It occurs to me that the Supreme Court decision prohibiting discrimination against LGBT+ people in the workplace should automatically overturn Trump’s EO ban of transgender servicemembers in the military.

I’m not sure if those separated from the service (presumably “convenience of the government under honourable conditions”) would want to go back in though. Maybe.

In thinking about it, I guess it’s finally official on all sides: Both my family and Mrs. Fish’s know that we are not the good, obedient Republican children they thought we were. Now comes the awkward period where we figure out how to bridge the enormous cultural gulf that has developed during the time I have matured into a strong, independent, culturally aware male.

So I had a confrontation with my neighbor today. I had been walking my dog in the woods and complained that i was getting eaten alive by mosquitos and black flies. My neighbor said, “wear long sleeved shirts, long pants, and spray exposed skin with Deep Woods Off or similar.” So I did what he said, and I had to yell at him: “you told me to do all of this stuff and I didn’t even get a single bite! I didn’t need any of that gear! Why are you being so alarmist?”

Actually the Courts typically show deference to military decisions. But it should reverse the Administration decision to allow healthcare discrimination against the lgbtq community.

I WON THE LOTTO!

$4 and four free tickets on a 2x2 multi-state lotto ticket.

My wife is buying us a replacement bird feeder after ours collapsed (it is very old rotted out). The bird feeder is $50 from a seller in Georgia.

The post is still good, so she’s ordering a replacement made from cedar from an Etsy shop. Shipping is by the Post Office and postage costs about $50 (something wood is heavy).

Now back to your regularly-scheduled political programming.

Woman, 15 friends test positive for coronavirus after night out at Lynch’s

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. - Erika Crisp has been short of breath for several days and has tested positive for COVID-19.

So have more than a dozen of her friends.

The one thing they all had in common: a night out at Lynch’s Irish Pub on June 6 in Jacksonville Beach.

Crisp, a 40-year-old health care worker from Jacksonville, said she’s been sick for eight days, and 15 of her friends have also tested positive for COVID-19.

Lynch’s learned some of its customers had tested positive for coronavirus after visiting the pub and the general manager opted to shut down voluntarily over the weekend for a deep cleaning.

Crisp said she and her friends had been careful with social distancing and had stayed indoors for months “doing everything the right way.”

“And then the first night we go out, Murphy’s Law, I guess,” Crisp said. “The only thing we have in common is that one night at that one bar.”

Crisp said she regrets going out to celebrate after months of quarantining.

It was Trump’s ban, not the military’s. The military ruled that there would be no significant impact on good order and discipline during the Obama administration when he asked them to study it. They implemented it, then Trump rescinded it after he was elected by tweet. The DOD then issued rules saying transgender servicemembers could serve, but only under sex assigned at birth.

Since then,

The Navy grants the first exception to Trump’s transgender military ban (Vox)

An officer who was tossed under Trump’s ban sued, and the Navy reinstated her with a waiver.

Bird houses: I put up a blue bird house some years ago. It has had no takers. However, lots of years ago I bought a hollowed out and painted gourd locally, with a small hole in it, and after years of nada, last year a wren took it on. She is back, and she (or her husband) is singing his/her heart out these days. I hung it in the pear tree right next to the sidewalk, and she doesn’t mind a bit. S/he was busy singing yesterday morning, and my son said, “she’s got pipes!”

The barn swallows are raising their umpteenth family outside my office window, and more have taken up spaces in the horse shed. Love watching them hunt over the pasture. Sure wish I could fly like that! Others can want to soar like an eagle, but I’d be happy to swoop like a barn swallow!

An apology that is NOT an apology. For those who are unaware, Oklahoma State’s star running back Chuba Hubbard - a Heisman Trophy candidate - called out OSU head coach Mike Gundy for wearing an OAN T-shirt. After a video on Monday, in which Hubbard apologized in front of Gundy for not going through “proper channels,” we get this video statement from Gundy.

It amazes me how head football coaches do not understand or even recognize what their primarily-black recruits experience. So many of these puds are ultra-right wingers, and you can smell the insincere nature of this “statement” - to the extent that is obvious Oklahoma State’s administrators forced Gundy to make.

College football and the NCAA are cesspools in which majority-led African-American players generate vast sums of revenue for white administrators and coaches. You would think the head coaches would have some understanding - or least a semblance of appreciation - for what these players endure on a daily basis.

I was exposed to this crap 20-30 years ago when I was a sports editor for a local newspaper. These fuckers such as Gundy just want to pad their bank account on the backs of “compliant” African-American athletes. They need to be held into account, and black players should just refuse to play - or just take a knee for an entire game - in order to prove a point.

It all looks like… exactly what I’ve been telling people is going on.

The scale of the operation is impressive, but the range of topics it focused on was relatively small. In descending order of frequency, the operation posted about nine main themes:

Ukraine as a failed state or unreliable partner
The United States and NATO as aggressive and interfering in other countries
Europe as weak and divided
Critics of the Russian government as morally corrupt, alcoholic, or otherwise mentally unstable
Muslims as aggressive invaders
The Russian government as the victim of Western hypocrisy or plots
Western elections as rigged and candidates who criticized the Kremlin as unelectable
Turkey as an aggressive and destabilizing state
World sporting bodies and competitions as unfair, unprofessional, and Russophobic

This goes back way before the 2014 date they are talking about in the report though. Snowden, Assange, and Greenwald are part of this too.

They’ve always been on Reddit and 4chan, but before they were using Facebook and Twitter, it was Livejournal, fake blogs, fake financial analysts like Zerohedge, and fake news sites like R(ussia)T(oday)

Russians cannot get everything they want with guns, tanks, and nukes, so they started a new kind of war. We (every western Liberal Democracy) are literally at War with Russia right now, and hardly anyone knows it.

It’s straight up murder. They knew better but still did it wrong.

They did it correctly, for the goals conservatives wish to achieve.

Conservatism is about money and power. So opening businesses and churches as fast as possible is more money for the businesses which gets funneled to GOP candidates for power.

The lives of their constituents do not enter into that equation. Fifty years of propaganda and they are now all parrots who would vote for Satan (R). Voting for Trump (R) already proved that.

This came up on “All Things Considered” this afternoon; I thought I would pass it on so there’s no confusion.

GoFundMe froze $350,000 in contributions after Black Lives Matter supporters mistakenly donated to an unaffiliated group with the same name (Business Insider)

Bullet points:

GoFundMe has frozen $350,000 in donations to a group called Black Lives Matter Foundation after BuzzFeed News informed it the group was unaffiliated with the Black Lives Matter movement.

The foundation’s founder told BuzzFeed News the group had a different mission from that of the anti-white-supremacy movement: “unity with the police department.”

Employees from companies including Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Dropbox also raised over $4 million for the group through the charity platform Benevity, which told Business Insider the funds had not been distributed to the group.

GoFundMe and Benevity told Business Insider they’re working with donors and campaign organizers to get the funds to the intended places.

The fundraising arm for the Black Lives Matter movement was not established until 2017 and is called Thousand Currents.

The Black Lives Matter Foundation was established in 2015, and accuses the Black Lives Matter movement of stealing their name. The Black Lives Matter movement was already well-known when started on Twitter in 2013.

At the end of the interview she basically asked him for any thoughts about anything. He discussed the failure of the United States to have coherent strategic information policy since the 1990’s. he noted in particular that China has a well funded and well organized information strategy. And that we need to do better.

Yes, we have, or at least prior to 2017 had, access to a lot of information from our own and (former) allied intelligence services.

Gates’ argument was that in the 1990’s we basically closed down/defunded most of our Cold War information institutions, Radio Free Europe, Radio Liberty, USIA, etc. Thus we disarmed while our rivals still maintain theirs and have been using them.

We have no way to get out an organized national message and we are now seeing the commercial organizations being either co-opted such as Sinclair, Facebook, Fox and Oan, or gamed such as Twitter and most of the rest of the major networks.

Of course, left unsaid was the question of what our national interests are. The current administration seems to view those as anything that enables remaining in power and continuing their grift. (Earlier interview on the show.)

But in that way that shows they totally lack self-awareness, they think the answer is to call out the press for not demanding the same from Biden. As if Joe is somehow “unvetted” and the press needs to be pressing him for info.

Maybe. Kinda. Sorta.

The “Caliphate” was absolutely real, but it was a regional uprising whose sole purpose was to take and maintain territory in Western Iraq and Northeast Syria. The Kurds, the Iraqis, and US supporting arms blew it into little tiny bits.

As for “Muslims as aggressive invaders”, where is this happening? I’ve seen lots of pitiful refugees, lots of very grateful people being accepted all across the world (except here) but “aggressive invaders”? Show me where this is happening.

Yeah but I’m talking about US and European islamophobes hand-wringing about these things in 2001-2010, not necessarily ISIS and the consequences of Syria and Iraq.

Putting out videos like… well just Youtube search the term “muslim demographics” and look at all the decade old or longer videos.

The publishing of books like “Eurabia: The Euro-Arab Axis” by Bat Ye’or.

Basically the whole idea that Muslim immigration was a secret invasion and that they would outbreed Europeans and take over in like 30 years combining all Sunni lands and the European dhimmi into a reborn Caliphate.

A lot of breath, time, bandwidth, and brain-cells were wasted by a lot of people about this at the time. If it was all started by Russian propaganda in the first place that’s even more infuriating.

re: #62 Jack Burton

Another thing I’ve been wondering is covered by this particular part of that report:

“Muslims as aggressive invaders.”

Since I know the Russians have been doing all of this way longer than that report claims, it makes me wonder…

Was some, most, or all of the Islamophobic bullshit about Taqiyya, “The Caliphate”, and the Eurabia/Muslim demographics bullshit that even some of us here at LGF unfortunately back in the day believed, at least for awhile, actually created by Russian agitprop in the first place, rather than home grown by “Anti-Jihad” assholes and the Russians latched on to it?

I’m angry and ashamed of being duped by a little bit of that for a time. If it was the result of Putin’s fuckery, it’s especially infuriating and personally insulting to me.

None of the indicators line up. The internet and social media landscape was completely different, targeted messaging wasn’t really a thing. Russia was still close to a complete fuckshambles trying to get it’s own shit together and America was already primed to go deep into Islamophobia after 9/11. So no reason to blame them for that, after all bigotry is what we do best.

Good Morning Vietnam

Sergeant Major Dickerson: Ten-hut.
BG Taylor: At ease. [Turns to Adrian] Cronauer, I’m sorry as hell about this thing. Goddamnit, I like you, son. I like what you do. Most of all, I like what you’ve done for the men. [Pauses, glancing at SGM Dickerson] But fact’s a fact. This could give the Army a black eye. I’m not gonna cover for you this time, son.
Adrian Cronauer: Sir- what about the show?
BG Taylor: We’ll handle it. I’m sorry, son.
[BG Taylor leaves Sergeant Major Dickerson’s office; there is a long pause. Cronauer looks at Sergeant Major Dickerson, at a loss for words.]
A1C Adrian Cronauer: Why’d you do this?
Sergeant Major Dickerson: I don’t like your style, your politics or your sense of humor. I don’t like what you say or how you say it. From now on the fighting men of Vietnam will hear exactly what they’re supposed to hear. You’re on a DC-8 out of Tan Sun Nhut Airport tomorrow morning- I recommend you pack quietly. That’s all I have for you, Airman.
[Sergeant Major Dickerson sits down at his desk, returning to his paperwork. Cronauer heads for the door, but halts suddenly and turns and leans back into the office.]
A1C Adrian Cronauer: You know? [SGM Dickerson looks up] You are in more dire need of a blowjob than any other white man in history.
[Cronauer closes the office door and leaves; Dickerson gets up to pursue him, but BG Taylor is waiting in the hallway.]
BG Taylor: Whoa, there, Dick. Put the brakes on. I wanted to wait until Airman had left to talk with you. Dick, I’m transferring you.
Sergeant Major Dickerson: [Startled] Transferring me, sir?
BG Taylor: Mm-hmm.
Sergeant Major Dickerson: Where to, sir?
BG Taylor: You’re goin’ to Guam.
Sergeant Major Dickerson: Guam, Sir?! There’s nothing goin’ on in Guam! Why Guam?
BG Taylor: Dick, I’ve covered for you a lot of times, ‘cause I thought you was a little crazy. But you’re not crazy, you’re mean. And this is just radio.
[BG Taylor walks away, leaving a stunned Dickerson behind him. As he presses the button for an elevator and gets inside, Taylor starts laughing.]
BG Taylor: “More dire need of a blowjob than any other white man in history”. That’s funny.

Coronavirus in Beijing: 27 neighbourhoods not allowed to leave as spike continues (BBC, thirty minutes ago)

At least 27 neighbourhoods have been classed as medium risk and one neighbourhood, near the market, is high risk.

People in medium or high-risk areas cannot leave the city. People in low-risk areas can leave, but need to test negative first.

However, getting a test is difficult - three testing stations told the BBC there were no tests available until July. Queues were seen outside other centres.

More than 1,200 flights have been cancelled to and from the city and railway services have been reduced until at least 9 July.

Primary school, middle school, and college classes are suspended, sports teams cannot play, and swimming pools and gyms are closed.

However, roads are open, and companies and factories can still work. The city is on a “level two” alert, the second-highest.

Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg says users will be able to turn off political adverts on the social network in the run-up to the 2020 US election.

In a piece written for USA Today newspaper, he also says he hopes to help four million Americans sign up as new voters.

Facebook has faced heavy criticism for allowing adverts from politicians that contain false information.

Rival social platform Twitter banned political advertising last October.

“For those of you who’ve already made up your minds and just want the election to be over, we hear you — so we’re also introducing the ability to turn off seeing political ads,” Mr Zuckerberg wrote.

Facebook and its subsidiary Instagram will give users the option to turn off political adverts when they appear or they can block them using the settings features. (more)

Trump Hydroxychloroquine Push Secured Millions of Likely Useless Coronavirus Pills

Trump still moving very slowly on what the law says he’s supposed to do.

The Elie Wiesel Genocide and Atrocities Prevention Act of 2018 was passed and signed into law in January 2019.

This bill views genocide or human rights atrocities as national security issues affecting the United States, and thus those should be identified before they happen if possible, and countered if they occur. It also directs the State Department to train Foreign Service Officers on how to identify atrocities or escalation so positive intervention can occur; it defines those as a threat to both national and international security. It directs the President to set up a committee to identify those areas of the world where atrocities may occur. The President must give an annual report to Congress on progress.

Well, he got around to punting setting up the committee (a whole year late) via a Presidential Memorandum.

Delegation of Certain Functions and Authorities under the Elie Wiesel Genocide and Atrocities Prevention Act of 2018 (White House Proclamations page)

Delegation of Certain Functions and Authorities under the Elie Wiesel Genocide and Atrocities Prevention Act of 2018

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including section 301 of title 3, United States Code, I hereby delegate to the Secretary of State, in consultation with the Secretary of the Treasury, the Secretary of Defense, the Attorney General, the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and the Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development, the functions and authorities vested in the President by section 5(a) of the Elie Wiesel Genocide and Atrocities Prevention Act of 2018 (Public Law 115-441).

Not just Trump but his whole group of religious followers. As of yet, there has not been a serious schism in Conservative faith.

You might remember this from a couple months ago.

Gov Noem Announces South Dakota will Be First State with a Hydroxychloroquine Statewide Clinical Trial to Help Fight COVID-19 (Goes to the Government of South Dakota)

TL;DR: South Dakota to experiment on people with a drug known not to have an effect on the disease, but many bad side effects.

Florida ordered 1M doses of a Trump-touted drug. Hospitals didn’t want it (Politico)

TALLAHASSEE — Florida is sitting on more than 980,000 unused doses of hydroxychloroquine, a drug President Donald Trump touted as a “game changer” in the fight against the coronavirus, after only a handful of hospitals in the state asked for access to the medicine.

Gov. Ron DeSantis said in April that the state was getting 1 million doses of the drug. The announcement was made during a press conference that came across as a commercial for hydroxychloroquine. Held in the Florida Cabinet room, the event featured the video testimonial of a patient who had taken the drug, a question-and-answer session with a doctor who endorsed the treatment, and DeSantis touting the drug by name, even as he referenced other experimental treatments for Covid-19 only vaguely.

Utah went all-in on an unproven Covid-19 treatment, then scrambled to course-correct (Stat, a medical report journal)

Even before President Trump started plugging chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine as Covid-19 treatments, enthusiasm for the old malaria drugs was swelling in the state of Utah.

The “stunning medications” led to “responses that are equivalent to Lazarus” — the Biblical figure brought back to life by Jesus — one physician said at an event at the state Capitol. The deputy director of the state health department, even as he acknowledged there was not “FDA-type of evidence” showing the drugs worked, said he was willing to put stock in case reports and “test tube evidence.”

Propelled by that hype, as well as mounting fears of the oncoming pandemic, the state pursued a sweeping — and eyebrow-raising — policy that would have let pharmacies dispense the unproven medications to patients with Covid-19 without a prescription. Utah, which took perhaps the most aggressive strategy with the drugs of any state, also put in an order for $800,000 worth of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine to build a stockpile, and considered buying millions of dollars more.

Follow the cash. I bet some Trump contributors and cronies made a bundle out of this.

Trump apparently got the idea from someone in Utah, while the owner of the drug store chain “Meds in Motion” was pushing to make the drug non-prescription in the state, followed by Utah purchasing $800,000 worth of the drug from that pharmacy chain.

In our opinion: Utah’s rush to buy hydroxychloroquine lacked any definable purpose (Deseret News Editorial Board)

Much remains unknown about both the virus and its speculative treatments, but this latest information should give pause to the rush for the drug. Little definitive evidence exists to prove its effectiveness against COVID-19, despite anecdotal examples of success.

The study also ought to inform the actions of over-eager Utah lawmakers, as well. They passed HB4001 on Thursday, over the objections of the few lawmakers with medical expertise, authorizing $6 million for purchase of the drugs. This is on top of a separate bill passed last week that authorized $2 million for that purpose.

We hope those plans will be put on hold, as well.

The Deseret News learned Thursday that the governor’s office, unbeknownst to the state health department, purchased 20,000 doses of the drugs in late March for $800,000. The health department, meanwhile, was negotiating for a separate 200,000-dose order.

Surprise, spending tax money without the legislature’s approval. That seems to happen a lot in conservative-run states.

As for “Muslims as aggressive invaders”, where is this happening?

A lot of white supremacist types have a thing for the Siege of Vienna in 1683 when the Ottomans invaded Europe and threatened to do to white people what the white people had been doing to the locals in the Americas, Africa and elsewhere. There’s also the Moors in Spain, another not-white-people invasion even earlier.

Honest to God, I don’t understand this.

Here in Czech Republic, the government passed emergency legislation requiring that face masks be worn at all times, including even if you were just walking down the street, not to mention if you were in the supermarket or on public transportation. And you’d face stiff fines for non-compliance, too.

And now? Things are opened up pretty much to 90% of normal, life is continuing as before (I was in Ostrava’s biggest shopping center yesterday afternoon and you’d think it was the week before Christmas…it helps that you still have to wear face masks indoors or in shops or on public transportation) and even though plenty of Czechs grumbled about wearing them, they wore them, because it was explained in plain language that the use of face masks helps.

JFC, how difficult is this to do? WTF is wrong with some Americans that they think wearing a face mask in a supermarket or on the bus is some species of totalitarianism?

A man in Vienna has been fined €500 (£447) for breaking wind loudly in front of police in a move the Austrian capital’s police force was at pains to defend.

The Österreich newspaper reported that the penalty stemmed from an incident on 5 June and that the offender was fined for offending public decency.

City police wrote on Twitter that “of course no one is reported for accidentally letting one go”.

They added that the man had behaved provocatively and uncooperatively during an encounter with officers that preceded the incident.

I don’t really have any compassion for this level of stupid. She’s a healthcare worker? I wouldn’t want her near me or anyone else. I am not a mean person, but she needs to lose her healthcare worker job. And how many people did she and her buddies expose or infect with Covid? Yeah she’s sorry and regretful now, but she’s not a kid, she’s in her 40s FFS.

Selfish shit like this is why we’re still seeing an increase of cases and deaths. And that’s all it is, being a selfish brat.

Birmingham Alabama. One of the nation’s covid19 hotspots. ICUs and hospitals are overrun and at or near capacity. Cases soaring and deaths rising.

City Council takes up two measures - one to require masking with enforcement. The other is a resolution calling for mask wearing.

The enforcement ordinance fails. Read the whole thread and how everyone kept ignoring the doctors on the front lines insisting on this to save lives. The city council members opposing this couldn’t get out of their own way claiming that it was unenforceable - even though we impose criminal sanctions for not wearing seatbelts and other types of laws that save lives.

The fact-free anti-science GOP are going to kill millions of Americans. Because covid19 will not go away. It wont disappear and all it does is spread relatively easily among people who don’t wear masks and aren’t social distancing.

Fuck Trump, Fuck the GOP, and fuck the mendacious media who enables both;trade&

Wearing a mask is not an infringement on anyone’s rights. It doesn’t violate your 1A. It doesn’t prevent your ability to assemble. It allows it to occur safely and in conjunction with social distancing where possible.

Without masking, you greatly increase risks to everyone in your community.

This is a bogus argument that carries zero weight as courts have already found around the nation (that masks somehow violate rights).

Here’s some enforcement. When the Czech government passed the law making masks compulsory here, they set a fine for non-compliance. That amount, $500, is equivalent to about one-third of what a lot of Czechs make per month. The second fine was the equivalent of $5,000. And police were authorized to issue the fine on the spot.

We haven’t had a healthy democracy since Bush v. Gore.

As I have said before, I believe the 1st Republic ended 22 November 1963. This has been something like the warring states period in Chinese history ever since and it still remains to be seen if a second republic will arise or if a fascist regime will take the first republic’s place.

As far as the government is concerned, we’ll probably see the Trumpie crooks desperately trying to shred all the evidence and cover their asses. Meanwhile, the bureaucracy will have absolutely no reason to help them with this and will stall everything out completely like only a bureaucracy can. I would guess that copies of documents will mysteriously turn up in all sorts of places when they were supposed to have been destroyed.

Authoritarian governments live and die on top cover. With the proper top cover, you can do whatever you want to your inferiors and steal whatever you can get away with. Once that’s gone, you’re gone too.

He talks about Trump “always being ten steps ahead of of everyone”. When our daughter was a toddler she would do that when we took her shopping. We would put her in the cart when it got crowded.

—————-

For a long time, the incongruity between Trump’s bumbling and erratic style on one hand, and his rapid political rise coupled with the fanatical devotion of his base on the other, led many (including us) to wonder if Trump was masterfully playing a game of 3-D chess that the rest of us just could not see. These stories make clear, once again, that no, he isn’t.

re: #388 Joe Bacon 🌹

The First Amendment does not give someone a right to lie just as it does not cover a person maliciously shouting “fire” in a crowded theater.

You also have speech which is not covered by the 1st amendment, such as 18 USC § 1091 (c) as well as issuing a “give no quarter” order (war crime).

re: #387 makeitstop

Their excess deaths so far this year is over 4,000 above what they admit as covid19 deaths.

They’ve been caught categorizing excess deaths as pneumonia cases. That would either be a separate and distinct outbreak 4x larger than the annual death toll from pneumonia, or they’re simply treating covid19 deaths as pneumonia.

Yeah, it’s the latter - because they weren’t doing enough testing early on, and COD was listed as something other than covid19.

With the lack of social distancing and masking, this will get a lot worse (in the middle of the summer no less). What Trumpists don’t get is that summer means a lot of people are outdoors, but when they come inside, they’re dealing with HVAC blowing air around that can contain covid19 particles. So, cases keep rising - and it just keeps spreading.

As with Texas, the GOPers are ignoring the health experts and tying hands of localities that are trying to impose mask requirements and social distancing more stringent than what the Trumpists want.

Also, if you know of someone with a spare room or similar accommodations let me know. Thanks.
