New Poll: Only 32% of Virginia Republicans Think Obama’s a US Citizen

Weird • Views: 2,563

Uh oh. A new poll from a reputable firm with more evidence that Nirtherism is not just a fringe phenomenon in the GOP: Just 32% of Virginia Republicans Think Obama is a Citizen.

Here’s an advance look at a new Public Policy Polling survey in Virginia completed over the weekend:  An astonishing 41% of the state’s Republicans think President Obama was not born in the United States while just 32% think he was and 27% are still not sure.

This is indeed bad, on several levels. While there are actual legitimate things to cause concern with this administration, we are focused of one of the most idiotic conspiracy theories. This one is even dumber than the apollo moon theory and the JFK nonsense. Personally, I think it ties the 911 lunacy, but I realize that opinions may vary. With Obama’s outright lying to the American people everytime he speaks, his turning the Presidency into kabuki theater, and the disaster his agenda will bring if passed, you would think that the GOP would have enough to talk about without stooping to this level.

He is from the planet Arugula. He has come to our earth to raise free-range, organically fed humans for consumption. People on Arugula want us antibiotic and pollutant free. Our planet needs to be cool because it makes us plump and juicy, like a fine grape. Jews are too chewy.//

It does boggle the mind. Perhaps the vision is Obama standing at the top of the stairs of Air Force One waving good-bye Nixon style. Maybe with his wrists handcuffed. The camera pans to triumphant Nirthers on the tarmac, doing a victory dance.

25 Diamond Bullet  Mon, Aug 3, 2009 12:48:40pm

Acknowledging that Obama was born in the United States is to acknowledge he was born of man in the first place, rather than mystically created when his father Zeus transformed into a golden swan and seduced a flower maiden. I for one would like to thank Virginia Republicans (of which I am one) for doing their best to uphold the divine origin of the One. Without that unfettered reverence, we might find ourselves on the slippery slope of questioning his policies or wondering why an immortal has suddenly greying hair.

I consider the possible agenda. As we all know, polls can be made to look at the pollster wishes. This particular author of this blog, Taegan Goddard, has as contributions in 2008, three: “ACTBLUE’, “KOPPLIN (D), FOR CONGRESS” and JOHN EDWARDS FOR PRESIDENT”.

I can’t be the only one seeing this emerging push to paint conservatives as loonies. Of course there are those who are, but I am not seeing in my own life a reality that in any way corresponds to this hysterical-sounding meme being pushed by liberals.

A modified version of a recent post:

Where are we on nirthing?
Harvested from the threads:
Nirthing is right wing, particularly Southern right wing, just as truthering is left wing.
Nirthing will not die down:
because it is the psycho-pathology of sore losers who escalate their fantasies when proved wrong;
because it is fueled by the right wing talk radio and blogs (Charles);
because it is fueled by the left wing MSM and blogs (Cantor);
because Obama refuses to produce original certificate (A. Sullivan and many others);
because it is collective delusion like the Japanese penis-disappearing delusion.
Nirthers’ fraudulent Kenyan birth certificate is the work of Marxist agent provocateurs, so nirthers are victims of political dirty tricks.
Nirthers have done the world a favor because otherwise journalists would not have investigated Obama’s personal life.
Nirther voters are inhibiting GOP from denouncing nirthing, even though they might gain anti-nirther voters (among whom may be truthers).

“Nirthing” - bringing into the world a monster child demanding attention.

This is really getting old. I don’t blame people for wondering if he was born here, as the information is enough to confuse most everybody not paying close attention.

Look at the poll — they did not ask if he was a natural born American citizen, and therefore eligible to be President — they just asked if he was born in the U.S. Not everyone knows how old Obama is and what year Hawaii became a state. With all the confusion out there, people could actually think he was born in transit to Hawaii or in Kenya.

Why should all Lizards expect that the typical voter is paying as much attention to this issue as is this web site? Besides, the dislike of Obama among Republicans and Conservatives is getting so high that those who are lucky enough to be polled would probably prefer to say the most negative thing possible. I could not blame them.

This is not an issue anymore and it really does not matter what Joe average Republican thinks of Obama’s birth place. It DOES matter what Joe average Republican thinks of Obama’s health care plan, his energy policies or his tax policies, and we know these are held in very low esteem, hence the most negative response possible.

Yeah, I also totally miss out on this stuff, and I can also live without it. Although year before this last I had a class of ninth-graders who were conspiracy theorists to a kid, and it was lots of fun. Top of their list:

1. 9/11 was somehow a set-up. Exactly how, or by who, or to what end, they could not exactly explain. But it was a set-up.

2. George Bush is plotting to unite Mexico, the U.S. and Canada into one nation, change our currency to the amero, and rule over us forever.

3. The CIA killed Princess Diana. (This one led to insane hours of fun. “OK, yes, I do believe the CIA has probably killed people in the past. Explain to me, slowly, why the CIA would want to kill the ex-wife of the hereditary figurehead leader of a close ally, who had no apparent interest in politics.” “So she wouldn’t tell!” “Tell what? Tell whom?” “Oh, you just believe whatever the government says, don’t you, Mrs. SFZ?”)

It jives completely with the explosion of nirthery we’ve all seen on the web and in the media, right across the right wing blogging world, radio pundits and on cable tv. It strikes me as somewhat surreal in this context that anyone could at this point try to paint it’s mainstreaming among the right as a fiction of the left.

Applying the same sort of math used in reporting the Kos poll, 61% of Democrats believe Bush was behind the 9/11 attacks. (This differs from the numbers being touted yesterday; this may be a different poll than was mentioned in an earlier thread). In any case, it’s a widespread phenomenon. Lord knows how many Democrats believe that Bush’s TANG records are somehow suspect, even today.

As I noted in the previous thread: by definition, half of the population is below average. Take what comfort may be available from knowing you’re in the other half.

84 Last Mohican  Mon, Aug 3, 2009 1:05:00pm

Not to discount the severity of the nirther delusion, but something smells fishy to me about this poll.

First of all, is it being reported anywhere other than “Taegan Gollard’s Political Wire”? I took at look at the website of Public Policy Polling, the organization that supposedly did the poll, and there’s no mention of it at all.

And why aren’t the complete results being released until tomorrow? Is it common to release one finding as a “tease,” then release the rest the next day? If so, wouldn’t it make more sense for PPP to issue the “tease” itself?

Also, even if Taegan Goddard’s article is correct, the headline is not consistent with the article. The headline says “32% think Obama is a citizen,” whereas the text says “32% think Obama was born in the United States.”

Sure, it’s beyond nuts. But if the nuttiness is this widespread, it has also crossed the lines to Democrats and Independents to some extent.

I thought that this would really marginalize the Republicans and that Obama would gain from this, and while that’s probably still true to some extent, I’m starting to wonder if this isn’t going to actually end up working against Obama now. Is he actually going to have to eventually provide live footage of his birth now with Diamondhead in the background to shut these lunatics up for good?

I think it is reasonable to conclude that the melt down is over.

That being said, I really don;lt see a whole lot of good news out there to base hopes in a continuing bull market at the moment. GDP is still shrinking and you will get unemployment approaching 9.8% at the end of the week. Without decreasing unemployment (not just a slowing of job destruction) and real GDP growth is needed for the market to expand on any meaningful level.

So there was a lot of cash sitting on the sidelines and some of it decided to get back into the market carefully. But they will scram in an instant.

I would not be surprised to see a pull back of 5% at least in the near future.

Oil climbed to $71.28 and 10 year treasuries rose to 3.63%.

So only 32% of Virginia Republicans think Obama is a citizen? That’s good there folks, you keep your eye on that for us m’kay? Meanwhile, the rest of us - the sane folks - will keep an eye on other stuff. Say,

Biggest revenue drop since 1932

The numbers could hardly be more stark: Tax receipts are on pace to drop 18 percent this year, the biggest single-year decline since the Great Depression, while the federal deficit balloons to a record $1.8 trillion.

Social Security - screwed. Medicare - screwed. Medicaid - screwed. Nation’s infrastructure - screwed. And the administration wants even more: universal health care (actually nationwide health insurance, but who am I to quibble) and Cap and Trade.

And raising taxes, well according to Geithner, that’s on the table.

These fools are going to bankrupt us completely, and 68% of Virginians care more about a nirth certificate? It’s total insanity.

What kind of food do you like, and where in the city will you be? And what price range? Without knowing either I suggest the Far East Cafe in Chinatown for both the food and the elegant setting (private booths and giant elaborate light fixtures brought over from China many years ago.

Just give me the names of favorite places for the locals. I eat almost anything and am on vacation so I do not really care about cost. I want to eat where the locals eat.

The market was up over 1% again today, getting back to levels last seen last November.

Fair enough, I know you were skeptical of the quick move to DOW 9000, how do you feel about 10,000. BTW I took a chance on Ford near it’s lows at $3.00, do I cash out, or hang in there for the longer term. (2000 shares), and it is money I can risk.

re: #183 Walter L. Newton

Real numbers: Ford’s year-over-year sales for July were up 1.6%. Last July was down 15% over the previous July. So things are still dismal, even at Ford.

Things are still horrid at GM and Chrysler, whose July figures are negative - but not as negative as last year’s numbers, which the Administration is pitching as “good.” Which means “bad,” I guess, considering that Chrysler had to double it’s incentives to $9000 - over half the price knocked off it’s qualifying vehicles - just to manage a loss that wasn’t as bad as expected. Apparently, they can only sell cars if they basically give them away, and then pay the new owner some more.

Interesting, too, that the only real success story - Ford - is also the only US car company that rejected government assistance and decided that maybe good management was a better solution.

re: #211 SixDegrees

That’s what I suspected, I couldn’t find numbers, good, you did. And, even if Ford did benefits some from Clash for Clunkers, I would still have to see how well Ford was doing during a normal month when the economy was good.

When the economy is tanking, a good month could always be a month that a CFO would consider tragic at any other time.

So, saying Ford had the best month in a year, or whatever, is not saying anything. Better than what?

I think that what people have to take from the Nirth & Troof (sounds like a specialty store, doesn’t it?) phenomenon is that the very concept of objective, verifiable truth has taken a serious beating over the past decade or two, in all segments of society.

Mere physical evidence—mere objective, verifiable fact—is counted as less than “feelings”; the desire for what one wishes to be true overrides the mundane reality of what actually is true.

This phenomenon was always present, but it has burgeoned out of control. Once might argue that it has been helped along by the endless hall of mirrors that is the Internet; but it has also been fertilized by decades of education that relies upon feelings and self-esteem rather than facts and rules.

No, I am not always posting, but am nearly always here.

sattv4u2 - Yeah, could use a nice bourbon about now.

Seems pretty obvious that if, as Ziggy says, PPP are Dems, that there is much to know before calling people idiots. No need to be born in the U.S. to be a citizen. We only know that PPP found nearly 70% of those they polled (whoever the hell they were) who thought he was born in another country, at sea or in a place which was not part of the U.S. at the time of his birth. Pollsters read comments before asking questions. We do not know what was said before whatever question was asked.

I am the first to doubt the value of universal suffrage, but I am also the first to understand that most people have jobs, kids, hobbies and interests which do NOT include the details of the birthplace of “THE ONE”. I have some education in statistics, so I apologize for reserving judgment before knowing the facts.

One other thing to consider about the market.

As interest rates climb (and they are), that means you will be able to get a very good rate of return in fixed income instruments as opposed to taking a risk in the stock market. That will start becoming more and more attractive to aging baby boomers in or nearing retirement. That will tend to serve as a drain of capital out of the stock market as rates climb.

Despite the rumors of Elvis sightings over the past 25 years, just 7% of the public believes Elvis is still alive - while 9% of his fans believe in a living Elvis. Throughout the 1990s similar numbers of Americans have thought it possible Elvis Presley was still alive. In 1997, 5% thought it was possible, and in 1992, 8% did.

Interestingly, those under age 30, the group least likely to be Elvis fans, are more likely than any other age group to believe that Elvis Presley may not really be dead. 11% of these young Americans say it is possible that “The King” lives on.

She believes Obama is NOT an American, and also spoke of the Illuminati and the Builderberg conspiracy.

I’m confounded and upset.

My husband went to a tea party a while back and was given a DVD about the Builderberg conspiracy. It was hysterical…unintentionally of course, and we laughed our way through it. Kinda like watching Borat, only afterwards you realize it isn’t a parody and the joke is ruined.

Nor really; I don’t follow it much. But interest rates are extremely low, making treasuries a less than stellar investment except for their quality. And frankly, a weak dollar is a good thing in a recession - it makes domestic goods more attractive relative to imported products, and makes our exports more attractive overseas. But given that interest rates can’t go any lower, I’d expect it to drift around it’s present level until a recovery is well underway and rates need to be raised.

But frankly, this isn’t an area that I pay much attention to. 3 Wood probably has a more coherent answer.

Hi 3w, I’m curious — what do you think about gold as an investment during a period of inflation?

I’d hold some but only as part of a diversified portfolio. Gold has a lot of costs associated with it that the commercials don;t talk about. Gold prices tend to be very volatile, don;t watch it on a day to day basis or you will go nuts.

Everytime gold gets cheap I pick up a few gold coins and put them away.

I don’t follow it much. But interest rates are extremely low, making treasuries a less than stellar investment except for their quality.

The treasury is pulling the short term part of the yield curve artificially low right now. They can’t keep that up forever. Once they let the curve go, watch it jump. You don’t want to be holding treasuries when that happens.

And frankly, a weak dollar is a good thing in a recession - it makes domestic goods more attractive relative to imported products, and makes our exports more attractive overseas.

A problem with that latter point; sure, a weak dollar helps our producers export more in volume… but they’re getting “paid less” for what they export, so to speak. In effect, the rest of the world gets to take the fruits of our labor, and pay for it with Monopoly money (I exaggerate a little for effect, of course). And to the extent domestic producers need to buy imported raw materials or components with weak dollars, they suffer in comparison to foreign competitors.

350 SixDegrees  Mon, Aug 3, 2009 2:06:01pm

More actual numbers, year-over-year July auto sales:

Ford: +2%
Toyota: -11%
Chrysler: -9%
GM: -19%

Ford - the only US company to stay the hell away from government “help” - is the only domestic winner here. Chrysler managed to do better than GM - at the cost of forking over $4500 per car of it’s own money in addition to the government’s $4500, slashing prices of it’s vehicles by more than half yet still managing to lose 9%.

GM…well, GM sucked, big time, especially considering that these figures are comparing with last year’s July period, which was utterly dismal.

WOO HOO! The Recovery is working!

A year ago today I took early retirement from my previous career , with no immediate prospects nor real clear idea of what I was going to do next.

I was fortunately blessed with several good job opportunities even as the economy was melting down, and now have a whole new career that I am very happy with, plus am starting my own business on the side as well.

The point is this, regardless of who is in the White House and how crazy the Speaker of the House might be, this is still the United States, the land of opportunity and the home of the brave. For those of you who are unemployed or underemployed, keep going and pitching. There is something out there for you. No one can take away your talent, your drive, and your creativity.

See Above comment, and break out the tinfoil.

You know one of the things that really bug me is not taking responsibility for actions. This is not a liberal double twist conspiracy, it’s not Soros’s evil unseen hand working behind the scenes, it’s kooks.
Conservative kooks that don’t want Obama as president and are too chicken shit to say out right that they want a change at the top.
A coup.
They consider him a usurper, and they (for which I’ll give them that, as it’s borderline sedition) can’t (yet) bring themselves to say it.
It’s getting there however, and look at Free Republic that wondered (a “thought experiment” at FR is a delicious irony) how many it would take to storm the White House and Congress.
Charles pointed it out on this blog last week.
So, are the Democrats exploiting the situation?
Hell yes. As the Republicans would and will given a chance as, for better or worse, that’s politics.
But it’s not a liberal invention.

I was hearing just that touted as a sign of “recovery” on NPR this morning. Hooray! Chrysler managed to sell more cars, by… um… eliminating their margin!

Worse than that - they eliminated their margin, and then tossed more money into a burning trash barrel, to boot. They are losing huge amounts of money on every car they sell right now, in a desperate attempt to hang on to even a tiny amount of market share. And even after throwing all that money in the face of consumers, their sales are still down 9%, compared to the shitty July of 2008.

Shades of what we did in the homebuilding biz. Sure, the market was tanking but we were still selling…at a loss, with tons of $$ giveaways.

I’d also like to know if all these rush to Cash for Clunkers folks are really “qualified,” or are the sales being rammed through to make a false market scene (again woefully reminiscent of the mortgage fiasco).

375 haakondahl  Mon, Aug 3, 2009 2:12:41pm

I can understand the vast majority of Americans, but I cannot understand why thinking people would buy a GM or Chrysler product these days, rather than a Ford. Maybe that’s easy for me to say, as I have always been a Ford man, but I loved my 1967 LeMans, and my Step-Dad’s 1967 Fury III and pumpkin orange Dodge pickup—I’ve never been a “hater” for domestic cars.

But we now have one company which has conducted itself as grown-ups, and two which are behaving like children; one of them for the second time!

I’m going to hit the wife up with a plan to buy a new car, and it WILL be a Ford.

382 caution  Mon, Aug 3, 2009 2:14:10pm

I rarely comment here, but I’m just amazed at what’s been happening.

Not too long ago, folks were talking about XX% of democrats who thought 9-11 was an inside job of some sort. Now weren’t talking about XX% of republicans think the POTUS wasn’t eligible for the office.

This is proof that the constant splintering and division carried out in the name of political gain has made a real mess of things.

Consensus isn’t sexy, but sometime we need it. With numbers spreading to the fringe on so many issues (and non issues), it seems we’re on a road to nowhere.

This occurred to me, as well. CFC is perpetuating exactly the same rabid, borrow-and-spend mentality that led to the real estate bubble and the collapse of the credit markets in the first place. It’s unsustainable, and lies near the root of our current problems.

So, it’s Monday, and I decided to take a break from working my ass off, check on the news, and I see this is not exactly the kind of news I was hoping to find.

With all the other outright bullshit Obama is trying to pass, and the spineless path he’s apparently chosen to deal with the big bad hostile world out there, I see the Virginian Republicans are still clinging to their fucked up perception of Obama’s citizenship.

Virginia Republicans: 68% still putting all their eggs in the Stupid Basket.

I’d be willing to bet the majority of that 68% are also creationists, because it’s obvious they refuse to evolve or employ the brains they believe God gave them.

Solutions, people. It’s about solutions. Ranting Obama is not a citizen is not a solution. Besides, it’s a fact he is a citizen, so get the fuck over it, already. Put all the stupid away, put on your thinking caps, and beat Obama’s plans with better plans. Stop with the idiocy. Stop spinning your wheels. Stop wasting time with bullshit that doesn’t matter.

Now, I’m going back to my shitty job… Maybe, when I return, I’ll see this was all a hoax, and the majority of Virginia Republicans aren’t as stupid as they insist on demonstrating.

Good for you.
I really see that argument as the next step in the nirther train wreck, and it alone is perhaps the MOST damaging of all, as it paints all Republicans and Conservatives as bullies that when confronted reality, cry that it was all a set up.
So then Democrats and moderates will just look and roll their eyes. and who can blame them.
It’s about taking Responsibility.
It’s about owning up to reality and what the real underlying issues are that drive this conspiracy.
It make me crazy to see post after post (not necessarily here that much) decrying that it’s the libs doing this, or the MSM not letting the narrative out, or Soros or bla bla bla… everything but a good hard look at what our Representatives are doing and what we let them get away with for decades, (R) or (D).

Didn’t Obama claim in 2008, on foreign soil no less, that he was a “citizen of the world?” Doesn’t that act as a renunciation of this U.S. citizenship? He can’t have dual citizenship. No car payments, the air conditioning just quit working, but that’s my damned car. Be damned if I’m going to get sucked into a (yet another) program where they just pledged another 2 billion dollars so I can enjoy a few years of car payments, particularly in such a shitty economy.

Mr. Heat, on the other hand, is frothing at the mouth, convincing himself he needs a new car. Without this gd program, he’d still be happy to drive what he already has (and already paid off).

Hell, I know Hawaii is a state, and I live there. But I still use the term back to the States. Why? Because it, in many ways, resembles a Third World country. Arab states warned off Israel deal

Palestinian leaders warned Arab states on Monday that any effort to normalise ties with Israel at the urging of President Barack Obama would deal a damaging blow to the quest for statehood.

The dispute over Israel’s role in the Middle East emerged as Fatah, the dominant faction in Palestinian politics, prepared to stage its first congress since a meeting in exile in 1989.

Exiles assembling for the meeting in the West Bank town of Bethlehem have demanded a robust stance against Israel, while activists within the Palestinian territories have sought to use the meeting as a launch pad for a more moderate approach to peace talks. Recovery of land and possessions lost in the 1948 war – known as the Nakba or catastrophe – ranks as an obsession for the exiles but is given a lower priority by their local counterparts.

“Normalisation of Israel’s ties with Arab countries before the occupation ends in the Palestinian areas is the last thing that the Palestinians should have to experience,” said Abu El-Izz Dajani, a former PLO ambassador who is running for a post in the Fatah leadership. “It is as dangerous as the Nakba, as dangerous as the 1967 seizure of the West Bank and Jerusalem.”

Blackadder contained some of the best comedy lines I’ve ever heard. If any Lizards haven’t seen it, you can find a few clips on Youtube. There were four series of which the best, in my opinion, were series 2 and 4 (the Elizabethan series and the first world war series), although series 1 and 3 were not without funny moments. There were also a few one-off episodes such as Blackadder’s Christmas Carol and The Cavalier Years.

Practically every supposed acronym used to account for a slang term is wrong. Acronyms were not really common until the mid-20th century, and terms like “posh,” “cop,” and, yes, “pom” or “pommy” long predate their use.

I had thought of that, but I’d like to have neutral phrasing to fall back on. If some people are enticed down a more reasonable line of thought just by seeing a poll question about the correlation between the two, then good for them. I’d like for them to know that they arrived at that conclusion independently.

Odd, everytime I play the video, it sets off chain barking and we don’t even have any dogs around here.

LOL!

Blackadder: I’ve no desire to hang around with a bunch of upper-class delinquents, do twenty minutes’ work and then spend the rest of the day loafing about in Paris drinking gallons of champagne and having dozens of moist, pink, highly experienced French peasant girls galloping up and down my - hang on…

Okay, who’s got video editing skills? What I want is a repeating loop of Orly Taitz saying “Let me, let me answer! Let me, let me, let me answer!” at 4:36 in this video. I want to listen to it until I can figure out which muppet she sounds exactly like. It’s bugging me that I can’t figure it out.

It might be Pepe, the King Prawn.

Hey look, this is a blog, with all kinds of people and levels of understanding. You just put down a whole bunch of Lizards by your comment above.

If you have something to say about someone, then make a comment about and to that person, but stop making all inclusive remarks about the intellect of the users of this blog.

Got it?

Oh, lighten up. He was talking about me.

It is surpassingly sad for me to note that the names of the contestant factions currently fighting it out for leadership of the GOP are the Idiotic, the Ignorant, and the Insane.

Whichever of them wins, the party - and the nation - loses.

re: #612 BlueRoses
That’s easy enough. Obama is and was the blank slate people could paste their personal hopes on and vote for him.
However we all are now finding out who he really is and I still don’t like him.

And that’s the point. There’s a lot of folks who simply do not trust how this man got into the White House. They have no personal knowledge of the situation, but they know there’s volumes of unanswered questions about his past, and they assume (quite reasonably) that on any matter having to do with Obama, whatever the press is saying is 180 degrees opposed from fact.

So the nirther story, nonsensical as it may be, is a convenient hook on which to hang their disbelief that the voters of this country would elect a man whose background often seems to have been spun from whole cloth.

Hell, then he could appoint Lieberman VP and we’d have more Joe than we know what to do with.

What’s wrong with people just wanting to be 100% sure?

664 S'latch  Tue, Aug 4, 2009 6:56:50am

I don’t believe this poll for one minute. 32% of Virginia Republicans do not seriously doubt Barack Obama is a citizen.

I have no doubt Obama is a citizen, but if asked by some polling outfit, I might even tell them that I doubt Obama is a citizen just to express my general disapproval of his administration. I have no doubt a great number of the respondents of this poll are responding similarly.

Doubting Obama’s citizenship, or nodding at people who seriously do doubt it, is just a figurative way of saying “hell no” to Obama. This is just a flawed, but human, way of expressing disapproval and rejection of something that you oppose.

Does anyone else recall the Bush knew about 9/11 before it happened polls? Link above…

You know I just think many who answered these polls (then and now) just took a shot at a guy they hate. It’s the “lie I like” phenomenon. I grabbed the links more or less at random, its the polls not the accompanying editorial I’m pointing out.

Funny-about half of southern Republicans and half of all Democrats gave the hostile/paranoid answer.

Comments?
