Ari Melber did an interesting piece toward the end of his show. It was about how Russia doesn’t care who knows and they might have wanted to be caught.
The reasoning: it shows Putin’s power and how he can influence the world’s political systems.
He wants to prove how vulnerable a democracy is because it is based on trust instead of a strong smart man like Putin. If he knows these systems so well, think how great a leader he is.
It was pretty thought provoking and a slant I had never considered. It goes to your worry about Mueller. He may be doing exactly what Putin wants.
If the video gets posted I’ll put it up for those without MSNBC coverage.

ESPN - Papa John’s, NFL make ‘mutual decision’ to end sponsorship deal
Some bits from the article:
Papa John’s is no longer the official pizza of the NFL.
CEO Steve Ritchie said on the company’s earnings conference call that the league and the company mutually decided it was in their best interests for Papa John’s, which became the official pizza of the league in 2010, to give up the designation.
The brand is the first NFL sponsor to leave in the midst of its deal. The company said on the call that there was no additional cost for undoing the deal.
“The NFL and Papa John’s have made a mutual decision to shift from their official league sponsorship to a focus on partnerships with 22 local NFL teams, presence in broadcast and digital media, and key personalities in the sport,” the league and company said in a joint statement.
…
It was nearly four months ago that Papa John’s founder John Schnatter, then also the CEO, said players who staged protests during the national anthem hurt business. The company pulled the NFL shield off its commercials during game broadcasts and took the shield off its pizza boxes.
“We are disappointed the NFL and its leadership did not resolve this,” Schnatter said at the time.
Twelve days later, after the company’s stock had dropped 12 percent, Schnatter apologized for his comments.
Schnatter, who was the face of the brand, was later replaced as CEO on Jan. 1. The company’s chief financial officer, Lance Tucker, will leave after this week to become CFO at Jack in the Box.

I remember when this happened. When the bill was being written, right-wingers were all for it because they were 100% sure undocumented immigrants were to blame for “taking their jobs [and everything else] from them.” After Deal signed the bill into law, migrant workers fled the state, crops began to rot in the fields, and Deal got the “great” idea to hire probationers to replace the migrant workers, and guess what happened? Many of the probationers who decided to take the jobs quit before noon on the first day on the job or quit before the end of the first week on the job because the work was just too hard. Since this happened, I haven’t heard much from the anti-immigration tools. This was one time that they got what they asked for and paid dearly for it.

Honestly, we used to get it a lot back in fish country before I moved out, and I would call it “okay”. Domino’s and Pizza Hut both reinvented their crust options and flavors and I find them to be tastier than Papa John’s, which is still essentially a piece of cardboard with some decent cheese and toppings.

“Ben Carson’s HUD, Planning Cuts, Spends $31,000 on Dining Set for His Office
By GLENN THRUSH FEB. 27, 2018
WASHINGTON — Department of Housing and Urban Development officials spent $31,000 on a new dining room set for Secretary Ben Carson’s office in late 2017 — just as the White House circulated its plans to slash HUD’s programs for the homeless, elderly and poor, according to federal procurement records.
The purchase of the custom hardwood table, chairs and hutch came a month after a top agency staff member filed a whistle-blower complaint charging Mr. Carson’s wife, Candy Carson, with pressuring department officials to find money for the expensive redecoration of his offices, even if it meant circumventing the law.
Mr. Carson is also facing questions on another front. Under pressure earlier this month, he requested that HUD’s inspector general investigate his son’s involvement in a department-sponsored listening tour of Baltimore last summer. Department lawyers had warned Mr. Carson that including Ben Carson Jr., an entrepreneur who does business with the federal government, could create a conflict of interest.
Mr. Carson “didn’t know the table had been purchased,” but does not believe the cost was too steep and does not intend to return it, said Raffi Williams, a HUD spokesman.
“In general, the secretary does want to be as fiscally prudent as possible with the taxpayers’ money,” he added.”

On top of the emoluments. On top of Trump-Russia. On top of all of it, we’ve got the fact that Trump keeps picking the absolute worst people for roles that they are spectacularly unqualified to handle. That’s from the top on down and includes judicial nominees. That’s a lasting effect that will affect the trajectory of judicial decisions for decades to come.
The fact that Kushner is still part of this admin despite losing clearance is a huge scandal in its own right. Kushner’s a hub of scandal that would otherwise take down a presidency.

Remember Trump’s wedding planner he hired to work at HUD? And the whistleblower at HUD who kept reporting attempts to fire civil servants who are Democrats in violation of the law? About all that, The Guardian reports on all that and Wonkette snarks heavily on fiscal conservatism grifting:

“Closer Look” is posted on YouTube *before* airtime, at least where I’m at.
So, imagine this. You are teaching a third grade class and hear BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG (etc.) coming from down the hall. The local school district has provided you with a 9 mm pistol and minimal training, compared to any LEO.
You have two choices. You can lock the door, and put a chair underneath the doorknob and get you 30 students into a closet and hide. If the shooter gets into your room, you can take a last gasp shot at him (it’s always a him) and he will probably kill you and then the kids, but at least you tried. Or, he will simply walk past the barricaded door and look for a softer target, and your gun will not have cleared leather.
Or, you can bravely open the door and get into a shooting match with a gunman with a rifle while you have a pistol. Which you are most likely going to lose. You haven’t locked the door, it’s open behind you. You haven’t put the chair under the door, and you haven’t shoved your kids into a closet. They are, in fact, easy targets now that you are incapacitated or dead.
Gee? Which would I choose?
The point, of course, being that even arming teachers will not make them do something that would, odds on, be more likely to result in their kids being killed.

Think Progress claims to have a memo, given to it by an employee, showing why FedEx isn’t willing to reverse their decision to give discounts to NRA members. The short of it goes like this. The USPS rarely ships guns. UPS requires them to be shipped overnight, so they’re not in their system very long. FedEx claims they do the same thing, but, according to the memo, they offer two or three day shipping to certain groups. It makes shipping cheaper, which means they’re getting more shipping traffic.

I don’t think they have the ability to hack actual elections, though the thought of them playing with voter rolls is very disturbing. They do have the ability to screw with people’s heads, but I think that will have less of an impact this time than 2016. We will have to be prepared. I left upgrade training at Castle AFB and went to K. I. Siberia (oops, Sawyer) AFB in the spring of ‘80. In ‘81 Reagan pushed through a massive increase in military spending. The problem was, it had to be spent by October 31, 1981, and there were not enough weapons systems in the pipeline to come anywhere near to absorbing the cost.
It was a puzzlement! What to do? The money had to be spent or it would look really bad.
So, we got new alert trucks. Everything on base was painted. Every piece of furniture was replaced (even if it was brand new). Typewriters. Fencing. New guns for the guards. New guns for the air crews (.38’s which may have had 30 rounds put through them were tossed). New arctic gear. New tires and spares for the planes. New engine starters and heat huffers for the planes. New Oshkosh snow blowers for the runway. Somehow we spent enough useless dollars to meet our allotment.

In my old office, the managers would go around and see if anyone needed anything they could get out of the budget before the end of the fiscal year — a second monitor, replacement keyboard, or new desk chairs. I remember one year, we bought a coat rack, because we didn’t have one, and no one wanted to drape a wet coat over the back of their chair.

My agency, like all other Fed agencies, had to spend or obligate all their funds by the end of the Fiscal Year. I always maintained a wish list of extra items my staff and I could use if there were any extra funds. The biggest item I purchased was a 60” color plotter for producing maps. That thing wound up being used almost daily so it was a good investment.
Being a Fed it was always difficult to do any meaning-full budgeting and planning. First of all, the continuing resolution process got you into the middle of the FY before you got your final budget. Then you wound up with 6 months to complete all your targets.

I occasionally read the Casper Star-Tribune. They do good work reporting on Wyoming government and the usual conseva-grifting that goes on in the GOP there, as well as occasional reporting about my area.

At least in Alaska they can put Young out on an ice floe at some point, no?
Unfortunately he’ll be there until he croaks. He does seem to suffer from one of the “Old Timers” diseases. Hopefully, this year a good Dem could knock him out. (Wish-full thinking.)

Yup, we would get the same thing in the Navy: You have to spend the money allotted to you by the end of the fiscal year, or it would look bad and they would reduce our budget.
Jesus Christ, these first-world problems. When I was working for a state university in Louisiana, which is very distant from the first world, we never had to worry about spending money by the end of the fiscal year. It had pretty much run out three months earlier and we had been running crawfish boils to scrape enough change for the electric.

The incredible career of Hope Hicks
Ivanka Trump ultimately poached Hicks in 2014, hiring her to work on her namesake lifestyle brand. GQ reported the two became close, with Hicks even “dressing like the heiress.” Ivanka Trump later told The New York Times Hicks also went on to earn her father’s trust.

In retrospect, I should not have left the paper when I did, especially as the next employer turned out to be a nutcase. (Talk about poor career choices.) The CST did a pretty good job of fairly covering the news. We chased down a corrupt energy deal while I was there, teaming up with the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, which earned me a threatening phone call from the boss of the company involved. I also covered a train wreck in Hanna (?) and a murder trial, and ventured on to the Wind River Res, where few reporters had previously visited.
Who’s the Cheyenne bureau chief now? While I was there, it was a woman named Bannon — memory fails me now. She was sharp and had a lot of connections in state government.

Presumably she meant a paper coffee cup. There are honorable ceramic coffee cups in diners all over America that are older than anybody I know.

I’d forgotten she was an Ivanka hanger-on. Seriously, though, she seems intelligent enough — and is certainly good-looking enough — to have found work with a more reputable bunch of people. She made some bad decisions to end up where she is now. Still, I’m not going to cry for her. Too bad, so sad.
Trump is learning why it is a real bad idea to baselessly trash the intelligence community. IC has now blocked Jared, and leaked the story of foreign governments planning to manipulate him. My wife just got an E-mail from some organisation in Florida claiming the “anti-gun left” is trying to pass legislation in Florida to take law-abiding citizens’ guns, urging her to call her state legislator.
She’s reading this E-mail to me, and goodness, the fearmongering in this thing is so over-the-top it’s almost as bad as that clip of Ted Cruz in high school “Why are you persecuting me?”
The organisation which wants guns everywhere in Florida apparently doesn’t know Nebraska is not a Florida county.

It would appear to be a fellow named Scott Gillespie.
Scott has been editorial page editor since 2007 and has overall responsibility for the Editorial Department. He was the lead editor on “Separate and Unequal,” the series of editorials on underfunded Bureau of Indian Education schools that was a finalist for a 2015 Pulitzer Prize.
Before joining Editorial, Scott was managing editor at the Star Tribune, responsible for the day-to-day operations of the newsroom. During his five-year tenure in that role, the news staff produced awarding-winning coverage on the death of Paul Wellstone, the war in Iraq and the collapse of the I-35W Bridge. Before being named managing editor, Gillespie served as the paper’s assistant managing editor for local news and assistant managing editor for business news. He has more than 30 years of news reporting and editing experience at newspapers in Wisconsin and Minnesota. He served as a Pulitzer Prize juror in 2004, 2005, 2011 and 2012. Gillespie has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and political science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has been an adjunct faculty member in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota. He lives in St. Paul with his family.

It’s shit pizza. Sauce is sweet, crust is chewy and greasy. Reminds me of the ole Chef Boyardee pizza in a box, except it tastes worse and costs about 10x what pizza in the box costs.
Mom knew how to doctor up Chef Boyardee’s pizza kit by adding oregano, fines herbs, and topping it with thin mozzarella slices. Every bite into that melted mozzarella topped masterpiece and my taste buds reacted with a standing ovation…

They all share the same disregard for national loyalty. For all his BS about “America First” and MAGA, Trump’s only real motivation is to enrich himself at the expense of the USA. Remember, this is his MO — whatever he most accuses others of doing, he does himself. The Kushners have sold out to the Chinese, Trump to the Russians, and who knows how the Saudis are involved. This administration may singlehandedly destroy the USA by parcelling it out to foreign powers and foreign influence.

Gaa, on another forum I’m having again to knock down the conservative lie that Obama had total control of Congress for two years, why didn’t the Dems propose any gun legislation if they are so concerned about it?
Aside from the fact that there was never “total control of Congress” there was legislation proposed. The R’s were busy obstructing everything to make President Obama a “one-term president.”
The actual timeline of control of Congress is here:
ohio.com
(Akron Beacon-Journal, explaining the numbers of seats controlled by each party in 2009-2010 and why the claim is a lie.)
All you have to do is assert things often enough to a conservative and it becomes an article of faith to them, and no evidence to the contrary shakes that faith.
It is why I call conservatism a religion. The phrase “Conservatism can’t fail, it can only be failed” is strikingly similar to the phrase “All people fall short of the glory of God.”
