I pointed out when talking about Brexit the other day but what Stein and some of the lefties justifying the vote missed was that parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland have had just as much if not more economic troubles than England have and did not resort to scapegoating immigrants in the EU.

I was fucking astonished when I saw college age demonstrators carrying Soviet flags and red revolution banners on the streets in Philly yesterday and acting like American voters would think that was a great thing.

Sanders’ version of socialism had some traction in the middle of the Great Depression. A true red banner revolution was actually warned about on the floor of Congress and it was not hyperbole.

That shit is not going to happen today, and you are not going to get American voters to sign on to an overt socialist agenda or a POTUS who believes in it.

How long are we supposed to be magnanimous? How long do we get shit on by some of these people? They are on the news happily speaking about not voting for Hillary because of this or that (feeding the GOP narrative).

Until November, I suspect. It’s not very much fun.

I’m watching it and just reveling in it. I could focus on bitterness but why? That doesn’t net anything except make me feel bad. The majority of the votes are going for HRC. The crowd is cheering. It’s great.

There was a woman who cast her state’s delegates for HRC who was born before women could vote - and I hope she lives to see her win the election. That’s amazing. It’s meaningful.

I’m here for it.

Oh? On that one, I think it’s a nontroversy after I looked at the whole context and seeing it was in the Gorby years and it was in Burlington’s sister city. A weird honeymoon but not something I would judge but I do think it’s something hte RNC and the their allied PACs would pounce on.

Right, there’s a lot on him that I bet the RNC was just hoping they could use against him. I Wasn’t even aware of the Pro-Iranian thing though. Was a litle about the weird writings in the 70’s and on the USSR honeymoon.

Yeah, I have seen other stuff and not all of it can be definitely established this long afterwards…but since when did political commercial makers give a shit about definitive proof you could enter in court?
slate.com

In the 1970s, Sanders chaired the left-libertarian Liberty Union Party and competed in two Senate campaigns and two gubernatorial campaigns under its banner. “Liberty Union calls for a reduction of the U.S. military,” said the party’s statement of principles. That’s a wholly reasonable position, but it continued, “A return to the system of local citizen militias and Coast Guard would provide our nation with ample protection and also protect us from the imperialist impulses of our leaders.” That sounds a lot like getting rid of America’s standing Army.

There’s more. In 1980, Sanders served as an elector for the Socialist Workers Party, which was founded on the principles of Leon Trotsky. According to the New York Times, that party called for abolishing the military budget. It also called for “solidarity” with the revolutionary regimes in Iran, Nicaragua, Grenada, and Cuba; this was in the middle of the Iranian hostage crisis.

If Sanders ever truly supported disbanding the Army and defunding the Defense Department, he abandoned these positions when he got into national politics. Nevertheless, Republicans will be able to run ads saying that Sanders was part of a communist political party that called for eliminating the military budget, and fact-checkers will not be able to contradict them.

Right, in full context, I don’t care at all that he did that. I do think it would be something that a RNC opps researcher would have a field day with. I just imagine voice over of Reagan talking about the “Evil Empire” and another voice saying “Did you know Bernie Sanders honeymooned in the USSR?” I don’t have a problem with it Sergey. I just think it’s something that could easily be exploited. I mean we saw how Obama saying that wealth needs to be shared was twisted into him promoting hte Communist manifesto by McCain.

It was still the cold war and it never looks good on any political resume to go take a honeymoon (of all things) over in the territory of the geopolitical enemy of your country for the past 50 years.

You pair that up with the actual fact that he was an elector for a Marxist political group in 1980 and the questions start to…ahem…arise.

It is absolutely the sort of thing that gets people denied in security clearance checks and it is one hell of a leap to ask voters to cast all that aside and put him in charge of a military that he is on the record for wanting to disband completely.

Since this has come up, the story of Trump and Putin is getting legs as well, and his refusal to release his taxes may well stem from Russian ties he does not want to admit to.

That can still be enough to keep you from ever being allowed into certain jobs in the government or the military for the rest of your life. Choices you make as an adult, even as a young and inexperienced adult, can last forever.

Blew his security clearance long before that. First I heard of him was at a benefit concert to get him out of jail—he ran an antiwar coffee house off Ft. Knox before it was cool.

Can’t watch the roll call vote but honestly I think it’s great theatrics and also a total thumb in the eye of the GOP Convention. Remember, many delegates wanted a roll call and were denied that and the powers that be strong armed the whole thing and did shove Trump down their throats. On our side you have both candidates getting a fair call and getting their delegates counted, not just changed over for them. Yes I know that GOP rules said they were “bound” to vote for Trump but again, they looked shitty that whole time.

What a bunch of pedantic bullshit. You know that she made a good speech if they’re whining that she didn’t specifically say something. She was trying to make the point that African-Americans have gone from being forced as slaves to build the home for the First Family to now residing in it. That’s all she meant. And honestly, I think that shows how far our country has come. Too bad the fucking simpletons at Fox can’t appreciate progress.

Putin wasn’t even head of the KGB. He was a KGB op in East Germany. What alot of people don’t get is a lot of people joined the Communist Party in the Eastern Bloc because it really was the only way of advancing themselves.

And, having spent time in the West, he saw that the Soviet approach of hermetically sealing the people off from information about the outside world (and the more unsavory aspects of their own system) would not work over the long run. He takes an approach of allowing limited access but still keeping tight controls on the media and on political activities.

You really do need to hear voices from people who aren’t completely tribal, y’know. Parties that project a united image tend to benefit more from their conventions. You really do need to hear voices from people who aren’t completely tribal, y’know. Parties that project a united image tend to benefit more from their conventions. Trump achieved this for the Republicans. You were sure his convention was a fiasco, only to find that he took the lead in the polls. Bernie’s boo-birds and entire campaign have been unhelpful to the Democratic party.

Nobody wanted to go to that damn convention. They voiced their boos loudly by staying the hell away.

I do. I also recognize that the last time the party had an infestation from the hard left, it lost four of the next five Presidential elections, all by landslides.

I seem to have missed this “Infestation from the hard left”. Has nationalizing the means of production or an equivalent been proposed by Sanders et al.?

Despite what Fox News propaganda says, there is no hard left in the US that is remotely comparable in extremism + power combined to the hard right in charge of the Republican party.

The polling results that 90% of the Sanders supporters plan to vote for Clinton in November still stand, as far as I know. So there are in fact plenty of votes to be had from the left.

That “90%” number is only when a forced choice is presented and third party candidates excluded. When those constraints are removed, that number nosedives.

There is also extensive experience that shows the futility of trying to peel away Republican voters by going centrist. Trump might actually make that strategy viable this time around, but its a nice to have, not a gotta have. The gotta have is turning out the Obama coalition.

The Democrats changed their fortunes in 1992 and ended their string of ugly losses by turning to a centrist governor from the South who peeled off Republican voters (and had a lot of help from Ross Perot, who peeled off even more). He’s hoping to be First Dude this November.

Indeed. The Republican response to this has been to blast off to the rightmost edge of the space-time continuum at Warp Factor 9. Today’s Republicans can’t be peeled off by anyone to the left of Attila the Hun.

A further significant move to the “center” by Democrats at this time will make them into Republicans of the past, and who needs that?

“Music decided to test his luck by sinking millions of dollars of lottery winnings into the purchase and sale of crystal meth,” U.S. Attorney Ed Tarver said in a Justice Department statement. “As a result of his unsound investment strategy, Music now faces decades in a federal prison.”

lawhawk  Jul 26, 2016 • 4:11:24pm

Given how Trump’s business is not public, there’s very little information that we can glean about who owes what to whom, and where/how he does business.

News reports of business dealings is one hint.

Then there’s the reports (credible and multiple) that US banks wont lend to him, which suggests he’s got to rely on foreign banks for his business. That means banks from Deutsche Bank to other more obscure ones.

That’s a situation no nominee for POTUS has ever been in before. There’s no way to know who has what kind of leverage on Trump. He’s not saying.

Jill Stein is still stinging from the fact that no one considers her a serious candidate. Hence, HRC = the first female major party nominee for the President of the US.

Jill Stein, who isn’t even on the ballot in all states.

But she’s somehow going to be the savior? Really?

Which brings up a question. What will the Sanders people that want to vote for Stein think when they go to vote for her and she is’t even on their states ballot?

More crying. More moaning. More tantrums.

There’s also the point that feral capitalism does tend to reward narcissistic and sociopathic personality disorders, provided those with the disorders content themselves with legal forms of predation on others.

freetoken  Jul 26, 2016 • 4:21:14pm

The PP case today is of course not being covered so well in many outlets, with a great deal of misleading headlines.

The Chicago Tribune runs a feed title “Anti-abortion duo behind Planned Parenthood videos cleared”, which is different than the current article headline.

The feed line is of course misleading, as the reason the prosecutor told the judge not to go forward with the case had nothing to do with the guilt or innocence of Daleiden but rather that the case was brought improperly because the grand jury exceeded its authority.

But this legal distinction will not matter to the polemicists.

I know you’re being sarcastic, but I suspect you’ve found from your conversations on social media and face to face that a lot of people simply don’t know this recent history. Witness the debates over the 1994 crime bill and “don’t ask, don’t tell,” for instance. Sanders supporters, especially the young ones, really do seem to think that the Democrats have always had it easy. They also don’t seem to know that below the Presidential level, the Democrats are in their worst position since the 1920s.

upon thinking on this stuff and the outrage and disdain that people feel this passionate about their politics and overall, I’m okay with most of it. Do I wish more of the niceties had been observed…. yes…

could Sanders have behaved better… yes… his delegates… yes
could I have wished that the Hilary folks just could have let it slide… yes, can I understand why they didn’t. Hell yes.

It’s the small stuff that is telling… Sanders says to make her the nominee by acclimation but he wants his delegate count noted into the record. Does that seem small. Yes it does. Does it change any fucking thing? No it doesn’t, but it just seems small. Especially so in the light of the moment where a woman heads a major party ticket in forever of this nation. He still seemed intent on winning the small coups instead of acknowledging that the race was over.

If anything, I think it speaks to the nature of Clinton’s character, the fact that she let him have his way on all of this small-small shit in order to rein him in and get the band together for the road trip gives me a fair amount of faith that if we manage to flip the house and/or the Senate for her, we may actually get some shit done in this country. Because I have the firm belief that once her ass is in the chair, she has no reason at all to play nice with those that have slung stones and arrows from afar, but she’ll be nice anyway.

re: #454 piratedan

upon thinking on this stuff and the outrage and disdain that people feel this passionate about their politics and overall, I’m okay with most of it.

Pretty much. I want a President who doesn’t spend her time mired in little bullshit details, who can keep focused on the goal.

So Clinton and Kane have come out against TPP unequivocally:

“We need a new approach to trade,” he [John Podesta] said. “We’re not about renegotiation. We’re not kind of interested in that. We’re interested in a new approach.”

“They’re against it before the election and against it after the election,” [Podesta] said at a lunch sponsored by The Wall Street Journal. He said he met with House Democrats, who overwhelmingly oppose the pact, on Monday and reiterated that position. “So they know, they well know what our position is.”

I think Clinton will follow through on this, as her campaign hasn’t left much wiggle room.

It’s hard to say. I think to be completely honest in 2008 anyhow, I really genuinely liked Obama but I felt the Clintons had their team but Klys has made a great point that Clinton has gotten wehre she has on her own merits and it was sexist of me to simply judge her because of her husband. I also to be truthful did not like how Clinton ran in 2008 too. I think in the end, I was probably Clintoned out and didn’t want to give her a chance on her own merits.

I can’ t speak for Propane Jane or any other black person except myself. I didn’t vote for Sen. Sanders because his message didn’t resonate with me. I like his idea of holding the Big Banks responsible for their actions, but at the same time, I have other concerns, too, like a politician working to insure that everyone who wants to vote can vote; dealing with climate change; tackling income inequality; equal pay for women; a responsible foreign policy position that avoids stupid wars, and protecting women’s access to any healthcare service they choose to access. This isn’t the end of my list, but these are my top concerns.

I think that’s what disturbed me the most about the Treyvon death especially. I mean even if you feel Zimmerman was defending himself, a mother still lost her child. What gets me though is they shout blue lives matter but they are the same people who cheered the Bundy Ranch assholes who actually did pull weapons on the police. They don’t care about the cops. They care about shaming African-Americans.

I’m waiting for the inevitable vultures to attack these women for their losses at the hands of law enforcement or people who thought they were cops and could kill with impunity.

What these right wingers consistently ignore is that law enforcement is not the judge/jury/executioner. When cops get to play comic book Judges and shoot first/often/and then never even get charged with a crime, even when the videos show no criminal wrongdoing by the victim, let alone indictments or convictions, there’s something seriously wrong with the criminal justice system and law enforcement that has to be addressed.

That’s a breakdown of the constitutional protections and must be addressed.

And when cops kill black people at a disproporationate clip, it’s not just black folks not following directions. We have all seen far too many videos showing blacks doing exactly what cops said, and got shot anyways. Or blacks doing nothing wrong. Or driving. Or walking. Or carrying toy guns in an open carry state. Or walking with a bb gun in an open carry state.

Or just walking home from a convenience store with a bag of candy.

This is what the black community faces on a daily basis.

And the GOP simply doesn’t care.

They trot out Blue Lives Matter - as if that is a magic retort.

If anything it is an admission that Black Lives Matter actually hits home, because Blue Lives Matter isn’t saying that all lives don’t matter, just that we need to take the concerns of cops seriously. Guess what, we need to take black lives seriously too, and need to correct serious injustices. The GOP doesn’t care about any of that.

I’m glad to hear your husband is OK. As to having to buy a new car because the one he was in is probably totaled, I have a story to share. A couple months ago, I bought my daughter a new Nissan with all the bells and whistles she wanted. Long story short, she had it one week before totaling it. We’ve been dealing with the insurance companies since then. Esurance has paid its part of the claim, and we’re waiting on the gap insurance company to do its part. Talking about heartbroken. I was. New car, totaled, dealing with insurance companies, etc. The process of selecting a new car begins again after the gap insurance payment to Nissan is done. I was very angry when my daughter called and told me about he car, but I was most grateful that she and her fiance were OK. Kids, grown kids can be a headache sometimes.
