CL’d from downstairs:

Stupid things you notice when you’re watching umpteen zillion hours of this…

We know phones aren’t allowed on the Senate floor. What about Apple Watches? A couple of the House managers were wearing them yesterday, and aren’t today.

And yes, I did basically treat the Bernouts right that he could have prevented this had we simply refused to nominate Hilary in the first place. I still think it’s a whole lot more likely that the loss would have been worse because I have a visceral fear of the very word “socialism” even myself, but maybe they’re right that there are enough Leninists in the country who are just being quiet; it has been long enough for over a generation of adults to not understand its evils from experience.

Actually the left still doesn’t understand this, especially those who support Bernie. They will continue to blame centrists if Bernie doesn’t get the nomination. It’s their way or the highway.

Napolitano will still be in favour of an authoritarian state afterwards, of course, but one where the Senate has the power, not the President.

When Trump shitposts like this, he’s telling everyone who isn’t in his cult that your opinions are worthless and he’s laughing at you, and he’s going to fuck you over and enjoy it.

Which isn’t the usual presidential mindset.

It is, however, perfectly the media’s mindset. How else can you explain how they treat Trump Country Diner voters as the only voters that exist, much less matter?

This is why Trump can get away with this shit, it’s part of the decades long coddling of the GOP base as literally the only voters that matter in this country.

Our broadcast media does the nation a disservice.

It continually goes beyond what can be explained away by simple misguided attempts at false balance. It’s complicity at this point. The media is absolutely invested in normalizing and treating Republicans as the default for governance, and when they debase it, they have to treat the debasement as normal, especially when they get to shitkick Dems for daring to try to do anything about it.

Anyway, after watching ep1, the first episode presented itself with high production values. And Patrick Stewart is still the best actor in the ST ensemble.

Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel  Jan 23, 2020 • 7:48:30pm

Just finished watching Peter Jackson’s They Shall Not Grow Old on HBO, and I am stunned.
It is a breakthrough in documentary presentation. The colorization is superb, this technology has improved a lot, but there is far more to it than that. They also used time correction to provide natural motion, and, most touchingly brought in forensic lip-readers so they could dub in authentic dialog. “Here it is! Hey, fellas, we’re in pictures,” says one Tommy as the camera frames his smiling face. In one scene, a company officer reads Field Marshal Haig’s order of the day to his troops before the horrific Battle of the Somme. In that case, his lips are obscured by his mustache, but they were able to reproduce his words from a surviving copy of the order. The effect is to bring alive events that were heretofore documented only in silent, grainy black and white. The faces and the muck of the trenches are completely real. It isn’t beautiful by any means, though the French countryside comes alive. Color brings out the maggots on dead bodies and blood on dead and wounded alike.
I have little patience with arguments about authenticity. The data used to bring out the color and sound is just as real as the light that fell on the black and white stock over a hundred years ago.
I think we are going to see a lot more of this in the future.

This what I don’t get - if so many of them supposedly “hate” him, here’s the most golden opportunity they’ll ever have to get rid of him. So either he’s got a metric fuckton of blackmail material on the whole sorry lot…or they really are that venal, corrupt, and evil.

They won’t be afraid of him — but his base who will drive them from office. Saving the country or saving their job ? Saving the job is first. And most of them may be true believers at this point. Or at least wholly owned subsidiaries of the Putin franchise — so Trump goes down, they go down too.

It isn’t only Donald Trump. Disabled Twitter has seen some VERY toxic shit in the past few weeks (thread).

Background: Two different disabled women had trouble with their rideshare service.
One of the women needed to have her food delivered to her door. The driver refused.
The other woman was using Uber. She had a wheelchair and a service dog.
Refused.
(In one instance, a disabled rider with a chair and service dog had their ride terminated, and they ended up stranded. Uber drivers can end the trip for numerous reasons. But Uber is required BY LAW to transport disabled riders, chairs, service animals, or not.)

It has gotten U G L Y for the disabled community for quite some time.
Another fine example:

And these people are the “good progressives”!

Things I expect to see on Saturday in the Senate:

- Republicans suddenly acting like they give a shit about the whole process, if only because they know wingnuts will be looking to jump on any who don’t look as though they’re treating Trump’s lunacy as “serious business.”

- Sudden interest by the wingnut press concerning behavior by Dems that they totally ignored from Repubs (ex: being away from seat, nodding off, playing with toys, sending texts, walking away for interviews, etc).

- McConnell/Graham/Grassly/etc suddenly jumping up after days off utter contempt from their own caucus and demanding Roberts drop the hammer on any Dem not following the rules, blatantly ignoring just how fucking hypocritical such a move is.

- The same wingnut press as mentioned above now breaking away from normal programming for total coverage of the “trial” while insisting that their viewers drop everything for the next 3 days and watch as Trump’s team “uncovers the truth”.

- And finally, the BSAB crowd will work themselves to exhaustion trying to portray abject lunacy coming from Trump’s lawyers as being on the same intellectual level as the master class in lawyering we’ve seen over the last 2 days.

Funny you mention Ebola, because my Friday morning student and I were discussing what’s going on in China, and he darkly joked that if there were ever something like an Ebola outbreak here, half the country’s 10 million people would be dead in two weeks, because instead of going to the hospital, they’d be sitting at home thinking that chamomile tea and saw palmetto extract will cure them right up.

Close to 500 Chinese tourists who arrived in Kalibo, Aklan from the Chinese city where the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak began, will be transported back to their point of origin this week, an aviation official confirmed Friday.

Civil Aviation Board Executive Director Carmelo Arcilla said that air carriers Royal Air Charter and Pan Pacific Airline will ferry the visitors back to Wuhan in three batches: Friday night, Saturday and Monday. The planes will then return to Kalibo without passengers. That’s despite the transport clampdown in Wuhan, where the new virus called 2019-nCoV originated.

Pan Pacific operates charter flights on the route from Tuesday to Sunday, while Royal Air operates charter flights from Monday to Saturday.

Meanwhile, here in Czech Republic, looks like we’ve got a flu epidemic cooking….thankfully, just plain old flu.

Translated from Czech:

The number of patients in South Bohemia increased by 36.5 percent in the last week. Hygienists now register 1,785 cases of respiratory diseases per 100,000 inhabitants. Doctors also report deaths due to severe flu . The child succumbed to the consequences.

“A child in the age range of zero to five years succumbed to the severe flu. But we will not say more about the case, “said Bendíková.

The category of the youngest children is currently most affected. In children under five years of age, hygienists recorded 5231 patients per 100,000.

The highest number of patients, regardless of age, is in the Český Krumlov region. In this district there are 2628 per 100 000 inhabitants.

Due to acute respiratory diseases, visits to Prachatice Hospital are not permitted. Starting Monday, the same ban will apply at the hospital in Český Krumlov. Visits are also not allowed to home* with a special regime in Rakvice in the Písek region.

A large explosion shook the city of Houston, Texas, early on Friday (Jan 24) morning, US media reported, with the noise waking many residents before dawn.

At least one person was injured by the blast, that also shattered windows and created a noise heard by people across a wide area, officials and media said.

Smoke and flames could be seen billowing from the area around the blast and emergency vehicles converged on the area.

“This is still an active scene. Avoid the area,” Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña said on Twitter.

Coronavirus: ‘Dead bodies pile up on floor’ at hospital overrun by outbreak

Disturbing video allegedly shows three dead bodies on the floor of a hospital struggling to cope with China’s coronavirus outbreak.

Nurses and others are seen stepping around the bodies, which are covered by white sheets, in a corridor packed with people apparently infected with the SARS-like virus.

Staff are wearing full-body protective suits while people waiting to be seen or given a bed are wearing masks.

The video is making the rounds on Weibo, a social media network in China, after it was posted by a woman claiming to be a nurse at a Wuhan hospital, which has been overwhelmed by the crisis.

Explosion took place at a warehouse/manufacturing company. One person is unaccounted for.

Peña said the explosion originated from a warehouse at Watson Grinding and Manufacturing, a machining and manufacturing company, at 4525 Gessner. Firefighters were on scene, and had taken one civilian to a hospital.

A hazardous materials team was on site investigating a chemical explosion.

CyFair ISD has closed Bane Elementary and Dean Middle schools, the district said. Students at other schools will remain indoors due to air quality concerns. At Spring Branch ISD, students will be kept indoors as well, officials there said.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration fined the company about $8,000 in 2013 for violations related to the control of hazardous energy and wiring problems, records show. It was inspected again in 2015 and no violations were found.

The company’s most recent chemical inventory filed with the federal government in 2015 only listed liquid oxygen onsite. However, the Environmental Protection Agency only requires the disclosure of certain chemicals stored in quantities above specific thresholds.

What if the Chinese government wants to keep information about what is going on off the internet as well?

That actually wouldn’t surprise me. As a Taiwanese student pointed out yesterday to me, those lockdowns have the added bonus of information suppression. There were rumors (and just that, rumors) that Internet in Wuhan and other affected areas was being throttled.

No one has said that presidents shouldn’t have the power to reduce aid to countries, the whole case is that Trump conditioned aid on investigating Biden and if people think that’s acceptable Presidential behavior, then we have a lot of authoritarian wannabes in this country.

Even that…. steal billions, and you might see prison - Club Fed (because you’re not a violent offender), while minorities who steal food or $20 bucks might see harsher sentences.

The disparity is omnipresent across the entire criminal justice system. Heck, we see it with drug crimes - cocaine possession is treated lesser than crack, even if there’s less crack present. Why was crack treated harsher? Because minorities were more likely to be using/caught with it.

Enforcement is typically greatest in minority neighborhoods, even though drug crimes occur across entire nation without regard to race. Car stops disproportionately affect minorities.

The system is fixed to keep minorities subservient and paying the price without an opportunity to get ahead.

The ask itself was a crime. It’s a federal felony. Trump broke the law with the ask.

No wonder Trump sought to bury the transcript on a secret classified server instead of letting the transcript see the light of day by those who’d normally view the information. He and his cronies knew it was evidence of crime, and by attempting to bury it on the secret server, committed additional felonies (obstruction, etc).

And you know? That’s why I get the appeal of Bernie Sanders even if I don’t like him and think his appeal is too narrow or misses the finer points. You create a system where money and monetary value matter more than humanity, you get people like that. And that’s unfortunately the system that the Roberts Court has helped to strengthen.

All that Petro Chem infrastructure is getting old ad in most cases, unmaintained. Especially now. They’re just getting started and will continue until industry gets their feet put back in the fire.

I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for that to happen: especially in Texas, where “regulation of industry” is still considered an phrase too obscene to be mentioned in public.

It’s unsurprising that explosions like this happen a lot in the Lone Star State: it is, after all, where a lot of the petrochemical industry (and related enterprises) was located in the first place: and where that good old frontier tradition of self-regulation is still regarded as the foundation of “free enterprise”. As long as the costs of the insurance for the damage are less than those of regulations, inspections, and enforcement, stuff like this is going to keep on happening.

I really think he did conspire with elements of the Russian government to get help in the 2016 election. Was it Schiff or another manager that said that the evidence is there in plain sight? Yeah, it’s absurd to think a presidential candidate would actually call a foreign adversary for help in an election but we all saw him do it. I mean I guess you could make the observation that he doesn’t know the severity of what he’s done but it’s still a crime. Trump needed help to beat Clinton and now he needs help to beat Biden. This is overused but it’s true: It will be a great day when our schools have all the money they need, and our air force has to have a bake-sale to buy a bomber.

I don’t necessarily agree with all of it since I believe in a robust defense but people especially children shouldn’t have to fundraise for medical expenses and this is a huge indictment on our system and the idea that if you just leave it all up to charity, all will be good. I have no idea what my lot would be if I didn’t have the privileges I do have both as a heterosexual white guy and someone whose family is well to do. Good Lord. Best case is 1918, worst case may be that Stephen King wasn’t writing fiction.

If, and that’s a big if, the reported mortality rate of 3% is accurate, then it’s not close to 1918. The mortality rate there was 10%-20%. But given the increase in world population, if it’s as easily spread as the 1918 flu, there could be a similar number of deaths. But, we will probably learn the truth very soon.

I, for one, welcome our new ant overlords…..uh, I mean farmers:

Britain has a new farmed animal, which is kept in barns, milked and moved between high and low pastures - but not by humans.

The giant pale aphid, Stomaphis wojciechowskii, has lived undiscovered for thousands of years on English oak trees, where it has been looked after by brown ants.

In return for plentiful supplies of honeydew - the sugary water excreted by the aphid - the ants herd the aphids, keeping them safe in “barns” they build on tree trunks from mosses, lichens and the exoskeletons of beetles.

“It’s beautifully complex,” said Matt Shardlow, the chief executive of Buglife. “It is farming - they are milking the animals, moving them from high to low pastures and building shelters for them when there’s not enough protection.”

I know a lot of tourists come to NYC for the food (and all those pigeons in the City have to be a flying buffet for raptors), but bald eagles?
Not your usual birdwatcher’s find. Not AFAICR….

And now for something completely different…

A bird sighting in NYC that is definitely interesting. Spotters found a red tailed hawk in Riverside Park. That’s not particularly news since we have lots of those hawks around the region.

But to see one perched 10 feet from a bald eagle?

Yeah, that’s upping the game some.

Out back of my favorite bar here in town is a deck overlooking the river. It is not surprising to see an eagle in a tree at the confluence and an osprey across the confluence in another tree hunting. I’ve never seen them hanging out at the same time in the same tree.

I used to see a golden eagle around Yucaipa, California when I was a kid. Huge bird. It landed on top of a fir tree and bent the whole top down.

Also, we had a clutch of baby hawks in the park by our place in Greensboro and they were adorable. After they got their flight feathers, they followed us around from tree to tree when we went walking and would land where ever we stopped and look to see if we had snacks. One took over the roof of my van and dared me to get in one morning.

The language implicates more than mere removal. Why? Because he’s talking to a different group of people than those who could actually remove her from the post.

Pompeo is the one who could remove her - he could recall her via legal and proper channels.

Instead, he’s talking to Parnas/Fruman, who are thug/goons who don’t have any authority to do anything legal here. They’re engaging in extrajudicial action at Trump’s behest to further Trump’s personal power and agenda that differs from official US foreign policy. That’s a crime in and of itself.

It goes to abuse of power.

The GOP has no response to this other than to bury their heads in the sand.

We need to look beyond whether Orange meant to fire Yovanovitch or something else. The point is that it’s become unclear in this age and that in and of itself is a huge problem. In the age of Orange he’s cozied up to foreign govs and NGO that actually murder, hurt, or threaten people: Russian and SA are the most obvious.

This is not a way to run a government, unless you want us to be like Russia or SA. If so, this is good stuff.

The way that Foggy Bottom (DOS) refused to back Yovanovitch when Rudy was going on FNC and smearing her in his role as Trump’s agent was disgusting. She was made out to be a partisan when in fact she’ was actually an ambassador for the Bush administration longer and joined the foreign service under Reagan. You might be able to convince me that Trump’s inner circle doesn’t get that the foreign service and national security apparatuses are full of men and women like her who serve presidents of both parties but that to me is yet another argument against Trump. He wants absolute loyalty.

LeftyRambles2413 (HappyWarrior)  Jan 24, 2020 • 9:02:14am

I’ve said it before but what they call the Deep State are actually dedicated, hard working public servants who serve both parties. My Dad’s father started working for the Feds under FDR and finished under LBJ and was still doing private casework into the Carter years. My mom started with the Feds under Carter or Reagan and is still a contractor for the Feds in the age of Trump. When they attack the “Deep State”, they are attacking public servants who work hard to make the country a better place. People who serve not an ideology but their country. And here’s another thing, a lot of them are veterans. Federal hires are disproportionally vets so when people like Trump’s allies on FNC or in the Senate like Senator Blackburn attack Colonel Vindman as “Obama officials”, they are attacking the troops to a large extent too.

Bernie and Trump both I think fear Biden because he can get some of their support without making himself into a cult figure.

And also because Joe is a “normal” political figure: experienced, reasonably competent, reasonably honest (despite the GOP bullshit, no “corruption” even near Trumpian levels);
and - worst of all, from their standpoint (at least IMO) - VERY electable.

Anyway, to me the Berniebros and their cult bring up unpleasant echoes of how Jeremy Corbyn led/dragged the Labour Party to such a needlessly crushing defeat in the UK’s December election*. Mainly though the classic Leftist failings: blinkered, self-righteous adherence to ideological absolutism coupled with a disciplined and unswerving Leader-cult; all the while dismissively oblivious to any other outside opinions, and firmly (if drastically wrongly) convinced that “the masses” will rise up to support them due mainly to the Manifest Righteousness Of The Cause. A Cause which, of course, can never fail, only be failed by insufficient faith and organizing….

*And yes, I realize the difference in the political/electoral structures between there and here don;t make this a perfect analogy: like I said, just “unpleasant echoes”…

And also because Joe is a “normal” political figure: experienced, reasonably competent, reasonably honest (despite the GOP bullshit, no “corruption” even near Trumpian levels);
and - worst of all, from their standpoint (at least IMO) - VERY electable.

Anyway, to me the Berniebros and their cult bring up unpleasant echoes of how Jeremy Corbyn led/dragged the Labour Party to such a needlessly crushing defeat in the UK’s December election*. Mainly though the classic Leftist failings: blinkered, self-righteous adherence to ideological absolutism coupled with an unswerving Leader-cult; all the while dismissively oblivious to any other outside opinions, and firmly (if drastically wrongly) convinced that “the masses” will rise up to support them due mainly to the Manifest Righteousness Of The Cause. A Cause which, of course, can never fail, only be failed by insufficient faith and organizing….

*And yes, I realize the difference in the political/electoral structures between there and here don;t make this a perfect analogy: like I said, just “unpleasant echoes”…

Ideological absolutism is going to result in us being back to where we started. And too many damn people whether they be Trumpists, Berners, or in the past Paulians don’t want to hear that. Ideological rigidness is going to get us nowhere and impede any progress that can be made. I think that’s what I hate when I see the Bernie left shit on Obama’s legacy. It’s like they have no appreciation for the fact that yeah Obama may not have gotten us universal and single payer but he helped get us in the right direction. I can’t get denied coverage anymore due to my heart condition. That should mean something but the presidency instead of being seen as a place of balance s sought out by either ideologues or smug unqualified assholes who think they can run a country despite little understanding of what the president does.

The WHITE working class…

They really think they can get the white working class voting Democratic again like it’s 1936. They have totally ignored things like the Southern Strategy and the real reason why the New Deal consensus declined and that’s because enough white middle class and working class people were convinced that the programs that they embraced when FDR and Truman got them are now ebil socialism. Oh and here’s another thing but Biden typically has lived more modestly than Bernie has over the years. I don’t begrudge Bernie for living well but he loves to act like he’s the working class’s only voice, he’s not and he loves feeding that idea and it’s offensive horseshit to those of us who actually know a thing or two about rising through the system.

I’ve seen bald eagles around Northern NJ on occasion. A couple of times, while on the train going through the Meadowlands, and once getting harassed by a bunch of ravens flying near a power plant off the Turnpike near Overpeck Park (where bald eagles have been known to roost).

I saw one just last week up near Waldwick NJ on Route 17 perched in a tree.

It’s become a lot more common. And I totally welcome it.

We have lots up and down the Illinois River, esp. in winter. There is a big nest on the creek just north of my house, and that pair would come and fish in our ponds. And fly through the yard at about 20 feet up. Exciting!

re: #300 Scottish Dragon

I used to see a golden eagle around Yucaipa, California when I was a kid. Huge bird. It landed on top of a fir tree and bent the whole top down.

Also, we had a clutch of baby hawks in the park by our place in Greensboro and they were adorable. After they got their flight feathers, they followed us around from tree to tree when we went walking and would land where ever we stopped and look to see if we had snacks. One took over the roof of my van and dared me to get in one morning.

Back forty years, we had a really cold winter, and a big storm blew across from the west. And it brought a golden with it. He hung around for a while. Just huge! Our largest hawk is a rough legged, and they are big birds! One went up to challenge him and he would have fit entirely in one wing. The golden had a feather missing in one wing, and so I know I saw him several times in the area. I assume he was finally able to get back where he belonged!

We wouldn’t have legal SSM because a McCain Justice Department wasn’t going to fight for that and nor would they repealed DADT. People wanted Obama to be this savior that he was never going to be but then they don’t appreciate what Obama in fact did do and that was with a right wing opposition that hated him and a left wing that was hypercritical of his every move when they felt it wasn’t enough for them.

There’s this grotesque fetish to support the troops, just as the Citizens of Gilead say ‘Blessed Be’ to each other in passing among their daily rituals. But the military is composed a vast number of people who push pencils, the admin, all the tedium of daily life while never picking up a weapon. They’re asked to do this in other countries, or to move inside the country every 2-3 years in a ‘deployment’ where you have to uproot your family to move to the next base. Not glamorious or glorious, it’s the work. And they do it.

I see no difference between those servants in uniform and the others who wear suits or pantsuits, doing work they can or cannot talk to their family about, some of it serious, much of it tedious, but none the less important. It’s all work.

I can tell you this much, my mom is one of the hardest working people I have ever known and she’s a government lifer but right wing propaganda will tell you that she’s lazy and that some asshole in corporate is not simply he’s in it for money.

And it took a lot of work and legislation to get the Civil Service system into place to replace the old spoils system where *all* the positions were doled at as favors after an election. (Charles Guiteau would seem to fit right in with the Trump Administration.)
