scroll that detailed a traveler, a story teller, who went from village to village and told, well, stories. The stories were just that, stories, not history, just fiction. The stories were about a man named Jesus.

He never let me read the trilogy but I sure would have liked to. It sounded fascinating.

Huckabee has come out in support of the Duggar clan. I shit you not.

Janet and I want to affirm our support for the Duggar family. Josh’s actions when he was an underage teen are as he described them himself, ‘inexcusable,’ but that doesn’t mean ‘unforgivable.’ He and his family dealt with it and were honest and open about it with the victims and the authorities. No purpose whatsoever is served by those who are now trying to discredit Josh or his family by sensationalizing the story. Good people make mistakes and do regrettable and even disgusting things. The reason that the law protects disclosure of many actions on the part of a minor is that the society has traditionally understood something that today’s blood-thirsty media does not understand—that being a minor means that one’s judgement is not mature. No one needs to defend Josh’s actions as a teenager, but the fact that he confessed his sins to those he harmed, sought help, and has gone forward to live a responsible and circumspect life as an adult is testament to his family’s authenticity and humility. Those who have enjoyed revealing this long ago sins in order to discredit the Duggar family have actually revealed their own insensitive bloodthirst, for there was no consideration of the fact that the victims wanted this to be left in the past and ultimately a judge had the information on file destroyed—not to protect Josh, but the innocent victims. Janet and I love Jim Bob and Michelle and their entire family. They are no more perfect a family than any family, but their Christian witness is not marred in our eyes because following Christ is not a declaration of our perfection, but of HIS perfection. It is precisely because we are all sinners that we need His grace and His forgiveness. We have been blessed to receive God’s love and we would do no less than to extend our love and support for our friends. In fact, it is such times as this, when real friends show up and stand up. Today, Janet and I want to show up and stand up for our friends. Let others run from them. We will run to them with our support.

Let’s parse this apart. His parents didn’t honestly and openly address the issue for months. They covered it up. They didn’t seek professional help and guidance, instead going to the church where they gave him “counseling” for a couple of months and left it at that. And throughout the entirety of the show’s existence they’ve proclaimed their worldview superior to all others, even as they were covering up their son’s sexual abuse of family members and others.

Four Home-Schooled Brothers Plead Guilty In Rape, Assault Of Sister

Four homeschooled brothers pleaded guilty Thursday to molesting their younger sister from the time she was 4 years old until she was almost 15 - and their parents and two other brothers still face charges related to the case.

The oldest brother confessed in December 2012 to molesting the girl after becoming a born-again Christian, and a pastor from the Baptist church in Wake Forest, North Carolina, contacted authorities the following day.

“He confided in his pastor and his pastor told him that was wrong and not the way normal families are,” said Perquimans County Sheriff Eric Tilley.

Eric Jackson, then 25, told authorities that he and all five of his brothers had sexually abused their younger sister for a decade, and authorities say their parents knew but did nothing to stop the abuse.

Will the Huckster defend these perverts as well?

Josh’s defenders are saying he was “just a kid” when he did this and “not fully mature” so it’s not appropriate to hold him fully accountable for his actions.

And yet these are the same people who would be screaming for a 14 year old black kid to be tried as an adult and get the death penalty if he sexual assaulted a white girl.

Hypocrisy at its finest I suppose.

Fuck no, they were “just asking” if Brown had a juvie record and wanted everybody to know that Garner had a long rap sheet, even if the majority of the shit on it pertained to arrests over selling loose cigarettes. Likewise they kept repeating the shit about Trayvon and the backpack, along with rumors of his beating a bus driver. They habitually delve into the muck whenever a black man/teen is the subject of death-by-cop/asshole. But when a white guy is involved, “It’s in the past!”

Very common here. As a result of such prosecutions some states have added specific exemptions to the statutory rape laws allowing for a 2 to 4 year (depending on the state) differential in age to not be an offense.

STUPIDEST MEME OF THE DAY==>

385 Nyet  May 22, 2015 9:50:16am

This “let’s cover it up” mentality seems rampant in insular religious communities.

Rabbi Shraga Feivel Zimmerman was giving evidence on Tuesday in the trial of 50-year-old Todros Grynhaus, a prominent member of the Charedi community in Salford.
Father-of-ten Mr Grynhaus is charged with five counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual assault against two girls committed when they were aged around 14 and 15.

[…]
The jury have previously been told that the strictly Orthodox Charedi community often shuns the outside world and children are not allowed access to television, radio and the internet.

[…]

It has also been said there is a reluctance to report unlawful matters to the police, with Charedim instead preferring to settle matters ‘within the community’.

[…]

Rabbi Zimmerman said: “At that point nobody wanted to report it. Everybody wanted him to seek therapy and to heal himself and not be a danger to the general public. Part of any therapy is admission and taking responsibility for what you did.”

thejc.com

From the dates in the article it seems that they waited around 2 years before reporting it to the police.

re: #385 Nyet

He got convicted yesterday BTW:

thejc.com

And here’s a nugget of wisdom from his dad:

During the trial, Grynhaus’s father, Dayan Dovid Grynhaus — a senior rabbi in the London strictly Orthodox community — told the court that sexual abuse in the Charedi community was “traditionally something that should be dealt with as sin, not something to be reported to the police”.
Giving evidence in defence of his son, he was asked what punishment would be issued for sexual abuse by the Charedi community. He said: “It would be seen he was never in a position to repeat such things. Safeguards would be put in place. Punishment would be a good dressing down by the Beth Din.”

Thankfully there were some sane voices:

In one letter, distributed to the Charedi community, Dayan Chanoch Erhentreu, former head of the London Beth Din, wrote in Hebrew that “in cases such as this religious Jews are obligated to use the full power of law to rid our community of such disgusting acts which crush people and families”.
