The internet just took a generation to lose its allure.

The promise of all the world’s information, democratization of communication in high school, to use in everything from genocide, propaganda, mind control, down to mere enshittification by middle age…

Justice Alito’s Beach Home Neighbors Sound Off on That Jan. 6 Flag

And they don’t really like it…

One woman, who can see the Alito home from her windows, said she objected strongly to seeing the Appeal to Heaven flag on his property.

“I don’t think you should be flying a flag showing his political position when you’ve got a job like he does, where you need to be impartial,” she said. “He’s entitled to his opinion, but I don’t think it should be so obvious when you’re a Supreme Court justice.”

Another local, who grew up in the area but now lives in the Pacific Northwest, was having lunch at Kubel’s, a casual spot nearby Alito’s house that was namechecked on TV by the late Anthony Bourdain. Sitting beside a clutch of family members, who still reside in town, “Marsha” said the flag “showed [Alito’s] bias.” These days, she went on, “People feel like they’re entitled to do anything they want. And the only opinion that matters is their own.”

“How far do we go before we normalize a lot of abnormal behavior?” asked “Stan,” a longtime South Jersey resident. “I’d say there are no words, but there are words.”

Alito’s flag-flying struck him as “about as dishonest as it gets.”

“Confidence in the judiciary has been shaken down to its bedrock,” the man said. “What [the right-wing] is really good at, is being really bad.”

‘Hot chili ramen noodle freak’ Peter Navarro complains about Miami prison food

After asserting he doesn’t want a pardon midway through his four-month sentence for obstructing Congress’s investigation of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, former Donald Trump trade advisor Peter Navarro has some complaints about prison food.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal’s Alex Leary conducted by email because visitors have been limited, the former Trump aide admitted that, after two months in jail, he is not a fan of prison food.

According to the report, Navarro claimed he is having to supplement his meals with food from the Miami federal prison commissary, stating “I’m a hot chili ramen noodle freak.”

Note that however rare a side effect is, the drug company is required to list it.

Almost any drug can cause gastrointestinal effects, so almost every drug lists that on their fact sheet. Most drugs aren’t tested on breastfeeding or pregnant women because drug companies are adverse to massive lawsuits if something goes wrong.

Drugs can have adverse effects with over-the-counter medications or herbal supplements, which are ofttimes not reported to a prescribing physician.

Some of the severe side effects on the drugs I take (behind the bar):

I’m sorry for what happened to your son and family.

Memorial Day has been degraded from “solemn occasion meant to reflect on those lost in combat” by moving to the last Monday in May as “unofficial first day of Summer, let’s bar-b-que or go to the beach.”

The VFW has agitated for years to return Memorial Day to May 30. Businesses oppose it.

Sunday the village will have a “reading of the names” of those killed in combat and buried at Rose Hill Cemetery. I’ll be there for that; I cannot go to Massachusetts where my father is buried.

Every Memorial Day I feel something uncomfortable that I think must be what is called suvivor’s guilt.
No one has ever accused me in person, or been anything but supportive but I still feel accused; as though I must defend my survival and must always come up short in doing so. I can imagine them asking, “Why are you still here, and my brother/son/husband is gone? How is it that you had the opportunity to grow old that was denied to them?”

I know in my heart of hearts, rationally that is, that it was just random. No divine intervention spared me for a higher purpose, as my first wife so foolishly thought, but I still feel an obligation. Something I owe to the dead. I pay that debt by bearing witness, telling people to the best of my ability what it was really like, and sometimes feeling that I have to tell them it was real at all.

re: #63 Shiplord Kirel: From behind wingnut lines

I get twinges of that from time to time even though I served only in non-combat (theoretically I was in during Gulf One but it was a cold day in hell before Bush Sr was going to send NG Combat Arms troops to the sand box. )

But I can remember those lost in training and stupidity. I can remember getting out and then seeing friends who stayed in and then didn’t come home from Gulf Jr.

Or worse, my step-nephew who was in a car wreck on his way to the “welcome home” party after his Engineer BN rotated back without any losses…

The Biden campaign is looking to hire a seasoned meme lord
Amanda Silberling
3:32 PM PDT • May 22, 2024

This is not a joke: According to a job listing, President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign needs someone to manage memes. The “Partner Manager, Content and Meme Pages” hire will “initiate and manage day-to-day operations in engaging the internet’s top content and meme pages.” The job pays up to $85,000.

Yes, it’s absurd to be a professional meme manager. But in this age, digital organizing is just as valuable as canvassing IRL at a farmers market. If a candidate is trying to meet voters where they are, then they need to be online, where going viral can mean connecting with millions of people. That’s why Biden’s campaign has a TikTok account, even though the president signed a bill that could effectively ban the app.

After mice drink raw H5N1 milk, bird flu virus riddles their organs

To show how idiotic are the fans of raw milk, many are purposefully drinking milk high in H5N1 believeing it will make them immune. That is not how it works. And the damn virus has up to a 50% mortality rate in those it infects.

And all it takes is someone co-infected by H5N1 (which is not easily transmitted between humans) with another human influenza virus and we can get reassortment, resulting in a highly pathogenic form that easily infects humans.

And then we have a worldwide pandemic possibly worse than COVID.

Yep, the same “values” that say that men are ignorant, lustful creatures who cannot control their base urges and are easily tempted, so not only is it totally okay with “God” for him to rape his wife, but she is to blame because she tempted him and failed to perform her “duty” as his wife by submitting.

Oh, and another “value” says if he strays to seek more “fertile” fields, then she is also at fault because she wasn’t addressing his “needs” adequately. And yes, “God” is cool with this…so long as he sends her a check for any kids they had because apparently the big man is not too broken up about that whole “kids need a Mom and a Dad” business if Dad gets them a new “Mom.”

Philip Elmer-DeWitt’s Apple 3.0 always has a nice Apple video on Saturday. This one is pretty astounding - Steve Jobs describing 40 years ago, in 1985, a potent use case for generative AI, without using those words. And he does it in a way that I have seen no techbro use. “Ask Aristotle a question… and get an answer”. In a little over a minute and a half, theeality distortion field projects a future that we ae just now entering.

I wonder what he would say about it today. I wonder what impact he would have on the conversation. Maybe someday soon, I can ask Steve Jobs a question and get an answer.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Team Apple,

Today, I want to talk about the challenges and opportunities that lie before us as we continue to push the boundaries of technology and innovation. Apple has always been about thinking differently, about pushing the envelope, and about making technology that changes the world.

Right now, we are at a crossroads. We face immense competition, rapid technological changes, and the ever-evolving demands of our customers. But with these challenges come extraordinary opportunities.

Firstly, let’s talk about competition. Companies are racing to catch up with us, and some are even trying to leap ahead. But remember, Apple has never been about the race; it’s about the journey. We need to continue focusing on what we do best: creating products that are beautifully designed, intuitive to use, and seamlessly integrated. Our competitors can copy our features, but they can’t replicate our vision and our attention to detail.

Next, technological change. The pace of innovation is accelerating. AI, AR, and new computing paradigms are not just buzzwords; they are the future. We must not only adapt to these changes but lead them. We need to think about how we can integrate these technologies into our ecosystem in a way that enhances our users’ lives. It’s not about being first; it’s about being the best at what we do and how we do it.

Thirdly, let’s address customer expectations. Our users expect a lot from us - and rightly so. They want products that work flawlessly, look stunning, and offer unparalleled performance. We need to keep our ears to the ground and listen to what our customers are telling us. Innovation isn’t just about what we think is cool; it’s about solving real problems for real people.

So how do we proceed?

We start by reaffirming our commitment to quality and innovation. We need to keep our teams inspired and give them the freedom to think creatively. The best ideas don’t always come from the top; they come from everywhere. We must foster a culture where every employee feels empowered to contribute to our vision.

We also need to be bold. Take risks. Some of our greatest successes came from taking leaps of faith - the iPhone, the iPod, the Mac. We need to keep that spirit alive. Not every gamble will pay off, but the ones that do will redefine the industry.

Finally, we need to remember why we do what we do. It’s not just about making great products; it’s about making a difference. We are here to create tools that help people unleash their creativity, connect with each other, and improve their lives. This mission should guide every decision we make.

Apple has always been at its best when it follows its heart, not the herd. We need to keep pushing forward, keep innovating, and keep believing in our vision. The future is full of challenges, yes, but it’s also brimming with opportunity. And with the talent, passion, and dedication of everyone in this room, I am confident that we can continue to build a legacy that will stand the test of time.

Stay hungry, stay foolish, and let’s make something great.

Thank you.

Daughter, son-in-law of Missouri state representative killed in Haiti

JEFFERSON CITY — The daughter and son-in-law of a Missouri state lawmaker were among three missionaries killed after being attacked by gangs Thursday evening in Haiti’s capital city.

Missions in Haiti Inc., a Claremore, Oklahoma-based missionary group, announced the deaths in a Facebook post early Friday.

It said the victims were David ‘Davy’ Lloyd III, 23, a son of the group’s founders; Lloyd’s wife, Natalie Lloyd, 21; and Jude Montis, 45, the group’s Haitian director.

Natalie Lloyd is the daughter of state Rep. Ben Baker [R], a Neosho Republican.

Trump ‘facing a hostile crowd’ in address to Libertarian National Convention

Ramadamadingdong didn’t have a good time!

NBC News reported that “if Friday night’s program is any indication, [Trump] could be facing a hostile crowd” in his Saturday address. According to the network, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy — a former GOP presidential primary contender now vying to be Trump’s running mate — tried and failed to reassure the audience that the 45th president of the United States was an ally of their cause.

“I’m speaking to you as a libertarian at my own core. I have gotten to know Donald Trump over the course of the last several years and the last several months,” Ramaswamy said, with the audience booing in response to his mention of the former president. He invited the crowd to support the presumptive Republican nominee, saying they had a chance to “influence” his administration if he won the November election.

However, libertarians present at the gathering were not as enthused about the ex-president during the convention’s proceedings. In a separate session discussing rules and motions, NBC reported that one libertarian stood up and suggested “we go tell Donald Trump to go f— himself.” That proposal was reportedly met with applause and cheers from the audience.

“That was my motion too!” another attendee said. “We are a Libertarian convention looking to nominate Libertarians. We do not need to give that time to non-Libertarians.”

The network further reported that another man responded to that exchange by starting a “f— Donald Trump” chant.

Libertarians’ lack of enthusiasm about Trump may be philosophical in nature, as the primary underlying fundamental ideology of libertarianism is the minimization of the public sector’s power and influence in society. Trump, on the other hand, has publicly stated views on his desire to expand the power of the executive branch, saying he would govern as a “dictator.” The pro-Trump “Project 2025” initiative by the far-right Heritage Foundation aims to consolidate executive authority even further and convert the bulk of the federal civil service into an army of more than 50,000 political appointees.

Convention attendees’ antipathy toward Trump suggests he may have an uphill battle to climb in order to attract swing state libertarians to his 2024 campaign. Avi Rachlin, who is a 22-year-old Michigan voter, told NBC that even though he voted for Trump in 2020, he plans to cast a ballot for the Libertarian Party’s candidate this fall.

“People say that a third party vote is a wasted vote. You’re voting for the other team,” Rachlin said. “And I don’t see it that way. I think it sends a strong message of disapproval with the current contenders for both offices.”

Libertarians arguably cost Trump several swing states in the 2020 election, which may be why he’s attempting to win them over on Saturday. In Arizona, for example, Trump lost the Grand Canyon State to President Joe Biden by less than 11,000 votes statewide. However, Libertarian Party candidate Jo Jorgensen won more than 50,000 votes in Arizona. Likewise, in Georgia, Biden won by just under 12,000 votes. Jorgensen, however, got more than 62,000 votes. Jorgensen also got 38,491 total votes in Wisconsin, where Biden beat Trump by fewer than 21,000 total votes statewide.

The Libertarian Party definitely wants national television and newspaper coverage. Angela McArdle (the party chair elected from the Los Angeles Mises Caucus) said as much.

It would be an utter shytefest if the same happened to Trump on a national stage as happened with Ramaswamy.

If his campaign staff can get through to him, I wouldn’t be surprised if Trump pulls out today before his speaking slot to avoid that.

Note to would-be gasoline thieves passing through rural towns.

Becoming more common in my town are people leaving out “bait” (gasoline cans with a small amount of fuel for the smell and mostly filled with water).

Tourists driving through town (particularly since we allow overnight camping free in the city park) have increasingly taken to stealing here because they don’t want to pay the high price for fuel at the general store, and it’s nearly 100 miles between stations here.

While county sheriffs here aren’t going to charge someone for stealing a gas can, the resultant damage to your car and cost to repair (plus sitting for hours waiting for a tow truck and the high cost to tow it to a mechanic) might make you re-think your choices.

From the pictures, most, if not all, those clams look to be way undersize in any case. Even without signs (they’re there), it should be obvious that they’re way too small.

Just for comparison, we used to dig up clams along the central coast back in the 60s (yes, our dad bought a license). They were all over the place and were, to my memory, quite large. By the time I went to college at San Luis Obispo in the mid-70s, clamming was already heavily regulated and finding legal ones was rare.

It is possible that this variant of bird flu has a much lower mortality rate among humans than the earlier variety… So far the people infected here have had mild illnesses. But it’s still true: drinking unpasteurized milk is a dangerous gamble in general, even without the possibility of bird flu.

Trump stands for banning abortion, creating a police state with concentration camps, cracking down on his enemies, including the free press, sham elections only he is allowed to win, and stiff middle class tax increases. He is as far from a libertarian as you can get.

Modern libertarian: A Republican who smokes weed. They care only about the rights of the wealthy, not anyone else.

But also, they are opposed to our involvement in international alliances or fighting on behalf of some other nation. They would never have supported our joining the Allies in WWII. Certainly that aligns with Trump.

‘It kind of ruined our trip’: Family fined $88K after trying to pick up seashells on the beach and making a costly mistake (Law & Crime, yesterday)

TL;DR: Pismo Beach clams are endangered. They require a state license to collect.

The judge reduced her fine to $100. She got a tattoo of a clam as a reminder of her day with her children at Pismo Beach. She says she wished the city or state had signage stating what’s legal to collect on the beach.

Reminds me of the ammunition smugglers in Turks and Caicos. The usual suspects in the media (Faux, NY Pest etc.) emphasized that the hapless Americans were potentially facing several years in prison for their carelessness. When the first one came up for trial, though, the judge said, “Sentence suspended, now get the hell out of here. Oh, and leave the bullets at home if you ever come back.” (Not an exact quote but words to that effect.)

I feel like, with few exceptions, most countries’ judicial systems have better things to do than sentence tourists to hard time for doing stupid shit (and potentially causing a diplomatic incident), so they’d just as soon give ‘em a weekend in the drunk tank, a suspended sentence, and a stern warning that they won’t be so lucky the next time.

Just going to remind everyone that you could see the inside of a Japanese jail if you stupidly attempt to inadvertently bring bullets into Japan. Also, most combo cold/flu medicines are prohibited, along with NyQuil. That’s because the dosage for at least one of the combo exceeds what’s allowed in Japan.

Americans need to be reminded that when you go outside of the USA, you’re not in the USA and our laws don’t apply. Hell, our laws sometimes don’t apply IN the USA. (See above for article about Louisiana attempting to restrict two abortion medications, which are otherwise legal in the USA.)

The Economist, yesterday, paywalled

A second human case of bird flu in America is raising alarm

“How close is the H5N1 outbreak to becoming the next pandemic?”

On May 22nd America’s Centres for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed a new human infection with the H5 avian influenza virus, a bug with pandemic potential that has recently spread rapidly among dairy cows in America. This is the second identified human case linked to the cow outbreak. Both are farm workers who probably got infected through contact with infected animals and had only mild symptoms. Although there is no evidence yet of human-to-human transmission, America’s public health authorities are on high alert. Half of the national pandemic stockpile of H5N1 vaccine is being made ready to deploy.

Influenza viruses infect many species and, every now and then, a virus will cross over and infect a species that is not its speciality. When that happens, it could be highly lethal for the new host species. H5N1, an avian influenza virus that has now crossed over into numerous bird and some mammalian species, is one of those with pandemic potential because there is no immunity to it in humans. In the nearly three decades since H5N1 was first detected in geese in China, there have been around 900 known human infections worldwide, usually from contact with infected poultry or other birds. Nearly half of these were fatal. Still, mild or asymptomatic infections would have gone undetected, making the fatality rate lower.

So it can “learn” but cannot be corrected, that is not intelligence.

It can be corrected, that’s easy enough. Train it some more on the relevant data and it will change its response. Ta da.

Except, that’s not the problem. The problem is that these systems do not have adequate world models to process this input and apply a lot of rules that we know through instinct and learning but it doesn’t. It doesn’t “know” how the world works to any great extent, and therefore that sort of output is valid for it.

It’s like trying to learn a language by repeating disconnected phrases, and getting corrected that you should use this phrase instead of that, but you’re never taught grammar or word meanings. So you can sort of bumble through some standard situations, but as soon as you get off your very narrow path you’re going to spit out a bunch of nonsense but have no idea that you are.

We barely avoided extinction of the buffalo. Came close though. Before white people came to this continent, there were millions upon millions. By the late 1800’s, it was down to just a few hundred. Now there’s a few thousand, but it’s taken a LOT of effort by a lot of people who want desperately for the species to recover.

I will honestly be surprised if as much survives of OpenAI in 20 years as does of, say the Xerox Dandy-lion as does at The Medley Interlisp Project a retrofuturistic software system now that it _finally_ got open sourced.
