NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert: The Shins

It’s actually not the whole band, but just one Shin, songwriter/singer James Mercer, performing solo with an acoustic guitar and doing an amazing job.

Bob Boilen | July 24, 2017 — The Shins have been a constant part of NPR’s musical DNA for much of the 21st century. The group’s poetic pop has shown up in something like 25 stories on our website, not just because many of us are longtime fans, but also because our listeners love them. Stories on our site include: The Best CDs of 2003: Listeners’ Picks, The Shins In Concert from 2012, Song Premiere: The Shins And Zach Braff Reunite, a recent interview on All Things Considered and so many more. It’s remarkable that there’s never been a Tiny Desk Concert from The Shins until now.

In celebration of the band’s fifth studio album, 2017’s Heartworms, singer and guitarist James Mercer, the emotional and creative center of The Shins, came to NPR to perform a handful of songs that included two new tracks and one that reached back to 2003 from the album Chutes Too Narrow. It’s a moving performance with just James on guitar, no band, no amplification - simple and perfect.

Trump’s already stuck his neck out too far - not long after he issues that ultimatum, DPRK state media reports they’re looking at plans for attacking Guam.

North Korea said on Wednesday it is “carefully examining” a plan to strike the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam with missiles, just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump told the North that any threat to the United States would be met with “fire and fury”.

A spokesman for the Korean People’s Army, in a statement carried by the North’s state-run KCNA news agency, said the strike plan will be “put into practice in a multi-current and consecutive way any moment” once leader Kim Jong Un makes a decision.

In another statement citing a different military spokesman, North Korea also said it could carry out a pre-emptive operation if the United States showed signs of provocation.

Watched it and vaguely remember it from perhaps long ago.

It’s one of those morality plays from the ‘50’s, about war and such. Sort of hokey but also not without merit. Typical 1950’s stereotypes at play.

As I recall, Alabama went through that with their tomato crop a couple years ago when they tried their version of Arizona’s “papers please” law. Tomato farmers wound up ploughing under a large portion of their crop.

I’ve linked to this before, but this is an outline of the Obama nuclear modernization program, and it’s expected to cost more than $1 trillion dollars, and only a tiny fraction of that has been approved by Congress - because the Pentagon hasn’t even started spec’ing out the new bombers, missiles, subs, and other delivery systems to replace the existing triad.

Trump’s first EO was 13765, which was repeal/replace Obamacare, which was followed by a Keystone-related order. Nuclear modernization wasn’t part of the mix.

Once again, Trump’s lying and trying to take credit for his predecessor’s hard work.

A bully and all his bluster is once again exposed for what he is, and the world knows how to take advantage of him (and crossing his so-called red-lines) leaving him no where to go. All that’s left is threatening a nuclear holocaust and he’s unstable enough to push the button dooming tens of millions of people to death, mayhem, and chaos.

I have to tell myself that I don’t have to run any more marathons or any races at all, just have to get out and do it for myself.

I woke up today, glad that no one got nuked while I was asleep.

When I was in Japan earlier this year, I visited Hiroshima and wanted to visit Nagasaki, but time and money were running out. The four days I spent in Hiroshima were somewhat emotional, because I knew that the USA was responsible for the almost total destruction of the city, and the loss of hundred of thousands of lives. Now, you’d hardly know it, aside from the few remaining structures (and trees!) that survived the blast and firestorm. The atomic bomb museum pulls no punches, though.

Every US president should be required to visit the A-bomb museum as part of his/her on the job training. Reading books (as if Trump could) does not communicate the visceral emotions of seeing the after-effects of a A-bomb blast.

Just got back from the water tower with the village clerk, chairwoman, and several people from the USDA about our upcoming water meter project. Bad news is they won’t pay to fix our sampling station that’s broken, good news is they’ll go ahead with bids for the new water meters. (The current meters have lead and brass, both banned under clean water rules.)

The state called me just before I went, to complain I’d not done a routine monthly coliform sample. Something I didn’t know: doing eight special water samples does not count for doing one routine sample. They won’t arrest me this month. The state is aware our previous water operator died and left us with no instructions on how to do this, and we’re so isolated we can’t hire someone to come out here.

(I wonder what possessed me to volunteer for this job.)

Trump’s just hyping his own nonsense and figures Fox will repeat without comment or checking. Trump’s right about that - Fox is an agitprop outlet that isn’t doing anything other than pushing Trump’s nonsense.

What Trump doesn’t get is that a powerful country doesn’t have to remind anyone of that fact. It just does what it has always done - not screwing over our allies, not ragging on our friends, and making sure that potential threats are contained. Trump’s overreaction to North Korea pulling Trump’s strings is entirely predictable and was intended to get the US to focus on North Korea so that the North can extract concessions. That’s the same game they’ve played for years. Trump’s left himself no room from here - threatening nuclear war doesn’t leave any way to reduce the tensions without looking like he’s been played.

This is a rookie mistake from the top negotiator Trump. Bully and bluster doesn’t work with a guy who knows all the games and has mastered them all.

My guess is John McCain was not suffering from diminished capacity, but an overabundance of desire to cram Mitch McConnell’ bill so far in the dark it couldn’t find its way out with a guide and a flashlight.

There are many things I dislike about Senator McCain’s politics (not the least of which is the Tundra Grifter), but he consistently argues for the norms and rules of the Senate.

He also had a personal score to settle with Trump and was just biding his time waiting to get his own…he could have voted against the motion to proceed, but it was more of a fail for Trump to move it forward and then let it go down in flames on the vote.

So, Trump admin officials admit they were blindsided by Trump’s nonsensical ravings that push the nation to the brink of a nuclear war with North Korea and they didn’t have a clue what Trump would say/do.

Now, they’re also trying to walk it back, but they’re getting undercut by Trump and other staffers because the message isn’t consistent.

The walkback also undermines the very attempt at deterrence that was laughable from the start - there’s no where else to go if your first threat is nuclear war. You can’t escalate beyond that. If you don’t nuke, that shows your hand to be empty and you don’t have any other options.

Trump isn’t very good at any of this.

Well, Law and Order, Trump edition.

You don’t get a search warrant unless you have reasonable suspicion of a crime, and evidence for it may be found at the place searched.

“Mr. Manafort, we have X, Y, and Z showing (whatever crime). We can put in a good word with the prosecutor so you don’t spend thirty years in Club Fed if you give up the goods on (so-and-so).”

Very much like taking out a criminal organisation. Grab someone low on the totem pole, and flip them for someone higher, rinse and repeat.
