Driftglass: The House Select Committee on Sidney Blumenthal

What I can say is that this ongoing molestation of our democracy by the Right will never end as long as Fox News voters continue to elect Fox News Republicans who promise to enact Fox News talking points rather than engage in the hard and boring job of responsible self-governance. Because Benghazi is Whitewater. Benghazi is Obama’s birth certificate. Benghazi is Planned Parenthood and ACORN and Jade Helm and WMD in Iraq with a side of Freedumb Fries.

As everyone now knows (but the media refuses to say out loud), the Right is now defined entirely by a wildly paranoid “secret narrative” of vast conspiracies, villainous betrayals and promises of ultimate victory that reads like the Book of Revelations as written by Alan West and edited for teevee by Joseph Goebbels.

Benghazi is just another in that endless parade of spiteful, popskull delusions with which the bigots and imbeciles on the Right shut out the real world.

OT (but it’s Friday so who cares).

Early this week I got 2 scuba regulators from Ebay, well, I’ve tested them out, 1 is in pretty good shape and the other one is going to need some serious attention. Good news, a rebuild kit is only 30 bucks, all the ‘hard parts’ that don’t get replaced look good, so a new set of O-rings and soft parts should have it working good. Worst case, if I can’t save it I’m out 100 bucks (for a reg. worth about 400-500 if I can salvage it). If I get it working I’ll be 7 for 7 on ebay regs, worst case 6 for 7. (and more gear than I can actually use at the moment.)

A buddy told me today “Steve, you’re a gear slut, but the good thing is that you’re a cheap gear slut”

We are going to learn a lot more at the debate next week. Perhaps Jeb! will show up full of piss and vinegar ready to duke it out, but I seriously doubt it. If he is having money issues now, what is it going to be like when he is soundly beaten in two of the first three contests? He has ZERO chance for a good result in Iowa, and a only slightly better chance in South Carolina. You’d assume he could manage in New Hampshire, but that is not really a given either.

Again, it might happen and obviously the establishment is behind him. Having said that, the establishment has never been weaker (take the dumpster fire in the House as an example of this) and is in no position to make chicken salad out of chicken shit. I predict it is just a matter of time before Rubio becomes the official anti-Trump.

Please consult Hitler’s Time Travel Exemption Act from TVTropes:

“If you time-travel into the past and then try to kill Hitler, it won’t work as intended. It may even backfire.”
— Rules of Time Travel

If you were given the power to travel through time and Set Right What Once Went Wrong, what would you do to prevent the atrocities of the past? For many, the answer is obvious: kill Adolf Hitler. This would prevent World War II, the Holocaust, and their myriad side-effects… right?

Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way.

First of all, it often proves near-impossible to kill the man in the first place; like most dictators he’s protected by various bodyguards and security forces. After all, the guy survived about 42 (known) real life assassination attempts — maybe one of them was (or will have been) yours! Trying to circumvent these by targeting him before his rise to power begins will usually turn out to be ludicrously difficult as well. Locating a lone, disillusioned war veteran wandering around post-WWI Europe is perhaps the ultimate needle-in-a-haystack search.

And a mortar attack by Radical Islamists gives us a story featuring the phrase ‘Benghazi attack’ that is actually about Benghazi:

Benghazi attack: Six die as mortars hit Libya protest

Mortar rounds have been fired at a crowd of demonstrators in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, killing six and injuring at least 35.

Several hundred people were protesting against a proposed UN-backed peace deal that would form a new unity government.

The mortars were fired from an Islamist-held district, a police spokesman told AP news agency.

Over the last year, Benghazi has seen fierce clashes between the military and various Islamist brigades.

Among them are Ansar al-Sharia and groups that have pledged allegiance to the so-called Islamic State militant group.

Erick Pastuizaca, 18, and Manuel Pastuizaca, 19, allegedly stabbed the 41-year-old man as he walked on 41st St. near Sunset Park around 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 16, according to a complaint filed in Brooklyn Criminal Court.

“I’m going to stab you because you’re Arabic and deserve it,” Manuel allegedly said.

The man survived and the brothers face charges including assault as a hate crime.

The reason has to do with the fact the the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA)’s Red Line and Purple Line Express trains run less than a block from the east side of Wrigley Field. The ‘W’ and ‘L’ flags are flown to let people riding the trains know the outcome of that day or night’s game.

Note: These are light-rail size trains, with the Red Line being by far the more numerous. The State Street Subway is part of the Red Line.

Today’s Dems don’t descend into the sewer as often as today’s GOPers. Exhibit A: Trump and his xenophobia and demagoguery. Exhibit B: Carson and his xenophobia and penchant for comparing Dems to Nazis and calling Obamacare “the worst thing since slavery”, etc, etc. Currently these two totally unqualified buffoon candidates are getting over 50% of the GOP vote. A commenter on Steinbaugh’s blog makes the case that Chuck’s new filings are in some ways worse:

These new filings aren’t any better - and are in some ways much worse - than the initial filing. A few thoughts (on why John C. Burns shouldn’t be a lawyer):

First Amended Complaint

John C. Burns shouldn’t be a lawyer. No, really. The judge just struck Plaintiff’s opposition to the motion to dismiss, in part because the lengthy fact section was “excessive and inappropriate.” The judge (very generously) gave Burns a few days to fix the problems with his filing. Copying and pasting the bulk of the fact section into a First Amended Complaint that he needs the judge’s approval to file is a really bad idea.

The fact section continues to show that Burns has no clue what is relevant to his client’s claims. This is about what Gawker and its purported agents said about Chuck Johnson. The First Amended Complaint doesn’t start discussing the defamatory statements until page 21 (of 54) - almost half of the pleading is irrelevant crap. It doesn’t matter what Gawker said about Tim Geithner, James Franco, Louis C.K., or Jason Whitlock. Nobody cares about the detailed procedural history of Johnson’s litigation for records about Michael Brown. Greg Howard’s article about Charles Barkley and Eric Garner is worthless to the discussion. The fact section of a complaint should tell a coherent story, and the only story the First Amended Complaint tells is that John C. Burns is a terrible lawyer.

Worst of all, Burns added a cause of action alleging that Gawker is the government because it benefits from a federal statute: “Defendants are state actors by virtue of their use of CDA § 230, in that they use that statute as a shield to enable them to take otherwise illegal and unconstitutional actions.” (FAC, p. 49, para. 271). That’s possibly the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen a lawyer write on behalf of a client.

Opposition to Motion to Dismiss

So, John C. Burns is a stunningly bad lawyer. The motion to dismiss was based on the original complaint, which is still the operative pleading in the case. For a motion to dismiss, the Court generally can’t consider anything outside the pleadings. Burns needed to cite to facts alleged in the original complaint. But Burns supports his opposition by citing exclusively to the facts alleged in the proposed First Amended Complaint.

There are a lot of other problems with the opposition, but they all pale in comparison to the fact that he doesn’t know which complaint he’s defending.

There’s more but those are two most damning observations.

That’s the best party for the occasion.

When my dad died, we had a rabbi speak. My family, being not terribly religious, didn’t have a ‘personal’ rabbi, he was brought in from the funeral home. He called all our living relatives and collected stories about my dad. I wasn’t aware he had done that. When he talked about my dad’s life, I was surprised by a lot of the stories. Everyone was laughing. At a memorial service.

It was exactly what he would have appreciated. I certainly did. It was the best send off I could imagine.

When my husband died I honored his memory (and his stated desires) by having a party, not a somber memorial. I piled up his mountain of goofy ties and “uglies” and invited our guests to chose one to keep in his memory. Food, booze, stories, memories… all befitting the way he wanted to be remembered.

Not to mention they continue to drag women through the mud who want to be able to do what they want to with their own bodies and demonize people for their sexuality. No, they’re not terrorists but they’re assholes who have encouraged xenophobia at his president simply because it got votes.

What an incredibly thoughtful rabbi, taking the time to gather stories about your dad. I love it.

Amazingly so. My dad was almost 90. He came to the US from Poland, lived through WWI, WW2, being called a like (and fighting kids over it), working in a Tannery from a very young age, as the older brother, so my uncle could be the first to go to college.

I loved my dad with all my heart. I couldn’t have asked for a single thing more when he died. His memorial will be with me for the rest of my life.

It’s not just directed at Lizards: It’s also a my way of saying to anyone else who sees the post that Hillary Clinton isn’t the enemy. Whatever she may have done, she’s not one of the people who should be the target of anger relating to the events of 9/11/12.

I admit saying things the way I do is “Magical Balance Fairy”, but the issue is complex enough that a more nuanced treatment would be overly long and not read.

You’re preaching to the converted here.

Da Fuq! None of the states in the middle east are proxies for Russia or China? Bombing Iran or Syria won’t lead to a great conflagration?

Dude, what the fuck.

1. For China, no. China’s relations with Iran and Syria are strictly business. Russia has a patron relationship with Syria but not with Iran.

2. We’re already bombing Syria, just not the parts that Bashar Assad’s forces control. And once again, no one is saying we should bomb those places.

3. While agitation over Iran continues, no one of stature is advocating military action at this time. Sanctions, yes. Saying the nuclear agreement was a bad idea, also. But no one in prominent is claiming we should just start bombing, and not even Louis Gohmert thinks we should invade Iran.

Except they don’t believe in diplomacy. They don’t believe in detente. They speak about foreign entities with derision and belligerence. They say BOMB. Do you think that doesn’t mean war? We’ll bomb some country into submission? Because that didn’t work out so well in Iraq. And Iraq is podunk compared to Iran and Russia.

I think you’re taking him too literally. While your party may not actually want WWIII, they want a bigger, even more expensive military. They want a more bellicose leader and a more aggressive foreign policy. And they want to intervene abroad militarily more often. So the gop is generally much more likely to get us into another Iraq like quagmire, even if that doesn’t expand to WWIII. It’s your party (GO HAWKS!). Own it.

And you party DOES want some sort of war with Iran. Which of course could blow up into a full scale regional war.

And speaking of Syria, we just sent some heavy hitters to give ISIS a pounding there:

A-10s deploy to Turkey to fight ISIS

The article starts with can only be described as a fanboy line:

The A-10 is once again teaching the Islamic State that “death” is spelled “BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRT!”

Navy Cmdr. Elissa Smith, a Defense Department spokeswoman, confirmed Tuesday that the U.S. has sent A-10s to Turkey after the French news agency Agence France Presse reported that 12 A-10s had arrived at Incirlik Air Base.

The A-10s and airmen are with the 75th Fighter Squadron from Moody Air Force Base, Georgia, Smith told Air Force Times. They are replacing six F-16s that have been flying combat missions against the Islamic State from Incirlik since August.

“The planes are deploying as part of OIR [Operation Inherent Resolve] and will be available to be flown in either Iraq or Syria depending upon the need,” Smith said in an email Tuesday.

Ground troops love the A-10 because its 30mm gun has often meant the difference between life and death, but the Air Force has tried to retire the aircraft to meet the deep spending cuts imposed by Congress. Retired Gen. Mike Hostage, the former head of Air Combat Command, told reporters in July 2014 that the A-10 could not survive combat missions in Syria, but A-10s went on to prove him wrong.

They want an invasion of Iran, which no other country wants, save possibly Israel. That type of invasion would be met with a resisting force that includes the Russians, who will then proceed to take back Soviet lands.

A friend of mine from elementary school works for this resort (and environmental foundation———development is very restricted to maintain the natural paradise surrounding the abodes). It was always a fantasy of mine to go there——-they have less expensive bungalows as well. This particular place tended to be rented by rock stars and the like. Sure, the bigger tragedy are all the poor families facing the destruction of their homes but it is also a shame that such architectural gems could be destroyed. DF is the ultimate purveyor of the attitude that ‘Both Sides Are Wrong So Vote Republican’ - you see it with him on an almost daily basis. He’ll throw a token bone here or there to a Progressive cause and / or politician - but Hillary Clinton could literally cure cancer and he’d still wind up voting Republican. In fact, in reading his posts for the last several years now I’m convinced that even if Trump is the GOP nominee - even with all his anti-Trump talk, he would wind up voting for him over the Democratic nominee.

That type of party loyalty, honestly, scares me - if there’s a Democrat that I just can’t stand personally or politically (for whatever reason), they’re not getting my vote just because they have a (D) next to their name.

At some point, you would hope he would realize how much of an utter clusterf*** his party is and that they don’t even let their moderates speak up anymore, lest they get shut down by the right wing noise and media machine - but I honestly think he really, deep down, doesn’t care. He’s shown (up to this point) an unwillingness to change or flex on these things… I really think he DOES know how screwed up his party is, but he doesn’t care enough to vote for the other party to entice some actual change.

My parents were both hardcore Republicans, so is my Father-in-Law .. and practically every day I point out to him how wrong he is on issues and cite the facts and figures to prove it - I don’t feel some whacked out sense of ‘party loyalty’ because the people who raised me or I love in my life have different political ideals than I do. To me, that’s loyalty for all the wrong reasons - and it doesn’t make for a better world.. it just makes for more automatons who cling to tradition for tradition’s sake when there’s a whole bigger, better world out there if they just open their eyes.

Has an impact. That’s snotty and presumptuous. Maybe people think that’s what You’re Welcome is?

15 inches of rain has fallen about 50 miles south of Dallas.

North Texas Lizards, stay safe!

I haven’t seen austin_blue around, what’s the deal?

Video

(Sorry, I saw an excuse to post one of the Best Worst Movie Scenes of the 90’s.)

DFW is getting metronomic passing downpours. This afternoon was strange though. Near my job we had a thunderstorm squall pass through that stopped traffic, tore down highway signs, and reduced visibility to zero. Wind gusts were somewhere around 60mph and it came out of nowhere. I took video from my office window that looks like some of the hurricane footage; It was through and gone in two minutes and it left a 15-foot highway sign bent and discarded on the lawn across the ramp from my building. It was lucky that nobody was hit with debris, it could have killed someone.

Flooding may be worse further south. The F1 race at COTA has been affected too, I believe they cancelled practice today and may compress qualifying and the race into a one-day Sunday schedule.

War porn? In non picture form, yes that article had some of that. But I made it clear that was present when I posted the article. And the article did have relevance and substance.

Very few people would go all out to protect Holmes. Doing so would be difficult, dangerous, liable to alienate others, and quite possibly futile in the end.

In reality, and I know its fucked up, if and when Holmes is killed most Americans will be glad he is dead.

re: #161 Dark_Falcon

Note to all: The people who fire mortars at crowds are the only “Benghazi Villains”. Not Trey Gowdy and not Hillary Clinton; The villians are the terrorists.

Yep, the terrorists are awful people, the absolute no-exaggeration fucking worst.

But you can’t explain away other bad behavior by point out bad behavior, not matter how reprehensible.

Right now, there’s a whole bunch of shit that isn’t being dealt with because we’ve got a witchhunt posturing as actual government business. Also, that particular shitshow is built on blaming a fellow American and claiming that somehow she’s such a horrible person that she was just cool with letting four people die. It’s can’t be waved off, Dark.

This isn’t foolish or funny anymore. This is not merry punch-ups on a schoolyard where ultimately we’re all comrades after the scuffle resolves. This is exploiting procedure to dig and dig and dig to try and find something actionable, combined with strategic “leaks” that dirty the target. At best it’s beyond low; it’s vicious and its exploiting dead men that deserve better; at its worst, it’s a fucking re-enactment of Soviet show trial. Either way, it’s scary to watch and un-American. But then again, apparently only certain people get to dictate what “American” is, and people like me are malcontents or dupes.

Is it strategic or genuine? Don’t know, don’t care…in fact, we’ve now reached the point in wingnuttery where you can’t tell idealism from cynicism, because there’s stable underpinning of veracity: yesterday’s bullshit is today’s gospel. And it’s not like Benghazi is some kind of isolated incident; it’s just another point in a X/Y plot of faked materials versus increasingly strident, conspiracy-theory-laden, zero-sum social conservative rhetoric in the Capitol. It falls in a on rising curve along with the Shirley Sherrod mess, the ACORN sting, the PP videos, and about a dozen forms of science denialism that stretch back to the 70s. The slope is getting steeper because the data points are cropping up faster.

ACORN got defunded, Dark. That fucked up voting for people. Shirly Sherrod got fired. Lots of other horsehit like that: stupid blustery shit that had real ramifications. Texas is witchfinding through PP’s paperwork for *something* that looks guilty—including patient files—right now, and since the legitimate and shady wings of the anti-abortion movement are completely sympatico about doing shady shit (and cheering on the occasional murder), there is a perfectly rational fear that people’s names will be leaked.

I repeat, perfectly rational, because even the most reasonable members of your party—people with actual political power—kiss the ass of crazy people who care a great deal about souls and not a bit about actual human beings. Perfectly rational because Darryl Issa’s office leaked like a spastic colon through multiple, groping attempts to make Benghazi a scandal. Perfectly rational because James O’Keefe videos still result in “concern” and hearings. Perfectly rational because ridiculous quacks and outright frauds dictate the narrative on Middle East policy and the very nature of world’s second largest religion. Fucking Chuck Johnson is part of the bullshit distribution system of fake and deceptive shit; he’s only slightly outside the “normal” distribution of bullshit-fabricators that get bylines, make millions, and get to go all the best conventions.

The “real enemy” has been around since 2001 if you’re an American…or somewhere between a century and thirty years ago if you’re Central Asian or Middle Eastern…and the minute Islamic terrorism hit’s the US’s radar, it was used by the GOP to push through ridiculous, rights-violating shit. And before that, we were totally cool with Islamic radicals and tyrants. Do you understand how fucking horrifying it is to be just aware of enough Islam to realize that the leaders of my country have been listening to quacks and Apocalypse-fetishists? And they’re setting us up for another fight—Iran this time—sabotaging a multi-national attempt to deal with the problem…because why? Because it’s a win for Obama? The looming threat overseas does not make completely unreliable, vainglorious, deceitful people good allies. They’re willing to lose the long game—avoiding another big war that will further destabilize and broken region—to win the short game of their next fucking fundraiser.

Your party ran away from the middle, on purpose. It courted the lunatics, the paranoids, and the fanatics, and try to manage them like they were a bloc: from the Southern Strategy to the Tea Party, it swept up every variety of resentful crank. The reasonable, “honorable” politicians of old were perfectly happy with the sky pilots, racists, and tinfoil-hatters as long as they were the side-piece. Now that arrangement has gone to shit because the bloc has realized they’re The Bloc, “the base” that must be appeased. So the great “resistance” against reactionary horseshit involves a lot more soft soap handjobs than the revolts of history…because, dammit, the GOP wants the base, and the base wants its crazy bukkaked across the nation.

I am strangely unwilling to fall on my sword—or any sword—to save the the Republican party from its long-term mistress arrangement with Crazy. I’m not going to jump into a “fray” that is an act of consensual copulation. Nor will I be a sad 50s housewife and accept that its my fault that Republican Party brought home someone in a tinfoil hat, gave them money and a townhouse, and drops by for sweaty sex every other day, or any other “why did you make me do this” formulation.

We don’t punish criminals to make victims or their families feel good, or feel better.

My car was broken into once. Very neat job. When I discovered it, and got over the initial shock, I was so angry at the feeling of violation that I fantasized about catching the thief in the act, and what I’d do to him. You don’t base a system of justice on angry animal feelings, and the overwhelming anger that can come with loss is one of the worst.

The first alpine ski racing World Cup race is about to go down!

American women skiers have become favorites this winter due to the unfortunate season-ending injury that Anna Fenninger of Austria endured during a practice run a week ago. Lindsey Vonn, who traveled to Sweden this week for the first World Cup race, dropped out of the race and cited a broken ankle she was nursing (she broke her ankle 10 weeks ago training in New Zealand).

That leaves local (for me, anyways) hero Mikaela Shiffrin, who’ll be competing in the technical events (Giant Slalom and Slalom).

Lindsey went skiing, despite her not competing.

And when the racers can’t run the course, Mikaela doesn’t bore easily.

re: #282 teleskiguy

I should append this. There are two types of ski races, speed and technical. The speed events are called Downhill and Super G. The technical events are called Giant Slalom and Slalom. It’s all about how many turns there are in a course, Downhill being the very least amount of turns and Slalom being the most amount of turns.

Skiing.

I want to go skiing.

So I missed the news that Ahmed and his family are moving to Qatar. What’s interesting is that they are moving not for the duration of Ahmed’s education, but for good. What a nice country it is, too:

Flogging is used in Qatar as a punishment for alcohol consumption or illicit sexual relations.[96] Article 88 of Qatar’s criminal code declares the punishment for adultery is 100 lashes.[97] Adultery is punishable by death when a Muslim woman and a non-Muslim man are involved.[97]
[…]
Judicial corporal punishment is common in Qatar due to the Hanbali interpretation of Sharia Law.
[…]
Stoning is a legal punishment in Qatar.[105] Apostasy is a crime punishable by the death penalty in Qatar.[106] Blasphemy is punishable by up to seven years in prison and proselytizing can be punished by up to 10 years in prison.[106] Homosexuality is a crime punishable by the death penalty for Muslims.[107] The abaya must be worn by women.[73]

I wonder why they are not moving to Sudan though. Both Ahmed and his father seemed to have taken a liking to its genocidal war criminal of a “president”.

And the foundation that gave out the scholarship, ain’t it nice too?

thedailybeast.com

But the pull backwards also is obvious—even with Sheikha Mozah. Her foundation is set to host a series of religious prayers and lectures as part of a month-long annual Ramadan program to be held at the charity’s new lavish mosque in Doha’s Education City. The flier for the Ramadan events promises well-respected religious scholars but among the invited there figures a preacher who has described the Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris as “the sequel to the comedy film of 9/11” and another cleric who says, “Jews and their helpers must be destroyed.”

Critics say the presence of so-called “hate preachers” like Charlie-mocker Omar Abdelkafi and Aidh al-Qarni at the Qatar Foundation’s mosque, which was inaugurated in March with Sheikha Mozah in attendance, is not unusual. In fact the preacher chosen for the mosque’s inaugural prayer service three months ago was Saudi cleric Saleh al-Moghamsy, another unflinching advocate of stern Wahhabism. Al-Moghamsy argues that al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden died with more honor in the eyes of Allah than any Jew, Christian, Zoroastrian, atheist, or Islamic apostate simply because he died a Muslim.

Crawling Neutrophil chasing bacterium (Fagocitando bacteria)

This video is taken from a 16-mm movie made in the 1950s by the late David Rogers at Vanderbilt University. It was given to Thomas P. Stossel via Dr. Victor Najjar, Professor Emeritus at Tufts University Medical School and a former colleague of Rogers.

It depicts a human polymorphonuclear leukocyte (neutrophil) on a blood film, crawling among red blood cells, notable for their dark color and principally spherical shape. The neutrophil is “chasing” Staphylococcus aureus microorganisms, added to the film.

Good Morning Lizards.

The Kid started his new job today. He was so excited he was up at FOUR AM , he started at 7,lol. Haven’t seen him this happy in a long time. This company better treat him well or they will not like who they end up dealing with. (me)

I survived the driving anxiety/fear thing for a total of 300 miles in 3 days. It’s exhausting fighting through that. I got nowhere near a car yesterday and was a hermit. But I navigated through horrendous traffic, around some pretty gnarly accidents and spent a total of 17 hours driving The Kid back and forth without incident. It sounds like a small thing, but for me it’s a Big Effing Deal. I still am not ready for I-75 or 285 around Atlanta, but there’s a lot of other ways to get places without them. I’m kinda proud of myself. Anxiety and Panic Disorders suck, it’s really hard to get through it without help and support, of which I have little if any. I did it! Suck on that, Anxiety.

Hard to compare, all Ahmed did was build a science project.

Yes, and his father has a major flair for the dramatic (which I see a bit in Ahmed as well). Which is part of why this move by that family strikes me as something of a Flounce by the father. Rather than move to a more hospitable place in the US, he chooses to relocate to a Middle eastern country that, whatever offer it made, has problems with justice that dwarf those of Texas.

Texas can, after all, be persuaded to change its laws or policies, as its legislature showed this year by passing a law mandating police body-cameras and setting standards and rules for their use. The Gulf States tend to react violently to the same times of public protest that caused Texas to pass new laws.

Ahead of that that visit, Ahmed has met with another president. This meeting is a little bit more surprising.

According to the Sudan Tribune, Ahmed met with Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir in Khartoum on Wednesday evening. The Paris-based Web site reports that the teenager told reporters that he was “extremely delighted” to meet Bashir and hoped to return to visit the Sudanese president again “with a new invention and success.”

I don’t really agree with the ‘war criminal’ part, but your point was well made and it can at least be debated. The knock against George W. Bush is really more of the old Nuremberg charge of “Crimes Against Peace” for invading Iraq. That does not make the subsequent battle casualties “mass murder”.

That’s the line they’re going with - that this batch of GOP inquisitors couldn’t ask the right kinds of questions to get Clinton in trouble. If only they had been the ones to do it.

And it necessarily means that they will seek out yet another committee and yet another hearing and yet another set of questions, because their inquisition/witch hunt must bear fruit. It must. Because they’ve staked so much to “knowing” that the Administration did wrong.

Indeed. And this is after considerable tongue-bathing of Trey Gowdy as The Guy To Take Down Hillary, because he’s such a smart, sharp prosecutor.

The problem is, even the best prosecutor has to start from an actual, verifiable crime, and work to prove the accused did it. Here, they’re CERTAIN the accused committed a crime, and they think it’s their job to FIND IT!

Hence the meandering, fragmented, incoherent questions; the increasing wrath and frustration, and Gowdy’s admission at the end that they didn’t learn anything new. It can’t be that there’s nothing new to learn. It must be that they didn’t dig deep enough. This is the kind of thinking that leads to torture as part of interrogation.

Less than you’d think. Reagan came to want ABMs like the Pershing II and the SS-20 gone, in part because of a TV movie:

This TV Movie About Nuclear War Depressed Ronald Reagan

“I ran the tape of the movie ABC is running on the air on Nov. 20,” Reagan wrote in his diary on Oct. 10, 1983. “It’s called The Day After. It has Lawrence, Kansas wiped out in a nuclear war with Russia. It is powerfully done, all $7 million worth.”

“It’s very effective and left me greatly depressed … My own reaction was one of our having to do all we can to have a deterrent and to see there is never a nuclear war.”

One thing to note regarding Ronald Reagan’s comment about The Day After’s budget: He meant that the movie’s producers and director used their money to good effect and showed that a big impact was possible on a modest budget. Having been an actor, he retained a notable interest in moviemaking.

BREAKING! Jeb! Endorses Donald Trump for President!

409
HappyWarrior  Oct 24, 2015 • 9:33:19am

I think that one article about how conservatives will lie to themselves and only get more extreme if Trump or Carson is the nominee and they get beat. Hell, that’s something I actually saw granted on a fairly small scale but it still did happen here in Virginia when Cuccinelli lost. I have no idea who the GOP nominee for governor in 2017 here will be but the odds are good it’s either a crook like Ed Gillespie or a nutjob and a crook in Cuccinelli. Seems to me that the R party doesn’t want to evolve. It just wants to as then Senator Obama said cling.

Is there info about the PP congressional “investigation” committee? Who is leading it, etc? I think they need to hear from us. Daily. They’re going to drag those fucking videos into this, as well as try doing to PP what they did to ACORN. Not only shut it down, but also make sure the mere name of the organization is synonymous with corruption and in this case outright murder. I guess the best thing that can happen is to hope that whoever they call up to testify is as well prepared and has the stamina Hillary did. Meanwhile half the working people in this country make less than 30K now, college is unaffordable, our infrastructure is crumbling, our schools need proper help and a ton of other issues. But no, let’s rob poor families of healthcare and family planning resources. And this bullshit of “well there’s other clinics the poor can go to” is just bullshit. Funds have been cut to the bone for county health clinics all over the country.

This bullshit is happening because the politicians (they sure as fuck aren’t legislators) are not even remotely worried about their job security for pulling this shit. They need to hear from people besides their dumbass base.

GOP homophobia/anti-civil rights on display: Florida anti-gay bill would let doctors & hospices refuse to serve gays

I’m still flabbergasted by this. I mean I get that some fringy nut-burgers would think that that was reasonable but for lawmakers to indulge such dangerous policy initiatives is outlandish.

What would be their policy justification? That gays are sinners (in their view, not mine)? Well so are rapists and murderers but we don’t deny them healthcare. How can they think that gays are worse sinners than murderers? Not murdering is one of the ten commandments so it has to be a more serious an infraction than eating shrimp, mixing fibers or being gay.

Obviously, being gay is not worse than being a rapist or murderer. What pisses conservatives off is that they used to be able to discriminate against gays in all sorts of ways and now they feel robbed of their petty sport.

re: #405 Barefoot Grin

This is what I get from conservatives I know. Since it is a given that Hillary is a lying liar who lies, the Benghazi hearing just showed her dastardly cunning/GOP ineptness in the face of her brazenness.

I’ll re-quote that epic post from Driftglass…with a bonus link to Charlie Pierce.

Benghazi is their bottle and their needle, and because today’s Benghazi is always doomed to fall apart once it touches the scalding rays of reality, the Right is forever scuttling on to the next Benghazi, and the one after that, and then the one after that. And they will pay anyone, elect anyone, worship anyone who will promise them that the river of bullshit in which they live will never run dry and leave them flopping around in the open, humiliated and destroyed by those horrible Liberals.

The full lineup of Republicans on the committee: Marsha Blackburn, Tennessee; Joe Pitts, Pennsylvania; Diane Black, Tennessee; Larry Bucshon, Indiana; Sean Duffy, Wisconsin; Andy Harris, Maryland; Vicki Hartzler, Missouri; Mia Love, Utah

The three congressional investigations into Planned Parenthood this year have all turned up nothing, but that hasn’t stopped House Speaker John Boehner from yet again attempting to take down the nation’s largest women’s health care organization. On Friday, he announced that Tennessee Rep. Marsha Blackburn will chair a select panel charged with investigating the group—and that she’ll be joined by seven other anti-abortion Republicans, all of whom cosponsored a recent bill to defund Planned Parenthood.

The democrats are still considering boycotting the committee. I don’t think that phone calls to the republicans will accomplish much. They’re not going to listen.

Downding. Your far-left attack on George W. Bush is Rejected.

Far left? You’re the delusional guy who can’t seem to stop voting for maniacs because of some bizarre fixation on how your parents voted. You’re hardly the guy to be the arbiter of extremism. Now on to the actual issue I raised, George Bush is undoubtedly a war criminal. He perpetrated acts of torture, and invaded a country under false pretexts which resulted in at least a few hundred thousand deaths. He ordered the atrocities at Abu Ghraib. That’s a war crime. It’s a fact that over 100 prisoners died in US custody under the torture regime. In light of those facts, I take your “downding” as a badge of honor.

I know what my sense of morality says and I don’t need my parents to tell me who to vote for.

Besides medical professionals take an oath to heal people not “Oh I won’t help them if I don’t like them.” It’s bad enough with the Kim Davis’s or the bigoted bakers and florists who think they don’t have to treat gay people equally. You share this coutnry and planet with gay people. Treat them like fucking human beings. I may think wingnuts are assholes but I would have my medical license removed if I found out say Trey Gowdy was my patietn and I refused to operate on him because I think wingnuts are assholes and nursing Gowdy back to good health would allow him to continue to do shit like the witchhunt he’s in charge of. There’s a really fucked up segment of this country that seems to think that “religious beliefs” should be an excuse to deny someone everything including life itself. And frankly this legislation is why the GOP is helpless. Instead of getting better regarding gay people’s humanity, they’re getting worse. It’s not at all different from the KKK’s comeback that they made in the Civil Rights movement years.

It’s one thing to be able to run and understand that if you win your party and the indys you persuaded will get behind you. Think about where Bernie or Hilary would be with their side of the aisle the minute they swear in.

OTOH we have a winner that will preside (at best) over the proverbial herd of cats. Cats that are fighting. The indys you bring in will expect results, a unifying presence, or else their support blows away to the opposition. The hawks want war, the evangelicals purity and the establishment guys just want an organization. There is not one candidate the GOP will unify with. Not a soul.

re: #411 A Mom Anon

The members have been appointed. You should be able to find the list.

The bigger problem is the nature of the inquiry. Boehner said this, as he announced the committee and the Inquisitors who’d be on it:

“At my request, three House committees have been investigating the abortion business, but we still don’t have the full truth.”

Once again, an open-ended “investigation”, with no list of questions it is tasked to answer. Once again, the declaration that there is TRUTH! that has yet to be uncovered. That’s not how you conduct a serious investigation. That’s how you conduct a witchhunt.

A serious investigation has a set of well-defined questions it has to answer. If the answer to one of those questions leads deeper, then the investigation goes deeper. If it answers all the questions and none of them leads deeper, the investigation ends.

A witchhunt starts with the presumption of a crime even if none is evident. It digs until it finds that crime and the guilty party, even if it has to invent both. If it can’t find any, the witch hunter becomes more extreme in his investigation, because clearly the TRUTH! is too well hidden. Torture becomes acceptable, because there MUST BE a crime to uncover, and the deeper one goes without finding it, the bigger the crime must be.

ETA: This is why there’s a 4th Amendment requiring probable cause for search warrants, to protect citizens from open-ended investigations.

I think you’ll see a “compromise” choice emerge in Cleveland next summer. No idea who that will prove to be. I honestly thought Walker would be a tough GOP candidate. Except even Pinochet didn’t have an outstanding warrant for genocide.

There are people in this country that don’t want to be seen standing next to Obama and a hug with him can be a political death sentence.
