It comes in time. I read someone else in an open registration say something to the effect of find 1 or 2 people or topics in a thread and focus on those, it'll feel like you're involved quite quickly. Basically, comment on what interests or offends you and gloss over the rest. Me personally, I like poking sticks at Cog and JMV, sparring with Kilgore Trout and avoiding Mandy's "Whack".

re: #24 MandyManners

Yes.

re: #31 MandyManners

Not really. Mostly volunteers with low pressure water hoses in a region where water is rather scarce. Equipment quality is low to non-existent in most of the poor neighborhoods. The richer neighborhoods, like the area around Achmeds post, various HAMAS strongholds, and former Fatah strongholds would have better equipment, if they wanted it. They don't. They smuggled weapons at great cost instead. All of their ambulances and other "government" vehicles were donated by foreigners and they have a tendency to get used up as pseudo-APC's by whomever is in charge at the time.

re: #37 MandyManners

Most likely. It's a small city, most everybody knows somebody and word gets around.

In spite of the fancy titles, HAMAS is little more then a really large street gang and although they are currently the most powerful gang in Gaza, (or were until a couple of days ago), there are many other gangs operating within Gaza. Alliances between the various gangs are very fluid and shift on a daily basis as the lower ranked gangs struggle for the scraps left by whoever is the top gang. almost everybody in the Gaza Strip is in one of those gangs, related to somebody in one of those gangs, or knows somebody in one of those gangs.

It's almost as if The Joker had taken over a small city that had no Batman.

In Olympia Queen Gregoire declares the solution to the $6 Billion deficit that happened on her watch a secret.

EFF asked to review these ideas, only to have Gregoire's budget office tell us this document was exempt from public review. Her budget office (OFM) claimed the document was protected by "executive privilege"---an exemption that doesn't actually exist in the Public Records Act. OFM also said it wants to protect deliberations within the governor's office, but since her budget has already been released, deliberations are over and this claim doesn’t hold water.

Zoomed out. Office building has several intact radio towers and a penthouse on top.

An indiscriminate enemy would have blown them off to deny their use.

Gazans are lucky to have Israel for an enemy - Russia didn't extend Georgians such courtesies.

Could anyone here imagine Israel being able to host an Olympics? Yet Russia will get the 2014 winter games only 10 miles from the border of Georgia.

To answer you question about my "girlfriend" I will repost something I posted this afternoon. Lizards who have already read this, please excuse the repost and scroll by...

said you could tell a lot about a "mate" by going on vacation for a couple of weeks.

Well, two years ago I took a girlfriend to France with the last of the "good" money I had made as a programmer. Bi the time we got back, well, that was all over.

And now I add getting to know someone when they have had a catastrophic accident, as my "girlfriend" has.

I have found her to be the most nasty, vain, entitled person I have met in a long time. She has no health insurance, yet she treats the hospital staff as if they owe her the world.

In my effort to help out, I have had to pick up on some of her personal finance and business problems. I am finding out all sorts of stuff that I didn't know. The utility company was ready to turn off her power yesterday because she has not paid her bill in 6 months, and she applied for assistance a few months ago. But I found out she lied to the assistance program 8 ways to Sunday.

She has called the person at the energy assistances program a "fucker," and talks nice to her physical therapist yet curses at him behind her back.

I find she has passed bad checks all over town. She told me she lost her ID and other things in her purse, yet I found out she had her girlfriend take all the papers and stuff out of the hospital so they wouldn't find out that she is gainfully employed in a retail store. She has told the energy assistance program and the hospital that she is unemployed.

And this just goes on and on. The stuff I have found out in the last 6 days could fill a file.

Part of the probation is no drinking, random BA tests, all kinds of counseling, etc. The counseling is something like $40/hour, the BA test has a fee. Every time she has to do something, there's a fee. She was told that if she could show a financial hardship, they'd waive some of the fees. All she had to do was provide her bank statement. She printed it out and faxed it in (they probably billed her to receive the fax). Her bank statement showed that she stopped at Starbucks every morning ($5 a pop) and made numerous liquor purchases, which is a probation violation. Hardship waiver DENIED!

I don't think you are being uncaring. I liked this person, but I wasn't "in love" with her. We both had certain interests in common, theatre, off beat movies, sex, but love, well, I'm not sure, at 56, if that emotion, at least in the younger erotic sense, exists anymore. I feel a bit more realistic about relationships, and not every one of them have to be based around falling "in love."

Falling "in passion" is alright sometimes.

Or, they could be using a directional mike, mounted alongside the camera. We hear the room noises, squeaky door, phone, Achmed blowing his nose, and street sounds. If the mike were elsewhere, no Achmed sounds......

re: #305 Promethea

I never watch TV news and views because I get so upset at the lies. My life is so much better without the slimy people and liars.

I kicked the TV news habit long ago. Only watch it when on the road.

Not sure if this has happened to anyone else here, but when I stopped watching the TV news, I just stopped watching network TV. There are about 4 cable stations I watch, but that is seldom - maybe 4 hours a week total. I probably watch more on DVD than cable.

Good thing is that the same now goes for my kids - we just don't watch TV that much anymore. The TV news used to start every weeknight evening with the damned thing on until the evening news. No longer and we live fuller lives for it. Anyone else?

At this point, unless she starts getting "snippy" with me after I explain why I would prefer not to see her anymore, I think I would be better off walking away.

I have found in the past that people like this usually wind up hanging themselves, and when they do, it makes more of an impression on them then if it was caused by someone else.

re: #252 Noam Sayin'

Isn't this camera a little high up for us to be hearing what I figure are "street-level noises?"

That just dawned on my as I listened to a couple having a conversation. The voices faded in, then away, as if they were walking by.

And right now, it sounds like there's a truck idling on the other side of the road.

Sound travels surprisingly far straight up -- nothing to block or muffle it. When I went skydiving, as I was floating under the canopy a few thousand feet up, I could hear kids playing in back yards, screen doors slamming, cars starting, etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if the mic was hanging outside the window.

We have some wonderful ancient cities. Just look at all the Anasazi cave dwellings, mesa dwellings, complex's like Chaco Canyon, some of this stuff going back to 200 BC. And the same thing applies to central and south America.

There are various types of directional microphones-hell the CIA types use 'em all the time. If it's aimed with the camera, whatever degree(30/60/90) of pickup it has will be amplified. And this is a city, where sounds bounce off the buildings. Roosters could be below, or in rooftop coops-their calls carry. I've got about 6 in my neighborhood, so I'll vouch for that.

Yes, but the dwelling (the mesa top villages) go all the way back to around 200 b.c.e.

They didn't move off the mesa tops into the canyon and cave structures until around 900 c.e.

re: #375 Walter L. Newton

We have some wonderful ancient cities. Just look at all the Anasazi cave dwellings, mesa dwellings, complex's like Chaco Canyon, some of this stuff going back to 200 BC. And the same thing applies to central and south America.

There is a lot of ancient history in our hemisphere. And I keep some of the reminds of those cultures in my apartment. You would be surprised at the craftsmanship of black on white and polychrome meso-american pottery.

Just went to Mesa Verde NP in November after a trip through Monument Valley.

You are right - great history, and you can walk through and touch the ruins in the cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde.

Got to talking to a Ranger about the Anasazi - I used the term and he stopped me. He asked if I had just come from the Navajo Reservation, which I had. He basically said that the Navajos are pretty much the folks who have brought Anasazi into use, and that it basically means "those from before who aren't us". He went on to describe how many of the tribes in the southwest (hopi, comanche, pueblo and many others) resent the Navajos as the newcomers, and that the Navajos arrived in the area shortly before the Europeans and pushed out a lot of the other tribes. The resentments last to this day, especially when one looks at the size of the Navajo lands (he said he has broken up fights at the park between Navajos and other native Americans). Anyway, the Ranger told me that the Anasazi are pretty much the pre-Navajo Peublos.

You probably know all of this, but I figured I'd share (and recommend Mesa Verde to any road tripping lizards).

Carl in Jerusalem is reporting that the IDF finally brought in five of its own fire trucks to fight the fire at the UNRWA compound. Carl mentions the UNRWA pathetic lie about not finding any sand in Gaza as well.

[Link: israelmatzav.blogspot.com...]

===

I believe this section of live blogging is the fighting that took place around the UNRWA compound.

[Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]

It was here that I saw several large rockets or missiles traveling from left to right across a dark city at street level, interspersed with long bursts of AK tracer fire. Followed by what appeared to be a single Merkava firing at least half a dozen main gun rounds and a lot of MG fire in return.

Out of all of the fighting we didn’t actually see on the Gaza cam, this flurry was by far the closest, and this is the same area where shortly afterward, as the sun rose, I saw the Apaches dancing in between 155mm artillery, 120mm WP mortar rounds, and 2000lb JDAM bombs, while flinging WP rockets of their own.

Although the tall building was in the way the entire time, as it still is, I believe that somebody has the entire fire fight, from start to finish, stored on their servers. I’m quite certain that the initial firing came from the direction of the UNRWA compound because that’s what caught my attention from what had been a fairly quiet moment on the Gaza cams.

Based on the firing directions I’m also positive that the second tall building (thicker then the taller building and to it's right) in those frames, the one that was hit in a corner window seven floors down from the roof, was actually hit by an arrant HAMAS rocket or missile fired towards the Merkava’s position.

WITNESSED,
R

The Ranger I mentioned in my previous post told us that they were Pueblo. He also noted that the cave dwellings were pretty much an architectural "fad" and proved impractical - they represent a short period in Pueblo history. He also mentioned that they had analyzed tree rings from the mesa and feel confident that the Pueblo left the area due to prolonged cold / dry weather. The Mesa supported corn growing when the Pueblo were there but that a climate shift may have made it no longer productive (perhaps they drove SUV's ;) . Another thing they have inferred from the archeology is that the Pueblo there were poorly nourished - they weren't genetically short - just short of nutrition. So the consensus, he claimed, was that the Mesa had advantages in terms of defensibility that diminished as the corn grew thinner.

That was Cliff House. It has the switchback path down the side of the canyon to enter the complex, but getting out, the park service has reconstructed a hand made ladder arrangement in the same style as the Anasazi would have had, and you climb out the way they would have on a daily basis.

The ladder is a snap compared to some of the cave dwellings which only had handholds and footholds pecked into shear rock walls. And they were made so you had to start with the correct foot and hand, and sometimes switching some place on the way up. This was to confuse anyone who didn't belong in the dwelling. If you didn't use your correct limbs, you would find yourself stuck halfway up, not able to make use of the correct "holds." (Did that make sense).

Right. Granted, we didn't have the large city type complex's as seen in the middle east, but our indigent peoples were hunter/gatherers, and only some of them started to settle and stay put after 900 c.e, and even then, they sometimes moved on to create other permenant living places.

We don't have the layers upon layers of city-type structures that The ME and Europe have. There is a lot more than meets the eye!

Here is an overview of the migration of the Athabascans which the Navajo come from (proven both genetically and linguistically). By this account, the Navajo arrived in the southwest around 1350 while Coronado arrived around 1540.

So the Navajo preceded the Europeans by about 200 to 300 years. The Pueblo/Anasazi go back to 9500 BC.

About the mics.

There are several cameras, of varying qualities. Some of them have very high quality mics with real wind screens. Some have the Middle Eastern equalivlent of a Radio Shack boombox mic. Some have no mic at all.

This mornings (EST) little "press" scrum we saw on Ramattan was actually quite informative. I saw a lot of very high quality portable video and audio equipment being handled by young men who didn't really seem to know how to use or handle that equipment.

Wondering if we should consider dragging the Chicago River...:)

Nah, he's OK. However, at this point he's a liability. Obama either values his council or Rahm has the goods on Barack. Either way, Obama can't just throw Rahm under the bus without it looking like an error in judgment on his part. So Emanuel will lie low, waiting for the Illinois State Senate to throw Blago out and the heat to pass.

We might be able to use that to solve drought situations--deploy Gore, he can just stand around until the snow comes down.

I myself have the ability to make the U.S. dollar plummet simply by leaving the country. It's the weird superpowers that count.

Well, whoever, it was a snub. Someone must have decided not to give her the attention she would have received. Either Mccain or Obama did not want to be upstaged I guess. It would seem the invite should have been automatic or certainly given if Mccain requested it. Maybe the facts will come out.

627 Render  Thu, Jan 15, 2009 10:50:27pm

re: #550 Render

Ok, as I was saying...

===

About the mics.

There are several cameras, of varying qualities. Some of them have very high quality mics with real wind screens. Some have the Middle Eastern equivalent of a Radio Shack boombox mic. Some have no mic at all.

This mornings (EST) little "press" scrum we saw on Ramattan was actually quite informative. I saw a lot of very high quality portable video and audio equipment being handled by young men who didn't really seem to know how to use or handle that equipment. And I saw a few older guys who seemed to know something about what they were doing but being overwhelmed by something they'd never seen before.

While there were a few cameras, jackets, vests marked with the Ramattan symbol, the vast majority of that stuff had little or no other markings. I got the impression that everybody who was wearing a blue helmet and or matching blue body armor vest was with Ramattan. Everybody else...well...

There were more then a few in that footage wearing dark green helmets and body armor with electrical tape markings like "T V" on them.

And I saw not one of the major Western MSM symbols. Not a single one.

There were just two women in that entire long clip of the inside of Ramattans offices and lobby.

===

I'm starting to see images from that press scrum show up in the Western media now. So far, only the Blue Helmet Blue Body Armor Vest guys. Everybody else has been scrubbed from the back rounds.

Is Ramattan a Pallywood production studio? Is HAMAS in the building?

Obviously the raw feeds we're watching on the Gaza cam are being re-edited to show something quite the opposite of what we've seen take place before our very eyes.

===

If the IDF is monitoring these feeds (they better damn well be), why did they at first deny the usage of WP ammo, that we had already seen?

638 Tigger2005  Thu, Jan 15, 2009 10:59:56pm

A friend gave me some copies of ARCHAEOLOGY magazine. In the November/December 2008 issue, there's a "From the President" letter penned by C. Brian Rose, President of the Archaeological Institute of America, in which he states that "Global warming is real, and it is one of the gravest threats facing our shared cultural heritage." He then goes on to repeat the NOAA claim that "the ten warmest years have all occurred since 1995," and the UN's claim that "the world's glaciers are receding at a record pace."

"Melting of ice and permafrost endanger most frozen sites on the continents, while rising sea levels promote the erosion and submergence of others."

One of the funniest statements he makes is "At risk, in particular, are the ancient remains of people frozen in glaciers and on mountaintops." He goes on to site "Otzi, the late Neolithic herdsman discovered in the Italian Alps; the 550-year-old Native American hunter whose body was recovered from a melting glacier in British Columbia..." The only reason both of these bodies were found and recovered in the first place was that the snow and ice melted and revealed them!

A hundred thousand years hence, I think they'll hack C. Brian Rose's body out of a melting glacier, and find that he died holding a sign saying "Stop global warming."

The more I read about post-election McCain, the more I think the term for him and those like him should not be "RINOs", but Weeble Republicans--who, alas, constantly wobble but never seem to fall down.

I still wish like hell it was him being sworn in in a few days, with Sarah standing by ... we might say, "4 years of Obama will give Sarah an even better shot at the Presidency," but I question if we'll even survive 4 years of Obama, or if he'll leave Sarah anything she can effectively preside over.

Well, it was a glacier melt from whatever the cause. The point I don't get is if not for the melt, they'd never find the body. If not for erosion, many fossils would never been found either.

"When the authorities arrived, they were well aware that the glacier had been melting. Three weeks earlier, the bodies of a man and woman who had gone hiking in 1934 and never returned had been discovered. For this reason, they, like the Simons, assumed that the person had died in a climbing accident. "

I don't know how to answer that one. If for no reason other than the fact that Obama is such a blank slate in terms of his ability to lead. We don't really know how he'll bear up in a crisis yet. I do have small 'h' hope though that he will be adequate. Yes the next 4 years won't be all that fun, but the US has faced worse crises that this one and pulled through. I expect us to survive this one as well.
