Trump Refuses to Tell His Cult to Stop Rioting

This is not shocking in the least. Everybody with a functioning brain could see it coming for years. This is the legacy of Donald Trump and his complicit Republican Party.

They were openly plotting to kill him. If he had been in the building when it was breached, he would’ve been shot, and while I hate his guts, I actually wouldn’t want him to be a victim of this fucking mob. That’s too good of a death for him.

“Amen.
It’s a disgrace (and one of historic proportions), it’s a travesty of “security”; it’s a dangerous, unsafe and untenable situation; but it’s not a “coup”. Not even (AFAICT), an attempt at one, since - despite the shame of having the safety of our national legislature (in formal session) threatened by an armed mob of extremists, there is no likelihood of ANY change in the government outside of what has already been confirmed* by the elections, and which will be conducted according to Constitutional parameters.

*Congressional formalities notwithstanding.”

What do you think they are trying to accomplish? They aren’t just trying to be heard. They are trying to ensure Trump gets 4 more years. That’s a coup attempt. The fact that it won’t be successful doesn’t make it any less of an attempted coup.

A coup or coup d’état ; literally “blow of state”; plural: coups d’état, pronounced like the singular form; also known simply as an overthrow, takeover, or putsch) is the removal of an existing government from power, usually through violent means. Typically, it is an illegal, unconstitutional seizure of power by a political faction, the military, or a dictator.

Right now it is an attempted coup. If it is successful (usually defined as seven days) then it is a coup.

en.wikipedia.org

This is not a riot. It is not riots in several states simultaneously. Christian pastors, right wing politicians, influencers on social media have all been calling for this for weeks.

I do have to raise the counter-argument: Is the government out of power? They could resume business off-site elsewhere. The government is displaced, but not dethroned. They aren’t setting up shop in the House and Senate chambers and proclaiming themselves the New American Democracy or anything. They could’ve tried; that would’ve honestly been kinda scary.

Impeachment and removal from office is the obvious response, and Congress could (and should) get it done today.

But too many Republicans in Congress are fellow travelers of violent right wing white supremacists for this obviously necessary thing to happen.

re: #108 darthstar

Biden calls on Trump to get on TV now. I wish he also called on him to step down.

I sort of expected that when he started with the “call on him to go on TV,” but I think that this is better in that it puts Trump on the spot to do something about the riots he inspired.

It’s not even 5:00 yet. The cavalry is on the way.

“Simultaneous state house breaches” weren’t simultaneous, as far as I can see. They were responses to what was happening in DC. And they haven’t happened in 47 states. If this is a coup, it’s making the beer-hall putschers look like military geniouses.

And the Beer Hall Putsch was, in the words of William Shirer, “a comic opera affair”.

It was, of course, inspired by Mussolini’s March on Rome, which was one of the greatest bluffs in modern history - and it worked.

There was better security at Nakatomi Plaza. This was allowed to happen and the fucking GOP fanned the flames. And not only at the nation’s Capitol, but also in Kansas, and I read they’re protesting at Washington state’s capitol as well.

There isn’t another way to qualify how easily a bunch of white terrorists took over what should be one of the most secure locations in the country. It simply wouldn’t happen.

Are they in control of their spaces, particularly the Capitol, the flagstaff which now flies Trump’s flag and not America’s, or Nancy Pelosi’s office?

They’ve only been there a couple hours.

They are also raiding state capitols.

The 25th amendment is useless because it relies on Trump’s cabinet to get him out of office, and they are all hand-picked swamp creatures that by now exclusively feed on Trump’s bodily secretions.

Impeachment and removal from office is the obvious response, and Congress could (and should) get it done today.

But too many Republicans in Congress are fellow travelers of violent right wing white supremacists for this obviously necessary thing to happen.

If it is known to them that they too will be held complicit in a coup attempt and will serve a Minimum of 20 years in prison they will go along with Pence in invoking the 25th. This fact should be made plain to them by Biden on TV. No more pussy shit.

To be fair, the current length of transition is mandated by the Constitution, not something that Congress can easily change because modern transportation and correspondence makes such lengths of time seem prolonged. Plus it helps give the new administration (in theory) time enough to get set up so they can hit the ground running, rather than spending the first weeks setting up shop and getting all the furniture moved in.

re: #190 ericblair

Yes, but the opposition in a parliamentary system has a shadow cabinet ready to go; the incoming US President doesn’t. There’s a need for a transition period, but not this long anymore. The US Constitution is just too hard to amend.

Yeah, good point about a shadow cabinet. Maybe two weeks should be sufficient in the case of the US.

Per CNN
A White House adviser said some aides around President Donald Trump are becoming furious that the President won’t do more to stop the insurrection at the Capitol. The adviser said aides have been all but begging Trump to come out and make a statement to begin to calm the situation.
“He doesn’t want to” to do more than what he is doing right now, the adviser said.
“If we could throw him to the angry mob, we’d throw him to the angry mob now,” the adviser said.

Probably longer, honestly. In a parlimentary system you have (mostly) non-partisan career civil servants fairly high up the chain of command in departments. There are 1,200 positions in the federal government that require Senate approval and approximately another 2,800 that don’t require advice and consent. That’s a lot of people to get into position.
