Louis Caldera Goes Under the Bus

US News • Views: 3,780

For authorizing the incredibly stupid Air Force One New York flyover, military office director Louis Caldera is out of a job.

A White House aide joined the unemployment lines today for his role in Air Force One’s controversial  photo-op flyover above New York, the Obama administration just announced. (Of course, it’s scheduled for a Friday afternoon.)

In a statement, the White House said President Obama accepted the resignation of military office director Louis Caldera. Caldera, a former Army secretary, took responsibility for the Air Force flyover that sparked 9/11-echo panic in lower Manhattan on April 27.

The political cost can’t yet be calculated. Obama supporters won’t care. But the fact is against advice from the outgoing Bush administration, Obama’s team changed Caldera’s White House job classification from a career military officer to a political appointee. Now, we’ll see which way it goes the second time.

The White House also released its review of the flight near the Statue of Liberty and a photo. Earlier, Defense Secretary Robert Gates apologized for the incident and said it had cost as much as $357,000.

$357,000 Seems a little low to me. It was at least a 757 and an f15, maybe more. Flight crews, ground crews, They probably flew out of DC. I would have guessed a lot more.

$357,000 is the official 0bama-approved number, which means we have to multiply it by a scaling factor of 4-5 to get the true expense.

By and large, they personally forked out for his campaign, they voted for him, and they know he is capable of boosting TV ratings just by making an appearance.

But executives at the Big Four broadcast networks are seething behind the scenes that President Obama has cost them about $30 million in cumulative ad revenue this year with his three primetime news conference pre-emptions.

That might be the broken out cost for the photoshoot after taking into account the value of the training time and other costs that could be accounted for in the mission.

Or it could be the total cost based on standard operation costs for those aircraft. It doesn't seem very low to me for a short flight.

"The idea was to use the April 27 flight for publicity pictures that included the Statue of Liberty and the New York skyline."

Why would they need a publicity photo?

Past Presidents have done so. The idea, in and of itself, is wholly unremarkable, it was just the choice of venue coupled with the total cone of secrecy that illustrates the utter imbecility that is the hallmark of the 44th Presidential administration.

Supposedly, the air crews that service the President get these as autographed souvenirs. That's one story that was going around. I'm not sure why a new shoot was deemed necessary, however.

Every government agency takes photos for publicity, advertising, websites and a thousand other uses. Visit the websites for NASA, any of the national parks, any government agency and you'll see hundreds of examples.

Ansel Adams' first big break was a contract for publicity photos of the National Parks. Many of those photos are among his most famous works, and are still used by the Park Service to this day.

Not certain what the precise use of these photos would be, but it certainly isn't anything out of the ordinary. Not sure, either, how old the last set is, but word is that it's pretty old and may not reflect the current appearance of the plane.

More to the point, as related in the article, The One has Changed Caldera's job (WH military liaison) from a career posting to a political appointment. Which means that in future, that post may not necessarily be filled by a military officer. Or, indeed, anyone who even understands the military.

This no doubt gives The One a warm, fuzzy feeling. But part of the ML's job is to give advice to, among others, the National Security Advisor in crisis situations. So that the NSA (another appointee) can give good advice to the National Command Authority (NCA)- meaning POTUS, or in event of incapacitation, VOTUS.

The previous arrangement dates back to the Truman Administration, and was set up that way so that even if the JCS were unavailable (First Rule of a Crisis- S#!t Happens), there would be somebody on-site with the knowledge and experience to make up the difference.

With this Change, that may no longer hold true.

According to the article, former President Bush "strongly urged" The One not to change the posting's status. (My guess is, "strongly urged" is an understatement.) This apparently caused The One to be even more determined to make the Change.

Apparently, this is because The Self-Exalted One doesn't think he needs advice. On anything.

It is pretty crappy. Most likely it would be significantly cleaned up before use. In fairness, however, the release of even a mildly enhanced photo would send the kooks into a rabid frenzy over...well, I have no idea what that would prove, but it would be something BAD I'm sure. There are software tools available that can automatically detect an image that has had digital manipulations applied, and you just know there's some dweeb crouched down in his mom's basement running everything the government releases through those tools. So releasing an un-retouched photo is probably just a precaution.

Of course, it won't take long for someone to start bleating about the release of only a single photo, when probably hundreds were taken. And it's all those other ones that clearly show the UFO exactly paralleling the Presidential aircraft, with a Gray clearly manipulating a joystick.

Totally agree that this was dumped at the bottom of the news cycle. 0 must be getting suspicious that his lock on the media is wearing a little thin.

He did not recall conversations with his deputy about the operation, perhaps because he had been using pain killers for severe muscle aches."

But Gates also insisted that the appropriate agencies and air traffic controllers were told of the event. New York City officials have said they were asked not to inform the public beforehand.

Is that because the Feds knew New Yorkers would protest such a stunt, thereby putting on hold or eliminating the fly-over altogether?

Can someone please explain to me, why the New York flyover had to be a secret from the local New Yorkers?

Assume it was a good idea to do the flyover to get the photos in the first place.

What's the big deal about letting the New Yorkers know that the aircraft would do a low pass over the city? Tell the local government, they can clue in the police and various first responders. Then the locals would have enjoyed the sight instead of panicking.

Blue Angels flew over my city a while ago. They fly low enough that it's obvious to me who they are. The publicity people take the pictures of the aircraft with the city skyline visible.

I'm assuming they do things like that, from time to time, with Air Force One. Maybe I'm wrong on that. I could imagine given the current economy there would be criticism of the expenditure. Don't the pilots need a certain number of hours in the air for training?

Seems to me all the White House needed to do was common-sense notification. I fell like I'm missing something obvious, putting on my flame-resistant suit.

Caldera to resign Aug. 1 as UNM president
By:

The Associated Press

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - University of New Mexico President Louis Caldera, who has had several disagreements with the school's regents over the past year, announced Wednesday he will take an immediate leave of absence.

David Harris, executive vice president for administration at UNM, was named acting president, effective Wednesday. Caldera will resign Aug. 1 but will advise the regents and administrative officials until then.

He then will take a year off to study and write before returning in the fall of 2007 to teach at the UNM School of Law. His contract gave him an appointment as a law professor with tenure.

"It is now time for me to move on to new endeavors," Caldera said.

Neither Caldera nor the regents - who had called a special meeting Wednesday to discuss the president's contract - detailed what led him to resign.

"You go into these jobs knowing you only have a certain number of years," said Caldera.

The university released a statement saying that by mutual agreement, Caldera would not seek an extension of his contract as president beyond its July 31, 2007, expiration.

The regents said they would look for an interim president with academic experience to lead the state's largest university, which has about 32,000 students. Caldera's limited academic background had been criticized by some faculty members.

Over the past year, Caldera and the regents disagreed on efforts to tighten admission standards and over a program to give bonuses to top administrators - a program the board initially supported.

Caldera, a former U.S. Army secretary who became the university's 18th president in August 2003, said he'd known for several days he would resign.

But Faculty Senate President Christopher Smith said the faculty had been in the dark until the announcement.

"The faculty were surprised. We didn't have anything but rumors to go on," Smith said.

Faculty members want a president who will be fully committed to the university, he said.

"We always hope for a person who isn't just simply building their resume," Smith said.

Caldera had received a $25,000 bonus in 2004, and regents had praised him for a job well done. But the board withheld the bonus last year over his failure to finalize a management team or complete negotiations on a development deal in south Albuquerque.

UNM senior Seth Wilson, 21, criticized Caldera for not meeting with students.

"I've never seen him," Wilson said. "I couldn't pick him out of a lineup."

[...]

Caldera was UNM's second Hispanic president. He succeeded F. Chris Garcia, a political science professor who was interim president after the previous president resigned to join another university.

Before coming to UNM, Caldera had been vice chancellor for university advancement for the California system's 23 campuses, the nation's largest university system.

He was secretary of the Army from 1998 to 2001 under the Clinton administration. He practiced law in the Los Angeles area from 1987 to 1991, was deputy counsel for Los Angeles County in 1991 and 1992 and was in the California Legislature from 1992 to 1997.

The son of Mexican immigrants, Caldera graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1978. He received a law degree from Harvard Law School and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1987.

As president of UNM, he made $322,714, including a $292,714 salary and $30,000 in deferred compensation.

Even after being told, I can tell you that New Yorkers would have objected very strongly, even those who were dumb enough to vote for Hussein...no one who was affected that day would want to even hear that horrifying sound. The whole disgraceful 'show' was also seen and heard in NJ, where is also caused panic.

I still think that Hussein thought it up, and is scapegoating Caldera...in Hussein's eyes? Hussein is perfect, and does not have to take responsibility for anything he does.

His love of self shows so blatantly in his treatment of his innocent little daughters...the 'dog kerfuffle' was something that no caring parent, from a street sweeper to a President, would ever do to their child(ren)...and that Michelle didn't give a damn speaks volumes about those 2 self-absorbed jackasses.

Everything is them, them, them.

If it were someone in your neighborhood? You could ignore them, but when it is the President and First Lady? They are a danger to us all, and they have an agenda, I will bet, that we will all live to regret, and those who voted for him? They will be quivering under the bed...just like Hussein would be, if G-d forbid the 3 AM call ever comes in...

G-d bless America, and G-d save America.

Last week, Mr. Obama ordered a deputy chief of staff, Jim Messina, to
review the incident. And on Friday afternoon, a seven-page review of
the matter was released, along with the photograph.

Mr. Messina, in his memorandum to the president, said that “structural
and organizational ambiguities” in the White House Military Office led
to a series of miscommunications and senior aides to the president
were not advised of the flyover that had been in the planning stages
since March.

“The breakdown was the lack of public notification,” the memorandum
states, adding that Mr. Caldera believed others had been notified
about the flight.

“If he had been aware that the flight would cause so much trouble or
any embarrassment to the president or to the White House,” the report
said, “he never would have allowed it to go forward.”

Allright. So maybe it was kinda stupid from the administration. But the overreaction is also stupid.

Air Force One is just about the most famous plane after Enola Gay. People see this sucker on the news just about every other week, when Obama goes on one of his apology tours.

So this Bimbo jet goes around a lazy tour of Manhattan with a couple of fighters flying wing. And people freak out. If it had been King Kong or Godzilla, they woulda gone out and try to feed them bananas.

Not like it's diving kamikaze style with tracers all around it.

Now I don't like Obama, but to me it's pretty much a non-event. I know, whatddya expect from Liberals in NY, they don't know a Boeing from a Mitsubishi. Actually, they prolly prefer a Mitsubishi.

So anyway, another one under the bus. Prolly takes the heat off the real issue, like handing over Chrysler to the union over the actual investors.

There were indies, Republicans, Democrats, name it..and foreigners in the Twin Towers on 9/11. The bastard cult of islam members who went into them that horrific day did not need party affiliations...they killed their own, too, who were working there. Race, religion, country of origin? It mattered not, nor did it for the planes that were flown into the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and the field in PA.

Anyone who saw the planes actually flying in will never, ever get that image out of their minds. Never. Those who lost parents, children, friends, neighbors...name it, are still traumatized. We were safe at home that day, in a NY suburb, and saw almost all of it on TV, while 2 sons, our only daughter and a daughter in law were either at work or on their way, into Manhattan.

One son was driving to give a lecture in NJ, and our daughter in law was at home, in NJ...we did not find out until a few years after that our son in NJ was driving on the NJ Turnpike, and saw it from his car. he and so many others on the NJT also saw...they pulled over to the side of the road, in shock.

And anyone in their right mind who could even think of having any plane fly that low over NYC? They are both brainless and heartless, and anyone who trivializes what was done with AF One was no big deal can sod off....people are still traumatized by that day still. I hold Hussein 100% responsible.

Get a heart. You need one.

I am getting off this thread now. I am too angry to post.

Exacakitally. As a former AF PIO and aerial photographer, two points -

1. I would have publicized the hell out of the flight as a "Stand Tall America" kind of flight and let all the media know the time a day in advance. I'm assuming AF1 (or SAMxxxx) and escorts have enough ECM to handle any threat. I would have stressed that the Administration was cleverly taking advantage of recurrent training requirements to update photos of the new paint job or whatever. Since I know the MSM are on their knees for the Administration, I know there would not be much blowback. If the true purpose of the mission was footage for the upcoming Tuskegee Airmen Red Tail movie (ALANG F-16 chase), I might have had to do some thinking to tweak the story line.

2. It is hard to avoid canopy reflections on some sun angle shots. You've got to manuever into several positions to get a clear shot. I often found going into a bank or going inverted helped get the best shot. A polarizing filter often helped.

Then who's responsible for this photo-op:

Why the hell was all this even necessary? Photoshop isn't that expensive.

Who is the brainless oaf who came up with the idea of spending $357K (or whatever) for this errant nonsense? This dopey idea resulted in terrifying a substantial portion of the population of NYC & surrounds, wasted a fortune of taxpayers' money, and ended up with such a lousy photo no photographers worth their salt would allow it to be in their portfolio.

Worse, will BO's "investigation" actually determine who's really responsible for all this, and will that person be charged for instigating terrorism? One can only suspect that the Emperor himself came up with this nutcase notion and the collape of the Caldera is designed to obfuscate the source of the lavaflow.

re: #267 dak

With all due respect, were I in NYC and saw a low flying airliner being trailed by F16s, I don't think I would notice the markings on the airliner itself. I would be finding a way to get the hell out of it's flight path.

I also don't think that the people who witnessed 9/11 firsthand paused to think "was that a United or an American airliner?".

Have they found a way to blame Bush?
