rehearsal footage from my phone. i just didn’t want it to be lost forever by accident since i’m upgrading to a new iPhone today…so i uploaded it for the internet to hang on to for a while.

if i’m being completely honest, i think these takes are better than the ones from the concert? but that’s the funny thing about music….each performance is different.

The Fearless Flyers are
Nate Smith - drums
Cory Wong - small guitar
Mark Lettieri - medium guitar
Joe Dart - big guitar

An addendum to my complaint to Hilton in the last thread.

I looked up Hampton Inn’s firearms policy. According to Hampton Inn, firearms are strictly prohibited on their property (including concealed carry, even with a permit). The only exception is for authorities like police officers.

So the desk clerk taking the side of the negligent firearms owner at the hotel was defending violating her own employer’s policies.

As a hotel person, that may be different between Hilton owned properties and franchise properties. Some things like that may be left to the owner’s preference. Note, I’m in the IHG food chain, not Hilton.

I’d have the idiot on my “do not rent” list but that’s a separate thing.

I just read an article about a couple who stayed in a different Hilton property in Tulsa a couple months ago who had bullets come through the wall of their room.

They got corporate boilerplate about franchise versus corporate-owned. The thing is, the corporation can absolutely require the franchisee to follow their rules if they chose to do so.

The couple points out months later they are still traumatised by the experience, and entirely underwhelmed by the response from Hilton.

The local FOX station sent an investigative reporter to the hotel to stay in the same room. She noted that there is no way to tell if the hotel is a franchise vs. corporate hotel (no signage).

Interesting. Signage is Required here at this Franchise owned hotel. Sounds like it’s a company to stay away from as both guest and employee.

Florida flesh-eating illness cases spike after Hurricane Ian (BBC, four hours ago)

Standing water left over from Hurricane Ian coupled with overwhelmed sewage systems has led to a sharp rise in one form of so-called flesh-eating bacteria. This particular form kills one-in-five people, and has killed twenty-nine people in Lee County, Florida so far.

Health officials there are warning people of the dangers of wading through standing, brackish, or hurricane-flood waters.

LOL

The Belarusian MoD said today that Russia plans to transfer 170 tanks to Belarus, but so far we see the opposite process. Without any statement last week alone, Belarus handed over at least 92 T-72A tanks and dozens of trucks to Russia.

Depends on the profits they made from the sale of cement in war torn Syria, doesn’t it?

It reminds me of the Texas Commission On Environmental Quality who would fine a refinery down in Houston $1.5 million dollars for an “upset” release of unpermitted carcinogens and half of it would go to the refinery buying $750,000 worth of cop cars and ambulances for the local community which would result in a tax Credit which would pay off the entire fine from Corporate Taxes.

Nice scam, eh?

Formula One.

Another 120,000 of our dearest friends will invade our fair city, but at least they will travel east to the venue, not wander through my neighborhood. It’s also one of the top weekends for Signature Flight Service, a Fixed Base Operator, who will host a shitpot of private aircraft from all over the world.

Since 2015 when tfg first appeared, there have been articles on the goals of the very rich and powerful men supporting him.

According to these articles, the goals are anti-institutionalist. Often called libertarian. Basically to destroy the institutions that maintain the guardrails for US democracy in general, and the economy in particular. The objective is to seize even more power and riches.

Basically what Putin has done to Russia.

My state senator Steve Erdman (R-Covid denier) is involved in this culture-war bullshyte.

LINCOLN — Three weeks before an election in which concerns about education could motivate Republican turnout, five conservative state senators called Monday for a legislative investigation into the Nebraska Department of Education.

The senators said one of their staffers found a link in June to a New York University center for culturally responsive education on “Launch Nebraska,” a state Department of Education website built for schools reopening during the pandemic. Two or three clicks into the NYU website, they found a document defending critical race theory and discussing racial justice. The document, however, was never directly accessible on the state’s website.
The Nebraska Department of Education website that five state senators objected to Monday. Until June the site had linked to a New York University center where a legislative staffer found the material. (Screenshot)

State Sens. Dave Murman of Glenvil, Steve Erdman of Bayard, Robert Clements of Elmwood, Steve Halloran of Hastings and Myron Dorn of Adams said they want the Legislature’s Education Committee to investigate who shared the link and what else was shared. They also said they want to know who might have promoted a new sex education curriculum.

Why do Republicans love pardoning rapists?

Legion members protest pardon for fellow veteran for ‘heinous’ sex assault (Nebraska Examiner, October 14)

The American Legion says they were used by the convicted rapist to gain a pardon from the state pardon board. That board is made up by the state governor, the state AG (who voted to pardon), and the state secretary of state (who voted no).

He was convicted of raping his ex-wife after breaking into her home and tying her to her bed in front of their five and seven year-old children, then kidnapping the children and fleeing to Texas. He completed his sentence in 2008.

The pardon removes him from the sex offender registry and restores his gun rights.

A former state Legion commander said that not all Legion members supported the pardon of a sex offender and that the Legion cap is only supposed to be worn at official or Legion-sponsored functions.

Beth Linn of Scottsbluff, who served as state Legion commander from 2016-17, also said that while Arias has claimed the sexual assault was a “misunderstanding,” it was far from it.

“Raping your wife in front of her kids while she’s tied to a bed is not a misunderstanding,” Linn said.

A group of Legion members, including Linn, have planned a “peaceful protest” of the pardon on Oct. 28 at 10 a.m. at the Nebraska State Capitol.

Also it’s going to be at least two years or more before I could ever afford an expensive bike. So in the meantime I’ll get an extra battery, new flat pedals with nice grabby pins my pins are rounded on 3 sides and have some edge on one side), a good dropper post (I miss my old one but it was a cheap thing that got replaced when it broke and the replacement broke all in the first 9 months), tubeless tires, or even just a replacement back tire that is almost a slick at 4000 miles. Big mistake not getting the larger nut-busting 26” tire version. I did not know 24x4” tires were impossible to find. Tubes are hard enough. That’s about all I can upgrade on the Blackbird.

again, the Fundamentalist argument is that Herschel Walker may have strayed, but he begged God for forgiveness and God redeemed him. Amen.

Except even that argument does not work, as in order to be redeemed, you have to own up to your actions, which he never did. He denies them to this day, so the GOP is now both accepting his denial and forgiving him for what he ostensibly never did.

This is really disgusting so I posted behind privacy tags. You. Were. Warned.

A custodian at a Houston medical office building was arrested after allegedly urinating in a water bottle belonging to a coworker who later contracted an STD.

Since the disgusting ordeal came to light, 11 other victims have come forward and are being tested for STDs, according to court documents obtained by KHOU.

The victim began bringing in her own store-bought water bottles everyday after getting water from a dispenser in the office in August that tasted and smelled funny, she told investigators.

If she didn’t finish her water during the work day, she would leave it on her desk to drink the following day, the woman said.

As the days went by, the woman noticed that the water she had been bringing in herself started to smell nasty as well, but could never figure out what is was, according to court documents.

Fears are growing inside Russia that Vladimir Putin is preparing to declare all-out war on Ukraine, amid speculation the increasingly desperate despot could resort to a nuclear show of force over the Black Sea as his invasion fails.

Putin will today hold an emergency national security meeting, with the Russian senate ordered to sit late so they can rubber-stamp any directives.

At the same time his new commander in Ukraine - Sergei Surovikin, dubbed ‘General Armageddon’ - appears to be preparing the ground for a retreat from the city of Kherson.
General Surovikin on Tuesday said the situation in the southern Ukrainian city is ‘tense’ and that people living there will be ‘resettled’ in order ‘to protect the lives of civilians and our service members’. ‘We are not excluding the most difficult decisions,’ he added.

Evacuations got under way today as Vladimir Saldo, the Russian official overseeing occupied Kherson, said up to 60,000 people will be moved over the next six days - suggesting the city could fall within a week.

The administration is also moving, Saldo added, while vowing Russia would ‘fight to the death’ to regain full control.

He knows that any use of even tactical nuclear forces will have a large psychological effect on Europe and generally be much more detrimental to their economy that to Russia’s.

Lowering the Nuclear Threshold can never be seen as good news: people are going to be hesitant to invest in a part of the world where nukes are going off.

He is also counting on Russia being able to weather economic downturns longer and more quietly & obediently than Western Europe.

re: #97 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

Nuclear show of force?

Yeah, that’ll end exactly as Putin planned it out.

It’ll go precisely as well as his plan to invade Ukraine did.

That’s why this talk is just saber rattling. Even he’s got to know that his military is fubar and he can’t count on his nuclear arsenal to do any better than his regular military forces. They’re as likely to see those nukes launched and fall on Russian territory as it would in Ukraine. The NATO and Western response would be to consider nukes against military targets inside Russia, and US and NATO tech is vastly superior to what we’ve seen out of Russia.

It also is a reminder that Russia’s relying on Iran for cruise missile tech at this point (those UAVs loaded up with small munitions). That’s a tell that Russia’s military is hollowed out and can’t get it done.

It would almost certainly invite a massive conventional military response that would effectively annihilate the Russian military in the Donetsk Basin (unless they wise up real quick and hastily retreat back to Russia proper) and very likely send his Black Sea Fleet to the bottom.

Kara Voght, a writer for Rolling Stone, said the quiet part out loud about John Fetterman.

Then her husband had a stroke four days before the primary for the U.S. Senate. Suddenly, the reluctant political spouse became the de facto candidate. “I just had to survive, I just had to go,” she says of that time. Did she consider asking John to step out of the race? “It wasn’t my decision to make,” she says. “If you have the ability to make lives better, then it’s your duty to do so. And if he has the green light from every doctor, then I support that.”

Nearly 10k leases that oil companies are keeping dormant. They’re doing nothing with them, because they profit from high oil prices. Anything that would reduce price would make it harder for them to start new wells, because there are higher costs domestically to tap into those wells and bring to market.

Saudi oil is cheaper to produce than here in the US. You need a higher oil price for domestic oil to compete with foreign oil.

That’s why Trump went to the Saudis to cut supply in 2020 - to keep domestic production afloat. When prices drop below production costs, the oil companies get shellacked.

Now, they’re raking in record profits.

So what can a president do? They can release from the SPR. And that’s what GOPers are caterwauling about now. They’re complaining that Biden’s going to release from the SPR lowering the costs to consumers.

That’s right folks - the GOP hates American consumers. They hate Americans and hate the American economy because they want the economy to tank so they can benefit politically.

Fuck the GOP.

We were talking the other day about the horror that was Belgian Congo.

Behind the hide is a photo of what that was like:

So the Tories have taken a few months in order to throw some woman and minority MPs under the double-decker bus as scapegoats for further failed policies?

GOPers projecting like IMAX. They’re the pedophiles, sex predators, and engage in kink shaming who attack the LGBTQ+ community incessantly for their lifestyles.

LGBTQ+ are attacked nonstop who are accused of being sex predators and child molesters. Right wingers push bathroom bills and want govt so small that they fit up in the naughty bits (checking sex/gender, insisting that ppl are identified not as they wish to be) - and they’re the ones who engage in all kinds of malfeasance.

Nothing against masturbation: I mean, I’m the one who started the rumor it adds an extra 3 minutes to your life for each successful attempt, but what the fuck….in the truck on a campus? “Oh man, hot coed! Maybe I can rub one out in the 10 minutes before I get fingerprinted for the campus security gig….”

It is a matter of RW doctrine that all the President has to do is build more pipelines, open more public lands and offshore sites to drilling while loosening cumbersome environmental, health and safety legislation, and we will have an abundance of cheap gasoline.

Cheap only because it ignores all the costs associated with the environmental damage inflicted on the planet, including health costs for individuals.

You could start building on every one of those 10000 leases today and the price of oil/gas would shift zero.

US government (our tax dollars) gives $20 billion every year on direct fossil fuel subsidies. Those should stop at once. Let people see the real cost to all of us, even people without cars are paying the oil industry.

We were talking the other day about the horror that was Belgian Congo.

Belgian King Leopold II was forced to cede his private Congo colony to Belgium in 1908.

Leopold went to great lengths to conceal potential evidence of wrongdoing during his time as ruler of his private colony by burning the archives. The burning went on for days.

Leopold told his aide that even though the Congo had been taken from him, “they have no right to know what I did there.”

re: #188 steve_davis

Leopold began to create a plan to convince other European powers of the legitimacy of his claim to the region, all the while maintaining the guise that his work was for the benefit of the native peoples under the name of a philanthropic “association”.

The king launched a publicity campaign in Britain to distract critics, drawing attention to Portugal’s record of slavery, and offering to drive slave traders from the Congo basin. He also secretly told British merchant houses that if he was given formal control of the Congo for this and other humanitarian purposes, he would then give them the same most favored nation (MFN) status Portugal had offered them. At the same time, Leopold promised Bismarck he would not give any one nation special status, and that German traders would be as welcome as any other.

Leopold then offered France the support of the association for French ownership of the entire northern bank of the Congo, and sweetened the deal by proposing that, if his personal wealth proved insufficient to hold the entire Congo, as seemed utterly inevitable, that it should revert to France. On April 23, 1884, the International Association’s claim on the southern Congo basin was formally recognized by France on condition that the French got the first option to buy the territory if the Association decided to sell. This may also have helped Leopold to gain recognition for his claim by the other major powers, who thus wanted him to succeed instead of selling his claims to France.

He also enlisted the aid of the United States, sending President Chester A. Arthur carefully edited copies of the cloth-and-trinket treaties that Stanley (a Welsh-American) claimed to have negotiated with various local authorities, and proposing that, as an entirely disinterested humanitarian body, the Association would administer the Congo for the good of all, handing over power to the natives as soon as they were ready for that responsibility.

According to what I’ve read, Leopold began the practice after he started harvesting rubber in the Congo, as punishment for workers not meeting their quota.

Dunno if it continued after the Belgian government took over the colony.

Why is Texas currently doing so well with their handling of COVID? Number of cases is no longer a useful metric, but death rate over the past 2 weeks is less than half of Illinois though their vaccination rate is 62% compared to our 70%? And their hospitalization rate is lower than ours and still declining?

The mailers for the GOP US Rep candidate* in this section of PA started out with the standard dribble. Have now moved to the new buzzwords like “woke” in their dribble.

And today moved to an interesting bit of hypocrisy since they charge to Democratic candidate having just “parachuted in” to run for seat as a sort of carpetbagger.

* - Actually stuff from a PAC and not the candidate’s campaign directly. A pile of money into campaign signs and mail flyers in this race. Very little in the way of mailers from the other campaigns in this region. I am sort of surprised there hasn’t been a mailer from either party with their slate attached so you know who to vote for. (I was getting those from the Democrats in Chester County the past few years regarding their local candidates down to even the school board level.)
