Maureen Dowd Plagiarizes Josh Marshall

Blogosphere • Views: 2,890

New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd very obviously plagiarized Josh Marshall, in yet another editorial bashing the Bush administration: NY Times’ Maureen Dowd Plagiarizes TPM’s Josh Marshall.

Increasingly, this is what the New York Times — and Fox News — does: appropriate the work of bloggers and claim it as their own. We’re unpaid and uncredited research assistants.

Maureen Dowd and SNL. Without Bush bashing they have nothing.

The plagiarism is bad enough.

However, it's what the NYT promotes in it's editorials and by it's columnists and they way the distort the news by selective reporting which is the real problem.

She's been spending too much time in Hollywood at the upfronts and not enough time researching.

15 MJ  Sun, May 17, 2009 6:11:27pm

Consider the difference between the NYT and the WaPo. Today the WaPo ran an editorial which took to task the Left-wing of the Democratic Party. It reminded them that there is actually a war going on. Does anyone believe for one moment the NYT would support military tribunals of any sort? Or that America really does have enemies?

Mr. Obama's War?
No. Like it or not, it's America's war.

Sunday, May 17, 2009

PRESIDENT OBAMA'S clashes with the liberal base of his party are the kind of sporting event that Washington loves. But what Mr. Obama is confronting is less his party and more a stubborn reality that many in his party are unwilling to accept: There are forces in the world that continue to wage war against the United States and its allies, whether or not the United States wants to acknowledge that war.

Mr. Obama's recent decisions on paying for Afghanistan, reviving military tribunals and withholding photos of detainee abuse, among others, all reflect this reality. Although we disagreed with his conclusion on the photos, we sympathize with his concern that it might harm Americans fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. His announcement Friday that he had reversed his opposition to trying some enemy detainees in military commissions reflects, again, the fact of a nation at war; the federal courts will not be the proper venue for every al-Qaeda member captured by U.S. forces. (In a separate editorial we offer some views on how to improve the commissions further.) His commitment to fighting al-Qaeda and its allies in Afghanistan and Pakistan recognizes that pretending a threat does not exist will only increase the danger to America....

What's discouraging is how quickly many Americans seem to forget the peril of half-finishing wars. Once before this country abandoned the battlefield in central Asia; Osama bin Laden moved into the vacuum. Today, he and like-minded terrorists continue to conspire in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Somalia, Yemen and elsewhere. Confronted by this unpleasant truth and the difficult challenge it poses, too many politicians lapse into the wishful-thinking school of making policy.

There is no way she would have inadvertently gotten a word for word copy of what was written on TPM. If she claims her friend said it to her, unless she had the friend state it slowly while she copied it down, again, no way you get such a carbon copy of the original work.

There is no honor among thieves. Or journalists.

35 Last Mohican  Sun, May 17, 2009 6:21:34pm

She plagiarized an entire 43-word sentence, exactly, verbatim, word-for-word, with only one small modification: she changed "we" to "the Bush crowd." When she was confronted with what she had done, she responded that she had never read Josh's column, but she got this idea from some friend, who apparently had read the column. She's claiming that her recollection of her friend's recollection of the column just happened to match 42 of the 43 words exactly?

I don't even see how someone can even attempt an obvious lie like this. If I had committed an obvious act of plagiarism like this at any point in my education, I probably would have been expelled. If I did it in my professional career, my professional career would be over immediately. But Maureen Dowd will probably keep her job, and the NYT's readers won't think any less of her or the NYT. Even though some of those readers are the very same people professors who would have expelled me, or killed my career in medicine, if I had done the same thing.

Why?

36 big steve  Sun, May 17, 2009 6:22:00pm

Call me naive but those two quotes are word for word exact. How does one person tell another person some idea and than person 2 writes it for their column and it comes out that exact. The explanation has "Pelosi" written all over it......Maureen needs to come clean, this is totally a cut and paste job.

Here's why it's even more lame: anyone who follows MoDo knows that what she loves more than even gratuitous alliteration is name dropping. If ' a friend' had given her that, she would have gone out of her way to name him or her. She name drops shamelessly, and if you do a search for how many times she says ' a friend of mine told me ' or ' according to a friend', your head would spin.
This is hilarious.

If the primary substance of a news report is based either on quotes or principle themes from a particular source, the source should be credited. If the topic has spread beyond a few recognizable sources, it does not need to be credited.

Sometimes (it has happened to LGF) long exact quotes have been plagiarized by newsmen without any attempt at revealing the source of the story. That is wrong.

Well, the Times does have an easy way to solve this.

Fire MoDo. Hire Josh Marshall.

You get the same content for a fraction of the price, and you might actually get original content from time to time.

Besides, Josh Marshall writes talking points, so it's not like he doesn't know what he's doing (and it's proof positive that MoDo uses his talking points).

Isn't a little bit late for Maureen Dowd to be bashing the Bush Administration? Whatever she would like, it is over and done. Obama isn't crazy enough to actually bring charges against the Bush Administration or its officials on any grounds no matter how much his base and serial fellators in the Media may want him to. It is a lot like the birth certificate nonsense. It ain't going to happen. As the Leftists say Move On!

I think a lot of liberals became intellectually lazy over the past eight years-something doesn't go the way you think it should, blame Bush. They seem unable to get themselves out of these patterns now.

He was at the head of a five-vehicle convoy when it came under attack in the town of al-Amarah on 1 May 2004. He guided the column through a mile of enemy ground to drop off wounded comrades at great risk to his own safety, his citation said.

Weeks later, his vehicle was hit by an rocket-propelled grenade round. Despite receiving horrific head injuries, he drove out of the ambush and again saved his crew.

Depends on the website. Some sites accepting comments treat them as their own materials - as you've submitted them they become the property of the website. Others let you retain ownership of the comments.

It's my practice to hat tip commenters for their contributions - good attribution goes back to my days in school (law school actually), where writing papers became a lesson in how to get as many cites in a sentence as possible... (wish it were sarcasm, but journals and law review comments and articles would have nearly as many citations as they had sentences).

Swedish neo-Nazi makes Berlin new base

German intelligence agents view Patrik Brinkmann as a leading figure among right-wing extremists around the world. He founded the Continent Europe Foundation in 2004 in Sweden.

“The aim of the Continent Europe Foundation leader Patrik Brinkmann is to move to Berlin by 2010 at the latest and create a Europe-wide Internationale of nationalists in cooperation with national organisations from all European people,” the group said in a statement.

His foundation now functions as a hub for extremists from around Europe, with two functionaries from Germany’s neo-Nazi National Democratic Party (NPD) on its advisory board. It also has ties to the extremist German Peoples Union (DVU). Based in the Swedish city of Jönköping, the foundation describes itself as seeking to establish a “greater European civilization” for a “new common identity.”

Because he was ill, Brinkmann’s press spokesperson spoke Thursday on his behalf at a DVU party convention at the Brandenburg state parliament building. The two groups met to introduce their joint proposal: “For a Democratic Brandenburg and a Europe of Fatherlands.”

What could possibly go wrong?

It's my understanding that one of the reasons Canada had so many 104 crashes is that our Air Force took what was designed as a high-speed, high-altitude interceptor, and put it into a more general role, including air support of ground units. The result being, that much of the time, they were flying the aircraft outside of its design envelope.

Increasingly, this is what the New York Times — and Fox News — does: appropriate the work of bloggers and claim it as their own. We’re unpaid and uncredited research assistants.

Their gripe is that they provide all the field reporting for free and all the bloggers have to do is analyze it and add in some research to craft a story.

Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, et al should send royalty checks out to some bloggers...their entire shows are usually about stuff we chat about the night before

Not to diminish the work of bloggers, but most everything in the blogosphere stems from a piece of contemporary news. That should be fair game for all to talk about. People shouldn't be surprised when others of similar political inclinations come to the same conclusions you may have. Rush, for example, does give credit when credit is due. I explicitly remember one show where he read excerpts from one of Iowahawks works and gave him credit/praise several times. Also, they (Limbaugh, Levin, among others) link their sources on their websites as to that days material.

I would say that what I just wrote is true for most of talk radio. The TV pundits... not so much. I haven't seen them cite material like the radio personalities do.

I don't doubt that talking heads lift material from the blogosphere, case in point this story. I guess I'm just saying be careful when painting in broad strokes.

I have to say I'm surprised that NYT would slip up like this.

You get kicked out college for plagiarizing. Dowd will get a fucking medal.

From the NYTPICKER

[Link: www.nytpick.com...]

"josh is right. I didn't read his blog last week, and didn't have any idea he had made that point until you informed me just now.
i was talking to a friend of mine Friday about what I was writing who suggested I make this point, expressing it in a cogent -- and I assumed spontaneous -- way and I wanted to weave the idea into my column.
but, clearly, my friend must have read josh marshall without mentioning that to me.
we're fixing it on the web, to give josh credit, and will include a note, as well as a formal correction tomorrow."

Now, let's think about this. Is stealing from a friend no longer plagiarism? If the sentence had come from a friend, why didn't the friend get credit for saying it in her column in the first place? If the sentence in question was not written by Dowd, does it really matter who wrote it? It's still plagiarism as far as I know.

re: #33 Soona'

Aren't comments public domain?

Maybe. But that's not the point. It would be the point if someone were trying to collect monetary damages from Dowd on the grounds that she had profited by using their words without permission, but that isn't the issue here. Plagiarism is, quite simply, passing off someone else's work as your own. And that is clearly what is taking place here. There is no attribution whatsoever, no hint that these words came from someone and somewhere else. It makes no difference if the words plagiarised were in the public domain; they should still be accredited to their source, or at a minimum it should be noted that they are not the author's own work. It's a matter of honesty. Presenting someone else's work as your own is the moral equivalent of theft.

300 Capitalist Tool  Mon, May 18, 2009 3:36:19am

Far more people are now aware of Dowd's finagled talking point than either the blog or her readership would have produced. Of course the talking point is BS, but since when has that mattered to the left?

The Alinsky- ites are toasting yet another success.

The Bush crowd is still causing problems.

Great!

I didn't read all the comments so if I plagiarized someones sentence I will re write it.

The Bush crowd still causing problems?

Great!

"Plagiarize,
Let no one else's work evade your eyes,
Remember why the good Lord made your eyes,
So don't shade your eyes,
But plagiarize, plagiarize, plagiarize -
Only be sure always to call it please 'research'."

From Tom Lehrer's Lobachevsky song.

The Blogosphere has now reached critical mass such that the MSM is leeching off it, when will we see the first case of plagiarism going to court? This might get them off of their fat lazy arses and do some fact-checking.

Dubya's nickname for her was The Cobra.
Pretty dead on.
It's hard to imagine that her little sister is a rock ribbed Republican, and her brother as well.

If their sis was their introduction to the left / liberal mindset, I'm not surprised one bit.
LITTLE SIS: "Maureen! Quit stealing my toys. MOOOMMM!"
MAUREEN: "You're so selfish."

re: #285 Buck

It's funny... the only thing worse than getting caught copying off of someone else's paper, is copying the WRONG answer off of someone else's paper....

In several disciplines there's only one right answer and an infinite way to get the wrong answer... it may not be worse to copy the wrong answer but it will definitely increase your chance of getting caught.

re: #250 pingjockey

Are the donks gonna aske for her head? IMO saying the CIA intentionally lied to congress is way worse than wishing an old rascist happy birthday.

Lott did more than that by his words ("if he'd won, we wouldn't be having all these problems"). He was hinting for a return to the days when the South thumbed its nose at the Reconstruction Amendments and federal law in general, and was hoping to make its informal caste system a legal fact again. It's not the sort of thing that's okay to say if one doesn't mean it; if one does mean it, one shouldn't be in Congress. (Yes, I know, the same applies to Maxine Waters etc too.)

Pelosi's case is different but I concede that what she's been doing is equally bad. She's causing a serious mess for the executive branch that is weakening our foreign policy.

Worst case scenario under Lott and Thurmond is that black people end up as serfs again. Worst case scenario under Pelosi is that the CIA melts down, jihadis take over nuclear states, black people (alongside everyone else) end up as stains on the ruined walls of our major cities, and our whole economy reverts to the year 1834. Given a choice, I pick "neither" and wish Lott and Pelosi a swift and involuntary retirement.

307 S'latch  Mon, May 18, 2009 8:54:48am

Is it really any surprise that Maureen Dowd has run out of original material for bashing the Bush administration. That is pretty much her entire shtick, isn't it?

308 Spartacus50  Mon, May 18, 2009 9:29:46am

No we get to see how the NYT treats its white plagiarists. I wonder if they will hold her to the Jayson Blair Standard?

309 arf  Mon, May 18, 2009 10:18:11am

"unpaid and uncredited research assistants".

Interesting point. With the decline of the print media, I hear their complain that the news aggregators use the print media's research and news reporting, and they feel taken advantage of. I see their point.

I now realize it works both ways, doesn't it?

310 paint-right  Mon, May 18, 2009 10:25:54am

I am late to the discusson and posting from work , but I had a thought...did anyone suggest that maybe Ms Dowd is having her columns ghost written? by a young "journalism school" grad. possibly?

311 LieSeeker  Mon, May 18, 2009 7:50:37pm

Over at Fark.com, someone pointed out that she reported on Joe Biden's plagiarism of Kinnock. (fifth comment)
