Trump’s Praising Wikileaks Today, but in 2010 He Called for Them to Be Executed

Just one more 180 degree reversal from Pumpkin Pinochet
Politics • Views: 41,552

Early this morning, Donald Trump hauled his carcass out of his 2400-thread count Egyptian cotton sheets and while sitting on his solid gold toilet in the Trump Tower penthouse tweeted some ringing praise for Julian Assange and Wikileaks, his new best buddies.

But in 2010, when Wikileaks was publishing the documents stolen by Pfc. Bradley Manning (now Chelsea Manning), Trump was singing a very different tune. He said “there should be like death penalty or something.”

“I think it’s disgraceful, I think there should be like death penalty or something,” Trump said during the quick exchange uncovered online by CNN’s KFile.

Makes sense. My guess is that Trump will praise a lot of people before he has them executed.

The difference of course is that President Obama confronted his own prejudice and changed his opinion about marriage after a careful review of facts and evidence. Donald changes his “opinions” based on who flattered him recently.

Either he has a very short term memory and forgot what his position was on Wikileaks and Assange, or he’s decided that Wikileaks is okay because he benefited from their actions personally.

Both options are awful for the rest of the nation and bodes poorly for the future of the nation.

I’m amazed that CNN actually did the due diligence of looking at Trump’s past statements on Wikileaks. Most media has basically ceded their obligations and treated Trump like he had the divine right of kings with regards to what is ‘truth’ and ‘news.

re: #4 lawhawk

It’s very simple, Trump’s position will always be whatever Trump thinks benefits him most.

Then: the position played well with the rubes so he went with it

Now: Wikileaks actions benefited him so now he loves them.

This is the problem the press faces above all else. If they do their due diligence and report accurately Trump will go after them and unleash his flying monkeys. If they bend over he will sing their praises.

Three Republican senators have introduced a bill that would force the president to move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem.

The bill introduced Tuesday by Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida, Dean Heller of Nevada and Ted Cruz of Texas would remove the presidential waiver from the 1995 law passed by Congress recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and mandating the move from Tel Aviv.

Successive presidents have exercised the waiver every six months, most recently President Barack Obama in December. They cite national security reasons over concerns that a move would lead to Islamist and Arab nationalist attacks on Americans and their allies in the region.

The bill would slash in half the funds that Congress disburses to the State Department for building, securing and maintaining embassies until the embassy opens in Jerusalem.

I’m really starting to put some credence in the idea that Trump may be suffering from Alzheimer’s. He has many of the classic symptoms, there’s a history of it in his family, and he’s at the age where it would start to become obvious.

If you follow Propane Jane, she’s been providing evidence of Trump’s various pathologies and mental health evaluations. her opinion (based on being a clinical mental health professional) is that he has early onset Alzheimers which explains why one of his kids or Jared has to be in the room with him at all times, he has short term memory loss, and this is compounded by narcissistic personality disorder. PJ says that if he presented at her clinic she would order him hospitalized for possibility of endangering himself and others.

You’d think… except that knowing everything we know about the Trump cabal, they’ll try to avoid any admission that Donny’s suffering from Alzheimers and has been for years - especially during the campaign when he’d lie and forget what he said minutes ago.

His followers wouldn’t care (and would promptly state with glee that a guy with Alzheimers beat Clinton).

While you’d also think that the docs at Walter Reed would be the ones caring for him, I’m not sure that is a requirement and the president could find his own personal docs to bury any evidence that he’s shot suffering from a debilitating illness.

It would take an admission that he’s suffering from mental illness or Alzheimers for the 25th (Clause 4) to kick in - pushing Pence to the forefront as acting POTUS.

Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.

It all depends on who gets appointed Physician to the President. Typically it is a doctor in the military (those in private practice don’t like the idea of having to shut down their practice for 4-8 years). The last time a non-military doctor held the position was during the first Bush Administration - and he was assisted by an Army doctor in running the White House Medical Office.

The bill would slash in half the funds that Congress disburses to the State Department for building, securing and maintaining embassies until the embassy opens in Jerusalem.

So, say something happens to the embassy in Tel Aviv because the budget was cut, like a bombing or other terrorist attack, who thinks the GOP would investigate it with the verve they went after Hillary and Obama regarding Benghazi?

I think I know that answer.

Just a little snow (8 inches) today.

[Embedded content]

Snowing like mad here. I started out to drive my wife to the doctor for her appointment, got as far as the railroad (four blocks) over snow-covered roads, said “nope, a routine doctor visit is not worth sixty miles one way for this” (and it’s supposed to snow all day). Came home, called the doc, cancelled the appointment. Doc was understanding about our situation out here in the hinterlands.

Since I still had to shovel the dirt back into my cyclone cellar after the flood from the plumbing break during our trip to California to get the inner door closed, I borrowed a coal shovel from my neighbour to do it. (The basement is still a bit muddy, but the flood is gone now.)

Managed to get the door shovelled out so I could close it. After paying $1,800 to get our plumbing repaired last week, braving the cold to secure that door didn’t seem like such a bad thing to me.

Tonight’s low: -4F. Tomorrow night’s low: -14. Night after: -8. I guess winter is here.

Following a more than hour-long meeting with Tillerson Wednesday, Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., the ranking Democrat of the Foreign Relations committee, told reporters the two had a “very candid” discussion” that touched on subjects including Russia and climate change.

“Obviously he did business with Russia and was able to get things done there,” Cardin said. “That’s going to get a great deal of attention during the confirmation process. Russia is not a friend of the United States.”

In a much anticipated meeting, Tillerson is also expected to sit down later Wednesday with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. Along with Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., McCain has raised questions around Tillerson’s relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Asked Wednesday whether he could support Tillerson’s nomination, McCain told reporters, “Sure. There’s also a realistic scenario that pigs fly.”

Wait.

My company just signed us all up for our usual employer insurance. Rates and coverage for 2017 are locked. I know every other company on the planet with employer-provided health insurance has done the same.

So, repealing Obamacare right now has no value whatsoever in 2017 for those already insured. This is done. Our coverage offerings, deductibles, etc are set for 12 months.

It will give NO BENEFIT to us to repeal it right now. It simply means people who already rely on the ACA for coverage, some of the sickest of us, will suffer for absolutely no good reason. Trying to kill the ACA at the beginning of this administration benefits absolutely no one. Including insurance companies. They will LOSE business without being able to reduce services for their pool of insured. The contracts for 2017 are signed.

This is pure political theater with no real benefit to Americans, no matter where we sit on the socioeconomic spectrum. None.

I will be very intrigued to know how many Trump voters and/or Republican voters will lose ACA coverage. The older voters have Medicare. I’m not sure repealing ACA will have much impact on Trump voters, though some will get hit…Kentucky comes to mind. It’s when Paul Ryan starts going after Medicare that the shit will hit the fan on the “but we trusted you, Donald!” side.

I can’t believe they’re stupid enough to cause this level of chaos this early. I thought there’s no way they’d repeal it without an alternative plan. Nope, they’re that stupid.

This country is going to tear itself apart and it needs to. Too many people were asleep while the Republicans crept into power and now they get to wake up to a tarantula on their face.

I have all the faith in the world that the Republicans will overreach so badly that they will go down like a demon under Kali’s feet.

Iran-Contra?

We’re not talking about corruption here. Yes, they were corrupt, but in this particular conversation, that’s not the point.

We’re talking basic levels of competence here. Reagan’s staff was comprised of government professionals who had worked in other administrations, come up through the ranks. They had a basic understanding of day-to-day operations of both the White House and they had respect for the institutions that helped the government run.

Trump’s ‘staff?’ Littered with political payback appointments, power freaks, conspriacy nuts and political nihilists like Bannon. Trump himself will not take intelligence briefings.

To them, the governmental apparatus is the enemy.

If Trump is manifesting Alzheimer’s, those numbskulls are going to have their hands so full that they’re going to fail at both day-to-day operations and covering up the boss’ mental degradation. We’d be living under essentially a rudderless government.

When I don’t feel like arguing with someone I shoot them a patented, “If you don’t leave me alone I will eat your liver” look. Then I say nothing. The look tends to be enough and they shut up immediately.

If someone is dumb enough not to take the warning shot, I leave the argument and get personal. “You seem to be very invested in this topic. Is it somehow impacting you personally? You’re getting angry, why is that? You know I’m not interested in this conversation, why do you feel the need to engage further with me?”

“So you’re not going to argue with me?”

Well, you know, according to the Editors of the Wall Street Journal, you shouldn’t call it ‘lying’, because that means the liar KNOWS it’s not true.

The thing is, the more accurate term ‘Bullshit’ is not permissible in most newsmedia. So they’ll stick with “Trump claimed/Opponents countered”, rather than ‘Trump bullshitted’.

Well now…

President-elect Donald Trump, a harsh critic of U.S. intelligence agencies, is working with top advisers on a plan that would restructure and pare back the nation’s top spy agency, people familiar with the planning said, prompted by a belief that the Office of the Director of National Intelligence has become bloated and politicized.

The planning comes as Mr. Trump has leveled a series of social media attacks in recent months and the past few days against U.S. intelligence agencies, dismissing and mocking their assessment that the Russian government hacked emails of Democratic groups and individuals and then leaked them last year to WikiLeaks and others in an effort to help Mr. Trump win the White House.

One of the people familiar with Mr. Trump’s planning said advisers also are working on a plan to restructure the Central Intelligence Agency, cutting back on staffing at its Virginia headquarters and pushing more people out into field posts around the world. The CIA declined to comment on the plan.

“The view from the Trump team is the intelligence world [is] becoming completely politicized,” said the individual, who is close to the Trump transition operation. “They all need to be slimmed down. The focus will be on restructuring the agencies and how they interact.”

Good point…I’ll stop pointing out his unpopularity with the good people here. I just find all the vitriol kind of silly. He lost back in fucking June for chrissakes.

Soon all us po’ folks will be driving on dirt roads while Ryan and his cronies will sail by on American Autobahns. There’s no public good the Republicans won’t attempt to stratify.

I already drive on dirt roads. Our infrastructure investment by the Federal government basically consisted of the Oregon Trail, the Transcontinental Railway, and Interstate 80.

Other than that, not so much.

Loved hearing this on the radio this morning. “Either Trump lied to the American people or he needs to promise to veto any bill that cuts Medicare, Medicaid or the ACA”

I know…it’s not as catchy as Schumer’s oft-repeated “Make America sick again” line, and everyone hates the messenger, but still…props to Bernie.

Are you implying we hate Bernie? Why do you do this all the time?

I bet you can.

I won’t place all of the blame for Hillary losing and Cheeto Jesus moving into the WH on Bernie, but things that he did and said throughout the primaries certainly helped to poison the well among his supporters (and also among the media and the general public) when he didn’t get the nom. Now that he’s back in Congress in his lily-white, safe-as-all-hell Senate seat, pardon us for not genuflecting on his “courage” and his “conviction” going up against the GOPers. Also, notice in that C-SPAN screenshot that Bernie slunk away from his marriage-of-convenience to the Democratic Party after the election.

Fuck Bernie.

Bernie did measurably little damage to HRC. So did every asshole who put their snit, their pet cause, their self-aggrandizement in the in the road like so many pebbles. It only needed a little damage to trip her. The rest she did to herself.

Not in my case. Much higher premiums and rising quickly. Much much higher deductible. I can no longer use the local hospital unless I pay the first $50,000. I can no longer use the U of UT health system for specialists. I acknowledge that ACA is not all bad, but it is not all good either.

I fall in the group of individual policy holders that are not eligible for subsidies. It has not been a good thing for me.

I’m not saying that Bernie and his BoBers did all (or most) of the damage Hillary took, but I tend to think that it was a bit more than “measurably little”, if for no other reason that, given the GOP’s almost-three-decade-long (ultimately successful) smear campaign against her (and a compliant media), any damage she took was going to possibly be too much, even if she ran a absolutely flawless campaign on the ground from beginning to end (which we now know had some major issues).

Among the self-inflicted injuries, Hillary’s chances at the WH suffered death-by-a-thousand-cuts…and Bernie and the BoBers definitely got in more than a few shots.

Yup, I’m going through the same thing here in my village. (Maybe, if the Dems run someone for our House district in two years, we might be able to put up a challenge here if more of the people in my district think the same as my town.)

I say again, you look like a candidate. People on this board will donate to your campaign, DKos readers will donate to your campaign, and you might be surprised how many of your own villagers will donate to your campaign.

They’re not supposed to be doing the important journalism, but no one else will.

When I was in Moscow in the early 90’s, the best political coverage was in Molodoi Komsomolets, the Communist Youth League publication
