re: #8 HoosierHoops
Mine is not so fun...
It is common to enter a new year with optimism but I cannot seem to summon that up today. In fact I haven't felt this way since the post Vietnam, post Watergate, and Carter years leading up to Reagan. Reagan is credited with many things but what some will most remember him for is reversing the national head hanging that defined our outlook then.
The stage is set in 2010 for a lot of things to play out, and I see none for the better.
• If I were in Taiwan, or Iraq, or Israel, or Afghanistan, or Brazil, or Columbia, or any of a number of Eastern European countries I am on edge; who has my back? The Putin's, The Hu's, the Mashaal's, the Chavez's, the Mullahs are all certain to push the behavioral boundaries they have all tested in 2009.
• Our allies race to beat us to the exit door in Afghanistan.
• A suffering dollar, ballooning national debt, fear of job loss and stubbornly high unemployment.
• An expanding geography in the Terror Wars - met by a less than certain American military.
• Terrorist theater comes to American courtrooms.
• An ugly reactionary right wing invited into the day to day discourse.
• An unassuaged energy crisis looming.
• A President who talks, talks, talks...and talks.
• And on and on and on...
Some will blame Bush.
Yeah, Happy New Year to you all too.

To all people who have forgotten about the fragility and fleetingness of life...
Last Tuesday, I was supposed to spend the day with an old friend, a father figure to me. My sons and I were to help him with some moving related issues, heavy lifting etc. He had some books to give to me.
I sent my sons and called my friend to apologize that I was too busy working, would it be alright if I took a raincheck - the boys would come. Of course, he said that would be fine.
My sons went and spent the day. They came home.... having had the most wonderful experience... his insight, humor and profound wisdom.
I called my friend later in the week to thank him for the books. Several boxes full. Treasures, every one... I had to leave a message on his machine.
About an hour ago, I learned that my friend passed away Tuesday night in his sleep.

I have a dilemma.
On the one hand, I'm almost out of beer. I have just returned from an expedition to the fridge (it was ghastly: we lost three dogs and a sherpa) and I see that I only have one bottle of Shiner Black Lager left.
On the other hand, I'm far too comfy and lazy to get out in the cold and go to the store.

this legal thing is gonna take off like wildfire...blow it off if you want
President Obama's health-care bill is now moving toward final passage. The policy issues may be coming to an end, but the legal issues are certain to continue because key provisions of this dangerous legislation are unconstitutional. Legally speaking, this legislation creates a target-rich environment. We will focus on three of its more glaring constitutional defects.

About an hour ago, I learned that my friend passed away Tuesday night in his sleep.
Such a thing is unthinkable to us, who expect to wake in the morning to a new day, all is well. We need to believe that - it's what gets us out of bed in the morning. For some, like your friend, his time had come, just as it will for you and the rest of us. One day, some will think about you as you do about your friend, and you would never hold it against them that they didn't do more for you. What they did for you, the friendship and love they extended, was enough. It was enough for your friend, too.

Start getting back into a regular exercise program. I know most people have a "lose weight" resolution that fizzles after a while, but I got into really good shape in 2008 (after years of being lazy) and I need to get back into it. I actually love to exercise, but I've been lazy most of December. It will help when it gets warm out again and I can ride my bike again. Until then, it's back to the treadmill and weights.

Watch a WHOLE bunch to see where it sells, if you don't have a good idea of price. Sometimes it's a good deal, othertimes, WAY not a good deal. Put it in your favorites, and watch everything for a couple of weeks, just to see if/where it trades. You'll learn a lot & be a better buyer, if you decide to buy. My suggestions!

I am so sad for the mistake I've made... please do not lose sight of what is important in life...
I'm sure you gave him enough good companionship & company over the years, that there's nothing to beat yourself up for.

Good point, but it would be better to source them to something other than a cartoon depicting Muhammad in Hell. I'm not offended, but some people might be.
Muhammad in hell is a venerable if uncommon theme in Western art. There's even a fresco depicting it in Bologna Cathedral, Italy. I remember there was a terrorism scare because of it, some years ago.

True. It not over the line as art, not at all. It's just not the best choice when you're sourcing Koran verses, IMO. It's certainly defensible, though.
