Just got my email from David Axelrod. Would've had been cooler if the subject line was: "There are things being negotiated now that are gonna solve all your problems."
Dear Friend,
Tonight at 8 p.m. ET, the President will address Congress and detail his plan to bring stability and security to Americans who have insurance and affordable coverage to those who don’t. You can watch the speech on television or on WhiteHouse.gov, with an exclusive live chat immediately afterwards.
But you don’t need to wait until then to understand what’s at stake. The President has said many times that reform isn’t about him — it’s about a health insurance system that is breaking America's families and small businesses. Millions of Americans have lost coverage, are denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions, and continually watch premiums skyrocket out of control. That’s why Americans want reform and why Congress must act.
Two brave parents who represent these struggles — Laura Klitzka from Wisconsin and Nathan Wilkes from Colorado — will join the First Lady at the Capitol to watch tonight’s speech. Their powerful stories underscore what’s at stake with health insurance reform:
Health Care Stories
Stories like Laura’s and Nathan’s remind us that there isn’t time to wait, and that the status quo is not an option. Tonight, the President will clearly explain what health reform means to Americans — both those who have insurance now and those who don’t. He will also specify what health reform doesn’t mean — clearing up the confusion that has been fomented by the special interests and defenders of the status quo.
Tune into to the speech tonight at 8 p.m. ET. It’s an historic moment you won’t want to miss.
Thank you,
DavidDavid Axelrod
Senior Adviser to the PresidentP.S. Don’t forget: as soon as the President finishes his speech, White House Communications Director Anita Dunn will respond directly to reactions and questions in an exclusive live chat. So even if you watch the speech on TV, grab a computer and join the discussion: on Facebook or [Link: www.WhiteHouse.gov...]

hummaahnaahummaahnaahummaahnaa...
I'm getting a vision of Obama's upcoming speech... The President is reading his lines from his trusty teleprompter. His speaking voice is comforting, uplifting... He is saying familiar things... We can't afford to wait... He must create a new government program to compete with the insurance companies... Some people went broke because they couldn't get insurance... Some people got sick and died because they couldn't get insurance... There are things on a table... He is smiling and making witty, yet subtle insults about people want a different solution. He is saying... nothing... nothing new.
Bwawawawa! Woah! That was intense.
I wonder if my vision will come true.

[Link: uk.biz.yahoo.com...]
Apparently she is Swiss. Here's more info:
swissinfo: You are one of the only women diplomats in Iran. Do you have difficulties in a society ruled by men? How do you deal with the obligation to wear the headscarf?L.L.A.: I am actually the only woman ambassador in Iran, the former female representative from Sierra Leone having finished her assignment before my arrival.
So far, this position has certainly not been to my disadvantage. My treatment by the authorities has been respectful, professional and expeditious – I was able to present my credentials to the president within one month, which is almost a record.
As far as wearing the headscarf in public places is concerned, this is a legal obligation for any woman independent of her nationality, religion or rank.
I do understand why this obligation is being questioned but as a diplomat I am required to respect the laws of my country of residence.
I'd say "not dhimmitude" since she is following the law.

There's still a lot of speculation about if the public option is going to make it. It seems they've worked out some sort of comprimise to pass something. We might get some hints tonight but I think they're going to unveil the bill next week.

There's still a lot of speculation about if the public option is going to make it. It seems they've worked out some sort of comprimise to pass something. We might get some hints tonight but I think they're going to unveil the bill next week.
What's it going to more closely resemble? House Bill? Baucus? Something different?

Baucus Cuts Bait: Moving Forward With Or Without GOP
Max Baucus is getting serious. Just a few hours before President Obama is scheduled to address a joint session of Congress, the Finance Committee chairman announced that the committee would be moving forward with a health care reform bill - with or without the GOP.
The announcement followed a morning meeting with the so-called Gang of Six.
A source with knowledge of the situation said that Baucus told the two other Democrats and three Republicans that he will be putting out a "Chairman's Mark" by the middle of next week whether he has Republican support or not. (A Chairman's Mark is a bill written by the chairman of the committee.)

As I stated above, I think that's the intention but there were so many better ways to say it. I'm not criticizing the intent - it's appropriate to what he wants to do - it's just a bit mangled.
Perhaps, I'll wait for the context and delivery to be sure. I think he tried to not repeat the Clinton mistake of writing a plan and let congress do it. As it turned out, it was called Obamacare just like Hillarycare anyway. It's time for him to try some herding of cats. If he fails, it will be a major setback, and he needs to put it all on the line.

Well the Democrats put a great deal of effort into recruiting moderate/conservative candidates in the last 2 cycles.
Those very candidates are the ones who are now most vulnerable.
Will they sacrifice themselves to preserve Obama's prestige? To save the liberals? I doubt they will.

Ah crap, Windows not handle Cyrillic good like Macintoshki.
It's not a Windows thing -- the LGF hamsters choke on strings of non-Latin characters more than 5 letters long. The way around it is to insert some EMPTY bold or ital tags into the middle of the Cyrillic Russian words, as I've done in the text below:
Я люблю помазать на хлеб оливковое-чесночном пюре, называется по-испански "тапанаде".
This usually works like a charm -- the empty tags break up the Cyrillic into smaller chunks that don't upset the hamsters, but the effect is invisible to the reader.
(And the sentence above means "I like to spread on bread an olive-garlic puree that's called tapanade in Spanish" -- just something I posted recently on a Facebook group for non-native speakers of Russian.)

Palin Sides With Obama on Afghanistan

On at least one of his major policies, President Obama is getting support, and a nudge, from an unlikely quarter – Sarah Palin.
Ms. Palin, the former governor of Alaska and last year’s Republican vice presidential nominee, joined a group of conservatives signing a letter to Mr. Obama praising him for his management of Afghanistan and urging him to commit more troops there.

A comment by "June" from the article about Robert Spencer at Bartholomew’s Notes:
Charles Johnson is a stinky old hippy; just as shallow and as superficial as they come. For years he posted derogatory and defamatory screeds denouncing all Muslims without ever bothering to make a disctinction between the radicals and the moderates, and now we embrace him!
Hey! I may be an old hippie, but "stinky?" Actually I smell pretty good usually, except after a long bike ride. Mr. Beaumont, on the other hand...
And by the way, this accusation that I EVER denounced "ALL" Muslims is nothing but a rotten lie. I dare anyone to find a single article I have ever written that does that.
Another commenter says:
The person who comes here as “June” is JW’s “Hugh”.
Which would not surprise me one bit. That's the kind of thing Spencer's crowd does.

Well the Democrats put a great deal of effort into recruiting moderate/conservative candidates in the last 2 cycles.
Those very candidates are the ones who are now most vulnerable.
Will they sacrifice themselves to preserve Obama's prestige? To save the liberals? I doubt they will.
They will be more vulnerable if the Dems do noy accomplish what they were elected to do. Nancy Pelosi and Barney Frank will be re-elected no matter what, but people in purple districts need to be able to say that they have done somethong that will benefit people.

"June's" next comment offers more evidence of idiocy:
The fear of Islam in Britian is palpable and there you are, all Lilly Thompson, baying; “one ringy-dingy, two ringy-dingy”…as though such details it were of any importance.
That should be "Lily Tomlin," of course. But details are not important...

She has what I look for in punditry, an original position taken with absolute sincerity. Andrew Sullivan used to have it, but doesn't any more. Charles still has it. Camille has it. VDH has it and Krauthammer has it.

Likely, Obama will attempt to "split the difference" to appear statesmanlike and, in the end, he'll likely end up a disappointment. His speech will attempt to utilize his considerable personal charm and charisma, but will find that it takes more than charm to solve problems and more than charisma to be a statesman.
Yesterday, he spoke to children and did a workmanlike job in delivering a positive message. Kudos to him. Today, it's the grownups; a more discerning group that is still awaiting a concrete reason to believe this administration has the wherewithal to achieve much of anything of substance.
Certainly, I could be wrong and for the sake of the country, I hope I am. A stroke of genius on an difficult issue is just what we need right now; we could use a real solution to any problem right now, from any corner.
I can't say I'm optimistic. I can't even say that I'm cautiously optimistic.
Call me hopefully pessimistic.

I like her as a matter of principle, though I don't follow her writing.

I've had, and continue to have, those conversations all too often.
I think such conversations are a bigger rite of passage than an aliyah...
If you are a moderately well groomed and stable single male and you go into a synagogue, there will be a single Jewish man alert that goes out to the whole community before the cholent is served...

здравствуйте!
Throbert, you're a genius. I hadn't figured out what that was.
(Coincidentally, I was sitting at my son's speech appointment, where he is trying to learn how to say "s" and another consonant, and thinking how cruel it would be to be a Russian kid with the same speech problem--saying multiple consonants.
Interestingly, the closest Russian translation for "to lisp," which is kartávit', specifically means "to improperly pronounce the sounds of L and R". Of course, there are technical Russian words for other "speech impediments," such as difficulty in pronouncing "s" (which is sigmatizm, and similarly there is gammatsizm, for those who have trouble with the G/K sounds). But the only speech problem that has a non-clinical-ese name analogous to "lisp" is the L/R mispronunciation. I dunno what this means, though.
(And by the way, I only just now learned the words sigmatizm and gammatsizm, courtesy of the Russian wikipedia.)

I meant to add: And is there any deeper significance to the fact that in English, we have a specific word for mispronouncing S as TH, namely "lisp," but no similar word for Elmer Fudd's tendency to pronounce R and L as W?
