NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert: The Shins

It’s actually not the whole band, but just one Shin, songwriter/singer James Mercer, performing solo with an acoustic guitar and doing an amazing job.

Bob Boilen | July 24, 2017 — The Shins have been a constant part of NPR’s musical DNA for much of the 21st century. The group’s poetic pop has shown up in something like 25 stories on our website, not just because many of us are longtime fans, but also because our listeners love them. Stories on our site include: The Best CDs of 2003: Listeners’ Picks, The Shins In Concert from 2012, Song Premiere: The Shins And Zach Braff Reunite, a recent interview on All Things Considered and so many more. It’s remarkable that there’s never been a Tiny Desk Concert from The Shins until now.

In celebration of the band’s fifth studio album, 2017’s Heartworms, singer and guitarist James Mercer, the emotional and creative center of The Shins, came to NPR to perform a handful of songs that included two new tracks and one that reached back to 2003 from the album Chutes Too Narrow. It’s a moving performance with just James on guitar, no band, no amplification - simple and perfect.

Heartworms is available now.

The whole two-man launch system (the President and the Secretary of Defense) would have completely fallen apart if Hillary Clinton been elected. Take that, libtards. /s

Trump’s already stuck his neck out too far - not long after he issues that ultimatum, DPRK state media reports they’re looking at plans for attacking Guam.

North Korea said on Wednesday it is “carefully examining” a plan to strike the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam with missiles, just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump told the North that any threat to the United States would be met with “fire and fury”.

A spokesman for the Korean People’s Army, in a statement carried by the North’s state-run KCNA news agency, said the strike plan will be “put into practice in a multi-current and consecutive way any moment” once leader Kim Jong Un makes a decision.

In another statement citing a different military spokesman, North Korea also said it could carry out a pre-emptive operation if the United States showed signs of provocation.

Much apology for my apparent senior moment.
I really wanted to write about the declaration of war on Japan. However, the many comments expressing the fear of how (almost easily) a nuclear war could start entered my fingers and out came FDR’s Depression speech which I did not hear as it was the year I was born. Sorry.

So what’s Trump gonna do now? He set his red line……”making threats against the US” and what does North Korea do; they promptly announce on their state media that they’re looking at plans to strike Guam.

Red line crossed.

I get where the desire to treat this lightly comes from but normalizing Trump is dangerous. The military absolutely will not defy a direct launch order if he gives it. If and when the time comes here is no safety net or fairy godmother in uniform that will intercede between his paranoid narcissistic lunacy and the continued existence of human civilization.

Normalise him, not me.

That takes us back to the National Command Authority again. Trump absolutely can give an order. Mattis can absolutely refuse it (that would likely result in his firing).

The military intelligence agencies know what the military situation is. It seems unlikely that the Defense Secretary would order the release of the weapons and the assured destruction of the USA (the same issue played out in the late stage of Nixon’s administration).

Well, we can’t say never; it did happen at least once in the Soviet Union (the Flotilla Commander aboard the Foxtrot class submarine B59 refused to countersign the ship Captain’s order to launch a nuclear armed torpedo during the Cuban Missile Crisis.) Yesterday in 1945, the DuMont Television Network first broadcast the news of the Hiroshima atom weapon bombing to the USA over its network. (I guess Trump was marking that anniversary.)

I wrote about DuMont a few years ago at the Great Orange Satan (Daily Kos). When DuMont was collapsing, it spun off its broadcast stations as Metromedia, which was purchased by Rupert Murdoch to become FOX News Channel.

Specifically, Article 2 of the treaty declares the two nations guarantee to adopt immediately all necessary measures to oppose any country or coalition of countries that might attack either nation.

The treaty is in effect and automatically renews every 20 years. It has renewed in 1981 and 2001. The most recent renewal will remain in effect until the year 2021.

I confess, I wasn’t aware of this treaty. That certainly ups the ante, to put it mildly.

As I recall, Alabama went through that with their tomato crop a couple years ago when they tried their version of Arizona’s “papers please” law. Tomato farmers wound up ploughing under a large portion of their crop.

theguardian.com

Quoting a farmer in the piece that lost a huge amount of money over that law:

Cash gets angry when people tell him that his Hispanic workforce was taking jobs away from Americans. Since the new law began two weeks ago only two American citizens have come by his farm asking for work.

The couple had driven two hours from a city to offer their services, but they barely lasted that long in the fields. Cash discovered that they were trying to fiddle him by notching up two baskets of tomatoes for every one they picked - as they were paid by the basket that would have fraudulently doubled their earnings.

“That’s just the kind of stuff you come across. Somebody who really wants a good job and is prepared to work hard and honest for it isn’t going to come up here for four months in the year.

Then what? This suddenly becomes yet another high-stakes game of nuclear chicken.

No, it just seems that treaties are tools of convenience.

For the most part. Sometimes they are honoured.

Of note, while Poland had its mutual defence treaty with the United Kingdom on the eve of WW2, though the UK could not stop the attack by Germany and the Soviet Union, that treaty is what caused the UK to declare war on Germany.

Our own entry into the Persian Gulf War on behalf of Kuwait was partially based on a treaty with that nation.

Quite often, yes, they are - I can’t disagree with that assertion.

But as always, the danger arises when leaders miscalculate the seriousness of a treaty. For instance, Trump could be thinking the Sino-North Korean Treaty could just be a scrap of paper; on the other hand, Kim Jong-un may well be thinking that China would fully honor their treaty obligations…..he acts the way he does because he thinks China’s got his back no matter what.

Trump - or Kim - could be guessing incorrectly with regard to the seriousness of treaties, with potentially lethal consequences for tens of millions. It wouldn’t be the first time in human history that’s happened……not by a damn sight.

Recall that we signed a disarmament treaty with Ukraine (which was left with the world’s fifth-largest nuclear arsenal with the dissolution of the USSR). In exchange for scrapping their nukes, we agreed to help maintain their territorial integrity.

Since we reneged on our end of the deal, should we not at least give them back their nuclear weapons?

Shropshire Slasher  Aug 9, 2017 • 4:29:07am

But but, President Obama targeted reporters too! A NY Times article from December 2016 and what President Trump seemingly is starting now.

Criticism of Mr. Obama’s stance on press freedom, government transparency and secrecy is hotly disputed by the White House, but many journalism groups say the record is clear. Over the past eight years, the administration has prosecuted nine cases involving whistle-blowers and leakers, compared with only three by all previous administrations combined. It has repeatedly used the Espionage Act, a relic of World War I-era red-baiting, not to prosecute spies but to go after government officials who talked to journalists.

snip

In an interview last May, President Obama pushed back on the criticism that his administration had been engaged in a war on the press. He argued that the number of leak prosecutions his administration had brought had been small and that some of those cases were inherited from the George W. Bush administration.

“I am a strong believer in the First Amendment and the need for journalists to pursue every lead and every angle,” Mr. Obama said in an interview with the Rutgers University student newspaper. “I think that when you hear stories about us cracking down on whistle-blowers or whatnot, we’re talking about a really small sample.

“Some of them are serious,” he continued, “where you had purposeful leaks of information that could harm or threaten operations or individuals who were in the field involved with really sensitive national security issues.”

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area.

At least the weather is nice enough so Trump can go golf for a couple of hours and not threaten nuclear holocausts that Tillerson has to walk back this morning (and lo and behold, that’s exactly what happened). Everything Trump says has to be walked back/apologized for/reinterpreted/massaged, because Trump’s a walking dumpster fire whose regressive reactionary nonsense is going to start World War III for no good reason except that his ego was bruised.

Trump’s busy tweeting this morning too, and the first thing out of his feed is a fucking lie (shocking, I know).

I’ve linked to this before, but this is an outline of the Obama nuclear modernization program, and it’s expected to cost more than $1 trillion dollars, and only a tiny fraction of that has been approved by Congress - because the Pentagon hasn’t even started spec’ing out the new bombers, missiles, subs, and other delivery systems to replace the existing triad.

Trump’s first EO was 13765, which was repeal/replace Obamacare, which was followed by a Keystone-related order. Nuclear modernization wasn’t part of the mix.

Once again, Trump’s lying and trying to take credit for his predecessor’s hard work.

A bully and all his bluster is once again exposed for what he is, and the world knows how to take advantage of him (and crossing his so-called red-lines) leaving him no where to go. Ah, I goofed on what his first EO was. He signed an inordinate amount those first few days.

In retrospect, those EOs were a tacit admission by Trump’s regime to the GOP leadership’s dysfunction to do anything beyond barely confirming his cabinet appointments, rubber stamping Gorsuck (and the equation would have been the same, regardless of the nutjob he nominated) and putting up multiple ACA repeal attempts that ultimately failed at the last minute… and Trump wasn’t going to help them.

And that heavy dysfunction by the GOP leadership is why he can act without the remote fear of being Amendment 25’ed.

CNBC analysis: Trump just set his own, uncrossable ‘red line’ — and North Korea crossed it instantly

It’s really sad when the possibility of Trump simply backing down (or failing to follow through) and allowing us to be humiliated on the world stage qualifies as a “best case scenario.”

There’s probably a Trump tweet that blasts President Obama for failing to follow through on the red line drawn on Syria because of course there would be.

Every statement - every tweet - shows just how dumb he is. He has spent 7 months trying to find enough sycophant friends - dumber than him - to staff his administration.

Perhaps it should be said - this is the President - America had to have. This should tell enough people that the GOP cannot govern and it is a LIE to say “anyone can be President”. We have to hope that those people survive his term in office.

“Then, on 9 August, the Washington Post ran a story noting that the home of Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign manager, had been the subject of a pre-dawn raid a couple of weeks earlier. In desperation, on 10 August, at 6:45 a.m. Eastern Time, President Trump ordered a nuclear strike on Pyongyang, the capital city of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.”

Federal raids target Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora, Cuyahoga County Auditor Frank Russo — Cleveland Plain Dealer, 28 July 2008

“FBI agents served at least 10 search warrants this morning at various Cuyahoga County offices and multiple residences as part of a public corruption investigation.

The public-corruption investigation that paralyzed Cuyahoga County government Monday unraveled the political and business ties of the county’s most powerful and colorful players: Commissioner Jimmy Dimora and Auditor Frank Russo.

The federal investigation centers on allegations that they traded jobs and contracts for thousands of dollars of free improvements to their homes and properties.

The investigation went public when nearly 200 agents from the FBI and IRS simultaneously raided county offices, businesses and homes at 9 a.m.

The operation was so broad that the FBI brought in agents from Pittsburgh and used three U-Haul trucks to take away cartons of documents and other items. Dimora and Russo, who have spent their political careers in the limelight, stayed out of sight all day and were not available for comment.”

I woke up today, glad that no one got nuked while I was asleep.

When I was in Japan earlier this year, I visited Hiroshima and wanted to visit Nagasaki, but time and money were running out. The four days I spent in Hiroshima were somewhat emotional, because I knew that the USA was responsible for the almost total destruction of the city, and the loss of hundred of thousands of lives. Now, you’d hardly know it, aside from the few remaining structures (and trees!) that survived the blast and firestorm. The atomic bomb museum pulls no punches, though.

Every US president should be required to visit the A-bomb museum as part of his/her on the job training. Reading books (as if Trump could) does not communicate the visceral emotions of seeing the after-effects of a A-bomb blast.

They probably have a similar scenario in the back of their addled minds - we drop a couple of nukes, Kim Jong-un says, “OK, fuck it, I quit” and that’s that.

Not even bearing in mind that the Nagasaki bombing coincided with the USSR’s declaration of war on the Japanese Empire and the Soviet invasion of Manchuria (IIRC on the latter one). That contributed to Hirohito’s decision to throw in the towel as well.

Just got back from the water tower with the village clerk, chairwoman, and several people from the USDA about our upcoming water meter project. Bad news is they won’t pay to fix our sampling station that’s broken, good news is they’ll go ahead with bids for the new water meters. (The current meters have lead and brass, both banned under clean water rules.)

The state called me just before I went, to complain I’d not done a routine monthly coliform sample. Something I didn’t know: doing eight special water samples does not count for doing one routine sample. They won’t arrest me this month. The state is aware our previous water operator died and left us with no instructions on how to do this, and we’re so isolated we can’t hire someone to come out here.

According to the article, the homeowners’ association attorney is claiming the purchasers (who bought the common areas: The streets, the sidewalks, parking, parks, &c) are simply exploiting the tax issue to make a buck. He also claims the city should have notified them and claims the city had a bad address for the association.

The city is claiming if that is true, the association should have known better.

I’m going to have to say that the lawsuit is probably a horrible idea executed on top of some serious long-term stupidity and negligence. They probably won’t win it given they’ve had three decades to change the address the tax bill was being sent to. It seems like a really good way to end up having to access your multimillion dollar homes via helicopter or fork over a hundred dollar bill to a deliberately insulting toll worker every time you want to touch the street or sidewalk.

Maybe not. The GOP put its weight behind Senator Strange, and Donald Trump endorsed him yesterday.

They are all theocratic wingnuts though, so it doesn’t really matter which one wins the primary. (If one does not take an absolute majority of the votes, their will be a run-off between the top two later. The best we can hope for here is they damage each other in the primary. Again, this is another one of those easily verifiable things that Fox simply wont do and counter Trump’s agitprop. Trump thinks that the US arsenal is stronger and more powerful? By size, it’s down from the 1980s peak level. By capabilities, it too is down from the peak if you look at warheads, overall throw weight (total megatonnage).

Trump’s just hyping his own nonsense and figures Fox will repeat without comment or checking. Trump’s right about that - Fox is an agitprop outlet that isn’t doing anything other than pushing Trump’s nonsense.

What Trump doesn’t get is that a powerful country doesn’t have to remind anyone of that fact. It just does what it has always done - not screwing over our allies, not ragging on our friends, and making sure that potential threats are contained. Trump’s overreaction to North Korea pulling Trump’s strings is entirely predictable and was intended to get the US to focus on North Korea so that the North can extract concessions. That’s the same game they’ve played for years. Trump’s left himself no room from here - threatening nuclear war doesn’t leave any way to reduce the tensions without looking like he’s been played.

This is a rookie mistake from the top negotiator Trump. Bully and bluster doesn’t work with a guy who knows all the games and has mastered them all.

So, Trump admin officials admit they were blindsided by Trump’s nonsensical ravings that push the nation to the brink of a nuclear war with North Korea and they didn’t have a clue what Trump would say/do.

Now, they’re also trying to walk it back, but they’re getting undercut by Trump and other staffers because the message isn’t consistent.

The walkback also undermines the very attempt at deterrence that was laughable from the start - there’s no where else to go if your first threat is nuclear war. You can’t escalate beyond that. If you don’t nuke, that shows your hand to be empty and you don’t have any other options.

Trump isn’t very good at any of this.

Wild episode. Don’t know if the dragon survives, but he’s certainly the crowd favorite.

The nukes ended the war with Japan because as far as they were aware we had an unlimited supply, and nobody else had any.

Even without the nukes, Japan’s strategic situation in 1945 was totally untenable. They had already lost the war.

The nukes persuaded Japan to surrender, which spared all parties the bloodbath of an invasion of Japan.

Deprived my friend of the chance to ride his Yard Minesweeper up to the landing craft line of departure and anchor there to act as a freakn’ marker buoy. He did that at Okinawa.
Did I mention he loves The Bomb?

That kind of puts the $20 that I’ve given through AmazonSmile in perspective…

(although I did donate to the national org after Trump got elected)

So Trump has his lawyer Jay Sekulow out twittering for him. What the hell does he know about foreign affairs?

Oh wait, he knows as much as Trump.

Sekulow, last I checked, is also under investigation for improperities with his griftapalooza disguised as a Christian NPO.

Well, Law and Order, Trump edition.

You don’t get a search warrant unless you have reasonable suspicion of a crime, and evidence for it may be found at the place searched.

“Mr. Manafort, we have X, Y, and Z showing (whatever crime). We can put in a good word with the prosecutor so you don’t spend thirty years in Club Fed if you give up the goods on (so-and-so).”

Very much like taking out a criminal organisation. Grab someone low on the totem pole, and flip them for someone higher, rinse and repeat.

If this whole regime comes out big enough and totally burned, we might get a generation or so where corruption becomes unfashionable again. Ever the optimist.

The Japanese surrender also spared China, Korea and Indonesia a continuing bloodbath from the Japanese forces that were then rampaging.

I believe it also spared everyone from Russian involvement in the Pacific war.
