Video: Mitt Romney “Would Have Dropped to His Knees” for My Endorsement

Presidential
Politics • Views: 38,330

You knew Donald Trump would waste no time lashing out at Mitt Romney after Mitt’s speech today. And sure enough, the Trumpenstein went straight to the gutter, calling Romney “a failed candidate” and saying, “He was begging for my endorsement. I could have said ‘Mitt, drop to your knees.’ He would have dropped to his knees.”

Listen to the crowd react in the video above; they knew exactly what he was implying with that crass insult: oral sex. And they loved it. But of course, Trump will deny it if/when he’s called on it.

Wow. Just … wow.

Trump’s instincts are great for dealing with vulgar Queens construction contractors and mobbed-up union reps in Atlantic City. No doubt when coming into conflict, the instinct to start shouting “Fuck you! Just get down on your knees and blow me, you fuckin’ mook!” works great.

But is this really the kind of thing that we as a country think will work when trying to negotiate nuclear proliferation treaties?

Yeah, I know. The answer, to a bunch of knuckle-dragging, angry old white racists is “Goddam right! Show them moolie [bigoted word]s to stay in their place!” But I hope to God that everybody else in the reality-based world knows better…

Aside from the appeal to racism and white supremacists, I do not understand what anyone could possibly see in this man as a candidate for dog catcher, much less POTUS. I mean, I have heard or seen nothing that even comes close to an idea or plan on anything from him. There is nothing remotely Presidential or inspiring or reassuring about his braggadocio and constant bullying of opponents.

I wouldn’t cast a vote for any of the GOP field but I can at least see how someone would be drawn to someone like Rubio or Kasich. Cruz is a bit more borderline but I can at least conceptualize why someone might want him as their President. There is nothing about Trump, on any level or in any way, that could convince me to vote for him.

I simply do not understand the success he’s had.

In the previous thread a couple of posters wondered about what might or might not have happened if Al Gore had been sworn in as President. (We know damn well he was elected). The anti-terrorism policies of the Clinton administration would have continued, and I believe there is a good chance that 9/11 would not have happened (no guarantees, but Clinton/Gore were far more focused on terrorism). Instead the George W. Bush administration stocked the NSC with cold warriors who were oriented to the rivalry with China and the Russian Federation. Terrorism expert Richard Clarke (I think that was his name) was first marginalized and then shoved out the door. Again, I don’t know it the authorities would have connected the dots any better during a Gore administration, but at least he wouldn’t have blown off a “Bin Laden determined to strike in America” warning.

Just finished listening to Obama in Milwaukee and wow. I am crying.

I can’t express how much I am going to miss him. That he genuinely cares about Americans is so readily apparent and so diametrically opposite from every single Republican makes my head spin. The dishonesty of Republicans, especially Fox News, the largest microphone makes me wish Murdoch and every one of those assholes on his staff could be tried for sedition.

Such wasted opportunities for this country as it was led by a magnificent man who was thwarted at every goddamned step. That he accomplished what he did blows my mind and makes me yearn for what could have been.

I think 9/11 probably still happens, they were already in the US and at the time the intelligence agencies couldn’t speak to the FBI (if I’m remember my 9/11 Commission Report right). But the budget and debt are probably in better shape because there wouldn’t have been the Bush tax cut, and we wouldn’t have gone into Iraq. But it’s also entirely possible that Gore loses to McCain in 2004, or whoever the Democratic nominee in 2008 would have been would have lost to the GOP nominee.

Marshall at TPM hits it pretty well out of the park:

So many things are happening right now - mostly with the actors in question having no clear plan for what they’re doing - that it’s very hard to know where our politics will be a week from now let alone in six months. But there’s one thing we can see clearly and it’s worth noting: top Republican stakeholders are breaking a lot of china right now that will be very, very hard to unbreak. What seems most relevant to me is that almost all of this is being done with no clear sense of an end-game or even a clear plan.

I am really beginning to suspect that Trump has mobilized a new group of voters, the slack-jawed, conspiracy loving underclass who normally don’t vote because they think “everything is rigged anyway.” Trump is their man, their champion. These are the reality tv fans, the great masses who are always there in the fringes and dingy corners of middle America, but are normally ignored. They recoil reflexively from any hint of intellect or dignity, even the minimal fig leaves we see from the likes of Cruz and Rubio.

I’m on the edge of blaming reality TV for the current state of the GOP, whether it’s gay-hating duck hunters or pedophiles fucking their way to a quiverful for Jesus, horrible boorish behavior has been mainstreamed to the public, and they’re loving it enough to accept and even eat up everything the GOP is serving.

On November 21, 1922, the New York Times published its very first article about Adolf Hitler.

Seems relevant today for those who think Trump is just using Neo-Nazi, White Supremacist, KKK rhetoric as a ruse to fool a few voters.

He is credibly credited with being actuated by lofty, unselfish patriotism. He probably does not know himself just what he wants to accomplish. The keynote of his propaganda in speaking and writing is violent anti-Semitism. His followers are nicknamed the “Hakenkreuzler.” So violent are Hitler’s fulminations against the Jews that a number of prominent Jewish citizens are reported to have sought safe asylums in the Bavarian highlands, easily reached by fast motor cars, whence they could hurry their women and children when forewarned of an anti-Semitic St. Bartholomew’s night.

But several reliable, well-informed sources confirmed the idea that Hitler’s anti-Semitism was not so genuine or violent as it sounded, and that he was merely using anti-Semitic propaganda as a bait to catch masses of followers and keep them aroused, enthusiastic, and in line for the time when his organization is perfected and sufficiently powerful to be employed effectively for political purposes.

A sophisticated politician credited Hitler with peculiar political cleverness for laying emphasis and over-emphasis on anti-Semitism, saying: “You can’t expect the masses to understand or appreciate your finer real aims. You must feed the masses with cruder morsels and ideas like anti-Semitism. It would be politically all wrong to tell them the truth about where you really are leading them.”

I hadn’t posted anything on Facebook since the first of the year, but I broke the silence to post that story and another little story about how my recycling bin had been moved and flipped. Davey Bundy:
Bundy family member arrested in Utah on federal warrant

FBI agents have arrested another son of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy — this time in Utah.

David “Davey” Bundy was arrested just after 7 a.m. Thursday at the site of the house the Millard County contractor is building for his family just south of Delta, his wife told The Salt Lake Tribune.

Marylynn Bundy said she was alerted to the arrest by a worker who was blocked from getting to the house by law enforcement.

“I think they are just trying to get all the Bundy men locked up, so they can raid their homes,” Marylynn Bundy said.

The #BundyRanch operated as a criminal syndicate. Go figure.

Domestic terrorists who were welfare queens demanding the government bend to their whim or else they’d shoot up federal agents enforcing federal laws. Like making guys who let their herds roam around OUR land pay for the grazing rights just like every other rancher out there.

But the Bundys weren’t like other ranchers. They didn’t do anything that normal ranchers do. They simply let their herds roam and didn’t actually manage the herds.

No, unless it is coupled with a party switch by Collins. Then it might be worth thinking about.

The main reason is that this panders unnecessarily to the both-siderism crap that significantly enables the GOP shit we see every day.

On a more practical note, this will lose Democrats, gain no Republicans and have an unknown effect on the mushy middle. Who the hell needs that?

Regulations that limit heavy metal pollution from oil- and coal-fired power plants will continue to be enforced by the EPA — at least for now — thanks to Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.

On Thursday, Roberts unilaterally rejected a petition from 20 conservative-led states asking the court to temporarily halt the regulations. Halting the regulations would effectively allow power plants to emit unlimited mercury, arsenic, chromium, and other toxic heavy metals into the environment. […]

Last summer, the Supreme Court found that the EPA had not properly considered how much the rule would cost power plant operators, and ordered the EPA to do a proper cost-benefit analysis.

Before I retired, I met a lot of teachers, and I oftentimes wondered why some of them chose to work in the classroom because they didn’t give a damn about their students. They were as mean as snakes, and I couldn’t believe they were ever hired in the first place.

Because he’s not a politician and has no idea how to be one. I’ve yet to hear any detailed policy statements from him on anything. It’s always “Mexicans are going to pay for the wall because I said so” type of nonsense from him. And no one is challenging him for details.

The Age of Trump:

Donald Trump Gets AIDS In A New Movie, And That Has Studio Execs In A Panic

Audiences at screenings around the world, and some even in the United States, have been cheering and applauding a macabre scene in a new film by Sacha Baron Cohen in which “Donald Trump” accidentally contracts HIV.

[…]

At the film’s world premiere in London last week, the Daily Telegraph reported that the Trump moment was met with “loud cheering.” The Metro newspaper called it a “massive cheer.” A viewer at a different screening tweeted, “Went to watch Grimsby and the whole cinema clapped when Donald Trump got given AIDS in it.”

[…]

Back at Sony’s Hollywood headquarters, however, there has been much less enthusiasm about the scene in question. Three industry sources said that Sony had made its displeasure clear and pushed to remove the scene, but that Baron Cohen, in a rare deal for a producer-actor, has final authority over the film.

Studio executives are nervous about angering the famously vengeful and litigious Trump, compounded by the possibility of getting on the wrong side of the possible next president. Still traumatized by its run-in with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un in 2014, Sony decided its best option was to limit the damage. The film now includes a disclaimer indicating that Trump did not, in fact, participate in making the movie. “If you were told that they’re shying away from the movie because of the political implications, I can tell you that’s 100 percent true,” said a well-placed source.

[…]

Well, back in the day, women who didn’t want to be secretaries or nurses were kind of left with teacher as a job for an educated middle class woman. Then there were the men who were going to write the Great American Novel and didn’t or were going to make the major leagues and didn’t and felt really resentful that they had somehow ended up in a woman’s job.
I hope there are fewer these days, but I’d imagine the men finding themselves unaccountably ending up as teachers are joined by women who were going to write the Great American Novel (or whatever) and didn’t.

Straight GOPers can be this clueless. The non-straight GOPers don’t have that excuse.

Until very recently, growing up non-straight meant one thing above all else —- you had a secret that could very easily get you killed if it came out at the wrong place/time.

So you get reasonably good at threat assessment or you die.

Jenner knows exactly what the GOP so-cons want to do. She just doesn’t care because it won’t affect her personally.

It’s one of the advantages of being a blue state Republican. Jenner doesn’t have to worry about any of this because she lives in Los Angeles. And that’s probably why she’s clueless about it, no real understanding of what someone in, say, Springfield, Missouri would be facing.

I have no doubt that most in the GOP/TP have been aware of the racism in the party for a very long time. I think the reason they didn’t speak out against it before now is because they fear the backlash from the far right members in the party. These rank-and filers suffer from the same cowardice as their politicians who have also known about the rampant racism, homophobia, and misogyny that infests the party. I find it ironic and amusing that Ryan and others have “found” their courage only when Trump is threatening their chance to win the WH in November. As a POC, this says to me that they don’t give a damn if others are mistreated. They’re rank opportunists with a strong self-interest.

It’s a legitimate opinion, but I’m glad to defer to your govt. on this issue. Their opinion will be decisive.

He doesn’t have a right to be in the US aside from that granted by the govt though. And the govt is free to decide which criteria it uses. So no, it has nothing whatsoever to do with the 1st amendment. As Shiplord Kirel pointed out, a foreign neo-Nazi can easily be refused entry based on his speech alone, which would be fully legal in the US under the 1st amdt.

Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, the government does still has to be covered by the Constitution. Whether or not the person on the other end is a US citizen.

That is not in any way an extension of thinking, because all people in this country have a right to trial granted in the US Constitution. The thing is, when someone is on US soil, the government has to act with them the same as they would every citizen. Now, yes, they can be removed, but the government should have to deal with them the same as every citizen, meaning the Constitution still has to guide their actions.

My point is that, since he’s here, he has a right to free speech, not because the constitution says so, but because the onus is on the government to prove that his speech is bad.

Not quite. Example: there’s no way a citizen can violate the admission rules. Because there are no admission rules for already-citizens. So that’s one thing that non-citizens have to deal with that citizens don’t.

This times a thousand. The only real problem the GOP establishment has with Trump is that they think he will lose in the general election.

Drumpf supporter: “China managed to build a wall without a single Caterpillar. And it’s still standing.”

Me: “China built what we call the Great Wall over CENTURIES. It took several dynasties to see the whole thing built, an untold number of slaves to build it, and even then, it didn’t work.”

Drumpf supporter: “Well, we’ve gotten better and faster at construction now. Drumpf will be able to do it for a lot less than you think. Plus we can just slap tariffs on Mexico to pay for it.”

He didn’t threaten a specific person, like the student did. In Trump’s case, it was clear hyperbole.

Umm, perhaps you missed this.

A federal law enforcement source who was not authorized to discuss the case publicly said that when Elsayed was interviewed by a Secret Service agent he did not withdraw the statement.

I think this just might have something to do with them wanting to deport him.

Beside, as was mentioned up thread. Yes, you have a right to free speech. But exercising it can and does have consequences as the young Marine wanna be found out.

re: #232 majii

The racism is a feature, not a bug. They are aware of it because they cultivated it with dog whistling about welfare queens and affirmative action and Willie Horton, etc. They are speaking out now because Trump is breaking the rules and using a bullhorn instead of a dog whistle.

I think it could have gone either way. Many people then were thoroughly convinced to vote Republican because of the apparent failures of the Carter years.

Closed primaries is one of the very few things I agree with conservative partisans on. It makes no sense at all to have open primaries where people with no connection to the party at all get to cast meaningful votes on who should be the party’s candidate.

I’m reading this as “the DNC no longer supports Sanders by making sure no Dems run against him in Vermont if he doesn’t maintain his ties to the Democratic party,” not anything to do with the primaries.

For the record, as an independent, I prefer the open primaries. I got my ballot request form for the primary here in CA and plan to submit it to request the Democrat one. It’s a matter of personal preference to maintain the division between my registration and my voting preference.

There is an argument in political science that a person who votes in a primary is more likely to vote for that party’s nominee in the general election. That’s the idea behind letting independents vote in primaries. Here in California we’ve done away with partisan primaries for everything but president (and there’s yet another attempt to swing at that). Everyone is on the primary ballot regardless of party, top two go to the general election.

As to the rat fucking issue, for it to ever actually play a role, it would have to be Florida 2000 close.

It also helps people who would otherwise have to register to have an opinion on the local races (because of one party dominance) but would still like to be able to support the party they actually prefer in the presidential race.

I mean, I imagine that Backwoods Sleuth would love to be able to have a voice in the Democrat primary, for example, and yet because of wanting a voice in local politics, she can’t.

I like CA’s system a lot better.

(Republicans still throw their hissy fit and don’t allow independents to request a ballot for the Presidential race, but it mostly just makes them look like assholes.)

Our system in California is definitely an outlier (and a remnant of the progressive era) - completely nonpartisan elections at the local level, meaning no R’s or D’s for city council, mayor, or county wide positions - and now blanket primaries for everything from Assembly through the Governorship. The only traditional partisan primary we have anymore is the presidential primary. I’m probably going to ask for a Libertarian ballot in the primary, since I am guessing that Clinton will have secured the nomination by then.

I still think Bernie’s efforts in SC were a net negative to his final result there. Those were some ridiculous margins.

That’s because people like my “campaign kid” worked their asses off for Hillary. They not only worked hard, they worked smart—they knew who to call and what to say and they did it week in, week out.

Bernie had a lot of peeps on the ground (and, as I’ve mentioned before—they paid their “volunteers” if they worked more than 20 hours a week. So, depending on which story they were pushing, sometimes they called them paid staff and sometimes volunteers), but they really weren’t as effective or well-organized.

That why early on, when people were saying Hillary was taking everything for granted and expecting a coronation, I cried BULLSHIT. She carried one county in SC in 2008 and took all of them this time.

BTW, my campaign kid is gone—already working up in North Carolina. Sniff.

Depends

If candidates, then yes. You are either a registered (D) or you don’t run on the (D) ticket. Same goes for the (R)s. As for the Independents (I), if your position is so damn strong, then run on it instead of hanging off the coattails of an established party.

Bernie is an independent (Democratic Socialist) running under the Democratic name because he knows he has no other option. DWS should have booted him right from the start, but didn’t because he caucus’s with the (D)’s.

I do wish there were more stringent requirements to running for office on a party ticket. Remember, here in south by dog carolina, we ended up with Alvin Greene as a candidate—and that same year, had an even more ridiculous loser running for a House seat.

The only good thing Trump mania has brought to us this year is that a few of the worst loons, who have run as Democrats previously, are now vocal (obnoxious) Trump supporters, so I think we would be able to disqualify them from running as Dems in the future.

How much of a hard core activist do you have to be to fill out a party registration form and vote in a closed primary? That’s really pretty minimal.

I think your point is a valid criticism of caucuses, since those really are for those who have the time and energy to spare for a lengthy political exercise.

The popular vote margin in the general election helps create and sustain a narrative of support that can translate to political capital for an administration. People certain their vote doesn’t matter because they live in a solid red or blue state often forget that. It’s how much of our political dysfunction perpetuates itself in my opinion.

Shared this yesterday. According to the story there is at least snow on the ground on the rest of the course. Problem right now is just the ceremonial start in Anchorage. Though they are worried about what higher than normal temps will do over the course of the race.
Was much worse last year

Luckily, there’s snow on the ground. That wasn’t the case last year and organizers were forced to move the restart location to Fairbanks and reroute some 600 miles of the race because there wasn’t enough powder on the historic trail.

Romney believes Clinton will be president anyways, but knows that a Trump nomination will have pushed the republican party into farcical territory. Trump is pushing the party past the point-of-no-return line. Romney is just trying to save the party from itself. It’s an admirable attempt from a gop elder, and an important step away from absurdity and extremism seen in the party. Romney is attempting to bring civility back to the gop.
I just think the attempt is futile. The gop Trump voters (a.k.a -the teaparty’s true face) want two revenges: one for being lied to by their own party and the second for not stopping Obama as their leaders promised. It’s a split party with some being xenophobic haters feeling duped, and those remaining who still believe in the system.
