The entirety of this hearing is damning indictment of the GOP, desperate to protect a corrupt Trump.

It’s as though if they did anything resembling lip service to the facts or logic or the law, they’d be duty bound to impeach and remove Trump. Therefore, they are doing everything possible to avoid the facts or the law.

*Disclaimer of having not read the previous thread, with apologies as needed*

I listened to the whole Judiciary Committee hearing on NPR. I almost left in the middle, but I’m glad I listened to the end because hearing Veronica Escobar at the end, having been saved for an important position, made me very happy.

Well, first, it’s not a trial. Second, there is no “direct” or “cross-examination”.

And 3d - Rudy’s making a good point about trial advocacy, but not in way he hoped.

You advocate for your client on the facts.
You advocate for your client on the law.
When you don’t have those, you’re left resorting to pounding on the table.

What Trumpworld, the GOP, and Rudy are doing are not only pounding on the table, but pushing conspiracy theories to create a self-pounding table, because they’re so up to their eyeballs in wrongdoing.

re: #11 Charles Johnson

All sorts of wingnuts are crowing victory because Mr. Mueller isn’t answering GOP questions about Fusion GPS (which had nothing to do with his report).

The GOP representatives are simply playing to their base. They are not interested in ascertaining truth.

Fortunately, when Democrats turn out to vote, they win. The goal has to be ignore the ignorati and focus on Dems and indys who didn’t vote last time.

“It is not a witch hunt.” I can almost be happy with this.

It wasn’t a witch hunt. We didn’t catch witches.

We caught: Papadopoulos, Flynn, Manafort, Gates, and a shit-ton of Russian agents and operatives engaging in multiple federal felonies.

Trump engaged in multiple felonies to cover up his role in all this. That coverup precludes further conclusions by Mueller of Trump crimes.

This is great material for a course on trial advocacy. Dems on direct are being allowed to lead and Lap Dog says yes. Repubs on cross impeach him, befuddle him and generally demonstrate he had no interest in pursuing truth…”not in my purview.”

Now the wingnuts are shifting their narrative from “Mueller is obviously ill” to “Mueller obviously didn’t write the report.”

That sort of talking point narrative is not the sort of talk which comes from people who are certain of their position (otherwise they would point to how Mueller clears Trump and show that evidence).

All they have is obfuscation.

Look, my fellow Democrats, these Mueller hearings have made clear Trump is going to need to win re-election to stay out of jail.

He’s not going to lose quietly or gracefully, and he will run a scorched earth campaign.

Prepare accordingly.

as i said last thread:

a good Dem argument may be:
- Don’t impeach, IMPRISON
- Don’t spend the time impeaching, spend it campaigning
Vote him out and:
- We’ll censure him for history - ie forever
- And we’ll have power to pass laws, get judges, and prosecute

Buffet restaurants here bring drinks, clear dishes, bring food not available at the buffet. My wife and I leave tips in those restaurants.

Optics are crucial for setting up impeachment. You can wish it were otherwise, but that is the lay of the land and IMHO today set the cause back rather than advancing it. Mueller doesn’t want to be there, doesn’t want to answer questions and he made that as obvious as a tumor on your forehead. Everybody on Twitter yelling at me that I shouldn’t expect a showdog can fuck off. I don’t want or need a showdog. I need someone who WANTS to clarify what happened and help everybody understand.

The President* Is a Crook and Everyone in Congress Knows It (Esquire)

Robert Mueller wasn’t Richard Pryor at the mic, but he confirmed it in his own way.

WASHINGTON—Rep. Matt Gaetz, Republican of Florida, Nuisance of the Nation, was gaggling outside the chambers of the House Judiciary Committee, and he was fairly glowing with the kind of radioactive glee common to shady used-car dealers and the peddlers of aluminum siding to infirm widows.

“Republicans,” Gaetz burbled, “are taking a victory lap.”

This is curious, indeed. In the first of his two appearances before congressional committees on Wednesday, former special counsel Robert Mueller testified that a) he didn’t indict the president* on obstruction at least partly due to that godawful Office of Legal Counsel opinion that a sitting president cannot be indicted, an opinion that should be burned and have its ashes scattered on Sam Ervin’s grave; b) that a president*—like, say, this one—can be indicted once he leaves office, thereby implying that there is something there for which he could be indicted; c) that his report did not exonerate the president*; d) that there was a concerted effort on behalf of the White House to hamstring his investigation into the Russian ratfcking of the 2016 presidential election; and e) that Russia definitively wanted the president* to become the president*. And, remarkably, two of these statements came as answers to Republican senators. If this is a victory lap, I don’t know what a crash-and-burn would be.

That seems about right… and I tend to agree with Mueller that it’s not necessarily his job to draw conclusions from the investigation, at least with respect to the president. That’s the job of Congress, but they are mostly scared of their voters, so they mostly don’t want to take a position on the issue.

if it is self-service, which I assume a buffet is, then no, of course not. I assume you also basically bus your own table, yes?

That’s the key. There are two models of buffet…one where you do everything yourself (getting food, cleaning your table) and the other, which is what I encounter most (like Golden Corral) where they bring you drinks and bus the tables. We always tip there. The other model (like the now defunct Old Country Buffet) we didn’t tip at.

It all comes down to are there people doing things that rely on tips (servers/wait staff/bus people) vs all do it yourself. If they rely on tips, then tip.

So, a thought occurred to me the other day while browsing twitter - I think I even posted a shorter version of the thought on twitter.

I think presidential term limits actually makes the imperial presidency (for lack of a better term) stronger. Once a president takes office, they only have to worry about one more election. That frees them to do a lot of stuff that results in expanded executive powers, because they really don’t have to worry about facing voters.

Members of Congress, on the other hand, continually face re-election campaigns - be they every other year or every six years. When you constantly have re-election in the back of your mind, you’re more inclined to take “safe” positions. You’re also more likely to cede power to the executive because then you don’t even have to take a position.

Bullshit, Congress could have conducted a parallel investigation. They could have come to their own conclusions based on their own findings separate and apart from the Special Counsel investigation. They chose not to, because doing the actual work would be hard.

As for not subpoenaing Trump… I would have been arguing for that from day 1 if I were on the Special Counsel’s team. But if you don’t believe you’ll learn anything new, or if you believe you have enough to make your determination regarding criminal liability, I can understand not wasting judicial resources.

Democrats would have to hold all 12 of their Senate seats and win 20 of 22 Republican held seats in 2020 to have a 2/3 majority. In a resounding win, I’m guessing Dems would probably pick up, maybe 7 seats at most (Maine, Colorado, Arizona, Iowa, Alaska, North Carolina, Montana seem the most likely in that scenario, I think)

We’ve been over this so many times…

We only get one shot. I don’t think the votes were there for impeachment even in the House. As continuing inquiries turn up more and more, this is changing. (And we need an ironclad case.)

I agree we only get one shot. And I’ve never said the impeachment vote should happen immediately. But the inquiry - the investigation - must happen. There’s a very circular/cynical logic to saying we can’t investigate unless we have the votes, while knowing we can’t get the votes without the investigation.

The problem is that leadership seems rather uninterested in doing the work of investigation and oversight; so their not even willing to lay the ground work.

Brings back memories of Koo Koo Roo Chicken. Minichain in Los Angeles where skinless chicken was marinated in yogurt and vegetable juice for 24 hours then flame broiled. Great low carb sides of cucumbers and tomatoes marinated in HVOO and White Vinegar. Delicious stuff.

But then the main store got burned down in the Rodney King riots and insurance stiffed the business owner. He had to sell the business to another company that cheapened everything up and the chain went out of business around 2000.

Mueller has marshaled copious evidence to support impeachment, but the American public doesn’t seem to care. Who can bother to read a 448-page report when the Trump show is on? Being entertaining is more important these days than being virtuous or competent. Mueller may be an infinitely better person than Trump, but he is an infinitely worse television performer, and that is all that seems to matter in our debased age.

Exactly. Now, if I lived in Tyler, it’d be harder because, well, Gohmert! is re-elected every cycle. Here in South Austin, we can shake things up in a couple R-Districts which were gerrymandered to elect R’s. How many Congress Critters do we have representing various areas of the City? Seven.

Seven! We are the 11th largest TV market in the US and the largest City in the country without a home-based Rep in Congress with a compact district. Our Congressional representation runs from DFW to San Antonio to the Houston suburbs.

We have been carved up like fish bait.

Per the Mr Rogers story, it wasn’t just a color barrier. Francois Clemmons was a gay man in 1950s Pittsburgh. He did 98 of Fred Rogers’ children’s shows, and to make that happen they had to agree to a DADT.

(He was also an opera powerhouse, as so many of the Rogers team were strong local musicians.)

It’s very hard when we read this stuff constantly. But we need to take the same advice I say to people who talk about a high crime rate and how people are just waiting to attack them: compare what you read with what it’s like outside. There are plenty of people doing the right thing, helping their neighbors, standing up for those who can’t, etc. We’re also fighting to keep that going.

Trump does not look on us as an Empire nor as anything more than a banana republic. He is clearly not embracing the call of empire. Senate Trial began March, 6 1868.

Oh and the Presidential Election just happened to occur in November 1868…

A federal judge in California has blocked the Trump administration from enforcing new asylum restrictions for people crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.

Wednesday’s ruling by U.S. District Judge Jon Tigar in San Francisco came hours after a judge in Washington decided to let the rules stand while lawsuits played out in court.

The policy would prevent most migrants from seeking asylum in the U.S. if they passed through another country first.

It targets tens of thousands of Central Americans who cross Mexico every month to try to enter the U.S. It also would affect asylum seekers from Africa, Asia and South America who arrive regularly at the southern border.

Legal groups argued the proposal was barred by federal law establishing how people can seek asylum.

Why are you ignoring the midterm elections? Our side came out and we flipped the House and a few states. We’re not finished if we come out in droves. Too many Americans sat out 2016.

As I sat in my car waiting for my son to get off of work and listening to NPR for a few minutes, I got to hear Texas Congressman Will Hurd (R). I gotta say, his words on the border crisis against (softly) Trump policy, and his straightforward, non-partisan questions to Mueller today make me think his days in the GOP may be numbered. But it was great to hear him as a mostly lone voice of reason in his party.

I am curious — was Will Hurd the only Republican who seemed sane in questioning Mueller? Does anyone know?

I wish I could answer that. But in my spotty listening I would say “yes.” Some were angry assholes, some were reasonable assholes, some were southern-drawl spitfire assholes—I think you get the common denominator. They all were attacking the validity of the investigation itself. There’s also the issue that no one voted “for” him in any fashion. From what I’ve seen, even though elections are party centered, people have an idea of who the prime minister will be if a party wins, which can shape their vote. Johnson became prime minister without a public vote.

Georgia woman gets cold fries at McDonald’s, barges into kitchen and fires gun

A Georgia woman who reportedly fired a gun into the floor of a McDonald’s kitchen Monday afternoon had a pretty wild motivation for her crime: cold french fries.

The owner of a McDonald’s franchise in Garden City, Ga., said the woman received her order, then returned to the counter to complain about her cold food, according to WTOC.

As the manager went into the kitchen to retrieve hotter fries, the woman allegedly followed him with a gun. She then barged into the kitchen and fired a shot into the floor, according to the owner.

She fled the scene but police did catch up with her and toss her in jail.

I think Israel would be fine with that; Bibi would figure that he could manipulate Pence even more easily than Trump. After all, Bibi knows that Trump could commit to something at 2PM and then completely deny saying it at 2:05. You cannot rely on anything Trump promises. Pence is not likely to exhibit such behavior.

The majority of Israelis voted against Bibi, but because of Israel’s multi-party system the Likud was able to form a Knesset majority with a coalition of small parties. We may think the Electoral College is fucked up but the Israeli bazillion-party system is even worse.

What the Democrats need to learn is that there are certain battles you need to fight in order to uphold the principles of law and justice, even when the prospect of victory is uncertain.

On the Senate side, we need to learn from the Republicans how to be legislative obstructionist and saboteurs.

Forget institutional collegiality. That train left the station a long time ago. Our side needs to learn how to be colossal pains in the asses of the opposition.

No more mincing words. Call lies what they are. Call corruption, abuse of power, and obstruction of justice what they are - high crimes and misdemeanors, and, therefore, impeachable acts.

Set up the impeachment inquiries, go through the process, get all the dirt out there, draw up the damned Articles of Impeachment, send them to the Senate for trial, and when the Republican dominated Senate acquire Trump, use that to demonstrate that the process is broken, and hang that acquittal verdict around the Republicans’ necks, hammering them for their own corruption.
