Colbert: SNL, Late Night Shows Probed by Feds Because No. 45 Couldn’t Take a Joke

Today we learned that the former president, upset about jokes made at his expense on television, asked the FCC and Department of Justice to probe Saturday Night Live, Jimmy Kimmel Live and other late night shows, presumably to pressure them for more favorable coverage. #Colbert #Comedy #Monologue

If twice impeached Donald Trump did not try to investigate you, perhaps you were not trying hard enough. Just kidding of course but where did it end?

Pedestrian bridge collapse on Route 295 in DC. All lanes blocked, injuries reported. No ETA on when route will reopen.

It’s not clear if a vehicle struck the overpass causing the collapse, or whether the vehicle that struck the overpass was the one that ultimate got stuck underneath. Investigation is just getting underway.

Trump has no idea of how government works. This is just another example of his cluelessness in that regard.

re: #5 DodgerFan1988

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation that requires public universities & colleges survey students, faculty and staff about their beliefs and viewpoints.

This is the 1st step toward George Orwell’s thought police.

One has to wonder what he will do with this info.

The article I read clearly indicates that he will use it as reason to cut funding to universities who either refuse to go along or who do cooperate and don’t provide the “right” answers.

He needs some excuse to do so and “countering liberal lockstep brainwashing” seems to be a good one.

Trump has no idea of how our government is supposed to work. But that’s irrelevant to him; he knows how the Trump Organization works and that’s the model he intends to impose on our nation, with some additional features prominently available in Putin’s Russia.

People don’t understand metaphors or fables; they need the lessons spelled out to them in simple words. Aesop didn’t just tell a story; he also provided a simple phrase to summarize the lesson.

1/6 insurrectionist treasonweasel is about to show what the weight of prison feels like for those who aren’t taking deals:

66-73 months per sentencing guidelines, with upwards adjustments for advance planning. People who don’t take plea deals will find prison to be their home for the foreseeable future. Fuck those people.

First to cut deals tend to get best deals. Those who refuse will find themselves fucked (legal term). Fuck them. They sought to overthrow the government, and deserve every day in prison from now to the end of their days.

With that in mind, the most helpful version of the New Testiment I’ve read is this: The Jewish Annotated New Testament by Amy-Jill Levine
Essays, commentary, and excellent translation notes about how both the Judaism of the era and early Christianity intersected and split and where they still have agreement. For a non-fundamentalist who actually is interested in these things it’s a glorious book.

Even when they don’t get the metaphors, they flat out refuse the plain and simple teaching: “for I was hungry, and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty, and you gave me drink. I was a stranger, and you took me in. I was naked, and you clothed me. I was sick, and you visited me. I was in prison, and you came to me.”

It doesn’t get any simpler than that and most utterly ignore it.

They just see it a little differently.

“for I was white and hungry, and you gave me food to eat. I was white and thirsty, and you gave me drink. I was a white stranger, and you took me in. I was white and naked, and you clothed me. I was white and sick, and you visited me. I was in white and in prison, and you came to me.”

If this is a way to prepare the grounds for infighting between the Jared+Ivanka and TFG, and public and private backstabbing, or better yet giving evidence to Federal+State prosecutors. Go PR guy.

But really, this is just a way for Jared + Ivanka to attempt to rehabilitate themselves…. they and everyone else in TFG’s inner circles shouldn’t be able to be rehabilitated, but the both-siders media will do anything for a ratings bump.

BTW - there’s a thought-provoking essay about Twitter trolls that breaks things down in clinical terms, which I always find equally illuminating & creepy:

Are Twitter trolls mentally ill?

Nut Graf:

This is a marvellous, sympathetic piece on BPD; the metaphor it uses is that people with BPD are cognitively “lighter” than neurotypical people. That is: if you are heavy, it takes a lot to move you. So when something quite nice happens to a neurotypical person, it makes them slightly happier: the wind only moves them a little bit. When something quite unpleasant happens, it makes them slightly sadder.

But if you are cognitively light, then the same events will move you much further. A small victory will make you thrill with joy; a small problem can make you suicidal (and BPD patients have a tragically high suicide risk in their younger years). It also applies to people’s opinions of others: “Either a relationship is perfect and that person is wonderful, or the relationship is doomed and that person is terrible,” as the NHS page on BPD puts it. This is called “splitting”, and again, it’s easy to think of it as someone being light, rather than heavy: being blown on the wind of events.

People with these conditions feel emotions much more strongly. But they also have difficulty forming a strong self-image, and often take on very visible identities, such as being a Goth or a fan of a particular band, dyeing their hair or getting tattoos, in order to give themselves something solid to cling to.

The crazy screaming fits we see at school board meetings are the result of Borderline Personality Disorder meeting the Fox News propaganda network that incites them to frothing rage.

Isolated, stupid people who feel they have been “picked on” and who want to lash out, but need someone else to point them at an acceptable target.

No, just a misdemeanor.

She pleaded guilty to a single misdemeanor charge under a deal with prosecutors.

In seeking probation for Lloyd, prosecutors noted that she was not involved in any violence and destruction or preplanning and coordination of the Capitol breach. Lloyd was invited by her hairdresser to drive to Washington to hear then-President Donald Trump speak, her attorney wrote in court documents.

U.S. District Court Judge Royce Lamberth said he was giving her a “break,” but didn’t want others to think that probation — and not a stiffer sentence — would be the norm.

McAfee was on the run for tax evasion, and we’re talking he owed fully-fund-third-world-countries amounts of money to the IRS. He was facing essentially the rest of his life in prison. He was 75 years old. Once that order of extradition came down, he ended his life. It’s as simple as that.

There was McAfee on Hunter Biden’s laptop!!! It’s obvious to all what is going on!

So I walked down to the barber shop on Pine Street in San Francisco this morning to get a little trim…no before/after pics because my phone is a brick right now…but I sat down, took the rubber band out of my pony tail, shook my head, and said it’s been 15 months since I had a trim. Barber asked me if I wanted him to shorten the pony tail or if I wanted to “return to normal.” I said a return to normal sounded good. A good 10+ inches of hair fell to the floor soon after and I felt lighter than I can recall.

Then I went to the ballpark for the soft opening of the Public House (since the missus invited me)…she was pleasantly surprised not to have a long haired freaky husband show up.

He never filed tax returns for tax years 2016-2020 inclusive. Counts 1-5 of his indictment include up to 5 years in prison and/or fines of up to $250k per count. Counts 6-10 include up to year in prison and/or fines up to $100k per count.

He was also charged with bilking investors in his cryptocurrency in SDNY.

The guy was a one-person crime syndicate.

I have the opposite situation. I’ve been keeping my hair at 2mm during the pandemic, and now need to grow it out before a barber can get me back to my regular hairstyle.

Biden administration removes Rodney Scott as head of U.S. Border Patrol

The Biden administration has forced out the head of the U.S. Border Patrol, Rodney Scott, clearing a path for a leadership overhaul at an agency strained by a 20-year-high in illegal border crossings, and whose top officials were broadly sympathetic to President Trump.
…snip…
Scott’s departure was widely anticipated, with several of his current and former colleagues surprised he remained in the post long after President Biden’s inauguration. During last year’s presidential campaign, Scott appeared several times alongside Trump, eagerly defending his hard line policies, leading some colleagues to privately express concern that Scott’s enthusiasm occasionally veered into partisanship.

I think that this about covers it.

A massive country music festival in Kentucky this past weekend started off on rocky footing: Police found meth, marijuana, and an open bottle of alcohol in the first vehicle they stopped at a traffic checkpoint. One of the people in the car had two active warrants out for their arrest.

“We were like, ‘Well, this doesn’t bode well for the weekend,’” Edmonson County Sheriff Shane Doyle told the Lexington Herald-Leader.

By the end of the five-day bash, dubbed the “Redneck Rave,” one man had been impaled, one woman had been strangled to the point of unconsciousness, and one throat had been slit. In all, Edmonson authorities arrested 14 people, and charged four dozen people from five states.

True story…

When I was in the Army I attended Officer’s Basic with an immigrant from Thailand who had a very long Thai last name, ‘Arnoukounpittaya’ iirc. It was always interesting to be in formation at Zero-Dark-Thirty and watch the sergeant stuck with calling roll stumbling over his name. Particularly because his name was the first on the roster.

After a few failed tries the sergeant would usually fall back on Lt. ‘Alphabet’.

The ‘Thai-guy’ was a really nice, quiet and extremely competent guy. (And prior enlisted serviceman.) He never said a word about this issue.

Years later when I bumped into him, he had changed his name to ‘Jones’. I respect that change. Sometimes life is too short and there are too many other issues to address, to die on that hill.

At my office the Asian people all used American names until one of them didn’t, and then they all realized that they could use their real names without anyone going insane, and did so.

The British Government drove him to suicide.

Turing was prosecuted in 1952 for homosexual acts; the Labouchere Amendment of 1885 had mandated that “gross indecency” was a criminal offence in the UK. He accepted chemical castration treatment, with DES, as an alternative to prison. Turing died in 1954, 16 days before his 42nd birthday, from cyanide poisoning. An inquest determined his death as a suicide, but it has been noted that the known evidence is also consistent with accidental poisoning.

The UK gov’t has only made so many strides, and that’s all too apparent by how swiftly they’ve ramped up with the transphobia and generally created a crisis for British trans folk within just the span of a couple years. Not helped by a similarly shitty media environment.

When social Conservatives get their way, anyone who isn’t a straight white Christian is in jeopardy every time. They need to stop getting their way, and it has been reported that Conservative kids aren’t down with their parents’ bigotry. I worked for 10 years with a lot of Lao, Vietnamese, and Chinese people. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the (white) bosses generally figured that all the Asians knew each other and could speak to each other in some sort of Star Trek common native language. Not so, obviously.

The bosses repeated this when they assumed a long-time Russian employee would be able to translate for Bulgarian guy because the Bulgarian’s name was “Dmitry Popov”

It took him a couple of years but Dmitry worked his ass off to learn English. I’ve tried half-assedly my whole life to learn various other languages and mostly failed.

My sister-in-law said that when they were in school in Malaysia (a ways back when there were still a lot of English ex-pats and such in the system there) that they were all given an English name early on and sort of carried that along as one to use when they dealt with English speakers rather than their usual Malay or Chinese name.

Thus I knew my sister-in-law as “Jenny” rather than by her Chinese name.

And this wasn’t a one-off since I knew some other Malaysians via work or some other social connections who essentially were following the same system.

Top Florida political players scrutinized in Artiles case ahead of August trial (Miami Herald)

This regards the guy the GOP paid $50,000 to appear on the ballot who had the same name as a Democratic candidate.

A public corruption investigation that took root in a single Miami-Dade legislative race has roped in prominent players across Florida over the last several months, including a GOP-linked research firm in Gainesville, a top not-for-profit Miami hospital network and a veteran Republican operative who leads a Tallahassee-based political organization.

A circuit court judge on Wednesday announced the trial would begin August 30. Records obtained by the Miami Herald show that since at least April, investigators have been flexing their subpoena power to gather information from an array of people and organizations and financial records that go back several years.

The eight-month investigation is focused on former Sen. Frank Artiles, a Republican operative, Alexis “Pedro” Rodriguez, an auto-parts dealer with financial woes and an alleged plot to successfully sway the outcome of Miami-Dade’s Senate District 37 race in favor of the Republican candidate.

Prosecutors allege Artiles recruited Rodriguez — a longtime acquaintance who used to live in the district and had the same surname as the incumbent Democrat — and promised to pay him $50,000. In return, Rodriguez would change his party affiliation from Republican to no party affiliation and enter the race. The no-party candidate got more than 6,000 votes in a race decided by just over two dozen, ousting incumbent Democrat José Javier Rodríguez after a manual recount.

Alex Rodriguez, according to arrest documents, believed Artiles would pay him because the Republican operative told him: “We have money in an account.” Ultimately, the actual amount Artiles paid Rodriguez was around $45,000, some of which came from stacks of cash stored in Artiles’ Palmetto Bay home, prosecutors say

In one shop I worked with a guy from Taiwan and another from Mainland China. It was interesting to hear them talk about their experiences with language when they were growing up. (As a courtesy, they always spoke in English when I was present.)

Taiwan still taught the traditional Chinese character system, while Mainland China taught the Romanized alphabet. The two used to talk about and compare their experiences, compromises, strengths and weaknesses of each system.

They also would talk about their experiences with how Chinese literature and culture were handled in each system. The Taiwanese guy mentioned one day, that his family used a traditional Chinese poem as the basis for naming each member of the family. The mainland guy was apparently as surprised as I was to hear of that tradition.
