PLL is now suspended. I gave him a final warning a couple of days ago, and he came in tonight and pulled the same shit again. I’m done. That’s it. Patience officially at an end.

It’s a good thing. You said so yourself, he puts the whole site at risk with his stupid outlandish comments. Blanket assertions about people should be abhorred. Sure, the southern United States has its share of racists and bigots, doesn’t make it right if I say “all Southerners are racists and bigots.” Which is a sad and frequent tactic of ProLifeLiberal.

If I say “this is it, the last straw, don’t do this again or else,” and someone does it again, I figure they’re letting me know they don’t value their LGF account. This guy had more chances than he should have. I’m a patient person and I prefer to think the best of people, but there comes a time when you have to realize you’re being taken advantage of.

That’s too bad. I understand, but I fear for the mental health of the guy. As much he pissed some off, he may have needed that outlet and the feedback. With that gone it might not be helpful for him.

And I understand you don’t need to have that. Just stating my concern for him.

He has some issues which he admits and he can be his own worst enemy. But that can also be bad, being he can be his own worst enemy.

I hope he finds peace, with himself and with his world.

*THIS*.

He never took initiative, just wanted his Imam to get him a woman to be with for the rest of his life. That’s not how healthy relationships come about. And he’d then bitch about how he can’t get a wife endlessly (there must be hundreds and hundreds of comments by PLL in this vein).

PLL is on the autistic spectrum, on a further side. I can sympathize with his social awkwardness. Still, he’s been given cues, advice, good will, on this board for many years, and he didn’t listen. It’s his own damn fault he can’t cultivate relationships, and his banning here.

But this isn’t a psychologists’ office, it’s a commenting community, and he was making it a VERY unpleasant experience for a lot of people. We’re all adults here. If he needs help, he should get it, but it’s not LGF’s responsibility to give it to him, and it doesn’t help him to continue tolerating abusive behavior.

I understand Charles. I was just commenting that I think he seemed to be on the edge…maybe more than just the spectrum, though it could start with that. I had friends that were on the edge. It didn’t go well for them. I just feel for people, and that is why I commented.

Edit to add…Yes, I do hope he gets help for his anger and where that comes from within him.

If he were capable of that kind of learning, he would not be banned.

I have expressed a lot of exasperation with that young man for a while now. The fact is that I truly have empathy. He has issues. I have issues. We all have issues.

The thing is this: part of being an adult is having a modicum of self awareness. I will be honest: it took me into my 30s to realize that doing the same thing the same way over and over and expecting different results was a dead end. If he is not in his 30s, he soon will be…so I sincerely hope he will arrive at a similar revelation soon.

The other thing is that it is not enough to know one needs help. One also needs to know where to ask. While frequently sub-optimal, most every community in America has an infrastructure for getting troubled people the mental health care they need at a price they can deal with. Most religious communities have an infrastructure for helping members meet like minded singles.

For some reason, he thought this was the place to get both kinds of help. I will never understand that.

I am sorry to see Ziggy suspended. We all have issues and problems; this is certainly magnified for those on the autism spectrum.

As to some of the other criticisms, as a woman, I did not see his desire for help in meeting someone as unusual or offensive. Many guys are awkward and need assistance in finding the right woman.

Could his situation have been handled by removing the offensive posts rather then suspending the account? This site was important to him and I share ObserverArt’s concern that the loss of the community would be harmful to him.

Although I joined recently, I have actually been reading the site occasionally over the past few years and Ziggy was part of it. Many mental health problems do not have a real treatment; in some cases, it could be analogous to trying to teach a blind person to see. Maybe, the suspension could be temporary.

There’s only so much that I can do, but he’s a fellow Muslim and a convert on top of it. Someone needs to help guide him as much as possible. I think his heart’s in the right place, but he really needs to control his emotions and anger. And it’s imperative for me to stay by his side so he doesn’t get lead astray.

I have no doubt you are coming from a genuinely warm hearted and sincere place, but I have to say I think you are off base in a couple of different ways.

First of all, while mental health problems may not be “cured”, there are absolutely coping skills that CAN be learned. All it takes is for one to desire to learn these skills and seek them out. He does neither.

Second of all, he has already had temporary suspensions. I am not exaggerating when I say there have also been dozens of “offensive posts” removed over the years.

Again, I get where you are coming from. Just please take it from me and others: the level of empathy and tolerance that was shown here for years was EXTRAORDINARY. I honestly do not feel there are many (or ANY) other online communities that would have put up with as much as Charles and the community here has. At some point, you have to move on.

QFT

I wanted to help the dude, over and over. I gave him some tough love which was criticized by some Lizards here. In the end he doesn’t want to help himself, and he can’t visit this site as a result of his intransigence.

Targetpractice  Jan 16, 2017 • 10:10:07pm

We all have that person in our lives, whether it be a friend, a family member, a coworker, an acquaintance, etc. That person who has so many problems that you can’t help but feel pity for them and want to help them. But every time you try to make the effort, you get through to them for a short time, then they revert back to type and you can’t help but feel that all your effort was wasted. You give them advice, you point them in the right direction, you listen to their concerns, and you do all you can to give them a reassuring shoulder. But no matter what you do, it never seems to lead anywhere, because they end up right back where they started, blaming everybody but themselves for their backsliding.

Eventually, even the patience of Job is tested to its limit and you have to acknowledge that some people are beyond help. As much as it may hurt your heart to admit it, sometimes you just can’t save everybody.

PLL could have vented almost any way he wanted to here in connection with “Serbian ultra-nationalists”. Instead he went with the broad bush to all Serbians.

IMO that stuff being posted here is a deliberate attempt to seek validation for such angry nonsense, and nobody should be asked to put up with that indefinitely.

I am so sorry to hear about Ziggy.

Charles did what he needed to do. He has to keep the site working. And anger like Ziggy’s can damage his hard work.

Unshaken Defiance  Jan 16, 2017 • 10:23:55pm

This place is not for everyone. I refer to my own wife by her nic here, but she does not post because blogging on politics and current events carries risks and nuances she avoids. We get plenty of room to vent, even to make serious mistakes. But the reason this space has value is it that is an oasis from that kind of anger. One under constant assault. Now we have a big damn job ahead to resist certain Presidential agendas and still keep our heads. Not fuck up with violence or hate talk. Not get a mean streak. These are Troubled Times. Hold the high ground, stay smart. It’s more important now, higher stakes. Charles said suspended, so I like to think PLL can one day find his mental center, some inner peace and return in good time and with good style.

For God’s sake man, not even Bosnian Muslims who suffered the worst of it all in Srebrenica would tar all Serbs with such a brush.

If only he could at least grasp that. And they actually LOST loved ones in that horrific massacre. Neither Ziggy or myself can never relate to the horrors they’ve gone through and how strong they are in forgiving their oppressors.

Always one of the wiser Lizards, and we’re fuckin’ the same age!

From a proud Coloradan to a proud Virginian, I salute you.

:-D

It’s not the age, it’s the mileage. Seen many folks like PLL on other boards, those who have a lot of negativity in their personal lives that is turning into drama on the boards. Some just need a shoulder to cry on, others need to be slapped upside the heads, and others are just total trolls looking to get a quick laugh. And then there are those who have very real issues, ones that need professional help and not just a kind person willing to listen to them. In those instances, they need to have the door slammed in their face before they’ll stop and reexamine their behavior.

Hopefully ED: electrotek will help him get through this. There are others who feel absolute despair over the nightmare facing us.

No offense, but while we’ve all had our episodes of anger and despair since Election Night (myself included), PLL’s problems predate this election and many of the things he’s said since the Election, he has said in the past or something similar. He has some very real issues and Trump winning the election was not the start of them.

Woke up this morning to a fair amount of anti-US/Trump/Putin rhetoric on the French/German political scenes after the disastrous interview (what a surprise) Caligula gave the Europress yesterday.

Now that England is out of the diplomatic loop & more or less forced to seek refuge in the arms of the Orange Ogre, the core European countries have a freer hand; not seen any mentions of this in the MSM but Germany is now talking nuclear partnership with France in anticipation of NATO’s neutering by the Pumpkin Pinochet. The fact is, no one is trusting the US anymore. This may extend to intelligence sharing which would only increase the risk of another successful strike on US land.

Also talks of a new Europe-China alliance to balance what’s being seen as the Trump-Putin axis.

In 48 hours we’ve gone to the World-as-we-knew-it to “let’s play RISK on speed.”

I’m not sure what your oligarchs are thinking: do they believe that some tax breaks & getting rid of pesky 20th century laws will be enough to make up for the huge backlash & increased risk factors coming your way? Most puzzling.

re: #80 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

Granted, but better to start with a 30-points lead, no? :-)

The peculiarity of the French political scene is that the FN isn’t a new populist/demagogic movement like those that propelled Brexit and DT forward, but an old entrenched and corrupt party that has been there for decades and suffers from a justifiably bad PR image. They’re powerful enough to knock a first round candidate out, but have never expanded they reach beyond the high 20, let’s say 30% tops.

Anyway I’m not making any predictions, but only noting that the situation on the ground is very different from UKIP and DT/Tea Party.

As a reminder, filing for the class-action payout over fixing milk prices in several states expires on January 31.

The article about the original lawsuit, in which half a million milk cows were slaughtered to drive up milk prices can be found at Huffington Post:

huffingtonpost.com?

Class action firm Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP filed the suit in 2011 on behalf of dairy consumers, against dairy lobbying group National Milk Producers Federation and industry cooperatives Dairy Farmers of America, Land O’ Lakes, DairyLea Cooperative and Agrimark.

The suit states that Cooperatives Working Together, a trade group led by the NMPF, oversaw a “herd retirement program” between 2003 and 2010. That “retirement” program consisted of dairy cooperatives buying out entire herds of cattle — primarily from small farms — and sending them for early slaughter. (“Spent” dairy cows are typically slaughtered for cheap ground beef, Leahy said, though she couldn’t speak to the fate of each cow in this program.)

This limited the supply of raw milk, thus driving up prices for products like yogurt, cream and cottage cheese, according to the suit.

(More at the link above)

The site to file for the claim ($10-$20 for consumers, up to $560 for institutions):

The answer to this problem is for each family to own its own cow. Under the Affordable Cow Act or ACA, otherwise known as O’Learycare.

The standard deduction is constructed in such a manner that paperwork is reduced for the average taxpayer.

The standard deduction is a tax benefit.

You could itemise deductions, and claim charitable deductions, along with sales taxes, medical expenses, and other such things.

If you itemise you have to be able to produce receipts or other such documentation to prove you actually incurred the expense.

Except that itemizing is designed specifically for people who own multiple homes, etc. If you itemize, you can deduct the real estate taxes on every property you own, as well as the mortgage interest on up to two houses. You tell the average American that, and they will ask “Two houses? Who the hell do I look like?”

And even if I itemized, I probably still wouldn’t meet the deductible threshold for the medical expenses. Thank God I have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) which at least lets me avoid paying taxes on the copays for my diabetic supplies and insulin.

The only time I filed 1040 and itemised deductions was when I was in the Navy and still performing Irish folk music for money: I had to file for depreciation of my hammered dulcimer for business expense.

I just looked up the rules for charitable deductions at the IRS. You may deduct up to 50% of you taxable income for lawful charities defined in the tax code, including certain foreign charities. If you gave away that much of your income, you would be filing Form 1040 to itemise your deductions. (Lots of zeros on the form, but the list of charities would go on it.)

98
Anymouse  Jan 17, 2017 • 4:30:55am

My wife and I own our home outright (we paid cash for it). No mortgage deductions for us. Since I have been married, we have never itemised deductions.

The IRS advises that if you think you might have a lot of deductions, you should figure your income tax both ways (with the standard deduction and with itemised). You then file the way that means you owe the least tax.

There are certain scenarios where you are required to file an itemised form, notably if you are married filing separately and your spouse itemise.

99
Anymouse  Jan 17, 2017 • 4:36:02am

irs.gov

Certain taxpayers can’t use the standard deduction:

A married individual filing as married filing separately whose spouse itemizes deductions.
An individual who files a tax return for a period of less than 12 months because of a change in his or her annual accounting period.
An individual who was a nonresident alien or a dual-status alien during the year. However, nonresident aliens who are married to a U.S. citizen or resident alien at the end of the year and who choose to be treated as U.S. residents for tax purposes can take the standard deduction. For additional information, refer to Publication 519, U.S. Tax Guide for Aliens.
An estate or trust, common trust fund, or partnership; see Code Section 63(c)(6)(D).

You should itemize deductions if your allowable itemized deductions are greater than your standard deduction or if you must itemize deductions because you can’t use the standard deduction.

You may be able to reduce your tax by itemizing deductions on Form 1040, Schedule A (PDF), Itemized Deductions. Itemized deductions include amounts you paid for state and local income or sales taxes, real estate taxes, personal property taxes, mortgage interest, and disaster losses. You may also include gifts to charity and part of the amount you paid for medical and dental expenses. You would usually benefit by itemizing on Form 1040, Schedule A (PDF), if you:

Can’t use the standard deduction or the amount you can claim is limited
Had large uninsured medical and dental expenses
Paid interest or taxes on your home
Had large unreimbursed employee business expenses or other miscellaneous deductions
Had large uninsured casualty or theft losses, or
Made large contributions to qualified charities

They are some of the biggest names in the Republican national security firmament, veterans of past GOP administrations who say, if called upon by President-elect Donald Trump, they stand ready to serve their country again.

But their phones aren’t ringing. Their entreaties to Trump Tower in New York have mostly gone unanswered. In Trump world, these establishment all-stars say they are “PNG” — personae non gratae.

Their transgression was signing one or both of two public “Never Trump” letters during the campaign, declaring they would not vote for Trump and calling his candidacy a danger to the nation.

re: #77 Lupin

My friends in Europe are saying the same thing. Sending me links to various European articles. First they were laughing at Trump, now they are holding His Ass-Holeyness in utter contempt.

Another reason I am not on Twitter. I applaud the intestinal fortitude of those like you or Mr. Johnson or others who can go toe-to-toe with such people, but I don’t think I could really do much.

Can’t do anything about the weather, and there seems to be little anyone can do to stop the Trump takeover and Putin’s puppet having his way with the US intel services and shifting US foreign policy in ways that inure benefit to Putin’s Russia.

Meanwhile, Putin’s putting his 2 cents in to the Trump takeover and the assorted scandals even before he takes office:

Why do powerful people go to hookers in the first place? Because of the thrill? Because they get off on the power of paying someone to do their bidding? Because they can?

I like this paragraph from Richard Cohen:

By the end of the week, Trump will be the president. I wish him the best; I wish him the worst. The dilemma is how to separate loathing for him from love of country. I am leaving it to time to work that out. Meanwhile, Trump will have his moment, that’s for sure, but when things go wrong he will be chased from office — just like Johnson once was. The ancient Greeks knew why: A man’s character is his fate. In that case, Trump’s presidency is doomed.

She said she did not understand why there were so many mice coming in the building and was considering asking the village board for money for an exterminator.

I pointed out that the village hall is one block west of a feedlot and three blocks east of a cornfield. When it gets cold, mice come into the building - that has been a complaint ever since I moved here.

We have the same problem in my house. I live equidistant between the cornfield and the feedlot. I suggested to her that she ask the village board for a cat.

Clinton Foundation shutting down the Clinton Global Initiative.

Foreign governments began pulling out of annual donations, signaling the organization’s clout was predicated on donor access to the Clintons, rather than its philanthropic work. In November, the Australian government confirmed it “has not renewed any of its partnerships with the scandal-plagued Clinton Foundation, effectively ending 10 years of taxpayer-funded contributions worth more than $88 million.” The government of Norway also drastically reduced their annual donations, which reached $20 million a year in 2015.

On January 12, the Clinton Foundation received more bad news: a WARN notice was filed with the New York Department of Labor. The main office of the Clinton Global Initiative in New York City would be closing, laying off 22 employees.

This doesn’t surprise me completely. But Bill Clinton did do some good work with his foundation and that should be recognized. In the age of Trump any kind of charity lost will be felt.

Well, they don’t have to shut down the charity completely…they just need to scale back from doing hundreds of millions of dollars a year to tens of millions of dollars a year. It’s entirely possible to still do good work with that much money. I’m sure even I could do some good with an eight figure budget.

Remember that story last night about Laura Ingraham wanting to challenge Tim Kaine’s Senate seat next year?

I saw this in my daily email from radio trade blogger Tom Taylor, which summarizes the Examiner article…

She was close to Donald Trump through his campaign and may’ve contracted an even deeper case of the political bug. The Washington Examiner says that syndicated radio talker Ingraham “is eyeing a Senate run in Virginia, and a challenge to Hillary Clinton’s running mate, Senator Tim Kaine.” It says “several party insiders have approached her to run, and she is considering it.” Not only that, her business partner Peter Anthony has reportedly “begun buying website domains” like IngrahamSenate. net, Ingraham2018. com and IngrahamForVirginia. com. The downside - she’d have to give up her radio platform, once she’s an official candidate.

Uhhhh… that’s not really a downside. If anything, this is a campaign that NEEDS to happen.

Nothing about shutting down on their Website.

clintonfoundation.org

Cue wingnut happy dances.

In the meantime, it would appear that Google quietly removed the “fake news” reason for removing Websites from AdSense after Media Matters for America complained about several Websites that were distributing fake news in violation of its terms of service.

Google continuing to be evil.

mediamatters.org

Google has removed language referencing fake news from its “prohibited content” policy for websites that use its advertising network. The policy previously stated that these sites cannot engage in “deceptively presenting fake news articles as real.”

As of January 10, at least 20 of the 24 fake news-purveying websites flagged by Media Matters in December were still using Google’s advertising network, Google AdSense, despite Google’s November 14 announcement that it would restrict websites from using the network if they feature misrepresentative content. That announcement drew a wave of positive press saying Google was combating fake news, but it appears not to have led to the promised changes.

In December, Media Matters shared its findings directly with Google and asked the company to enforce its new policy. A Google spokesperson initially took issue with the characterization that it has a policy on “fake news,” stating that the company had “no policy specific to fake news.” Media Matters responded with a screenshot of Google’s policy page that explicitly cited “fake news” as an example of unacceptable content and offered additional evidence demonstrating that the flagged sites were in violation of Google’s policy.

Google proceeded to leave the ads on the misrepresentative sites, instead quietly removing the reference to “fake news” from its much-lauded “fake news” policy.

More at Media Matters. They are not happy about Google’s quiet change of policy. Expect sites like Breitbart and such to continue to receive revenue from Google AdSense.

I’ve been here a fairly short time, and many times I saw folks trying to explain how getting a SO/life partner/spouse really works and he seemed to always revert to “I am unhappy that my demand for an appropriate spouse is not being met.” He just could not, or would not, let go of that idea that, as you say, a wife is a commodity. ( On top of the obvious problem with that, I can’t imagine that would result in a long, happy marriage.) John Dean has nightmares about Donald Trump
theatlantic.com

Yet, he’s profoundly pessimistic about the prospect of Trump facing any true accountability while in office. In the four decades since Nixon resigned, Dean says, the institutions that are meant to keep a president’s power in check—the press, Congress, even the courts—have been rendered increasingly weak and ineffectual by a sort of creeping partisan paralysis. (Imagine, if you dare, the Breitbart headlines that would follow Woodward and Bernstein’s first scoop if they were breaking their story today.)

On Monday night, Michael Flynn Jr. — son of and former chief of staff for President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for national security adviser, retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn — tweeted out a story published on Voltaire Network entitled, “General Flynn’s Proposals to Reform Intelligence.”

The story, published last month with a Damascus dateline and authored by Thierry Meyssan — a 9/11 truther who published a book in 2002 entitled, “The Big Lie” — previews how Flynn plans to rollback “the big reforms that took place during the Bush and Obama years.”

Perhaps most significantly, the story says the “radical overhaul” Flynn is planning involves the elimination of the office of the Director of National Intelligence, an office created by President Bush in 2004, with power centralized under Flynn instead.

“The 16 agencies should no longer be accountable to the National Intelligence Director but only to the National Security Adviser,” Meyssan writes. “In other words, they will be accountable to General Flynn personally.”

The story cites anonymous sources, which some informed observers believe include Flynn Jr. himself. Last month, CNN broke news that Flynn Jr. was working in an official capacity for the Trump transition team, but the Trump team quickly distanced themselves from him after Flynn Jr.’s social media posts amplifying unfounded conspiracy theories and racist memes came under scrutiny.

I have a huge problem with nationalist Serb idiots, but that goes for any group where they take pride in the past to make up for their failures of the present.

But while I realize that Serbs do deny the crimes of their own like Turks do with Armenians, that doesn’t necessarily mean all Serbs are evil; same with Turks.

Unfortunately, Serbs as a whole are victims of nationalist propaganda so despite their vehement denial and victimhood, that doesn’t make them ‘genocidal’ or horrible people all to their own. I admit I still have some kind of prejudice against Serbs because in the past the ones I encountered were nationalist blowhards who justify their anti-Muslim bigotry by citing their supposedly “heroic” efforts in the war. However, after meeting quite a few Serbs in the interim who not only admit their fucked up in the war, but also have the courage to apologize and make amends for what they did and to ensure it never happens again. That struck a chord in me because I’m the same way, as a Pakistani, when it comes to the genocide of Bengalis in the 1970s which is undoubtedly a dark stain on the country’s history (which can also explain why I’m unapologetic about being critical of Pakistan and the nationalist sentiments of many Pakistanis). Hopefully in my case, I will eventually have ZERO prejudice against Serbs with the more I meet and realize that they are just people, like Bosniaks and Croats.

Unfortunately, only 8% of Serbia’s population admit that Srebrenica happened, so there will be a lot of work that’s needed for Serbs to admit their crimes and to ensure they don’t happen again. Not to mention that they won’t be tarred even further when another anti-Muslim fascist commits a massacre in their name like Anders Breivik did. They are unfortunate victims of nationalist propaganda that strives to cover the truth by all means necessary. This is not unique to Serbs so we can’t pin this entirely on Serbs or on Orthodox Christians in general.

Yeah but Trump will replace the ACA with something “really terrific”, at some point in time, maybe.

Trump is running another con, like Trump University. Promise the moon and the stars on healthcare so that they can get that Obamacare repeal passed and the massive tax cuts for the rich that comes with it.

Exactly. Even if some Serb blowhards keep saying how Croats are all Nazis to justify their acts of aggression, that’s just them.

I keep that logic in mind when I encounter Islamophobic Armenians from time to time, realizing that they are just them and they only represent themselves as individuals, not Armenians as a whole.

I just wished I would extend that courtesy with Assyrians and Chaldeans, but hopefully with time and more communication with them that will occur.

Wait. What?

The GOP will keep the preexisting conditions provision, but scrap the individual mandate?

Ryan keeps talking about how the ACA/Obamacare is in a death spiral (which it isn’t), but the repeal of the individual mandate (the GOP/Heritage plan to counter the Democrats’ plans during the 1990s) would actually facilitate a death spiral and mean that people who aren’t sick aren’t getting into covered plans, meaning that the risk pool for the insurers would be confined to only those who are sick - meaning that it would add to the debt, harm the insurers, and make it worse for everyone.

This is how the GOP operates. And they want to hide the details and consequences of their actions.

I could see them rolling back the individual mandate and make a big deal out of keeping the pre-existing condition component only to then either:

A) Turn a blind eye
B) Not bother enforcing the law

Thereby allowing insurance companies to deny coverage for all sorts of bullshit reasons and get away with it.

I’m not going to lie, I’m taking Ziggy’s behavior very personally that lead to his ban. I’m obviously not upset at Charles for his decision because I understand he had to do what he had to do…because when push comes to shove, there’s only so much leniency to apply to someone who keeps repeating it. It just frustrates me because I totally think he’s a good guy at heart but he keeps letting these transgressions get to him. And he’s more of a religious Muslim than I am, but he still does this from time to time. It says a lot that I have to remind him of what Islam teaches when it comes to this. None of us are perfect, but as long as we have someone to keep each other in check, that’s what is needed at times.

Not everyone is self-sufficient enough to keep themselves in line, unfortunately.

This is also part of my self-introspection as well, because I’ve been guilty of it in the past so I can speak from experience.

Oh goodie, Maine loon Gov. LePage is whitesplainin’ to Rep. John Lewis about legitimacy and how to be a good follower.

Guess LePage wanted to get in on the Trump twit action.

LePage, who’s white, said on WVOM-FM that the black Democratic Georgia congressman needs a history lesson on how Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves and how Ulysses S. Grant and Rutherford B. Hayes fought against Jim Crow laws, which enforced racial segregation.

“A simple thank you would suffice,” LePage said.

Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and pushed for the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery. But historians say LePage is wrong about Jim Crow laws.

Jim Crow laws didn’t exist during the Grant administration and an electoral deal that put Hayes in office led to the end of Reconstruction and the removal of federal troops, setting the stage for the creation of Jim Crow laws that followed, said Colby professor Dan Shea.

“Paul LePage is going to give John Lewis a tutorial on the history of black oppression in the United States? That’s rich,” Shea said.

Myron,

Are you familiar with former Cleveland horror host Ghoulardi?

He was very risque for the time. He ran into some troubles with TV censors doing some of his pranks, but it was fun.

Used to watch him in my youth…being 9 to 11 years old it was easy to be scared with those old black and white creature type movies and the like.

He would cut himself into some of the movie scenes many times right in the scenes where you would see the monster or creature. But his own bits before and during the shows were the best feature. He used to pick on Parma all the time as a ling running side joke.

Big Chuck and Hoolihan then took over and I watched them some, but Ghoulardi set the stage for them.

10% spending cuts. 20% workforce cuts.

This is a GOP wet dream of slash and burn of government services, regardless of the consequences.

For instance, the NPS has a $10B backlog on infrastructure projects, thanks to sequestration and GOP making it impossible to properly fund core services of the NPS to maintain its assets. A 10% hit to the NPS would mean expanding the backlog (much of it is road and facility maintenance), and meaning that despite record attendance across the NPS system, they’d see worse service thanks to Trump and the GOP.

Rinse and repeat across federal agency after agency.

The real reason Barnum & Bailey are closing down is because after the inauguration there’s no way to compete with the other circus.

They’ll be performing here in Jacksonville, FL over the Inaugural weekend, starting Thursday night, through Sunday.
Also have a show schedule in Birmingham, AL during same period.

I wonder if they’ll out-draw the Inaugural balls Friday evening…

re: #288 Big Beautiful Door

You are accepting GOP assurances at face value? Buhlieve me, any GOP replacement plan will require people with preexisting conditions to maintain continuous coverage; that is their alternative to the mandate.

I imagine one consequence of any “continuous coverage” requirement would be to “anchor” people to their current home states. Or, if insurance companies are allowed to sign up customers from any of these United States, but with freedom to “headquarter” in whichever state has insurance regulations most corporate-business-friendly, and subscriber-hostile, there will be a rapid race to the bottom for value vs cost.

Read this, it explains everything:

Despite all the evidence to the contrary, most political consultants still assume that there’s a middle ground of reasonable voters out there to be claimed. …None of the strategies to win the “moderate middle” succeeded this year because there are very few actual “moderate” voters left. So-called “moderate” voters often simply have extremist policy preferences that don’t line up neatly with the division between America’s two parties.

Most crucially, “swing” voters tend to be the least informed voters in the electorate. Partisans on both sides tend to know far more about politics than the undecided voters in the alleged middle.

These are the so-called “undecideds” who broke so heavily for Pumpkin Pinochet in the week before the election. And yes, to win again, Democrats need to figure out a message that breaks through such willful and abject dumbassery.

It’s interesting because in Russia, there’s a huge widespread disconnect between the Asian and European parts of the country.

The further east you go, the more you will have RHD Japanese imports dominating the roads in Siberia. It’s a lot more common to find Japanese-market Toyota Land Cruisers, Nissan Safaris/Patrols, and Mitsubishi Pajeros in the streets of Vladivostok than you would see Russian-built Chevrolet Tahoes/Trailblazers. And this for a country that drives on the right side of the road, while having the steering wheel also on the right.

The European part is consistent with the rest of the continent, so you wouldn’t see second-hand Japanese vehicles clogging up the freeways and city streets of Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The Russians that live in Siberia wouldn’t even purchase a Russian-built Japanese car as they know first-hand that Japanese imports are far more reliable and better built than the ones made by their countrymen.

Interesting, huh?

This “poetry” sucks harder than the Edgar Guest crap that I had to read in grade school.

The poem, published in full in The Scotsman this weekend, reads as follows:

“Come out for the Domhnall, ye brave men and proud,
The scion of Torquil and best of MacLeod!
With purpose and strength he came down from his tower
To snatch from a tyrant his ill-gotten power.

Now the cry has gone up with a cheer from the crowd:
“Come out for the Domhnall, the best of MacLeod!”
When freedom is threatened by slavery’s chains
And voices are silenced as misery reigns
,

We’ll come out for a leader whose courage is true
Whose virtues are solid and long overdue.
For, he’ll never forget us, we men of the crowd
Who elected the Domhnall, the best of MacLeod!

When crippling corruption polluted our nation
And plunged our economy into stagnation,
As self-righteous rogues took the opulent office
And plump politicians reneged on their promise

The forgotten continued to form a great crowd
That defended the Domhnall, the best of MacLeod!
The Domhnall’s a giver whilst others just take,
Ne’er gaining from that which his hands did not make.

A builder of buildings, employing good men,
He’s enriched many cities by factors of ten.
The honest and true gladly march with the crowd
Standing up for the Domhnall, the best of MacLeod!

True friend of the migrant from both far and near,
He welcomes the worthy, but guards our frontier,
Lest a murderous horde, for whom hell is the norm,
Should threaten our lives and our nation deform.

We immigrants hasten to swell the great crowd.”
Coming out for the Domhnall, the best of MacLeod!
Academe now lies dead, the old order rots,
No longer policing our words and our thoughts;

Its ignorant hirelings pretending to teach
Are backward in vision, sophomoric in speech.
Now we learnèd of mind add ourselves to the crowd
That cheers on the Domhnall, the best of MacLeod!

The black man, forgotten, in poverty dying,
The poor man, the sick man, with young children crying,
The soldier abroad and the mother who waits,
The young without work or behind prison gates,

The veterans, wounded, all welcome the crowd
That fights for the Domhnall, the best of MacLeod!
Whilst hapless old harridans flapping their traps
Teach women to look and behave like us chaps,

The Domhnall defends the defenseless forlorn;
For, a woman’s first right is the right to be born.
Now the bonnie young lassies that fly to the crowd
Have a champion in Domhnall, the best of MacLeod!

Years ago I was friends with a woman whose father was Serb; she would talk vividly about the Kosovo war of 1389 when the Serbs confronted the Turks. She was still hostile to Muslims because of that battle.

At one time I believed that if Tito could have lived another 50 years this hostility between these nationalities would have disappeared, but it looks like it takes only one malicious leader to reignite hatreds that had been slowly dissipating.

Totally off topic…though our topics have jumped this thread….but is anyone going to the national or their local Women’s Marches?

I am going in Houston, wearing my “Women Are Strong As Hell” t-shirt. My oldest son, 14, asked if he can go with me, so he’s hanging out too. Get ‘em started protesting young, by God.

The “main” Texas march is in Austin, but there are a lot of us in Houston that just can’t get there. We were trying to defer to Austin for the march to keep their numbers high but we’re the 4th largest and most diverse city in the U.S. We need to stand up here too. That was decided this weekend and the social media call went out Sunday.

24 hours later, we’re at over 10,000 committed online to be there. We’re scrambling for the necessary permits but the City of Houston is working beautifully with us to get it done. Now they’re lining up speakers for the event.

24 hours. That’s all it took. And it will grow this whole week.

Onward.

The Fourth Santa Fe Conference on Global & Regional Climate Change will be held on Feb 5-10, 2017. It is the fourth in a series organized and chaired by Petr Chylek of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and takes place intervals of 5 years or thereabouts. It is sponsored this year by LANL’s Center for Earth and Space Science and co-sponsored by the American Meteorological Society. I attended the Third in the series, which was held the week of Oct 31, 2011. I reported on it here in my essay “Climate cynicism at the Santa Fe conference”.

[…]

I concluded after the 3rd Santa Fe conference that cynicism was the only attribute that was shared by the minority of attendees who were deniers, contrarians, publicity-seekers, enablers, or provocateurs. I now think that cynicism has something in common with greenhouse gases. Cynicism begets cynicism, to the detriment of society. There are natural-born cynics, and if they turn the rest of us into cynics then we are their amplifiers, just like water vapor is an amplifier of carbon dioxide’s greenhouse effect. We become part of a cynical feedback loop that generates distrust in science and the scientific method. I refuse to let that happen. I might have gotten a little steamed by an unfair or inappropriate rejection, but I’ve cooled off and my induced cynicism has condensed now. I am not going to assume that everyone is a cynic just because of a couple of misguided and misinformed decisions.

[…]

Even the scientists can speak up and inspire. I think they have been all along, for the most part.

This is where I was getting to, about Breivik. If they keep spewing this type of hateful rhetoric about Muslims, then they should not be upset when someone like Anders Breivik cites their historical grievance to justify one of the worst terrorist attacks in European history.

And many of them do get extremely defensive when you point out that their anti-Muslim rhetoric mirrors that of Anders Breivik, without noting the irony of it all.

In short, they should get over the fucking past and move the fuck on. Croats aren’t Nazis, Bosniaks aren’t the Turks of yesteryears, and Albanians aren’t all Muslim or Catholic.

And it shows that the Democrats who ran against Obamacare in 2010, 2012, and 2014 did more to screw up the long term prospects for the health care program (and the nation) because they thought opposition to something that would benefit all Americans was a bad thing.

Now, it turns out that when people realize just how bad things will get now that the program is under assault are having a change of mind.

Furthermore, it’s also ironic that Serbs benefited immensely during Ottoman rule (they had a extremely extravagant Orthodox Church built for them in the 1870s, in spite of opposition by area Muslims), while the Albanians were the ones that fought against the Ottomans (Skanderbeg comes to mind).

A lot of Serbs do rely on historical revisionist dogma that would fit their victimization mentality about how they were supposedly the victims of Muslims, which could be further from the truth.

Not to nitpick, but there’s no such thing as a SUV named Navarro by Nissan. It’s most likely a Japanese-market Pathfinder or Safari/Patrol. The Navara is a pickup, which is the same as the Frontier sold stateside (except Frontier is built in TN while the Navara is built in JP and Thailand).

That’s just it - his bigotry and hate got him the White House. His supporters see it as a necessary cleansing following Obama’s term. When pressed on what made past 8 years so horrible - that it was the worst period ever - they are notoriously ambiguous or silent.

Reality is that it’s because they hate the black guy who was in the White House, and this is restoring politics to its proper order. That’s why they opposed Clinton so much - having a woman follow a black guy would have been too much for these special snowflakes to handle - that their fellow Americans now had the same rights and privileges that these white guys took for granted all these decades.

Or they’ve bought Trump’s baffling BS about divestment and eliminating his conflicts of interest.

Nothing Trump’s done passes muster with the people who make these determinations for a living - and whose job it is to make sure that elected leaders aren’t violating the law.

There’s been no divestment. No blind trusts. Nothing. Just promises to do so and throwing a bunch of empty file folders on to a table. That’s not proof. That’s just spin and BS.

I think he portrays himself as a good-guy, but really isn’t.
He showed up here with the absurd username “ProLifeLiberal,” which shows he embraced wingnut alternate-reality where Liberals are anti-life.

This is someone who constantly blames and wants to physically attack large groups of people.

He’s also someone who got involved in a locally-minority-religion expecting the leaders of this religion to provide him with a submissive wife when our local religions are too Liberal to trade in women as property.

There was a lot that’s off about that guy, and he got a lot more sympathy here than he would in most places. He just refused to improve for way too long.

Kos’s response to the “not my Planned Parenthood” writer:

I voted for Trump, not against Planned Parenthood

When you vote for someone, it’s a package deal. You don’t get to pick and choose.

My vote for Trump was not a vote against Planned Parenthood. I voted for him based on the issues he campaigned on: creating jobs, making health care more affordable, and making our country great again. I voted for him because I trust him to get our economy moving again.

Trump campaigned on hating Latinos, hating Muslims, and hating women—aka “making America great again.” He also campaigned on “draining the swamp,” which he promptly did by stocking his cabinet with Wall Street billionaires. He campaigned on making Russia great again. BUT, making health care more affordable? Creating jobs? That was empty boilerplate, absent any details on how he’d do it. If you voted for that, then you are a fucking moron. Don’t sit there and pretend that you’re somehow being betrayed when he does exactly what he promised to do.

The guy is a sexual predator. Overtly so. Self-admitted! And you’re going to be surprised and outraged when he and his party target Planned Parenthood? My fucking god!
You want to vote for someone based on hating others, aka “Making America Great,” then you’re going to get someone who fucking hates others. And you don’t get to exclude yourself from his targets, hoping that he gives a shit that you voted for him.

re: #511 The Vicious Babushka

Since he seems to suffer from a number of severe mental health disorders it is doubtful that Daesh would recruit him.

They have many to recruit with on their own turf so no need to recruit someone from afar.

Gonna scratch one more off the list. Booked to see this amazing voice. Beth Hart can bring it. I know she carries a razor……and knows how to use it.

They should sell cookies on the route. It would be the most Trumpian thing anyone could do.

I was really pleased that as an organization they were avoiding some of the Boy Scouts stupidity, in terms of being welcoming to all orientations.

I have lots of words today about this decision and none of them have been all that nice. But I put the nicer ones in the tweetstorm.

Plus he was caught alive, with no resistance whatsoever. Even those Da’esh terrorists who are caught alive usually show some injury of some sort during the attempt.

Lamarr’s more concerned about pushing to get the 2024 Olympics than making sure that his nominees for the Cabinet are properly vetted and prepared, let alone qualified.

Priorities. Always about the priorities.

Speaking of picking and choosing, Girl Scouts is apparently marching in the inauguration parade. I am UBER-disappointed.

Fooling some people all the time apparently. Or they just don’t care.

Or they’ve bought Lamarr’s baffling BS about divestment and eliminating his conflicts of interest.

Nothing Lamarr’s done passes muster with the people who make these determinations for a living - and whose job it is to make sure that elected leaders aren’t violating the law.

There’s been no divestment. No blind trusts. Nothing. Just promises to do so and throwing a bunch of empty file folders on to a table. That’s not proof. That’s just spin and BS.

Fortunately the beliefs of stupid people do not change the law.

Drat. Not a good choice on their part, though probably planned before the election. :(

So really—we’re expected to endure four years of this incessant infantile whining? Personally, I don’t have the stomach for listening to 1,460 days of this idiot narcissist’s non-stop, semi-literate, self-absorbed melodrama.

Not gonna subject myself to it. NOPE.
