We were prepared to go to court to successfully ensure certification at the local and state level - and we were confident we’d win in court. But blocking certification in Wayne County and pushing this to the courts would still delay and create enough doubt and uncertainty to enable the Trump campaign to push Pennsylvania, which was certifying the next week, to delay as well. And we knew other dominos would fall after that.

How could we overcome the pressure of the then-President of the United States on local and state officials? Were the facts and law not enough?

Well, then something I’ll never forget happened.

Hundreds - hundreds (!) - of citizens showed up to the meeting of the Wayne County Canvassing Board to remind them of their duty under the law to ensure their votes counted. Their voices mattered. Their votes mattered.

In my view that turned the tide. Citizens and election officials in Wayne County and statewide didn’t flinch, stood firm, and demanded their votes be certified as required under the law.

And in the end, the Wayne County Canvassing board fulfilled their legal duty, followed the law and certified the election.

There are times when even the good guys must show up in large numbers.

A few minutes ago I got bright sunlight outside while it was finally raining significantly here in SoCal. Wasn’t sure if the Sun was too high for a rainbow, but went outside just in case. Got this. You’re lucky to have SCE for your power company. If a rainbow got entangled in the power wires here in northern california, which is “serviced” by PGE, it probably would have caused a massive wildfire and taken out a couple of towns.

Personally, this is more like “You’re with us or against us, and if you’re not 100% with us you’re against us.” Politics requires compromises.
And as for “but he aligned himself with Bernie!!!!!” remind me how much legislation, progressive or otherwise, that Bernie has introduced and gotten passed.
It is hard to understand when you’re idealistic. I will be thinking of positive reasons to vote for Democrats when I canvass in 2024. It’s important to know where people are and validate their view if you want them to consider changing it.
But sure, let’s sit this one out…arghgggggg. “Earn my vote!”

Supreme Court won’t expedite a ruling on Trump’s claim that he is immune from prosecution, leaving issue to appeals court for now

Special counsel Jack Smith, citing Donald Trump’s upcoming March 4 trial, asked the Supreme Court to rule quickly on whether the former president is immune from prosecution over actions he took while in the White House. Trump’s lawyers opposed the request to expedite the appeals process, saying the issue is too important to rush and accusing Smith of trying to influence the 2024 election.

This opens up the March trial date for the Manhattan D.A., because those felony charges are for actions Trump took before he was president, so presidential immunity doesn’t apply.

No, not any decision, a ruling on Trump’s immunity claim. It means that D.C. cannot try Trump until after the DC Circuit court rules on his appeal, then Trump appeals to SCOTUS, and SCOTUS rules. In all likelihood, the DC trial will have to be rescheduled, and SCOTUS could potentially delay it until after November.

I should say, however, that we should remember that this is the same Court that didn’t lift a finger to help Trump in 2020. It is very possible that there simply aren’t four Justices who think there is merit to Trump’s immunity claim, and that they will deny cert after the DC Circuit affirms Judge Chutkan’s ruling, and the trial will still be able to proceed in March.

However, don’t be surprised if Trump tells his cultists to go to ballot centers and “fight like hell” to stop the counting of “fraudulent” ballots, and they respond violently. This is exactly why Trump should be barred from public office, as the drafters of the Insurrection Clause intended.

My snap reaction in #44 was a bit pessimistic. There is a very good chance there will be no significant delay, and the DC trial will proceed in the Spring or early Summer and go to the jury before election day.

I think it’s natural to assume the worst, especially with the Calvinball Court. I think this ruling is more to ensure that the proper forms are followed, so that Trump doesn’t have a leg to stand on should he later complain that the DC Appeals Court was “bypassed” in the process of determining his immunity.

There are two questions that need to be answered. First is the immunity, and the president like many goverment officials has immunity from prosecution for official acts, and they are arguing making sure the election was fair and not stolen was on the “outer perimiter” of offical acts.

The second question is double jeopardy, wether the impeachment and subsequent acquital in the senate immunizes him from being tried for the same things in court. There are a lot of legal questions that could set precedence for basically the rest of US history.

So that paper on how big is Youtube has a website: tubestats.org

From which we learn that 8.672% of Youtube videos are available through Youtube Music.

Even though only 5.284% of videos on Youtube are given the category of “music”.

Anyway, 8.672% means that YouTube Music can play over 1.155 billion videos.

That’s a lot of music (by which is also included no doubt TV/movie trailers, etc.).

It seems that there are as many ways to do this as there are people on the planet, but I’m going to ask anyway.

I have an 8lb brisket that we are going to eat at lunch around 1pm on Christmas day. I would like to have it cooked and rested for then, and be able to get some sleep. And I’m going to cook it in the oven. I bought a dry rub that I think my family will like.

So, what I am trying to narrow down is how can I cook and rest it so I can also sleep. I would actually prefer to stay up late and finish cooking it and then let it rest slowly if possible.

I saw a couple of different resting methods, wrapping it towels and putting it in a cooler, and sticking it in the oven. The towel method seems preferable, but I saw times between 4 and 8 hours on that. Someone with experience would be helpful.

Pressure Cooker Jewish-Style Braised Brisket With Onions and Carrots Recipe

Ingredients
5 pounds (2.25kg) beef brisket (see note)
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons (30ml) vegetable oil, plus more if needed
3 pounds yellow onions (1.3kg; about 5 large), sliced 1/4 inch thick
1 1/4 pounds carrots (560g; about 8 medium), cut into 3/4-inch dice
3/4 pound celery (340g; about 5 large ribs), cut into 3/4-inch dice
6 medium cloves garlic
1/2 cup (120ml) ketchup
1/4 cup (60ml) tomato paste
1 cup (240ml) dry red wine
4 sprigs thyme
2 bay leaves

If your brisket is too large to sit flat on the bottom of your pressure cooker, cut it into pieces that will fit. Season brisket all over with salt and pepper. In an electric multi-cooker (such as an Instant Pot), set to searing mode or a stovetop pressure cooker set over medium-high heat, add oil and heat until shimmering. Working in batches, add brisket, and brown on both sides, about 6 minutes per side (the exact browning time will depend on your pressure cooker model; electric ones will generally take quite a bit longer than stovetop ones). Transfer brisket to platter or rimmed baking sheet, and set aside.

Add 1 to 2 tablespoons additional oil, as needed, if pot has gone dry. Add onion, carrot, celery, and garlic, and season with salt. Cook, stirring and scraping up any browned bits, until onions are very soft and any released juices have thickened into a glaze, 25-35 minutes (the exact cooking time will again depend on the type of cooker you’re using, with electric ones taking quite a bit longer); reduce heat at any point if vegetables threaten to scorch. The vegetables should have reduced significantly in volume by this time

Stir in ketchup and tomato paste and cook, stirring, until thick, about 3 minutes. Add wine and cook until raw alcohol smell has cooked off, about 3 minutes.

Add thyme and bay leaves. Reduce heat to medium-low or turn off searing mode on electric multi-cooker. Give the vegetables a good stir, scraping the bottom well all over (this will be your last chance to stir before closing the cooker); if vegetables are very dry, stir in 1/2 cup water to moisten. Add brisket pieces, nestling them well in the vegetables, and add any accumulated juices. Seal pressure cooker and bring to high pressure over medium heat or using the pressure-cooking mode of an electric multi-cooker. Cook for at least 1 hour at high pressure and up to 1 hour 30 minutes. Choose 1 hour if your brisket pieces are closer to 1 inch thick, or if they’re thicker but you want a little more chew to the meat; choose 1 hour 30 minutes if your brisket is closer to 2 inches thick, and you want it more tender.

Rapidly release pressure cooker or allow to release naturally, then open. Transfer brisket pieces to a work surface, and let rest until cool enough to handle. Taste braising liquid and season with salt, if necessary. Discard thyme sprigs and bay leaves, and skim off any excess fat if it’s there (this will depend on the cut of brisket). If the braising liquid is a little too watery, you can reduce it at this point by simmering it uncovered until it thickens slightly (in some electric multi-cookers, you may need to use the sauté or similar function).

Slice brisket thinly against the grain. Arrange on a platter and spoon the sauce and vegetables all over, making sure the meat is bathing in juices. Cover and let stand for 30 minutes in a warm place. Serve.

tip—For the juiciest brisket, try to use one that still has the second cut (also called the point or the deckle) attached. It has more intramuscular fat than the more common, lean first cut and will remain moister as a result. If using just the first cut, be sure not to trim any fat—it needs the fat for moistness.

slow roast in the oven 30-40 minutes a pound in a 250 degree oven
I usually do it in a Dutch oven or a roasting pan covered in foil
Done when the meat thermometer reaches 165 degrees

You can do it the day before, rest it (wrapped in foil) in the fridge, bring it out for 30 minutes, pop it back in the oven at 325 until internal temp reaches 165

Alternatively, you can wrap it in foil and leave it in the oven at 170 overnight.

‘Congress is a joke’: George Santos slams ‘meatball’ Republican in Delta Air Lines rant

George Anthony Devolder Santos is very upset that Delta Airlines can’t figure out what his name is and he wants Congress to act.

“Hey Anthony D’esposito, how ‘bout you do something, yah meatball?” Santos sneers in a viral video released Friday. “Congress is a joke.”

Santos’ 2-minute rant takes a long journey that begins with a boast about his Medallion status and ends with a call for overturning the entire government.

It also includes reference to unconfirmed accusations from the writer of an anti-trans children’s book who claims taxpayer dollars are paying for undocumented migrants to fly on Delta Airlines.

Delta Airlines did not immediately respond to Raw Story’s request for comment, but the children’s book author appeared very upset when an employee she demanded answers from replied, “What does it matter, they’re humans too.”

This outraged Santos, because he uses a shorter version of his name on his SkyMiles account and it causes trouble in airports, as it did in the House of Representatives and with the Justice department.

Hey, didn’t he forget a couple of his additional names?????

We go to Total Wine when we want something specific, or out of the ordinary, that our local place doesn’t have. Otherwise, it’s usually easier and cheaper for us to get “the usual stuff” from one of the two places more convenient to access.

I know. It was tongue-in-cheek. I meant no offense.

Also, is it me, or are the hamsters extremely unhappy all of a sudden?

I thought that was supposed to be last night, but I could be wrong. Nevertheless, we back now.

As everyone knows, yesterday was the Winter Solstice. And that means..wait for it…today is my Birthday!! I caught up to Joe Biden in numbers…Joe is only 32 days older than I am. It’s nice to be in such distinguished company.

Of course there was light snow for an hour but the good news is I was able to sleep in!!

Wife says we’re too old to move to the cold Middle Atlantic states. And there you are!! Happy birthday.

I don’t know what happened there, actually. The changes were made last night as I said, this was something else. I’m checking on it.

Yesterday at work, a shopper spent an hour telling me lots of fascinating things while I folded shirts. She was an ‘old lady’, until she mentioned that she graduated from high school 2 years before me.

From downstairs:

Ostia Antica, near Rome.

That was actually going to be my first guess. I was there this summer.

re: #179 Backwoods Sleuth

The victim, Elijah McClaine, worked for my son for a time last summer. My son says he was the nicest and hardest worker he’s had in a long time. Elijah suffered from a thyroid disorder where he could never get warm, even on a 95 degree day. He was always wearing very heavy clothes to keep warm. Once they were working on a paving project and Elijah asked if he could lay down on the very hot asphalt to warm up. The foreman said he didn’t care. Elijah did for a while and later said that was the warmest he had been in months.

Of course he was a black person and the cops thought he was a bad guy due to the heavy clothes along with the EMT’s thinking he was heavier than he was due to the heavy clothing.

He died way too young.

If you have a Bluesky account, you can find out your DID (Decentralized ID) value by appending your Bluesky handle to this URL and browsing to it. (Take out the extra spaces I inserted to hide it from the auto-link feature.)
