They’ve been floating a bunch of stuff actually.

Trump wants a payroll tax cut, a tax break focusing on hotel/hospitality industry (meaning Trump gets big breaks since his name is slapped on a bunch of hotels and golf resorts). Trump is also considering a bailout for the shale oil industry. There might be one for airlines too.

But for the millions who lose income or jobs from shutdowns and the economic disruption? Not a fucking thing. You don’t count.

Since to Bernie it’s all about Bernie I doubt it. Once he concedes he immediately fades into the background and the media coverage stops.

He might get a commentary stint or two from a network, but probably no more than any of the other candidates would get. Though he might be more popular than someone like Warren for that since “old man yelling at clouds” appears to sell better than getting someone on who can seriously talk policy and probably can’t be tricked into spouting something stupid.

nope
your ‘tax’ (ie line 12a and 16) wont change.
all other things equal, the amount you owe (23) will go up
because total payments (19) will go down (you’ll have less withheld (17))

so
- if you owe, you’ll owe more
- if you’re getting a refund, you’ll get less

doesn’t affect estimated tax payers

it’s. a. scam.

Daily Coronavirus Update (University of Nebraska Medical Center)

One more member of the group of Americans evacuated to Omaha from the Diamond Princess cruise ship departed the National Quarantine Unit today. Of the seven remaining Diamond Princess passengers, one continues to be treated in the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit and is in good condition.

The 36-year-old woman from Omaha being treated in the biocontainment unit remains in critical condition.

In the U.S., cases have topped 760, with nearly 30 deaths. Worldwide, cases stand at about 116,000 in 115 countries, with nearly 4,100 deaths.

The Omaha woman in critical condition is the woman who travelled to the United Kingdom and contracted the disease there.

Fremont schools and some businesses were closed a couple days ago and remain closed after that woman attended the Special Olympics tournament there. Plattsmouth schools are now also closed. She also attended VFW Post 2503 in Omaha, and contact tracers are urging members who were there last Wednesday to contact the Douglas County Health Department.

I feel like if this isn’t the last good market day for awhile it’s goddamned close to it. I’m out, sold everything.

I was thinking of getting out about three weeks ago and then I changed my mind. Bad move. About 40% of my 401K is in a fund that’s basically an insured savings account. With the rest of it, since I didn’t get out in time, I’m going to wait it out because even though I’ll be retired, there will be some money in there for the next 20 years and I want to try to earn something back on it. I don’t expect to get it all back, but I’m still gambling that it’ll be better than taking it out and putting it in whatever the hell is still considered to be a good investment now (my mattress?, a hand sanitizer manufacturer?). If Trump wins in 2020, I’ll go the mattress route with whatever is left.

They’re going to treat the pandemic as a distraction during which they can crime above and beyond what they’re already pulling.

Las Vegas mayor says media’s coronavirus coverage is ‘destroying us’

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman told tourism officials the media’s coverage of the coronavirus is “absolutely destroying us” and this is no time “for us to be wimps.”

Speaking at the monthly Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority board meeting, Goodman said fear about the outbreak has “taken over the world” and caused undue panic.

“This is not a time for fear to consume everything,” Goodman said. “The media is absolutely destroying us. I have yet to see a doctor who espouses the voice of social media and what the media is doing here.”

[…]

… Goodman said. “We need to be very proactive. We’re the convention and entertainment capital of the world and we are fine. Let’s not just sit here and be consumed with fear.”

Goodman said she thinks the media has gone overboard in its coronavirus reporting, though she didn’t offer any specific examples.

“When you turn on the TV or whatever podcast, it’s not about our great hockey team or that we’re going to have the NFL Draft,” Goodman said. “This is not a time for us to be wimps; it’s a time for us to be proud.”

There’s actually an explanation for that - stress brought on by repressed negative emotion (e.g. avoiding all conflict, taking on too much, always trying to be “nice”, etc) weakens the immune system and makes people more vulnerable to disease. Sociopaths who feel no guilt maddeningly end up physically healthier as a result (though unhealthy behavior like smoking can eventually catch up to them, e.g. lung-cancer limbaugh).

Where did you see 950? Official WHO reporting still has us at 472 and the latest figures I heard were somewhere in the 650-700 range.

According to the University of Nebraska Medical Center release at re: #75 above, the nation is north of 760 now, so still tracking right along with that chart. [edit to fix which comment]

more on the ‘payroll tax cut’

apparently it’s targeted only at social security / medicare and NOT your individual federal withholding tax

bloomberg

so it wouldnt affect your tax due / refund at all - no need to change your W-4

what it would do is continue to short the social security / medicare trust funds

The cost of a payroll tax cut or holiday would depend on how much of the tax is rolled back and for how long. A 2 percentage point cut for employees, as President Barack Obama signed at the end of 2010, would cost $150 billion in government revenue over a year and $300 billion if the employer portion also was cut.

of course trump wanting to do this ‘through the election’ would mean (likely) a democrat, ok, Biden, would be saddled with putting it back the way it was - ie ‘raising your taxes’. even though it’s more like when your credit card company says you can ‘skip’ a payment. your balance due to them doesnt change at all. they just waive the late fee.

President Donald Trump, in a meeting with Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill Tuesday, pitched a 0% payroll tax rate that would last through the rest of this year, a White House official told CNBC.

1 - that shows you how desperate this is - or they think this is
and
2 - next watch as they apply the ACA lawsuit logic and say a zero tax rate is not a tax so the whole law is invalid

…He resisted making the response to the epidemic a priority for as long as he could — refusing briefings, downplaying the problem, and wasting precious time. He has failed to properly empower his subordinates and refused to trust the information they provided him — often offering up unsubstantiated claims and figures from cable television instead. He has spoken about the crisis in crude political and personal terms. He has stood in the way of public understanding of the plausible course of the epidemic, trafficking instead in dismissive clichés. He has denied his administration’s missteps, making it more difficult to address them.”

This presidential behavior is all too familiar. It is how he has gotten through scandals and fiascos for more than three years in office. But those were all essentially political in nature, and most were self-created. The country has been lucky in the Trump era, largely avoiding the sorts of major, unforeseen crises that make the greatest demands of the modern presidency. That luck has now run out, and this demands a new level of seriousness from the president and those around him.”

Former White House homeland security adviser Thomas Bossert, who coordinated the U.S. response to global pandemics before his position was cut, told NBC News that time is running out to control the spread of coronavirus.

Said Bossert: “We are 10 days from our hospitals getting creamed.”

That’s more than the number of US soldiers KIA in WWII and Vietnam added together.

More than those KIA In WW2.

I’m tired of watching these people just yammer on from behind a podium in Washington, D.C. I want to see real action on the ground in affected areas, trucks and planes rolling out with supplies and testing kits, proper labs and testing facilities online in all 50 states and U.S. territories and so forth.

I know, I know. But I can dream, right?

For those wondering about the possibility that Trump could be profiting off of testing kits, here’s the story from Amee Vanderpool.

I asked this several days ago. Some suggested prep work for Fashion Week in Milan. I’ve got nothing that makes better sense, unless there was an industrial contingent from Wuhan visiting Milan in mid-january.

Another possibility is no reason — somewhere had to be first. (Or second after China.)

I kinda’ dig Mike’s new eagle headpiece. It would be more stable if he wore the rest of the helmet with it though.

Very Roman Legionnaire.

Pun intended.

Remember playing Winky Dink as a kid and you had to put the Magic Screen on the TV before drawing things Winky needed.

Then my sister hid the Magic Screen and told me to draw right on the TV tube…and Mom butt-bongoed me!
