Several friends went to Canter’s Deli after we finished the RAZZIE show. We’re seated and ordering our food. Bernie is at a table with a couple folks I think Don Adams was there with them and they were cracking jokes with each other. We couldn’t stop laughing. The president of Belarus has said the country is ready to unite with long-time ally Russia, raising the prospect of Moscow absorbing the eastern European dictatorship on the borders of Poland and Lithuania.
President Alexander Lukashenko, who has ruled the former Soviet state since the presidential post was created in 1994, said Friday his nation was ready to join with Russia, The Moscow Times reported.
Lukashenko made the comments on the third and final day of bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Rumors have long abounded that Belarus could be absorbed into Russia under Putin’s watch, deepening the “union state” arrangement that has existed between them since the late 1990s.
“The two of us could unite tomorrow, no problem,” Lukashenko said Friday. “But are you—Russians and Belarusians—ready for it?” the president added, according to Interfax. “We’re ready to unite and consolidate our efforts, states and peoples as far as we’re ready.”
But here’s the important thing to notice:
Putin’s presidential term will end in 2024, and the current constitution prevents him for running again. It has been suggested that he could bypass these restrictions by creating a new nation through a union with Belarus.
The president voiced his support for the idea as long ago as 2011, when he said a union was “possible, desirable and wholly dependent on the will of the Belarusian people.”

I’m half way through the first episode of the 2019 series Project Blue Book, and while the producers appear to have attempted to make a serious and decent show (it gets decent ratings on IMDB), I’m finding my interest lacking.
It’s all been done before.
And more to the point, the entire genre now seems OBE.
I remember when this story popped up last fall: What is behind the decline in UFO sightings?
And it’s not just UFOs - there is a decline in BigFoot alleged visual evidence, fewer ghost stories, etc.
The Guardian article mentions the ready accessibility of high quality video recording as one reason for the decline. That is probably so.
But I think there is another factor at work here.
The rise of the “nones” is making society less superstitious.

My biggest worry is that all of the other credible candidates split the none-Bernie vote, and the Bernie vote is a large enough slice that, like Trump, he ends up with the nomination. Though with the Democrats system of proportional distribution of delegates, he may not be able to. However that leads to the problem that if he goes to the convention with the largest batch of delegates, even though less than a majority, and loses in a second round of balloting to a more mainstream candidate with the support of superdelegates, the Berniebros become enraged and work to undermine the nominee. So lets hope Bernie doesn’t do well in the early primaries and the Democrats rally around one or two of the other contenders.

I don’t know how many of you watched this last season of Doctor Who. I suspect that those who did, like a lot of people, thought the writing was subpar for most of the episodes, except the Rosa Parks episode. Here’s the big thing I like about this season. Making the character a woman, they could have written the Dame Judi Dench version of the character - prim, upright, rigid, unsmiling (not a characterization of the actress, but the roles she gets) - but they didn’t. The 13th Doctor makes a whole lot of mistakes, and some of them nearly cost people their lives. A character died in the first episode being the type of person we think the Doctor is. The point being, they didn’t change the Doctor to make it safer for the first one that’s a woman. And I think that was a great choice and a great choice for women.

I understand, and if I could talk to any of the candidates, I would have them make it a part of their candidacy. I would spread among the other candidates, and, with Trump, it is a legitimate political issue.

An interesting development regarding Venezuela. Maybe Putin has decided to throw Maduro under the bus.
Russian lender Gazprombank has decided to freeze the accounts of Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA and halted transactions with the firm to reduce the risk of the bank falling under U.S. sanctions, a Gazprombank source told Reuters on Sunday.
While many foreign firms have been cutting their exposure to PDVSA since the sanctions were imposed, the fact that a lender closely aligned with the Russian state is following suit is significant because the Kremlin has been among Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s staunchest supporters.
“PDVSA’s accounts are currently frozen. As you’ll understand, operations cannot be carried out,” the source said. Gazprombank did not reply to a Reuters request for a comment.

I’m not saying Wohl has a genuine insight, but what he says is unintentionally revelatory about how people like himself view the USA.
Wohl and people like him are selling a version of America that functions like a brand: fostering loyalty and emotional attachment by evoking sentimentality, to the end of capturing consumers. Anyone with an idea has to “sell” it with rhetoric, and anyone with a public image ends up creating a personal “brand”…but what makes this situation so bad right now—and why there are so many Jacob Wohls—is that this is about the profit motive.
The consumers of the Wohl (…Gingrich..Limbaugh…Trump…FNC…) version of America-as-brand are the same people that consume Christianity-as-a-brand and Whiteness-as-a-brand: that engaging on a shallow, emotional level; people that value symbols without understanding what is symbolized; people that want the general good feeling of belonging. But, I’d argue, more than anything else they’re purchasing license: if conservatives are selling identity as a product, then the value of that product is the promise that you’re better—smarter, more spiritual pure, stronger, entitled—by virtue of your brand engagement.
It’s not just that politics has turned into sport fandom, it’s that politics has turned into the equivalent of the very wealthy institutions fostering and milking team loyal to sell more merch and tickets, even knowing that the fandom is creating hooligans.

A West Virginia woman who previously called our forever First Lady Michelle Obama “an ape in heels” has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $18,000 in FEMA disaster benefits after the devastating June 2016 floods that claimed lives and significant property, U.S. Attorney Mike Stuart’s Office says.
Pamela Taylor admitted in court that she took more than $18,000 in flood relief benefits by falsely registering for FEMA benefits after the June 2016 floods that killed more than 20 West Virginians, WSAZ-3 reports.
Taylor lied that her primary residence had been damaged in the flood and that she was forced to rent a place to stay. But it was all a lie and she was still living in her primary residence.
It was just over two years ago that she resigned from her county government development job for coming after Obama in a Facebook post soon after President Donald Trump took office. But she was secretly rehired only weeks later.
In her plea agreement, Taylor agreed to pay restitution of $18,149.04. She faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $500,000 when she is sentenced on May 30.

They attach themselves to concepts with deep cultural implications and strong emotions in an opportunistic way, and re-juggle what concepts they appropriate trying to anticipate appeal. “Protecting” the brand means trimming what decreases engagement and emphasizing what increases engagement.
Which, I think explains the current split over Trumpism. If you look at the president as an advertising strategy rather than a ideologue, the picture of what’s happening in conservative power groups makes sense: they’re trying to gauge whether it’s a winning formula to present in that way, to “sell” their brand, and it’s a completely separate calculation from what they actually believe in and what they will use power to do.
Hence the number of Never Trumpers who criticize him only at the aesthetic level: they’re mad because they view his crassness as decreasing engagement and his policy gaffes as cheapening the brand. And in turn, we’ve been watching individual politicians make a choice about backing the new brand image (90s EXTREME packaging) or cleaving to the old one…purely as a marketing decision.
* unless there is a robust internal culture that has agreed that there are priorities beyond greater efficiency and greater market share…which is pretty damn rare.

Actually, one of my friends has had many a Retriever, both Labs and Goldens… She has related how she one New Years Eve told a couple of kids not to throw firecrackers when dogs were around, as it scares them and makes them unpredictable, only to have the kids defiantly throw them around dogs anyway. She told me the ‘hood was quieter after that for some unknown reason… And as I knew both the late R**** and E*****, I know that they might get grumpy if you don’t pet them, but that what’d most likely happen is that they’d occupy any miscreant by demanding scritches etc., and thus get caught that way.
I still miss them, and E*****’s brother, B**/R****. Dogsat them on many occasion, so I know full well they were the sweetest dogs around, and what the most dangerous body part of any Retriever is.

I remember first grade in 1961 where we had a Jehovah’s Witness in our class who refused to salute the flag and she was sent out in the hall while it was done. Well, maybe if she was in FloriDUH they would have locked her up for the rest of her life…

A spokeswoman with the school district said students aren’t required to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance, but the substitute teacher wasn’t aware of this. The spokeswoman said the substitute teacher will no longer be able to work at any of the district’s schools and the district is still looking into the matter.

Good that the substitute teacher is barred from district schools but I hope the child’s criminal record is expunged. He did absolutely nothing wrong. I’m sick and tired of hearing about forced patriotism in what is supposed to be a democratic country.

This should be a no brainer, and the courts should slap this down hard. But, any pretense of an independent Judicial Branch is being replaced by the Federalist Society.

His record expunged, a public apology, and a monetary settlement for pain and suffering. The sub was an employee of the school district at the time of the incident, and the school district is ultimately responsible for a subs actions.

The only “emergency” in the eyes of the GOP is Donny losing reelection. If fucking over the country for generations to come helps him win, then the GOP is prepared for the American people to make that sacrifice.

I’d just point out that the handbook used by the school district is wrong in one respect. The right to refuse to pledge the flag does not reside with the child’s parents, but with the child themselves. Thankfully this child’s mother supports him, but I’m sure there are incidents out there where the child refuses to salute and their parents decide to whip them (oh, by the way, still perfectly legal in our country). But the right to refuse is with the child.
If I wasn’t diabetic, I’d have this from Justice Jackson’s West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette opinion tattooed on me:
If there is any fixed star in our constitutional constellation, it is that no official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion or force citizens to confess by word or act their faith therein.

Not all of Florida is that crazy. This incident took place in one of the more rural areas.
