Nuclear posturing is becoming far more in vogue than it was just months ago, and it’s not just a foreign phenomenon. NATO just wrapped up a major nuclear exercise, which was clearly aimed at Russia whether they admit it or not. The Pentagon has also becoming far more cavalier when it comes to discussing, if not outright showcasing, its own nuclear capabilities and readiness in recent months. This attitude shift has even spilled over into social media.
With the relationship between the U.S. and Russia at an all time low and a potential conflict with North Korea brewing, not to mention a White House that seems far more casual about nuclear weaponry than past administrations and billions being funneled into new American nuclear weaponry, this “new normal” is likely to get even more pronounced, not less. Even China is becoming more inclined to brandish its strategic weaponry as of late.
But these drills, which likely were an “end to end” test of Russia’s nuclear weapons apparatus, including the complex command and control network that goes along with it, was an especially ominous display.
Now we’ll have to wait to see how Washington reacts.

It’s natural for computer programmers to try to fix social problems with programs. It’s what we know. It could even work to make the job easier for people if done right.
For example, Facebook could do an automated search of the banner pictures that their users selected, and flag anything with a swastika for human review. They could ban most of the Nazis in a week easily that way. They could do the same with hate speech. There’s no reason to wait for users to flag problem content, when the system could easily do it with existing technology and a small staff to review the output of the automated process.

But then you have the cases of…well, there are Nazi accounts that are actually actively restricted and blocked in France and Germany because of the laws there. THey’re identified and there’s an algorithm that marks these people to be blocked. But then you have the flip where many are outright verified and given 280 anyhow. They already have the code to take care of this in many ways. They’re not only purposefully not using it unless demanded so by a national law, but they’re again actively catering to these folks. It’s not a matter of faulty coding or failure to game out the long-term results. There are active supporters on the meatspace side of things singling these assholes out to support them. This is beyond libertarian ‘live and let live’ faux idealism. This is prominent people in the company being fellow travelers.

That rambling and repetitive speech was similar to my what my mom had in her early stages. She went downhill fast, to say the least. In two years from diagnosis, she was no longer able to speak. About 10 months after that, she became incontinent and required hospice care.
And not long after that, she passed away.
I can’t remember the name of the disease - it wasn’t Alzheimer’s, but something else and it was particularly aggressive and fast.

We tend to elect men in their 50s for the job (25 presidents were in their 50s when they took office). Even if you hold it to the “modern” presidency (post FDR), it’s been mostly mid-50s, early-60s with Kennedy, Clinton, and Obama bringing down the average.
I don’t think the issue with Trump is particularly his age, it’s everything else. Hell, Hillary Clinton is only 15 months or so younger than Trump.

Probably; the whole Catalan separatism process doesn’t sound very well thought out. They had been waffling back and forth for weeks about whether they were actually separating or not, and only declared independence when it was obvious that Spain was going to dissolve the Catalan government in a couple of hours.
This wasn’t a poor, oppressed minority trying to escape the boot of an oppressive central government. Catalan is a wealthy state, and separatism was being pushed by fairly well-off people, mostly in non-urban areas, who got decades of stories about how they were superior to the Spanish and didn’t want to pay for all those poor people in Bilbao and Madrid to sit around doing nothing. Also, the Russian trolls have been pushing the separatist movement in social media, and the Russian government has been openly supporting the separatists. If this is starting to sound familiar, um, yeah.

2) Staging: you have done this so many times now it almost automatic.

A few years ago, we had an icestorm roll through here; that’s quite rare, thankfully. I’ve had some experience with freezing rain from having lived in the Portland, OR area for about 20 years. You walk nice and slow…..real slow. It took me 15 minutes to walk to the tram from the school; it usually takes me two minutes. I warned a co-worker of mine to walk very carefully….of course, she came out of the school a few minutes after me and promptly fell on her ass.
There were a lot of broken bones - the ER’s here were hopping. And car accidents galore.
I literally caught the last tram home from the city center (that’s about 8 km from where I live). No sooner did I get finally get home and checked out the news on the web, it was just being announced that public transportation throughout the entire Czech Republic had been stopped on order of the Ministry of Transport, with the singular exception of the subway system in Prague.
