In Which the Supreme Court Declares Donald Trump the Loser

Politics • Views: 25,924

Donald Trump’s attempt to use the legal system to seize power after losing the 2020 election ends here.

It was 9-0. Not even Trump’s three handpicked justices were willing to co-sign the ludicrous mess his legal team cooked up.

They apparently take their jobs and legacies much more seriously than the craven bootlicking Republicans in Congress. Who knew?

Trump is only a part of the bigger problem.

The entire GOP is corrupt and seditious as fuck. Every last motherfucking one of them.

Not a one who signed on to this suit should be seated in Congress under the 14th Amendment. Let them litigate that to the Supreme Court.

The treasonweasel GOP must be investigated and prosecuted for their criminal conduct, and the DOJ must take a no holds barred approach. Special prosecutors and devote an entire branch of the SDNY/EDVA (hello Rocket Docket) to get this going.

This was entirely predictable from a legal standpoint - there was no standing, the claims were preposterous, and yet the entire GOP was more than willing to go down the rabbit hole because Trump said he won.

They weren’t doing this because they were blackmailed. They did it because they’re fucking fascists who saw this as an opportunity to go all in.

That’s the proper response from the judiciary. That they couldn’t even properly form a case, meet the requirements as to form, failed to state a cause of action, lacked evidence, and otherwise couldn’t argue their way out of a prelaw classroom.

Well, the Kraken team still has a case ongoing, I think. Oh, and they have Spider/Spyder, who, we come to find out is NOT a military intelligence expert (surprise, surprise)

Records show that Merritt is an Army veteran and that he enrolled in a training program at the 305th Military Intelligence Battalion, the unit he cites in his declaration. But he never completed the entry-level training course, according to Meredith Mingledorff, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Army Intelligence Center of Excellence, which includes the battalion…”He kept washing out of courses,” said Mingledorff, citing his education records. “He’s not an intelligence analyst.”

His separation papers, which he provided to The Post, make no mention of intelligence training. They show that he spent the bulk of his decade in the Army as a wheeled vehicle mechanic.

So Team Kraken thought they were bringing in Captain America, but got Beetle Bailey instead? Smooooooth…

FWIW (little, I’m sure), I think the Trumpsters actually have three “courtroom victories” in their quixotic judicial crusade: the PA “segregated ballots” case, and a couple of lower-court procedural rulings in (I think) MI and NV (?). But they have been most-definitely goose-egged where it counts: ALL of their serious* “election-fraud” cases have been generally been tossed at the lowest level, and the higher courts (State and Fed’l) have shown NO interest, AFAICT, in reversing anybody’s decision.

*serious in the sense of “filing action”, certainly not in content.

Not normally no.

But the core problem here is one of standing. The Supreme Court found that Texas had no standing to sue. That doesnt’ change even if the case originated in the District Court.

Inter-state suits can originate in the Supreme Court because the Constitution provides the Supreme Court with original jurisdiction over disputes between states.

No standing means those district courts can’t suddenly find that Texas had standing when the Supreme Court said no. No means no.

Not normally no.

But the core problem here is one of standing. The Texas found they had no standing to sue.

Thanks! If I see Rudy, I’ll let him know that!

Another theory about Trump’s refusal to concede: He cannot stand to lose the limelight. He dominated the public stage from the day he came down the escalator. He was now facing the likelihood he wasn’t going to be getting much coverage; instead it would be Biden/Harris all the time. This whole effort besides his hope of outside chance at victory and mucho grifting opportunities was merely to shift attention away from Biden and keep it on him.

And it worked very well for both of them until Hitler had Barbarossa fall to pieces when his tanks had their tracks welded into the winter ice and Drumpf had his economic “miracle” die in a developing winter pandemic. Followed by Spring, and Summer, and Fall, and Winter again when he was absolutely incapable of accepting reality and taking action.

In that, he was just like Hitler after Stalingrad which gave the Russkies breathing room to ramp up production.

The GOP has been drifting in this direction for decades, accelerating with the rise of Limbaugh et al and Fox News, flooring it during the Obama era, and turbocharging it in the Trump era.

Yup. From this point forward, the duly appointed electors of the states are the final word according to the law. If the Senate rejects them and the House approves them, it still defaults to the electors appointed by the certification process. Joe Biden WILL be President on January 20, 2021. The only question remaining is how many people will eventually be arrested for this whole charade.

Yes, that’s normal a normal winter in 1941/1942 and the Battle of Moscow hurt the Wehrmacht.

But the winter of (Southern Front, Case Blue) 1942/43 was brutal and destroyed several German Corps and Army units around Stalingrad. Troops didn’t have sufficient gear, engines froze, logistics lines were shot to shit. It was a disaster, but Hitler could not admit his failure.

The fact that he was as crazy as a shithouse mouse by that time didn’t help.

hi

I just wrote a letter to my regional newspaper. I timed it for this hour so it hopefully appears in the Sunday edition.

So, State Attorney General Doug Peterson and Representative Adrian Smith signed on to the Texas lawsuit to deny the voting rights of four other states.

Aside from me wanting to know how much state tax money and employee time was wasted on this quest because Texas doesn’t like the way other states vote, I want to know why Mr. Peterson didn’t care the filing contained complaints from two non-existent states; New California and New Nevada.

Is Mr. Peterson arguing that non-existent states can nullify the votes in existent states, or does he simply not read court filings before signing onto a case? Either answer disqualifies him from being a lawyer, much less Nebraska’s Attorney General.

Why are representatives such as Mr. Smith so intent on overthrowing an election because they didn’t get their way? Do they hate the voters that much?

The admission bill for Texas had a provision that it could be divided into as many as 5 states.

Of course, conservatives even lie about this.

It ignores the federal Constitution, which prohibits dividing a state without the approval of that state legislature and the federal government.

Additionally, the relevant clause for Texas Accession reads:

Third - New States of convenient size not exceeding four in number, in addition to said State of Texas and having sufficient population, may, hereafter by the consent of said State, be formed out of the territory thereof, which shall be entitled to admission under the provisions of the Federal Constitution; and such states as may be formed out of the territory lying south of thirty-six degrees thirty minutes north latitude, commonly known as the Missouri Compromise Line, shall be admitted into the Union, with or without slavery, as the people of each State, asking admission shall desire; and in such State or States as shall be formed out of said territory, north of said Missouri Compromise Line, slavery, or involuntary servitude (except for crime) shall be prohibited.

Nope. No respect. He could have refused Sidney Powell. More likely, since Ms. Powell doesn’t know every vet, he went to her.

The likelihood here is he put himself forward to participate in a mockery of the justice system and democratic elections by lying.

Veterans do not automatically get respect because they were veterans, even combat veterans (if that is what this guy is).

I find it hard to believe that there is anyone out there who actually always tips at 50% or more, but that said, we could strike up an alliance with the USSR to defeat Hitler, and well the Lincoln project people are a lot better than Stalin.

And as I briefly mentioned yesterday, while doing my side-hustle online English tutoring, I spoke with a young woman from Vietnam who was very well informed on the American judicial and political system, and it turned out exactly as she predicted - that the Texas lawsuit was baseless and without merit.

Yeah, but like football coaches who bitch about how the refs fucked them out of a win, the MAGAts in the WH are whining that the USSC bench didn’t give them a hearing and thus this case didn’t fail on the “merits.” Hence why Ghouliani is now saying they’ll refile in a district court in order to attain standing.

Note they say “particularly Republicans”:

We apologize for endorsing U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz, who wants to overturn the election | Editorial

We apologize to our readers for endorsing Michael Waltz in the 2020 general election for Congress.

We had no idea, had no way of knowing at the time, that Waltz was not committed to democracy.

During our endorsement interview with the incumbent congressman, we didn’t think to ask, “Would you support an effort to throw out the votes of tens of millions of Americans in four states in order to overturn a presidential election and hand it to the person who lost, Donald Trump?”

Our bad.

Trust us, some variation of that question will be asked of anyone running for Congress in the future, particularly Republican candidates whose party is attempting to upend the way we choose a president.

I do too. A healthy democracy needs at least two functioning parties committed to making it work to survive long term, and we’ve drifted a long way from that. I like and admire AOC a lot, and while I’m taking a “trust but verify” approach with the LP, their ads were brutal, and they are the kind of very smart people we need if we’re going de-Trumpify and de-stupidify the GOP long term. I’ve listened to their podcasts over the past few months, all the people involved seem to be the real deal. But I need to hear them acknowledge that the roots of Trump go back to people that many of them worked for and promoted. I need to hear them fully acknowledge the role racist dog-whistling played in winning over voters (before Trump turned into a bullhorn), from Nixon, through Reagan (especially), and Bush 41 and 43 and to fully renounce the religious right and its misogynistic and anti-LGBT bigotry, along with “Christian nation” bullshit before I can get totally on board with them. For now, I’m content to appreciate their work in dethroning Trump, and their commitments to defeating Trumpism going forward.

Any retelling of the 1970s disco boom has to reckon with Disco Demolition Night, a shameful promotional event staged by Chicago shock-jock DJ Steve Dahl between games of a White Sox doubleheader on July 12, 1979. This violent debacle is a convenient summary of the backlash disco faced, and is often cited as the music’s terminus, which it wasn’t.

Pro tip: Don’t expect favors from people with lifetime appointments.

Sort of true EXCEPT for a judge who wishes to retire and be replaced by someone who represents the same political ideology. That was one of the motivations for Sandra Day O’Connor’s vote in Bush v Gore.

When, in 2000, the networks began calling the election for Al Gore, O’Connor, at a party held by friends, blurted out, “it’s over,” and rose from her seat before the television in disgust. Her husband, John O’Connor, explained to the other guests that she wanted to retire and of course did not want to turn over her seat to a Democratic president. Six weeks later, she cast the critical fifth vote to stop the recount of the Florida ballots and guarantee the White House for the Republican.

Wyoming has nation’s third-highest rate of COVID-19 nursing home deaths (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

Governor Mark Gordon finally implemented a statewide mask mandate in Wyoming, along with limits on public gatherings, restaurants, and bars.

Wyoming’s rate of COVID-19 nursing home deaths ranks third in the nation, according to information released Thursday by the AARP.

There were nearly three such deaths for every 100 nursing home residents in the state during a four-week period that ended Nov. 15, AARP’s figures show. Only South Dakota (4.82) and Montana (3.12) ranked higher for nursing home deaths per 100 residents during that time.

Nationally, the rate for that period was 0.78.

Wyoming’s nursing home death rate remained well below the national average until this fall, when it spiked, the AARP’s database shows. That spike mirrored a statewide surge in cases, hospitalizations and deaths that began in mid-September. Of late, that surge has begun to ebb, though health officials warn that it could rise again due, in part, to holiday gatherings and travel.

FTFY

Virtually every county they’ve tried to challenge or outright reject has been one where whites are in the minority. And one of the biggest figures for vilification in their failure to retain Georgia this year has been Stacey Abrams. All you have to do is look at the short-lived controversy in MI, where two white members of a four member county certification board first voted against certification, and then one suggested that the white suburbs be certified but the black majority Detroit be denied certification due to “irregularities.”

I suspect that that was one of the factors in bringing this case, getting that foot in the door where states could sue other states for “unconstitutional” laws and rules. Because once you’ve set that precedent, even if the case that started it all ended up failing on the “merits,” then the USSC bench has effectively announced open season on all “socialist” laws and policies.

LOL

Jerry Falwell Jr. has had a change of heart. See, back in October he sued Liberty University for defamation, alleging that his former employers had been cahootsing with the Lincoln Project and other “anti-evangelical forces” to ruin his good name.

No, we didn’t make that up! Read it for yourself.

First Jerry Falwell Instagrammed that lovely photo of himself drinking “black water” with his wife’s assistant. Then a pool boy with whom he and his wife had been keeping company gave reporter Aram Roston a whole mess of texts and recordings which sure implied that Falwell had been a willing observer of his wife’s dalliances. And then, after the Liberty Board demanded Falwell’s resignation as university president, David Nasser, Liberty’s head of Spiritual Development, gave an address to the student body in which he said, “We open the semester with a series of revelations about Jerry Falwell that can only be described as shameful. That’s OK, by the way, to say it. It’s OK to call sin, sin. Paul says in Ephesians: Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness but rather, expose them. It is shameful to even mention what a disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible.”

And that right there is defamation, at least according to Ol’ Jerry.

Or it was, until this week when he decided that he was just too bored with the whole thing to bother going forward with discovery. Which has nothing whatsoever to do with his wish to avoid answering questions about the truth or falsity of the allegations under oath. Perish the very thought! Jerry just needs a “time out.”

Wyoming Department of Health doctor resigns after calling COVID-19 vaccine a biological weapon (Casper Star-Tribune)

A Wyoming Department of Health doctor who at an event last month suggested COVID-19 was created by Russia and China to spread communism across the globe has resigned from the state agency, a department spokesperson said via email Wednesday.

Dr. Igor Shepherd was the readiness and countermeasures manager for the Wyoming Department of Health. At a Nov. 10 event in Loveland, Colorado, Shepherd shared a debunked conspiracy theory about the forthcoming COVID-19 vaccine, saying it had been developed as a biological weapon and would reprogram a person’s immune system. Shepherd was introduced as a health department employee.

“The Wyoming Department of Health has accepted Igor Shepherd’s resignation. We decline to comment further on this personnel matter,” Wyoming Department of Health Spokesperson Kim Deti said via email Wednesday morning.

Nah, feels more like Berlin, April ‘45. That all the months of promises that the Bolsheviks are being brought to ruin, and that the Allies are spilling their blood on a wall of German iron, were total bullshit meant to prevent total panic. There will be no salvation by scores of wunderwaffes or battered powers offering to agree to Hitler’s terms. Hell, the little they see of the Fuhrer is of a broken man, his body visibly ravaged by age and disease, only confirms that the war effort is soon to be lost. The Rapid City, SD Journal has a long article about dipshits threatening city or county officials all across rural American for deigning to consider mask orders or other restrictions to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.

In South Dakota, the mayor of Rapid City said City Council members were harassed and threatened over a proposed citywide mask mandate that failed this week even as intensive care units across the state filled with COVID-19 patients.

The tensions are flaring amid an epic surge in U.S. deaths, hospitalizations and infections over the past several weeks.

Meanwhile, Gov. Kristi Noem was at a rodeo in Texas. She has allowed legislative meetings over computers rather than in person.

In Helena, Republicans who control both chambers of the Montana Legislature denied a request by Democratic lawmakers to require masks be worn inside the Capitol during the legislative session next month.

This is a very significant turning point in a certain sense.
People show their colors.
Anyone in the next few years opens their mouth, it should be looked up whether they supported the Trumpofascist attempt to steal the election.
If they did, they should not be reasoned with, only metaphorically stomped into the ground with their own words.

Local news:

In the county paper today, Messiah Lutheran Church (the church across the street from me) is modifying their annual Christmas dinner/fundraiser.

Instead of everyone having dinner together in the church hall, they will have drive-up service or volunteers to deliver to your home (if you live in eastern Morrill or western Garden Counties). The pastor will be there for people who wish to speak with her or have a short prayer or other comfort.

They will be using the street between the church and my house for staging the deliveries, so I will move my car off the street to the front of my house. (I normally do that for big events at the church when I know about them.)

One reason that Scotland voted against independence in 2014 is that it would have left them outside the EU with no guarantee of being let back in.

Also:

David Cameron has revealed that he suggested to the Queen’s private secretary how the monarch could influence the outcome of the 2014 Scottish independence referendum, before she went on to make an intervention that was widely seen as helping a faltering pro-union campaign.

Cameron, as prime minister, was on a weekend break at the Balmoral estate in the Scottish Highlands in September 2014 when a YouGov survey put the campaign for Scottish independence in the lead for the first time.

DAVENPORT, Ia. — Police in eastern Iowa are investigating the vandalism of a synagogue in Davenport that occurred on the first day of Hanukkah.

Someone used red spray paint to scrawl a New Testament biblical citation at an entrance of Temple Emanuel on Thursday afternoon, television station KWQC reported.

The citation “John 8:44” was painted on a wall near the temple doors. The verse recounts Jesus telling his critics that they are the spawn of the devil.

More from the Des Moines Register to consider if you bought toys for children for Christmas (or other) presents.

Leaked reports: Feds pulled toy police from ports, safety checks plunged in COVID-19

The federal safety inspectors who protect kids from dangerous and deadly toys were not standing guard for nearly six months while this year’s holiday gifts entered the U.S. by the shipload.

Princess palaces and playhouses, water guns and tricycles landed on store shelves and front doorsteps without the usual security checks for lead, chemicals or choking hazards.

Government leaders had secretly sent home the nation’s toy police.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission pulled its inspectors from ports around the country in mid-March because of the threat of COVID-19. Leaders of the federal agency made the decision in private, without a warning to consumers or full disclosure to Congress, then continued the shutdown at the ports and a government testing laboratory until September, USA TODAY has found. That included spring and summer months that were their inspectors’ busiest last year.

That’s because CPSC now works for corporations, rather than the people, under conservatism.

The CPSC did not flag a single toy at the ports between June and July for poisonous lead levels, one of the most frequent violations, internal records show. In August, port inspectors reported their total monthly activity amounted to 47 screenings for all hazards — less than 2% of a typical month before the pandemic hit.

As of this month, the records show inspectors still were not working in five of the 18 ports they normally patrol, including major commerce hubs in Chicago, New York and Savannah, Georgia.

Consider any toys this year you bought for children carefully.

Shoppers have no way to differentiate good products from any bad items that slipped in. Experts fear it could take years to discover the dangers allowed into American homes.

Big-name national retailers and distribution companies have imported tens of thousands of shipments during the pandemic. The retail industry says it does not rely on CPSC to keep consumers safe. Importers and manufacturers are required to monitor their own products and inform the government when they find hazards.

In an interview with USA TODAY, the CPSC’s acting chairman, Robert Adler, said broadcasting its port playbook would have invited companies to exploit the system. The agency’s commissioners had a chance to weigh in on the decision that he said prioritized keeping employees healthy.

It’s the media’s fault, not the CPSC’s fault. A conservative will always deflect blame to someone else rather than take responsibility.

399
Anymouse 🌹🏡😷  Dec 12, 2020 • 4:17:28am

re: #398 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

An internal email sent to staff three days earlier, titled “Everyone,” was more direct: “CPSC employees working at the ports are instructed to perform all duties from their home worksite.”

Adler told USA TODAY the agency alerted the public with communications such as pop-up notices on its website that recall remedies might not be continuing as usual.

He said the agency must also weigh the harm that could come if companies know its blind spots and take advantage of them.

“Why would we tell consumers?” Adler asked.

It’s a quibble, but I’ll disagree. Both had/have charismatic personalities. They both could have been Fire and Brimstone preachers and done quite well. They both view(ed) the world as a hellhole in the present that only they could fix.

The Russian winter and the Global Pandemic were Black Swans which were fatal to Hitler and Drumpf because neither of them could accept what had happened and admit fault.

everybody always talks about stalingrad. the germans lost something like 1.5 million troops trying to take leningrad. the only reason they didn’t is because the elite panzer corps that was spearheading the attack got held up when russian factory workers went out and met them with old rifles. it isn’t that the panzer corps couldn’t have rolled over them, but the resistance wasn’t expected, and the general was cautious. it bought the russians just enough time to turn the battle into a years-long siege. russians can be some bad-assed motherfuckers when it’s demanded.

Thing is, people will support a leader even in times of economic crisis if he shows resolve and demonstrates that he is working hard to help the country recover.

But Trump was struck like a deer in the headlights. I think part of it was fear that he would lose his revenue streams to his heavily-leveraged properties, and declaring bankruptcy to banks in Russia, China or Azerbaijan would look really bad.

And part of it is just that he is incapable of leadership or of finding and delegating competent people to act in his name.

But let us not forget: had it not been for the Covid crisis, he probably would have won the election.

Panhandle Public Health District has not updated the weekly positivity rate for my area since November 29.

On that date, it was rising through 58.6%.

Total deaths now stand at 95.
My county is at 7 (+1)

Active cases: 1,512

The same three villages have had no cases.

Trump is a Kennedy era democrat. That makes him “right leaning” at this point but it doesn’t change what he is. That was fine because for all of Kennedy’s faults he at least tried to do more right than wrong by the country to the point that the CIA assassinated him. Trump is the same way in that he’s trying to do more right than wrong.

He’s used to people around him doing what they can to make the company grow because they benefit when it does. He’s not used to people around him screwing him over because they profit when the country is weakened. That’s the problem everyone here is now blatantly aware of. It doesn’t matter if Trump is doing everything he can when everyone around him that he needs to rely on is out to sink the country for their own benefit.

This is why my niece in Maryland is getting story books and a newborn Baby Gund teddy bear as gifts for her new baby boy. Everyone else was buying her a shit ton of newborn/premie clothing (he weighed in at exactly 5 lbs at birth) which he will outgrow in a few months, along with all kinds of toys which he wont be able to play with for awhile. Its never too early to start reading to a child, so Aunt AMA will be making sure the little dude has his own library.

So last night the husband and the kid went to see a band a close family friend is in. The club had a stage set up outside and masks were required. On the way over there they stopped to pick up an old friend of ours we hadn’t seen in awhile. His wife had breast cancer last year and had to have a double mastectomy. They have turned into right wing lunatics, even moreso than I ever knew. He showed my husband pics of them in Valdosta at a Trump rally whenever that was, a week or so ago. No masks, no distancing, just happy as two stupid brain dead clams. I was, and should not have been stunned. Her immune system is compromised from chemo and radiation FFS. Her hair still hasn’t grown back FFS. Her 80 yr old mom lives with them and they have a 22 yr old son who is on the autism spectrum and has bi-polar disorder, among other issues. My husband told him to just STFU about Trump because there is no way in hell it would remain civil. And he’s pissed, he said if he had known that shit he wouldn’t have bothered asking the guy to come along. ALL of my friends are like this now. ALL OF THEM. Which is why I have no friends anymore. I cannot bring myself to be accepting and kind anymore with this shit. Last time my husband was hospitalized not a single one of them bothered to show up at the hospital or even call to see if we were ok. I’d rather have no friends than friends like this. It wasn’t always this way, but the right wing politics this group developed over time is just disgusting. They’ve become spoiled, selfish, tribal as fuck and mean. That’s the shit I have a hard time forgiving, same crap happened to my parents and siblings. I’m just glad my husband and son have been smart enough to flip off the assholes in their lives who do this shit. I can’t forgive the GOP and all their fear mongering horseshit for any of this. Ever. They belong on a historical ash heap and used as an example of how NOT to act like a decent human being.

You’re actually not wrong. If you got a closer look at the haunts I spent my formative years visiting - Valparaiso, Merrillville/Crown Point (basically twin cities, literally separated by one stretch of road), Hammond - they were extensions of Gary in all but name. “Going into town” was a functional task, not something we did for amusement or to see something cool or exciting, but a dedicated trip to get something or do something and then come back home.

It’s simple: Trump’s tantrums get them business. They want him to keep posting his shit on their platform, because it instantly makes headlines. Even for years after he leaves office (voluntarily or otherwise), his tweets will continue to be front and center, because he will be a disgraced former President and people still hold former Presidents with some kind of regard.

I can only assume it is a business decision that is based on a number of factors, including Trump’s popularity and his position as an elected official.

Yes, and probably based (unlike Trump’s tweets) on some basic facts:

1. He’s still President Pathetic Coward, and can’t be completely ignored.
2. President P.C. still has a loud and large fanbase who can (and will) get pissed if they ban The Orange Anus (delusionary wingnuts they may be, but they still all have two eyes which might fasten on ads).
3. They REALLY don’t want to get into issues of regulation of their media - from either side.

Actually 8 incumbents have lost in that time period: Cleveland, Harrison, Taft, Hoover, Ford, Carter, Bush and Trump. Cleveland got more votes than Harrison in both ‘88 and ‘92, but Harrison won the electoral college in ‘88. Incumbents now have a 22-11 record all-time. Considering the small sample size, there is little evidence that incumbency confers a significant advantage.

I really don’t think that’s it. It’s not simple numbers - Trumpers are a minority in even this country. Yes, they are a very vocal minority, but in sheer numbers, any media company would get more numbers by simply engaging with the majority. The reason must be more ideological. Specifically, the few people that make editorial and narrative decisions are more philosophically aligned with the autocrats, and the culture at these companies is aligned with the dominant US culture, where the worldview of mediocre white people is ‘normal’, and everyone else is ‘abnormal’.

Isn’t it because still - several centuries on - they’re still stuck on the Catholic-Protestant thing??

And on a more worldly level: in a lot of (non-political) ways NI HAD “joined the rest of Ireland” via the now-former common EU membership. Yet, IIRC, the pull of “unionism” seems to have still been strong enough for Ulster’s political structure to support Leave - even if the population in general was lukewarm.

Some of them are okay, but they do not generate the same level of enthusiasm or interest (on my part) that the first one did.

I remember wondering back then if, some 50 years later, those movies would look as outdated and corny as Buck Rogers or early 60’s science fiction, but they have held up well technically and conceptually, which says a lot about the people who made them and the work they put into it all.

My daughter and I lost interest in the Mandalorian halfway through the first season. Take out all the star wars references and it was hard for us to see what was compelling about it.

What’s compelling about the Mandalorian without talking about Star Wars is…

A: The emotional journey of a man thoroughly unprepared to be a father none the less having to try his best to fill that role because he doesn’t trust anyone else to do it and isn’t coldhearted enough to let a child go unprotected.

B: It is a classic western serial of our protagonist drifting from town to town needing to resolve some particular problem at each town. See old shows like Maverick or Have Gun Will Travel. The scene in the first episode of season 2 when he rides into the town on a bike and everyone looks on wearily is very very western from what I can tell, likewise the entire “we need to get the natives and the townsfolk to team up against a bigger threat” trope.

The Mandalorian handles Tusken Raiders more respectfully than any of the other mainstream Star Wars works (the first Knights of the Old Repbulic game went into their culture a lot but I’m not sure that qualifies as “mainstream” at the moment), but that does invalidate your argument.

Agreed on those comparisons. It is a very common formula.

I would compare Mandalorian to Firefly. They were harboring a fugitive from planet to planet all while fighting bad guys.

Firefly did not have the advantages that Mandalorian does. It created its own immersive universe and memorable characters.

It stood on its own merits.

The Expanse!

Great book series. I really liked the series but it went off the rails after the first season and I had to force myself to watch it.

I thought the Prime series put it back on track and would watch it even if I didn’t read the books.

I feel that the Mandalorian manages to stand on its own merits pretty with the Star Wars references being neat little side treats, like how having knowledge of Marvel comics enriches but is not necessary to enjoy the MCU films, but inevitably your mileage will vary.

Also Firefly was very much an ensemble show while Mandalorianhas only two main characters, one of whom has to communicate more or less completely non-verbally.

To be clear I like/love Firefly, my family somehow wound up with like three copies of show on DVD to go with our one copy of Serenity, but it differs from the Mandalorian in more than just creating its own universe.

The question isn’t whether they are a minority, the question is their presence on social
media. Only about 20% of the adult population even uses Twitter, and about 2/3 of these are male. Twitter’s interest is in those who use their product — you cannot engage with a majority of the population, when in fact that majority has no interest in spending their time with what you’re selling.

Yes, counting algorithms always get screwed up by … counting. See it all the time.

I get enough Twitter indirectly here…
