Yeah, this is the line I hear ad nauseam from trump chumps and BoBers alike: “Red-baiting! McCarthyism! If there was any real evidence of collusion, it would’ve been leaked to the Washington Post months ago!!!11!”
And I must confess, I was beginning to think something similar - no smoking gun exists, at least, not one simple and obvious enough to make a dent in the American consciousness.
…but if didn’t…why the hell is trump now acting like it does?! o_O

I understand where he’s coming from but I feel like if we’re going to crawl out the other side of this in any kind of viable condition as a nation state we’ll need to do it on our own.

Even after Comey’s efforts to make him President, he still demands endless displays of loyalty because the pseudo-President himself is proud of owing nothing to any man. And until this week, Comey gave those assurances to him. I guess it might be interesting in an academic sort of way to find out which imposition of authority pushed him over the edge, but until practical results ensue this will have no real-world consequences.

We do. The only way I think this nation gets fixed is the way Germany was fixed in 1945, with someone else’s flag flying over Washington and someone else rewriting our laws. The citizens who cooperate with those occupiers will be forever resented, but our minority citizens are used to that, so what’s the downside?

Pennsylvania just got turned down as well for disaster relief following the massive winter storm.
President Trump denies Pa.’s disaster relief request for March snowstorm
President Donald Trump has denied Pennsylvania’s request for federal disaster aid to help cover more than $7 million in costs associated with March’s snowstorm.
“This disaster declaration would have provided much-needed financial assistance to hard-hit communities in northeastern Pennsylvania,” Gov. Tom Wolf said Thursday, in a written statement.
The Trump administration did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the denial.
Last month, Trump approved aid for a winter storm that struck Utah in February. That storm cost Utah roughly $6 million, according to that state’s Division of Emergency Management.
In a letter regarding Pennsylvania’s request, FEMA Acting Administrator Robert J. Fenton wrote, “it has been determined that the damage from this event was not of such severity and magnitude as to be beyond the capabilities of the commonwealth and affected local governments.”

Something occurred to me, regarding Trump being blindsided by Dems and others who hated what Comey did WRT the election, but who object to his firing. Because one of Trump’s big motivators is revenge (like wining and dining Mitt Romney, destroying his dignity only to choose somebody else), he would naturally assume everyone else works that way, so he’d figure the Democrats would also be primarily motivated by revenge.
There’s a story that when Stalin died and Kruschev consolidated power, those who had opposed him hid out, expecting him to have them shot., and they were surprised when he didn’t.

I do. These chumps were so woefully ill-prepared to govern that the WH staff is half full, the Cabinet offices and management teams are less than half full, and because their boss is out of control, they are unable to present policy points on a daily basis.

The term Hitler oath refers to the oaths of allegiance, or Reichswehreid, sworn by the officers and soldiers of the German Armed Forces and civil servants of Nazi Germany between the years 1934 and 1945. The oath pledged personal loyalty to Adolf Hitler in place of loyalty to the constitution of the country.

Manafort’s statement is also a lie, his work was explicitly done “on behalf” of the Russian government. The fact that he was directly employed by an oligarch instead of the Russian government doesn’t do anything to change the fact that this was his sales pitch in getting the job and description of what the job was:
“We are now of the belief that this model can greatly benefit the Putin Government if employed at the correct levels with the appropriate commitment to success,” Manafort wrote in the 2005 memo to Deripaska. The effort, Manafort wrote, “will be offering a great service that can re-focus, both internally and externally, the policies of the Putin government.”

Hogwash. They have a choice. Otherwise, the Resistance is going to get the message that there’s only one way to change things, and that’s by adopting the right-wingers’ message that the bullet box has replaced the ballot box.
Take a deep breath. I remember how long Nixon, in a noose, swung in the breeze before he eventually gave it up. Trump will be the same way, although he’ll fight harder because he is ultimately, a sociopath, with an inability to suck on his finger, stick it up int the air, and tell which way it is blowing.

It is amazing to contemplate what donald trump could have gotten away with with almost no genuine scrutiny if he wasnt so fucking stupid. It is too terrifying to contemplate what would have happened if Trump had the same level of pure malice and evil without being so ridiculously incompetent and surrounding himself with idiots and yes men.

With each passing day, it becomes more obvious that Trump is actually worse than we initially assumed. We assumed a level of deviousness that’s simply not on display. Instead we have a demented sociopath who can’t understand why people are criticizing him for doing what he wants because he’s the president and thinks that means he’s the CEO of America.

Given Castro’s tenure, that’s not so reassuring.
There is no comparison between Trump and Castro; Castro was actually competent at what he did and understood policy. He might lie about things but he would sound totally coherent when doing so. He was definitely not demented. I think what will ultimately save us from Trump — not from the Republicans — is that he actually doesn’t know or understand anything and that he appears to have some early form of dementia.

TBH, I’m wary of telling people I’m not a Sanders fan because I know how dismissive people are to people who don’t see Sanders as a savior and I feel bad because through my local campaign work, I have met many people especially college aged kids who were inspired by him and whose hearts are definitely in the right place but Sanders rubs me the wrong way. It’s not ideological, it’s that I think he’s not an inclusive leader.

Well, he is having trouble with healthcare…and needs the Senate which seems to have knobbly knees and will be reluctant with all of the investigating…politically a bit too hard to pass legislation right now. And that is holding up his tax policy too. Kinda ground to a halt right now. Now the Dem Senators are refusing any committee work if they do not get the level of investigation they want. More halting of Trump agenda.
So to me the race is on…can the Democrats along with assistance from The Trump Gang themselves, put Trump in such a state he either gets impeached or is rendered dead/useless as a politician before the Republicans can get what they want.
It’s political tug of war right now. It’s going to take some time to see who has the strength to get their way.

TBH Vermont isn’t exactly wonderful either. I’ve read some stories about how black motorists are treated there and Bernie’s own rep with the VT NAACP was pretty poor as he never reached out to them but hey black people should vote for him because of him having been a Freedom Rider which is commendable of course but still.

I fear that it isn’t up to you any more, though. The combined effects of gerrymandering and voter suppression have made it nearly impossible for Republicans to be out of power in any meaningful numbers and for any meaningful length of time. Only low turnout among their voters would have an impact, and the control of FOX and other far right media over the Republican voter is absolute and total.
For all the dysfunction in the current climate, there is no real panic or worry among Republicans. They know they can put out the most transparent of lies, or worse yet, baldly state their own treason and desire to harm Americans, and FOX will instantly instruct their base that this is good and right. The rest of the US media will dutifully present it as a valid argument and point of view and debate it for a bit before letting it go, further normalising any malfeasance. All the negative press that has been out over the past few days, all the hammering away and exposure of Republican rot, would go away in a weekend if Trump were to simply stop tweeting and speaking for a couple of days. With nothing new to deal with, Cult media and the rest of the US media will come up with a narrative that normalises the situation, and the status quo will continue.
I don’t think there is a way for Republicans in power to meaningfully fear for their jobs. Even if Democrats temporarily take over a branch of government, the cult influence on the American populace as a whole will be largely untouched.

I think a lot of people have started paying attention this week. Firing Comey was a massive miscalculation on the White House’s part. They actually believed that people of both parties would love them for this. And they’ve made it progressively worse since then.

Agreed. But Bernie is a raging asshole. He will never do right by dems. He wants to burn the party down. I despise him. Truly so.
I don’t see Bernie as an asshole. I see him as a deluded old fool stuck in the 60s with dreams of being a guru. He wants to be seen as the Knower of All, follow me all ye Truth seeking white college students… Seriously, he’s right out of the hippie handbook.

I’m aware of Paraguay’s history. I’m merely stating that I don’t think her nationality has to do with what she did. She’s a hateful person obviously and would be regardless of her place of birth imo.

Please forgive me if I cannot forgive him for what he did last year. While I’m not dismissing your assessment, the guy is all talk, no action. I find a guru who does nothing about what he’s supposedly so passionate about an asshole. And worse, if he’s a guru, he’s leading a cult.

Exactly!
What I meant by his being an asshole or not… I don’t think the guy means harm to anyone, in fact I think he really means well. I think he’s just too deluded by his fantasy to know what that means.

Me: Stop deflecting.
Him: Be fair and balanced…
Me: You’ve known me long enough to know that I am balanced. No excuses.
Him: So share a story about the Muslim men who think women can be raped and act like animals.
Not sure how to respond to that. Any takers?

I’d probably point out that you’re sharing stories about people acting on bigotry, not misogyny, which isn’t limited to only Muslims.
Except I wouldn’t actually get involved in a political discussion on FB because it’s more about scoring points and less about an actual dialogue with the other person. (You might be interested in one but I get the feeling your fellow person in the discussion is not.)

I think the best response is something along the lines of:
Assault is assault, regardless of the perpetrator or the victim. Acknowledging one instance does not mean ignoring others. Every single one of them should be held to account.
Alternatively, you can point out that any time someone starts with “not to defend…” the next thing they say is a defense. It’s like:
Final option: my wall, my posts, if they bother you, there’s the mute button.

Moot point. He deleted his comment and apologized in private. To his credit, he’s good with keeping comments to himself, so I’m willing to accept his apology. We all do stupid shit in knee-jerk reactions, myself included.
So I just let it be. I don’t think he’s a bad guy at all, because in spite of everything I still believe people are inherently good at heart (per Anne Frank).

Bernie was NOT a Freedom Rider.
re: #174 MsJ
The higher problem is the apparent lack of understanding that Democrats need more Manchins and Ben Nelsons. I hated Jane Hamsher for that. ActBlue doesn’t help either. Does it make me happy that we need blue dogs? No. But you can’t run liberals in deep red places. You have to make them deep purple first. Then you can go to blue.
The only Dem we have in our district is a former Dem who ran as a Republican (he’s still a Dem in spirit, but that’s the only way he could get elected.) I even voted in the Rep primary to make sure he was the candidate. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.
re: #5 goddamnedfrank
I feel like what Olbermann is advocating here could be deeply counter-productive. That it would only destabilize the US further and open the opposition to Trump to charges of rank hypocrisy. I understand where he’s coming from but I feel like if we’re going to crawl out the other side of this in any kind of viable condition as a nation state we’ll need to do it on our own.
It seems to me that it’s unreasonable for Trump to have Russia on his side, while the US has to limp along on its lonesome.
