Video: Excerpts From Mitt Romney’s Attack on Donald Trump

An unprecedented intra-party battle
Politics • Views: 37,799

Watching Romney’s speech earlier, I was reminded of why I didn’t like this guy when he ran for president; his basic hypocrisy and robotic stiffness remain intact. It was kind of fun to watch this super-rich heir to the GOP’s fortunes attack another super-rich Republican trying to run for president, and certainly unprecedented.

But if any Republican establishment leader thinks this speech is going to stop the rampaging Trumpenstein, they’re dreaming. Donald Trump is popular with the right wing base precisely because of the attributes Romney decries — his egomania, his vicious attacks on foes, his dishonesty, his racism and xenophobia, his misogyny, his belligerent and stupid ideas on foreign policy. I don’t know if there’s any way for the GOP fat cats to stop Trump at this point, but this definitely wasn’t it.

But the real target of Romney’s speech wasn’t Donald Trump; it was Hillary Clinton. The GOP establishment is terrified that nominating Trump will hand her the presidency.

Alot of what Romney says about Trump is true but you could say a lot of the same things about Romney.

It’s completely amazing to me that what amounts to the power brokers in the GOP establishment haven’t yet figured out that Trump’s rise is due in large part to the fact that the base feels betrayed by exactly the sort of politician that Mitt Romney was in 2012. If anything, this will only feed Trump’s argument that he represents a bold new option that the party is trying to damp down.

Smrt, guys.

If the GOP wanted to stop Trump, they should have stopped pandering with the anger, hate, and nonstop obstructionism over the past 7 years.

They should have stopped supporting candidates who are obstructionists whose only idea of government is to burn it down and screw all Americans in the process except the 1% who would benefit from lower taxes.

They should have considered this kind of speech the moment Trump declared himself a candidate.

Instead, they revealed that the problem isn’t substantive, but stylistic. After all, Trump’s policies aren’t far removed from the other GOP candidates - tax policy is the same - shifting tax burdens from rich to everyone else, anti-Muslim xenophobia, race-baiting, and pandering to those who feel disenfranchised because others now have the same exact rights that they do (see gay marriage, women, etc.).

Romney giving this speech now does nothing except give Trump the ability to further rally the core GOP voters to his cause.

Even if GWB and GHWB came out against Trump now, it’s too late.

The time to have done that was years ago, when the GOP determined that their sole mission was to capitalize on anti-Obama hate.

Now? It’s only going to tear the party a new one.

Of course, I don’t think they have anybody better to deliver Romney’s message.

Because the party is garbage and sucks. If there were such a person, they would already be running for president and they would be winning.

I really really think that the establishment itself is divided on Rubio. I think Rubio was a terrible idea for an establishment type candidate since he’s got so very little accomplished. You know that causes resentment among older Republicans like Christie and Kasich who have thicker resumes.

13
Big Beautiful Door  Mar 3, 2016 • 9:41:48am

With no endorsement by Romney of Rubio, will he jump into the race, and try to win California and some of the other late primaries like Washington and New Jersey so that he has at least a veneer of legitimacy to support a contested convention giving Romney the nomination?

I think this is actually a trial balloon for his name being thrown out as an option during a hypothetical brokered convention; Rubio has proven he can’t pull off a win, everyone thinks Cruz is a dick, Kasich will be out by then. I think Romney is going to be the establishment choice if the nomination fight gets that far. Even if Romney can’t pull off a win himself (not sure many people believe he would be able to), he won’t tank the down-ticket races and cost the GOP the Senate.

Staggering observation is no less staggering for its monotony: the US is a two-party system in which one party does not offer actual policy proposals: it just says “we don’t like that”.

Trump campaign co-chair arrested for conspiracy to commit an offense against the United States

Jerry Delemus, the husband of a New Hampshire Republican lawmaker and co-chair of the stat’s “Veterans for Trump” coalition, was arrested Thursday for his role in the armed standoff nearly two years ago at the Bundy ranch.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested Delemus on nine federal charges — including conspiracy to commit an offense against the United States, threatening a federal law enforcement officer, obstruction of justice, attempting to impede or injure a federal law enforcement officer and several firearms charges, reported Portsmouth Patch.

I had to turn my TV off this morning because this asshole was on every channel. He never answered one question about anything, it was all deflection. George Snuffleupagus pressed him a little, but the asshole simply can’t answer a question, EVER. He’s a scam artist, and I would bet money (if I actually had any) that Drumpf donates literally nothing to any charity except his own crooked “foundation” and there’s probably a shit ton of other dirt attached to his finances that would sink his ass if people had a clue.

I try not to let politics get to me too much, but I broke down crying this morning. So many die hard Republicans simply do not care as long as their vote pisses off one of those lazy, good for nothing liberals. I cut someone else out of my life this morning, she didn’t vote in the primaries because FUCKING BEN CARSON doesn’t stand a chance of winning. “He makes the most sense out of anyone.” HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE????

The Ghost of Bork Bork Bork Bork  Mar 3, 2016 • 9:59:40am

A major problem with this kind of critique is: Donald Trump is not inventing new rhetorical devices or even giving an especially novel performance.

His success mirrors the success of Tea Partiers—whose excesses of bravado and fear-mongering he is basically the bio-acculmation of…like a tuna full of mercury. Trump re-emerged as a politician by going Birther in 2012. That was, whether intentional or not, his first political gambit. And it succeeded.

But it’s worse than that: even “mild” GOP politicians like Mitch McConnell use tropes about how the past eight years are about “unprecedented power grabs” and “illegal actions” to leverage their obstructionism as patriotism. Other Trump lines—like how we’re “weak” and “laughed at ” overseas—are even older than the 2007 crop of moral panics: a whole bunch of the language about foreign policy and war footing gelled post 9/11.

(And in many ways, Trump’s performance is just the natural successor to the role invented by Rush Limbaugh.)

In a very real sense, Donald Trump’s positions are coherent with the message that the GOP and its cultural adjuncts have perpetrated for a very long time. They have marketed on the basis that anything less than their policy is the end of America and the beginning of a horror movie. Outlets like Fox News and the stable of wingnut websites have created an entire ecosystem of fear and arrogant anger, but also created a kind of in-grown conspiracy logic in which all critique is treasonous and the product of malefic conspiracy by those that want to hurt “Real America.”

Donald Trump has carried that line to its natural next step: a very direct, open nationalist chauvinism that counts all detractors as enemies of the state. He may not get the nomination, but he’s catalyzed a cultural shift that had already started a decade ago. If he flops today, he will still have shifted the political landscape. Trump-imitators will follow.

This is the golem they crafted, arrogant in the idea that the know-to-be-uncontrollable force of fear and hate could be harnessed for venal goals.

If I recall correctly, in order to be nominated at the convention, a candidate must win at least 8 primaries/caucuses. At least on the first ballot. So basically, they need the Not-Trumps to actually win states so they can get on the floor ballot. Cruz has won 4 states, and perhaps he’s got a chance to win a few more in the midwest where the evangelical vote would be big.

As long as Trump doesn’t have a majority they can change the rules. That rule was only to keep Ron Paul from giving a convention speech in 2012 anyway.

There is a revitalization of downtown. However I have a problem with that in that most of the properties are being bought up by Dan Gilbert (Quicken Loans) and he owns everything in sight, and everybody works for him like the second coming of Henry Ford.

I will give Chelsea all the credit for handling it the way she did. That is the product of growing up in Clinton Political World. And she learned. A lot. Speaks to how well she was raised…in my opinion.

Out of curiosity…does it say they have to win at least 8 primary/caucauses in the same election year?

2. “Who cares if the newspapers here hate me? No one reads them anyway.”

3. “I just got back but I’m going on vacation next week for my wedding anniversary.”

4. “Trump isn’t holding me hostage. I think he’s the best to beat Hillary. Cruz and those other guys suck.”

Ok, I’m feeling a little vicious at the moment. I didn’t get a chance to read this whole thread but I have been reading a lot and I think people don’t know the first thing about the GOP establishment. They are all about the power. They don’t care what Donald Trump would do if he gets elected. He’ll do exactly what they want him to do. In spite of the teabagger caucus, Congress is doing exactly what the GOP wants it to do. The GOP doesn’t fear a Donald Trump Presidency, they fear a Donald Trump candidacy. They’re afraid he’s going to set the movement back far enough that the gains they made in 2010 and cemented in place with voter ID laws will fall apart. The George W. Bush presidency is to blame for Obama, Obamacare, gay rights, peace, recovery, and humanity. That administration was so bad that the Democrats picked up a shitload of seats in 2006 and even more in 08 or else they would never have passed Obamacare, for example.

The first image is in Montreal, the second is in Rockingham according to Google image search.

Burlington is listed as one of the top livable cities and I think Bernie was a good mayor. He kept green spaces and public spaces and fought the corporate interests from ruining the waterfront.

As mayor, Sanders led extensive downtown revitalization projects. One of his signature achievements was the improvement of Burlington’s Lake Champlain waterfront.[12] In 1981, Sanders campaigned against the unpopular plans by Burlington developer Tony Pomerleau to convert the then-industrial[65] waterfront property owned by the Central Vermont Railway into expensive condominiums, hotels, and offices.[66] Sanders ran under the slogan “Burlington is not for sale” and successfully supported a plan that redeveloped the waterfront area into a mixed-use district featuring housing, parks, and public space.[66] Today, the waterfront area includes many parks and miles of public beach and bike paths, a boathouse, and a science center.[66]

Doesn’t excuse that absurd Bernie tweet about Clinton being responsible for Detroit but this is not a good response.

How far north? If you do near north (within a couple of [1-5) miles of downtown) go to the area near DePaul University. There’s the fondue place DF mentioned a few days ago (Geja’s) and if you stay in that area, there are many places to go.

Closer to downtown would be “Rush St” and the area south of “Rush” - which leads directly to downtown. Not all the places are on Rush, look at Division St near Rush. Also, just west of Rush off Division is Wells St which is where Zanies comedy club and Second City are located. Not bars, per se, but both would be worth a look see. The area I was speaking of near DePaul is just north of Second City maybe a mile or so…close to what’s called the Lincoln Park neighborhood.

Right outside of downtown proper (where the Rock and Roll McDonalds is) has lots of great restaurants and bars.

I can give you more on restaurants than bars since I am not, and never have been, a bar person. I used to go dancing back in the day but just hanging out in a bar wasn’t something that was part of my regular experiences.

Isn’t Austin Alex Jones’ hometurf? I bet Morrow has some ties to him.

I hadn’t heard about Morrow until yesterday, but I’ve been morbidly fascinated by him since. It’s like watching a continuous train-wreck take place.

At first I wasn’t sure if he was simply a loon or a performance artist. But, given how long he’s been at this, I have to go with loon.
He is a JFK conspiracy nut (LBJ did it).
He co-authored a book with conspiracy author and former Trump adviser Roger Stone.

He did an Alex Jones Info Wars interview during the 2012 primaries where he trashed Perry.

He’s not partisan, just unhinged; he goes after the Bushes and Rick Perry with as much vitriol as he directs against the Clintons.
He seems preoccupied with sexual hypocrisy of bible thumping Republicans. And, when asked in an interview if there was a president who wasn’t a sexual deviant or hypocrite, he praised Jimmy Carter.

He’s also articulate (though extremely vulgar) and a Princeton grad.

He attributed his win to his name being listed first on the ballot.

I’m planning to get a hotel fairly close to Wrigley. Not sure yet. Once I get my plans settled, I’ll talk to ya though. Wrigley is pretty close to the Lake right?

Yes, it’s maybe a mile-ish from the lake. Honestly, I wouldn’t stay in that area. Unless there is a game there is little to do and it’s ok-ish as far as neighborhoods go (put it this way, I wouldn’t want to just wander about the Wrigley area at night). There are some good food/drink places down Clark (from the corner of Wrigley, which is Clark and Addison, south on Clark). Further south at Clark and Diversey are more options for food and drink.

Check some of the discount sites and the ratings. Unless there is a reason to be near Wrigley, that’s not a great starting/central point for much of anything.

I think the smart play for Romney would have been to hammer home how radically different Trump sounds now compared to 2012 and then openly question whether the guy had a stroke or is suffering from dementia or something. It’s sad!

It would be a tactic that is unprecedented, scandalous, and really rather reprehensible, but who gives a damn? The Donald is all of those things already, and it’s not like Mitt was ever going to run for office again. I think it might make Trump explode into a cloud of orangish puffy rage, and the media loves nothing more than to endlessly repeat scandalous things.

This is as far as I’ll go on the whole Bernie-Hillary thing:

Any one person will have their own reasons for preferring Bernie or Hillary. I have mine, you have yours. And your reasons may well be better than mine, objectively speaking. But here’s the thing: you can only go so far in trying to persuade me of that fact before your efforts become counterproductive. If you’ve laid out your case cogently once or twice, and I haven’t changed my mind, that may be very frustrating to you, but you have to accept that it’s obnoxious to keep trying beyond that point. In fact, it defeats your purpose to keep trying because the only effect at that point will be to reinforce me in my view.

And I say that as a primary-Bernie, general-either supporter.

re: #334 darthstar

Fair enough. I agree Hillary isn’t anything like Trump. But I do disagree on Bernie not being as qualified as she. And while the African American vote won her a bunch of red states on Tuesday, those states are gone in November as they were for Obama. And if she wants to win, she needs to get a message together about shit she wants to get done instead of simply saying that Bernie wants to do too much. Complaining that students are getting raked by financial aid institutions isn’t the same as saying the government should pay for their educations.

I would be astonished if Bernie Sanders does much better with AA voters in the rust belt states than he did in the deep South.

So the mistakes of the Sanders campaign will be relevant in states that are critical in November.

By the way, I’d be delighted if Sanders managed to turn it around by the time we get to the rust belt primaries, but that seems most unlikely. Lessons are apparently not being learned.

All the more reason to give them a chance to actually have a say in the direction of the Democratic Party, so that it can become a party that the boots on the ground think can win in their districts.

Or shall they just piss off and do what us blue-state voters tell them to do?

I agree. Which is why I think Super Delegates shouldn’t be counted until the convention. Pledged (elected) Delegate count is 577-386 right now - and that’s the only number we should be looking at. Remember, Hillary was calling for Obama to drop out because she had more Super Delegates at this stage in 2008.

And yes, this isn’t 2008…Bernie’s not Obama…but I’ll continue to be skeptical of the whole process until I’m ready to concede.

Kentucky (one of those “red states”) went for Bill Clinton over George HW Bush in 1992, and again in 1996 beating Bob Dole.

Though it would probably take another third party run like Perot’s for it to happen again. That is a distinct possibility this year.

USA Today, The Miami Herald, and Knight Ridder commissioned accounting firm BDO Seidman to count undervotes: ballots that did not register any vote when counted by machine. BDO Seidman’s results, reported in USA Today, show that under the strictest standard, where only a cleanly punched ballot with a fully removed chad was counted, Gore won by three votes.[38] Under all other standards, Bush won, with Bush’s margin increasing as looser standards were used. The standards considered by BDO Seidman were:

Lenient standard. Any alteration in a chad, ranging from a dimple to a full punch, counts as a vote. By this standard, Bush won by 1,665 votes.
Palm Beach standard. A dimple is counted as a vote if other races on the same ballot show dimples as well. By this standard, Bush won by 884 votes.
Two-corner standard. A chad with two or more corners removed is counted as a vote. This is the most common standard in use. By this standard, Bush won by 363 votes.
Strict standard. Only a fully removed chad counts as a vote. By this standard, Gore won by 3 votes.

THIS. I live in GA. I’m from Ohio. I left when my auto factory job got sent to Japan, after struggling for several years to survive in retail jobs. There were jobs here, my daughter was a toddler and politics didn’t really influence my choices. I was 26 then. I’m about to turn 56.

I get seriously sick of liberals telling me I should just move. I wish the hell I could. But, you kinda have to have a job to go to and actual money to move. Especially if you’re a working class family in the 50K range or lower. My husband had a 110K a year job until the economy tanked in 2007/08. He was middle management and one afternoon, after 15 yrs with the company and the promise of a dept VP promotion they let him go. 6 months severance pay and a hearty fuck you. We lost our life savings after that. It took him nearly 10 months to find another job. We have no savings and no retirement left and a house that needs repairs we can’t afford and most likely will have to go more into debt to make before we could consider selling this place and making any sort of profit. We’re not lazy, we’ve done all the things this fucking culture tells you to do to be successful. And it hasn’t worked.

And as far as all of us here in the South deserving what we get, HOW in the hell is that shitty attitude any fucking better than the assholes who whine and cry about “taking their country back”? You know what? If Democrats down here weren’t a bunch of cowering whiny Blue Dog ass kissers who are so scared of criticism they just go along to get along we might have made more inroads here. In GA, the ONLY real Dem presence is in Atlanta, Athens and Macon. The rest of the state is solid red and alot of us, and I mean more than there ever should be, face ballots on Election Day with NO Democratic challenger at State, Federal and Local levels. There is no outreach, no events except boring as fuck little dinner meetings where nothing is done except fundraising for Atlanta dems. The National level Democratic organizations don’t invest a fucking penny here and it does not matter how much someone like me raises hell. I don’t deserve to be written off because of geography and gerrymandering. And anyone who thinks the whole of the South should be written off with a “fuck them”, well fuck you too. I’ve heard enough of that shit and that’s a big part of why this part of the country is full of retrograde assholes who long for it to be the 1860s.

re: #434 HappyWarrior

Was a full-scale asshole back then already.

In December 1996, a press conference was called by William J. Bennett, Senator Joseph Lieberman, and activist C. DeLores Tucker, aimed at MCA, the owner of Interscope Records. Calling several albums released by the label - including Antichrist Superstar — “profane”, “violent”, “filth”, and “crap”[105][106] the group questioned MCA president Edgar Bronfman, Jr.’s ability to head the label competently while profiting from such material. That November 6, U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Oversight of Government Management and Restructuring held a public hearing on the effect of violent rock and rap lyrics on youths. Supporters of the band claim it was merely another salvo in Senator Lieberman’s declared war on the band. The hearing, chaired by Representative Sam Brownback, featured the testimony of Lieberman and Tucker, and of Raymond Kuntz, of Burlington, North Dakota, who blamed his son’s suicide on Antichrist Superstar, which Lieberman denounced as “vile, hateful, nihilistic and damaging.”[106]

And I’ll add the third mistake in 2000: Nader

*Albeit, not Gore’s fault*

Fucking Nader.

re: #437 A Mom Anon

The National level Democratic organizations don’t invest a fucking penny here and it does not matter how much someone like me raises hell.

Same in Kentucky. That’s why we have McConnell, Paul, a bunch of asshole congresscritters, and Gov. Bevin.
Kentucky isn’t worth spending time and money on, but sure good enough when it comes time to beg for donations.

re: #407 Fourth Football of the Apocalypse

Oh, our military is “depleted”.

On that very point, Stonekettle goes nuclear:

All these right wing loons saying the military is depleted or needs to be stronger, please be specific - what isn’t strong enough. What must be even stronger?

Or, is that really code for the willingness to consider negotiations and diplomacy before using bombs as a last resort. Because that’s exactly what the GOP is doing. They think Obama isn’t using enough force - dropping enough bombs, as though that’ll solve insurgencies, conflicts, and make our enemies cower.

All the bombing in the world didn’t defeat Vietnamese insurgents. Bombing Chechnya didn’t end the insurgency there. Afghanistan. Iraq. All places where military force proved inadequate/insufficient.

On and on it goes.

But the GOP thinks we need to spend even more on the military. Memo: we already spend more than the next 10 countries combined (and that includes our allies among big spenders). We are throwing down a trillion dollars on a new fighter jet program to combat what exactly? When exactly was the last air to air fighter battle because the new plane can’t even do air to ground properly for another few years.

We’re buying new carriers (and I’m a fan of carriers and carrier aviation because of force projection), but we have more than the rest of the world combined - and again, that includes France and UK - our allies.

So, when you hear we need to rebuild our military, it’s really about fear projection.

We would now be much farther along in switching to renewable energy to address climate change.

We would be yeah.

And the SCOTUS would have probably been much more liberal.

I loved Obama’s diss on Romney. “Well Governor Romney there are also fewer horses in our military now than 1918.”

We would have had a liberal leaning CJ very likely since I don’t see Rehnquist’s health being any different. I don’t know if O’Connor steps down though under Gore though.

Why did Hillary bomb out all of the Japanese and European factories in the 1940s and then invent the oil crisis and then design the Vega?

Just fuck off with this stupid holier-than-thou protectionist nonsense.

My first husband had a Vega. It didn’t have quite as many problems as the Monza he bought next…

O’Connor most likely joined in that horrible Bush v. Gore decision precisely so that she could retire under a Republican president.

Unforgivable.

Had to turn up my music because Drumpf’s campaign manager is currently on the phone with CNN ranting nonstop about Mitt. Before him, they had Katrina Pierson on the phone ranting about Mitt.

Up next: CNN live coverage of Drumpf ranting about Mitt.

When did Idiocracy become real life?

I’m guessing here. When the President declared on live TV that the Soviet empire had just been declared illegal, and bombing would begin in five minutes.
