All of you sent recipes and it appears we'll be able to get them into the book.
We "lost" one of the people doing the book, so Jaunte has taken over the design, etc. So, it will be published; but obviously much later than we anticipated and desired.

In looking at a stream of online articles, via news aggregators (such as the UK NewsNow), it's easy to get depressed about the current "culture" in the US.
I am referring in particular at how the various "climategate" and related AGW issues, and specifically the denier rants and ravings, are propagating through the the online chatter (websites, opinions, blogs, etc.)
I keep reminding myself I live in a country where only 1/4 or so of the people (as highlighted by Pew polling) accept that life forms around us evolved over time through natural selection, and so it is reasonable to expect that something as esoteric as climatology simply won't be understood by the majority...
... but it doesn't make me feel any better about where my country is heading.
There is a very real, and apparently growing, gap between the belief systems of groups of my fellow Americans.
This parallels other divisions in our society (wealth, language) that is growing faster than the rate of population growth (about 1% per year) itself would indicate.
I fear we will indeed turn into a nation where the marxists' accusations have (IMO falsely) in the past characterized the US: we will have a ruling class with all the money and knowledge (and the two go together) and a large mass of workers, uneducated, illiterate, and kept docile by a diet of religion, "bread" (Cheetos ?) and circuses (WWE, NASCAR, etc.)
It was not that way in my parent's childhood - even though poorly educated on a document level, they valued knowledge and expertise, and came from a time when owners and landlords were part of communities and, while there often were great inequalities of opportunity, the majority at least gave ascent to an ideal that could be thought of as Western Modernity, including progress through knowledge.
Populism is not new. However, the latest variant in this country seems to be highly amplified through a very powerful tool (the internet), and even more so, there appears to be powerful economic interests that see more potential (for increased wealth accumulation) in populism than progress. That latter part may be the new thing.

This has to be totally embarrassing:
Mint fires boss over coin typo
SANTIAGO (Reuters) – Chile's mint has sacked its managing director after he sent into circulation thousands of coins bearing an incorrect spelling of the country's name.
The 50-peso coins, worth around 10 U.S. cents each, were issued in 2008 with Chile spelled "Chiie" -- an error that was only noticed late last year.
"Director Gregorio Iniguez has been fired over a series of issues, including the misspelled coins, which have brought the institution into disrepute," a mint official told Reuters on Friday, speaking on condition of anonymity.
"Some of the coins are still in circulation. They still carry their value. Some collectors are buying them up because they feel they are rare," the official said.

Maybe - they've had the typo since 2008 - that's a lot of coins, I would think. They may be an oddity, but I'm not sure how rare it would be to have one of these things.

The possible sale of Russian air defense hardware to the Islamic Republic is a major irritant for both Israel and close ally the United States. Both have pressed Moscow not to go ahead with a deal that may help protect Iran's nuclear facilities from potential air strikes.
"There is a signed contract (to supply S-300 missiles) which we must implement, but deliveries have not started yet," Vladimir Nazarov, deputy secretary of Russia's Security Council secretary, told Interfax news agency in an interview.
"This deal is not restricted by any international sanctions, because the talk is about deliveries of an exclusively defensive weapon," he said.
Nazarov also said a military strike on Iran would be a big mistake and that the problems linked to Iran's nuclear program must be resolved only by diplomatic means.

Try to stick with it if you can. I almost gave up on it a couple times because at points I thought they were just randomly making shit up. The story does have a few dead ends but not as many as you might think at times. It's by far the best thing that's been on TV in a very long time. It might help to watch the enhanced versions since you're starting late. Trying to google some of the more mysterious elements of the story will turn up too many spoilers.

The band that is currently the most acclaimed band in metal has a lead guitarist who hybrid picks, because he learned as a banjo player.
Bluegrass and metal, they have quite a bit in common. fast virtuoso playing with lots of syncopation that requires impeccable timing. Music is universal.

True, but one middle season (3?) was intended to have a long story arc where Tony and his mother come to terms with some stuff, or line up their factions and keep fighting, or something. Nancy Marchand's sudden death forced them to hastily rewrite the whole thing, and it shows.

Walter, is there a way to catch up on "Lost" so a newbie can enjoy a new episode? Or is it only for initiates?
Do you mean someone who has never watch the show?

I didn't watch "The Sopranos" when it was originally broadcast - I downloaded the whole thing and watched it in sequence over several weeks. (Took a while.)
It was definitely one of the greatest story lines ever put on film, great characters, unexpected developments, and more than a few moments that made you sit up go ... whoa.
Lost has a long way to go to reach that kind of plateau.

This old place has seen a lot of music. The Kinks, Grateful Dead, Tom Petty, on and on. I really regret not seeing U2 there at one of their first shows in town. Bono climbed up the side of the stage somehow and held onto the flagpole before dropping down, I think into the crowd. [Link: memorialhallkc.com...]

Go here... watch the video "LOST: The Final Chapter" which is a recap of the first five seasons, and then watch the first three (or including tonight) for episode of this season on line... and then you will be caught up for next weeks new episode.

I agree, even though I never watched a single episode of Sopranos. Because Sopranos was a "reality styled mod drama" and LOST is science fiction. I would hope that they would not be comparable.
It's apples and oranges.

Great America Music Hall in SF was the bomb in the day...But seeing the Who at the Cow Palace was pretty cool..They weren't playing the corner pub..
NorCal is a great music scene..We had so many musicians come up from the Bay Area to play in Napa..In fact in the late 70's Napa had free concerts in the park to draw more tourist..You got to see everybody play.
It was great..Then one Sunday there was the infamous Garcia gang shooting in the park.. It Horrified Napa..There has never been a free concert since except out at the wineries...
It was weeks of Headlines..Shocked Citizens..Horrified City officials..
Bylines..Who are the Garcias? The gang scenes in Napa...
It went on for weeks...

The UK has a lot of crap TV, but when they're good they're very good, and I think it's partly because a 'season' there is only about six episodes long. Term limits for TV!
I'm generally in favor of term limits as an organizing principle for life. Biologically, it already is. Term limits for newscasters and op/ed writers. Term limits for relationships. Term limits for actors (actresses don't seem to need these).
Honestly, I don't want to see Harrison Ford, Woody Allen, ... any more. I like Gary Busey. I thought he was brilliant in Point Break and Big Wednesday. I don't need to see another Gary Busey movie. I'm tired of seeing people mail it in because someone's sending them a check. Tired of it.

The Gold standard of TV series..
There may never be another series reach that peak of genius..
99% of all series develop a few popular characters over a period of time...
But no...The Soprano's brought us hundreds of interesting characters and we got to connect with all of them...The writing was brilliant and most importantly.. It rang true...4 star

I've also really enjoyed one called "The Vicar of Dibley" - there are only six or eight or so episodes. Way too few, imo.
And a really long-running one called "Last of the Summer Wine". When my daughter was young, first grade or so, we would lie in bed on Sat evenings and watch that show - she loved it. I loved just being with her.

I saw it frozen tule (tulee?) fog once, January 09. It is deadly thick. The temperature was high 20's, 6 am in the morning, driving to the Shafter California Police department to put on a seminar. Anyway, we were using Dragon_Lady's point and shoot digital camera as a HUD, so I could see to creep along safely. For some reason the camera could see much further into the fog. Weirdest thing.

Lost is an American drama series that has aired on ABC since September 22, 2004. It has been nominated for a variety of different awards including 41 Primetime Emmy Awards (nine wins for the series, one for online content), 21 Teen Choice Awards, 39 Saturn Awards (ten wins), 11 Golden Reel Awards (five wins), eight Satellite Awards (one win), six Golden Globe Awards (one win), four Writers Guild of America Awards (one win), three Directors Guild of America Awards, two NAACP Image Awards (one win), two Screen Actors Guild Awards (one win), a BAFTA Award and a Peabody Award. Amongst the wins for the series are a Primetime Emmy Award for "Outstanding Drama Series", a Golden Globe Award for "Best Television Series – Drama" and a Screen Actors Guild Award for "Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series".

Actually, yes we do. Just wasn't familiar with the term. We live close to the Chesapeake bay and get thick, patchy fogs along and near the tributary rivers, which sounds similar to what you are describing. You can be in a thick fog, then drive out, then drive back in again. In CA though, looks like it can be a big, thick blanket, which is a little different.

When Lost first came out I watched an episode, but didn't get into it. Maybe watching in sequence will change the experience.
Hmmm, I don't know, but then I was never a big Sopranos fan, more of a Deadwood and Rome and The Wire gal.
You can't just pick up LOST in the middle, you really do need to watch from the beginning.
I promise, it's worth it.
And I agree with the rest of you about watching TV on DVDs, I love watching whole seasons in a weekend.
Anyone watching Caprica?

My dad did that (also made grape juice for us when we were kids.) I don't know the specifics, but it seemed very, very time consuming and required a lot of work.

[Video]This was a very disturbing scene when I first saw it many years ago. I saw it recently while slightly drunk and found it hilarious.
Ha! We have to have an I Claudius binge as well. That scene wasn't so disturbing for me because i'd already read Suetonius and the Graves novel the TV series is based on-- both follow Suetonius pretty damn closely.
I can't remember but the whole I Claudius series might still be on the laptop I left with you. :)

Doesn't matter. Just grow a few vines, and stomp the grapes with your bare feet. Film that, put it on a pay-per-view website, and you'll make a tidy sum from a niche pr0n market.

I figure a good nursery should have advice on which grapes will grow in my area. Pinot Noir seems to be the grape of choice around here in Oregon. I can figure out the process but I'm wondering if it's worth the effort and garden space.

Never tried it, and I don't think I could ever grow the right kind of grapes to make great wine. And great grapes come from the right kind of soil.
The John Cleese documentary Wine for the Confused explains it some. I think you can watch online on Netflix.

Wine Facts, Statistics and Trivia
But wait! How much wine can you get from one vine?
* 40 clusters / vine
* 10 bottles / vine
* 1 barrel / 30 vines
Ok, I think it's supposed to be 10 bottles per vine. I think that makes it worth the effort. At roughly $10 a bottle at the store investing in a couple vines could add up to some savings.

He is opposed to abortion in rape and incest, even in cases where the mother's health is at risk. He thinks abortions should only be illegal if the mom is 100 percent going to die without it.
He also voted against a law that would have made discrimination based on sexuality illegal.
Those two things combined makes in far-right in my book. (Not to the point of wingnut, but still far right.) But your point is noted. Most conservatives I know (and myself) are pretty moderate, so my perspective might be skewed...

Anyone who would force a 12 year old girl impregnated by her father, or the victim of any other rape, that she 'has' to continue the pregnancy counts as a wingnut in my book. Fullstop.

Your perspective isn't skewed in my eyes. Opposing abortion in rape or incest cases is a step too far in my eyes. Nor do I tend to favor candidates who think its OK to not hire someone because they're gay. I'll still vote for Brady (because he would be better than Pat Quinn) but I'm not happy about it.

I saw an "interest spot" on some show (maybe Huell Howser's?) about a winery that could not afford the refrigeration units needed to cool picked grapes before the pressing. Their solution was to hand pick the grapes at night, during full moons.
