Trump Draws Embarrassingly Small Crowd to Richmond Coliseum

Is his support finally starting to collapse?
Politics • Views: 56,050

Do we dare hope that Trump’s popularity bubble has burst? The Richmond Coliseum was almost empty for his rally yesterday, very unusual for the Republican nominee — especially in a state like Virginia where he presumably has many followers.

His message remains the same, though: outright bigotry.

Most of the GOP is not supporting Trump so much as they are voting against Hillary. All that talk about how he’s such a “great” candidate because he’s “anti-establishment” is coming back to bite them in the ass as they realize that the people who support him are not so thrilled now to be supporting the establishment.

David Brooks:

“…Conservatives believe that politics is a limited activity. Culture, psychology and morality come first. What happens in the family, neighborhood, house of worship and the heart is more fundamental and important than what happens in a legislature.

Ryan’s argument inverts all this. It puts political positions first and character and morality second. Sure Trump’s a scoundrel, but he might agree with our tax proposal. Sure, he is a racist, but he might like our position on the defense budget. Policy agreement can paper over a moral chasm. Nobody calling themselves a conservative can agree to this hierarchy of values.”

I think this is the myth that conservatives would like to believe about themselves, but it’s pretty easy to find examples to the contrary.

Donald told the crowd in Richmond that turnout was low because they decided to have the rally at the last minute.
Even though tickets for the event were announced in the local media eight days earlier.

Nah. This is the perfect time. He really cannot be ditched now, short of an actual criminal indictment or abdication on his part. His core supporters will never leave him, and if the GOP tries to dump him, they’ll be slitting their own throats.

I LOVE the idea of a GOP convention where they are so sick of him that they just go through the motions of nominating him, golf clapping at his speech, and sitting out the fall campaign.

Important question: what type of vinegar(s) did you decide on to marinate the tomatoes?

I suspect Trump has no real idea what’s coming. Much of his recent income has been from licensing his name to products/businesses; he even claims that his “brand” is worth 3 billion dollars. I think his campaign was initially another scheme to push his brand, until his ego became too invested. As the campaign continues and more people finally start paying attention, the Clinton campaign’s ads will destroy much of the illusion that Trump is a successful businessman, damaging his brand far more than he imagines.

Given that bookings at Trump hotels are down significantly while other hotels are doing well, I think the deterioration of his brand has already started and will only accelerate. I wouldn’t be terribly surprised to see yet another bankruptcy for Trump after he (hopefully) loses the election.

Hope the stray cats in my neighborhood stay away. One of them was on my garage roof a couple days ago trying to get at a feeder that a bird couple turned into a nesting box.

My mom used to put a little tarragon vinegar in her potato salad but I never really experimented cooking with just the herb until fairly recently. I followed the recipe for a Bearnaise sauce, really liked it and realized it was the tarragon in it I really liked. I have used it with shrimp and scallops and am thinking about trying it with chicken.

Pat Buchanan steps up to the plate to defend Trump.

“Never retreat. Never explain. Get it done and let them howl.”

Donald Trump has internalized the maxim Benjamin Jowett gave to his students at Balliol who would soon be running the empire.

To show how it should be done, Pat digs up a golden turd from the distant past of conservatism.

To see how far the party has come, consider:

After he had locked up his nomination, Barry Goldwater rose on the floor of the Senate in June of 1964 and voted “No” on the Civil Rights Act. The senator believed that the federal government was usurping the power of the states. He could not countenance this, no matter how noble the cause.

Ban the Muslims! Kick out the Mexicans! Attack non-white, non-male, and non-Christian judges for being biased against the white man. Pat’s having hot sweet dreams about Trump.

I’m sure we’ll soon see ads showing Trump declaring that the proceeds from various projects will go to charity, followed by evidence that no charitable donations were made and that Trump pocketed the money. Seems to be a pattern with him.

If The Conald is as rich as he claims, why would that be necessary? Why would be participate in schemes such as Trump U, given that he only got a reported 5 million dollars from that fraud? Why would he do a reality show? Why is his “self-funding” loans to the campaign? Why won’t he release his tax returns? Why the string of small failed enterprises such as Trump steaks, vodka, Trump magazine, etc.?

His only response to such attacks would be to demonstrate that he is in fact as wealthy and successful as he claims. A response that I suspect he can’t make.

Sovereign Citizen style billboards appear across the United Kingdom. The billboards have a confusing message and direct people to learn more about “legal name fraud.”

The UK’s Advertising Standards Agency (charged with ferreting out false claims or obscene advertising) says they might be confusing but not misleading. A solicitor’s office weighed in to the BBC arguing the adverts are in fact dangerous, as a person who follows the Website’s advice could wind up in serious trouble in civil or criminal court.

The BBC is attempting to track down who is behind the billboard; the advertising company will release no information, citing privacy concerns.

I used to make Jambalaya and I was always trying to make it like a local restaurant made it. I never quite got it right. Then one day I saw a recipe that used tarragon and boom the taste was just like the restaurant I was trying to copy. It made all the difference. Also, I didn’t use tomato much…more chili powder and chicken broth along with the Cajun Holy Trinity…some tasty hungarian paprika, garlic, bay and thyme. With tarragon!

Mmm. You know, I should see if I can make it again. Problem is I gave up on sausage in some dietary changes. Maybe just leave out the sausage or try to see if I can find a decent turkey smoked spicy sausage.

trump just shows what a lazy campaigner he is. Pull up the plane to an airport, get out, leave.

Most airports are not near city centers.

Now if he were traveling by Greyhound…

He’s probably never been on one. Nor anywhere near a station.

From the VOA article:

Clinton made history this week as the first woman to become the presumptive nominee of a major political party. President Barack Obama endorsed her in a video put out by the Clinton campaign, saying she has “the courage, the compassion to get the job done.”

Vice President Joe Biden and progressive Senator Elizabeth Warren also signed onto Clinton’s “I’m with her” campaign.

The endorsements came after Obama held a one-hour Oval Office meeting with Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

The independent socialist, who caucuses with Senate Democrats, stopped short of conceding the nomination to Clinton. He told reporters of plans to meet with Clinton in the near future and called for the party to come together to face Trump.

“The American people will not vote for or tolerate a candidate who insults Mexicans and Latinos, who insults Muslims, who insults African-Americans and women,” Sanders told reporters at the White House. “I will do everything in my power, and I will work as hard as I can, to make sure that Donald Trump does not become president of the United States.”

Low energy. Sad!

We see the same thing with him calling into TV shows rather than appearing in person. I don’t think he’s capable of dealing with the grind of a presidential campaign. In fact, there is evidence that the minimal campaigning he’s done is already taking a toll, and the real campaign is just starting.

Also, I don’t think the Conald has a clue about the demands on a president and the mental/physical toll of the job. And unlike a business, the head of the government can’t just delegate away all the responsibilities, although we’ve already seen hints that Trump thinks he can do so.

In my mind, the only real question is which will fail first: his health or his hair?

The Greyhound station in Las Vegas can’t be more than 3 miles from a Trump property. It’s on the downtown end of the Strip’s blvd. Same block as The Plaza Hotel.

Cenk used to be a Republican. He bailed from the party when it went off the rails, and like many new converts in religion, seems to have become zealous.

I’ve liked following his shows, but even as a Sanders supporter myself I thought he was quite biased in his coverage of Clinton (repeating some of the smears he’d learned as a Republican, for example).

His YouTube channel has a huge following however. Perhaps TYT will get on board; Trump is too dangerous.

Didn’t know he used to be a Republican. That quite honestly explains a lot. Nothing wrong with being a former Republican but yes converts do tend to get zealous in politics as in religion.

I think the death of the Citizens Party came about in part because of Jackson’s run for president. A lot of members of The Citizens Party wanted to support him rather than run their own candidate. The Party ran a woman (Sonja Johnston) and the party split up before the next presidential contest.

re: #78 ObserverArt

Yum, Jambalaya with tarragon——-I’m glad I asked for recipe ideas! I also avoid sausage and bacon but have found that using a couple drops of liquid smoke or some smoked paprika gives me that smokiness I crave. I also have found that I can season the extra lean ground turkey in a variety of flavors———apple breakfast sausage, italian sausage, thai flavor, imitation gyro, and with Mexican seasonings for chili. I am a little wary of the additives to commercial sausages but there are probably some good one out there.

The super lean ground turkey tends to get rubbery, but I have found that if I grind in a blender one smallish onion along with an egg and then combine with the ground turkey ( 1 lb) thoroughly, I have a base for many possible flavors and it does not get that rubbery texture. I sometimes add a few bread crumbs. I just make patties or crumble the mixtures. No casings for this lazy girl!

Love the cat. Reminds me of the mail man being followed by a neighbor’s cat today.

Which reminds me of a cat I met on a golf course on the Mississippi Gulf coast. We were coming off the sixth green and here’s this very imperious-looking orange beastie sitting in our golf cart. “Yours?” I asked a man watching from his deck overlooking the course. “Yeah,” he said. “He won’t bother you, just wants a ride to the next tee, then he’ll come back.” Sure enough, the cat settled in as we drove to the seventh tee, maybe a hundred yards away, then hopped out of the cart, gave us a look as if to say “Very decent of you,” and headed back the other way, probably to hitch his next ride.

Johns also noted the Mariners listed Griffey as a center fielder, while mentioning there was likely a reason he was taken in the 24th round.

Griffey’s father, of course, wore No. 24 with the Mariners from 1989 to 1999 before they traded him to the Cincinnati Reds.

[…]

This is likely just a tip-of-the-cap selection to the greatest player in Mariners history.

[…]

Because the MLB draft is so long—there are 40 rounds with more than 1,000 players selected—teams have the luxury of honoring former players and legends of the sport by drafting their children. It’s also a nice moment for the new generation to have their names called as draftees.

In 1986, I toured the plant Mr. w worked in when he was in and just out of high school. His brother-in-law took us. When the bro-in-law went back to the plant, the guys asked him, ‘Who was that kid?’ He told them, ‘You used to work with him.’ They couldn’t believe this young guy about to set off on a cross-country bike tour was their age. Mr. w left the steel mills for the Navy and saved his life. The bro-in-law (who was younger) died 5 years ago.

The Rude Pundit:

Tales of Trump: “My Father Turned Him Down for a Loan”

From rude reader Mary S. over on the Facebook, we get another of the growing red tide of tales about how Donald Trump is a shitty businessman, whether he’s dicking over small business owners or banks. This story is purely anecdotal, but it certainly fits into the pattern we’ve been hearing about for a long damn time about Trump.

“My father actually turned Donald Trump down for a loan. Really. He told him to his face that Trump Enterprises didn’t meet the bank’s standards for creditworthiness. My father also broke a longstanding personal rule about never speaking ill of anyone he’s done business with, for Trump. He told my mother that Donald Trump had ‘the WORST business ethics of any businessman I’ve ever encountered in my entire professional career.’ That was saying something.

Yeah, I came across that article when I looked at the Dutch woman being arrested for adultery in Qatar when she reported a rape. I have a personal interest in this and I *really* want to know who is putting up the thousands of pounds for these billboards. Alternately, here’s yet another American export the mother country could do without.

I do like what this guy has to say (this could be said for all the sovereign citizen nutcases, but this is very pithy):

Regardless of who funded it, the campaign has won attention for a hitherto fringe theory. David Allen Green, the legal commentator and solicitor at Preiskel & Co LLP who blogs as Jack of Kent, says it is “complete tosh” and warns people against relying on it in court.

He adds: “It is nothing about law, and it is not harmless. Taking this daftness seriously can be legally dangerous. If people try to use such things to avoid their legal obligations they can end up with county court judgments or even criminal convictions. You may as well walk into court with a t-shirt saying ‘I am an idiot’.”

When my ex-wife and I had an Irish duo that performed around Florida and Georgia in the Nineties (and added a couple people later), we were called Irish Coffee. Our tag was “Irish Coffee has all four food groups: caffeine, alcohol, sugar, and fat.”

Putting upright someone who has just fainted is what most people want to do, but it is usually not the right thing to do, as it further diminishes blood supply to the brain.

I’ve always heard it explained it is mother nature telling you to lie down…and then you do. ..whether you wanted to or not.

The Trump campaign is ready to go!
They have the nomination and plenty of money.
The establishment and the all-important radio-industrial complex are on board.
The country club set is holding its nose and going along, while the Tea Party is doing so with delirious enthusiasm.
They have plenty of media exposure, much of it free, and foreign support from Russia and North Korea.

All they need now is a viable candidate.

I am sorry to hear that, but it gives me the opening to say, ‘how ‘bout a nicer-looking kitteh for an avatar?’ That one gives me the creeps, as I think it’s spozed to.

Oh, and your Twitter account is not connected to your LGF account, which would let more tweeting lizards find you.

Sounds delish! Since it sounds like you love to use herbs, I’ve got to ask you, do you ever use tarragon? I have been swapping it our for some other herbs just for variety and have really enjoyed it.

If anyone out there has a dish that’s great with tarragon, I’m all ears.

Evening Lizards.

KerFuFFler, do you you have a clay pot cooker? If so, give this dish a try.

Chicken with Broccoli

2 tablespoons flour
1 & 1/2 teaspoons salt (or substitute)
Dash of pepper
1/2 teaspoon tarragon
1 3 pound frying chicken (or precut pieces of your choice), cut into serving pieces
2 tablespoons olive oil (used for frying chicken, so use more or less as you prefer)
Juice of 1/2 lemon
1/2 pint sour cream
2 oz sharp cheddar cheese
1 pound broccoli, washed, separated and stalks removed

Presoak pot, top and bottom, in water for 15 min.
Combine flour, pepper, salt and tarragon in paper bag, add chicken parts and shake. Put aside any remaining flour mixture.
In a large frying pan, quickly brown chicken in olive oil until golden.
Place browned chicken in in presoaked pot.
Squeeze juice of 1/2 a lemon over chicken.
In a medium bowl, mix drippings from frying pan, sour cream and rest of flour mix togather and por over chicken (this should be thick.)
Grate cheddar cheese over top.
Place covered pot in COLD oven.
Set temp to 450 degrees(f)
Cook for 25 min.
Remove pot from oven and add broccoli. Put covered pot back in oven for an additional 10 min.
Siphon off excess fat and serve.

Cooks caveat! I prefer to double the shake mix as I find it tends to be a bit on the shy side after you coat the chicken. Your results may very.

Be real interesting if there was a shift. Trump does seem to be alienating married suburban white woman, a demographic that favored Romney but is looking more favorable to Clinton this time. The thing about Trump is that he really doesn’t take away parts from the Dem coalition. Lot of talk about blue collar voters crossing over for him but a lot of them are Republicans anyhow. I highly doubt that blue collar whites that went for Obama will go for Trump.
