This is from a Fark post under a story on the latest crypto grift. The bolded may explain a lot. Watching Fox is also an alternative path to intellectual confidence for people who don’t understand anything.

toraque: How do people like this even come up with $380K to lose in the first place? I feel like I’m doing something wrong here.

My brother is prone to these types of get-rich-quick scams, he’s not particularly bright but tries so hard to find alternative paths to intellectual confidence which lead him continuously down these garden paths towards the scammers.

But he is very adept at being cheap and hording his normally earned money between rounds of discovering the next big scam to lose it all. Frankly the only reason I bet he hasn’t lost yet another proverbial shirt on the crypto scams is he was too cheap to buy his own computer and once the pandemic started our parents cut him off from showing up to borrow theirs (he’s anti-vaxxer too, because of course he is).

But the guy in the article sounds like he leveraged loans as far as he could and even convinced his ma to lend him 100K to throw away on this stuff, he’s a class way beyond my brother.

Indiana lawyer Jim Bopp, who has authored model legislation for anti-abortion state lawmakers to adopt, said “the 10-year-old Ohio girl who crossed state lines to receive an abortion in his state should have carried her pregnancy to term and would have been required to do so under his law,” Politico reports.

Said Bopp: “She would have had the baby, and as many women who have had babies as a result of rape, we would hope that she would understand the reason and ultimately the benefit of having the child.”

this got 60 upvotes on disqus:

“She’s not a woman. She’s a child. A child who was raped. Violently. And forcing birth in this way makes you and your kind the most horrid, despicable, and vile people on earth.”

It was a match made in heaven, or maybe in hell: the sexual deviant and the lingerie demigod.

For decades, disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein was one of the closest friends of Victoria’s Secret billionaire Les Wexner, 84. In fact, the late con, who, in August 2019 at 66, committed suicide in the jail cell of a Manhattan federal detention center while awaiting trial in his sex-trafficking case, once joked that he and the retail baron “share a brain.” (It should be noted that Wexner has claimed complete ignorance of Epstein’s sexual misdeeds.)

But in the forthcoming Hulu docuseries “Victoria’s Secret: Angels and Demons,” out Thursday, associates of the unlikely duo — Wexner, a self-made magnate from the Midwest, and Epstein, a college dropout who smooth-talked his way into roles in New York’s financial district — say the two were bound by more than ambition.

They each needed the other in order to survive.

“Wexner had the money that Epstein was seeking, and Wexner got from Epstein the glamour and smoothness that he was seeking,” says Cindy Fedus-Fields, the former CEO of Victoria’s Secret Direct, in the three-part saga directed and produced by Matt Tyrnauer of “The Reagans” and “Studio 54” fame.

you know, the DOJ is supposed to be an independent government agency, supposedly charged with investigating federal crimes and with subpoena capacity…

seems to me that they have the capability to do their own work and if they are at pains to not seem partisan, asking for notes/data/transcripts from the J6 Commission (which is indeed partisan in makeup - tyvm Mr. McCarthy) in order to supplement their own unknown investigations seems a bit out of tune.

the J6 has stated that yes, they’ve stated that they will share their data when they finish their task/mandate but considering the sloth-like pace that the DOJ has shown (and to be fair, just who was left at the DOJ when Garland took over and have they actually cleaned those stables of the corruption of Trump Taint), I can understand their reluctance to simply “turn over all their work”. Congress has some timelines, DOJ supposedly does not based on their mandate.

Like, trying to evade the question, redefining what is an abortion and what is not on the spot in an attempt to not be forced to admit the other side is right. Also, pay attention to her answer. “If she was raped and the condition was life-threatening”. Technically, a 10-year olds life isn’t threatened until she develops (pre)eclampsia, her uterus tears or any of the other complications for pregnant girls that young.
And the girl being justifiably suicidal because of the trauma the perp caused would not be life-threatening, because it isn’t because of the pregnancy, hence it’s as good as saying that “she’s just saying she’s suicidal because she wants an abortion”, or “she’s been told to threaten suicide so she can have an abortion”, or “she’s been told to threaten suicide so she can make the result of her s💣ty behavior go away”.

the J6 has stated that yes, they’ve stated that they will share their data when they finish their task/mandate but considering the sloth-like pace that the DOJ has shown (and to be fair, just who was left at the DOJ when Garland took over and have they actually cleaned those stables of the corruption of Trump Taint), I can understand their reluctance to simply “turn over all their work”. Congress has some timelines, DOJ supposedly does not based on their mandate.

Isn’t John Durham still hanging around as Special Counsel, doing Trump’s will and shedding any shred of respectability he may once have had?

Special Counsel Durham fails first courtroom test in his three-year probe (NPR, May 31, 2022)

A jury in Washington, D.C., has acquitted lawyer Michael Sussmann on a single charge of lying to the FBI, dealing a blow to the three-year investigation by special counsel John Durham.

Tax cuts will create jobs for the 10 year old. IIRC, Newt’s big idea was for kids to pay for “free” lunch by working as janitors at their schools.

That piece is “old news” (May 31), but yeah, AFAICT, Durham is still “on the job”; though that job has long since ceased to have any relevance.

Just MHO, but Durham’s “job” never really had much relevance anyway, outside of being a figleaf for a cheap political hatchet-job on TFG’s “enemies”: my feeling is that DoJ isn’t simply firing his useless ass just to avoid even the vaguest appearance of “political bias”.

The current hazard of the currently circulating varieties of COVID (which are highly transmissible: Dr Stack said one person on average will infect 18 others with this current strain) is if you don’t vaccinate, you have a better chance of being hospitalized or dying, then those who do vaccinate and follow the usual precautions when out and about. Dr. Stack did point that out in his presentation.

Dr Stack acknowledges that, which is why he’s relying on hospitalization/death numbers now.

My PA at the local clinic told me that in our county, people who are self-testing are not reporting positives because they don’t want to be quarantined. As a result, my county is now back in the red numbers. These selfish assholes are positive and deliberating going out to infect everyone else because they don’t want to be inconvenienced (and you KNOW they are also refusing to mask). So transmissibility in my county is no doubt much higher than 1:18.

Additional comments re Durham .

Based on the breathless “reporting” on FB by the Trump cult when testimony as explained by Tucker et al was guaranteed to prove Hillary committed some crime or other, followed by absolute silence when the trial resulted in a speedy acquittal, it does seem to me that as speculated above, it may be better to allow this disgraceful persecution to continue than to open up the DOJ to nonstop accusations of suppression of damaging evidence. If Republicans take over the House, they will likely have constant investigations supporting Durham, at least when they aren’t investigating Hunter’s laptop and manufacturing Biden’s tenth impeachment.

Another great Issac Bailey column:

Lindsey Graham still fighting subpoena, still embarrassing South Carolina

Lindsey Graham just can’t quit embarrassing South Carolina, or at least my fellow South Carolinians who care about our democracy.

In his latest caper, our unmasked uncapped crusader has been admonished by a judge in Georgia. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney told Graham to mosey on over to our neighboring state and take a seat before a special grand jury. Why, pray tell, is a judge in Georgia making such a demand of the senior senator from South Carolina? Funny you should ask. It’s a long story. It’s short, actually: Graham’s love of power is his guiding light, and it finally got him into a little trouble.

My Ivana Trump story (AFAICT, only one or two degrees of separation):
Some years ago (2003, I think) I was riding the chairlift at Aspen with a local, and we got to discussing celebrity skiers, and he mentioned an incident which was still being talked about (and he said he had witnessed). Donald had come up there to ski, and encountered Ivana on one of the lower slopes. She started to yell at him (obviously still pissed), so Donny took off downslope to avoid her. However, Ivana (a championship-level skier) simply took off after him, and followed him down - skiing backwards all the way, and screaming curses at him in Czech. Trump supposedly fled into the base lodge and didn’t emerge again all day…..

A Wordle party game is coming out this October

As reported by CNN, Wordle: The Party Game is a physical tabletop party game built to emulate the experience of playing the original puzzle game that swept the world earlier this year. According to Hasbro, this game came together faster than most of its other board games, taking less than a year to fully plan and develop. It will be out on October 1 and can be pre-ordered today.

Wordle: The Party Game supports multiple players, co-op and a few different modes, including a classic mode that closely recreates the original gameplay of Wordle, along with a faster mode that limits time and word guesses.

The party game will ship with transparent yellow and green tiles, so you can mark correct letters and placement just like in the original game. Players will use dry erase boards and markers to make guesses and figure out the word. The board game also comes with an official word list from Wordle’s owners, the New York Times. Though you can also use any words you want, assuming they are five letters long.

As a reminder, on July 16, dialing all telephone numbers in the United States and Canada must use 1 plus the area code. Telephone companies will block all calls only using seven or four digits.

(Folks in town are going to have to get used to this.)

I don’t think that you’ll need to dial 1 before the area code unless you’re calling long-distance. We transitioned over to ten-digit dialing a few months back in preparation for 988 service, and I haven’t had to dial 1 before the area code for local calls yet.

EDITED TO ADD: According to the FCC’s consumer guide on ten digit dialing, you shouldn’t have to dial 1 before the area code for local calls. You still have to do it for long distance calls.

fcc.gov

What is Ten-Digit Dialing?

A ten-digit dialed telephone call requires entering both the three-digit area code and the seven-digit telephone number to complete the call, even if the area code is the same area code as your own. When an area code transitions to ten-digit dialing, you will no longer be able to dial seven digits to make a local call.

Transitioning to ten-digit dialing will not affect your current telephone number. Your phone number, including your area code, will not change. In California, some parts of Michigan, and in Illinois area code 708, you may be required to dial the number “1” before the area code and seven-digit phone number for local calls.

Opinion MAGA Republicans don’t speak for America. So Democrats should.
Jen Rubin
washingtonpost.com

At a time when America is hyper-tribalized and right-wing news outlets are working overtime to conceal the truth from their audiences, this represents a remarkable level of consensus. It should serve as reassurance that a solid majority of voters haven’t lost their minds.
It also suggests Democrats would be wise to rethink a couple assumptions. First, instead of running from “cultural” issues in favor of “pocketbook” issues, Democrats should stress the clash in outlook between the large majority of rational, respectful voters and the delusional MAGA camp. Now is no time to mince words: The current GOP is nuts and unfit to govern.
Second, Democrats have understandably looked to the federal government to protect fundamental rights, including the right not to be gunned down in schools, stores and at parades. But as a matter of necessity, Democrats now must focus on state and local elections in a way they have not done previously. They must invest resources in all elections, from governors to state supreme court justices to district attorneys. Those races have become nationalized insofar as gun safety, abortion access and respect for election results have now been dropped on the doorsteps of state and local politicians.
Democrats should welcome the opportunity to make elections all about their values (respect for women, safety for communities, the rule of law, truth, nonviolence). They should do this in every race up and down the ballot — and not just in this election but for the foreseeable future.

my emphasis

Jackson revealed the email in an upcoming memoir called “Holding the Line: A Lifetime of Defending Democracy and American Values” obtained by Fox News Digital. The outlet reported Jackson sent a tweet during the 2020 election questioning Biden’s mental fitness.

“Remember the cognitive test that I gave @realDonaldTrump? The one he aced! Sounds like somebody else might need some testing done!! Scary!!” Jackson tweeted at the time with a video of what he called Biden’s “latest cognitive misadventure.”

Jackson sent the tweet while he was running for Congress, and said he was shocked to receive an email from Obama about 20 minutes later, according to Fox News Digital.

Obama told Jackson he spoke well of him “in public and private,” avoided talking about Jackson’s work in Trump’s administration and thought of Jackson as a “friend.”

“That’s why I have to express my disappointment at the cheap shot you took at Joe Biden via Twitter. It was unprofessional and beneath the office that you once held. It was also disrespectful to me and the many friends you had in our administration,” Obama said in the email.

“You were the personal physician to the President of the United States as well as an admiral in the U.S. Navy. I expect better, and I hope upon reflection that you will expect more of yourself in the future,” Obama concluded.

In high school I was just an average student in my French class, but I got A- on pretty much everything because my teacher really liked me. She liked to talk about existentialism as much as teach the language, but I wasn’t a quick study of French philosophy either. It began with a couple of girls in front of me who liked to pass notes. One day, Madame turned around from the chalkboard in mid pass and one of them dropped the note. She asked, “who did that?” And without thinking I raised my hand. She took me aside after class and both chastised and praised me for my chivalry. This post reminded me of that moment:

I have NEVER seen four-digit dialing. Never ever. And I still remember my mom’s old phone number from 1969. Seven digits.

My grandmother’s phone still had a disk in the middle of the rotor that said “Fleetwood” in the 1970s. I think that was some sort of code?? It wasn’t used anymore in the 1970s, but here rotary phone, which weighed about 20# and had years of dust and wax buildup must have had 4+F or something. I’ll have to ask my dad. Oh, wait. He can’t remember anything anymore.

We had four digits within the local SHerman exchange my first year or two of school. Say 1970ish. Then it went to five until Jr high? High School? Somewhere in there they upgraded the switches downtown and we went to all seven numbers.

I’ve seen 5-, 6-, 7- and 8-digit dialing. 5-digits until that area code was put together with the 08 area code (all became 5xx xx xxx numbers), I have an 8-digit and a 7-digit phone number, and there are 6-digit ones in the 08 area code still.

The first two digits of the exchange were alphabetical. An old number in my city would have been “PIoneer 4-xxxx”, the exchange would be 744-xxxx. There is a website with the old names of many US exchanges, and it is firmly imbedded into American culture (“Pennsylvania 6-5000”).

My mom grew up in a Mayberry type town of about 400 people. Everyone would call the dispatcher who sat on the second floor above a general store (which was also the post office) to ask if she had seen their husbands recently from her perch above the only intersection in town.

ETA: Ok, Mayberry in the sense that the Black people were not really considered part of the population.

National Grid has estimates. You must be able to see their website on your phone, and the cell tower must have power. Neither of these requirements have been always met.

We were Redwood 2-xxxx back in the day. We were also on a party line for awhile. You never did get used to picking that 2 pound handset and, instead of a dial tone, you heard Maude and Mabel discussing what was overheard down to the beautician’s shop.

Here in Sweden, the IN AG would be facing charges for filing a false prosecution or false charges to police. Had the case gone to court, it escalates to malicious prosecution. 4 years in the slammer tops.

I found out in town that the last business in my county that accepted credit cards no longer does.

The Co-op discontinued accepting credit cards due to major credit card companies charging both ends of a charge (merchant and purchaser).

Co-op in Nebraska will start issuing its own credit cards for customers on July 20. In the meantime, they accept cash or cheques.

Like BMW lying with their heated seats, if credit card companies can get enough people to accept this, you’ll be seeing it everywhere.

I have. When we bought out first summer place in Berkshire County MA in 1993: the phone system still let you reach numbers in the local calling-prefix area by dialing just the last four digits of the number. This changed about a year or two later to require dialing the entire seven+digit number: but it still (AFAIK - I haven’t used the phones up there for a couple of years)

My town was like that in the 50s. My husband really liked it, because he could find whoever he was looking for. The operator would say, or the veterinarian just stepped into the drug store; I’ll ring him there for you.
