I’m not nearly as big a fan of the 80’s synth heavy Rush era, most of my music collection is metal. The sweet spot for me is Permanent Waves, Hemispheres, Moving Pictures. I like Presto and Counterparts as well. ^^ Test For Echo was the tour I saw them live.

Speaking of perspective…I work for a prayer ministry, and we got a prayer request the other day from a fellow in India who said he’s seen videos of American soldiers beating and torturing women and children, and wanted us to pray for the victims and for the American army to repent, etc. Obviously the videos are fakes, and probably very poorly done…but people are all too willing to believe stuff like that, and Obama becoming President hasn’t changed anything.

The result is a tax system that exempts almost half the country from paying for programs that benefit everyone, including national defense, public safety, infrastructure and education. It is a system in which the top 10 percent of earners — households making an average of $366,400 in 2006 — paid about 73 percent of the income taxes collected by the federal government.

I have a question - how come Hotair.com and michellemalkin.com’s registration are ALWAYS closed? I’ve been trying/hoping to register on both those sites for well over a year now, and they. are. always. closed. Period.
It would have anything to do with attempting to stifle debate now, would it? I couldn’t imagine they’d do such a thing.
From what I’ve noticed, both of them have exactly ONE “liberal” or dissenting voice registered, and it’s really more like a caricature of a dissenting voice; more like straight guy in a comedy from the 1930’s. In fact, I’m pretty sure that on Malkin’s site the “dissenting voice” is actually a right-winger in disguise, because the shit that comes out of his/her mouth is so lame as to be cringe-inducing. As if it were like, “See, we let one of you on here and you just continue to make a jackass out of yourself.”
I really wish I could register. I realize I’d probably only last 1/2 a day. But it’d be worth it just to TRY and throw some reality into the mix over there.

news update:
Law firm: Diplomat released after plane bomb scare
A law firm representing the Qatar embassy says the diplomat who prompted an airplane bomb scare has been released by authorities after questioning.
A spokesperson for the firm Brown Lloyd James said Thursday the diplomat was on his way back to Washington. In a statement, Qatar’s ambassador to the U.S. said the diplomat was traveling from Washington to Denver on business and didn’t do anything threatening.
Authorities speaking on condition of anonymity said they don’t think the man was trying to hurt anyone and he won’t be charged with a crime.
Two law enforcement officials say suspicions arose when the man apparently tried to sneak a smoke in the airplane bathroom. They say he was asked about the smoky smell and joked about trying to light his shoes — leading air marshals to restrain him.

Obama has pushed tax cuts for low- and middle-income families and tax increases for the wealthy, arguing that wealthier taxpayers fared well in the past decade, so it’s time to pay up. The nation’s wealthiest taxpayers did get big tax breaks under Bush, with the top marginal tax rate reduced from 39.6 percent to 35 percent, and the second-highest rate reduced from 36 percent to 33 percent.
But income tax rates were lowered at every income level. The changes made it relatively easy for families of four making $50,000 to eliminate their income tax liability

Because they are too much of cheap asses to provide monitors for their sites, or they don’t trust enough of their own registrants to be monitors (like LGF does.)
SixDegrees is registered at MM site, and has posted their before.
I am registered at HotAir but haven’t posted anything. KT was of course registered there until his little, um, exercise.
Charles readily bans trolls, the violent, and the deranged. The problem HA faces is that when they do get around to banning the faithful there can object. As for MM’s own site (she sold HA), I can only surmise that she is only interested in having nominal commenters, to fill up space and say she has followers, as opposed to anyone who adds anything original or challenging.

He took down this post of mine - the one HE INITIALLY HAD NO PROBLEM POSTING - in which I was trying to goad him into saying something positive about Virginia and the Confederate History Month, and then promptly deleted it and replaced it with this….
Ignore “Forrest,” LTB: on one of my Searchlight posts, the same person commented as “Hugh Jass”:
“Sad. I’ll bet less than 2K people show up. No one rational gives a sh!t, McCain. No one.”
Right. And the most widely-quoted crowd estimate was 9,000-plus. The rest of that comment was so personal as to make me want to spend a minute seeing who owns that address. (He’s referring to where I wrote, in the same post, (“Countdown till your wife leaves you because you have no money and you’re not a real journalist: T-minus 1 year.”)

Well look, if you are going to go on somebody’s own website and challenge them you also have to own the idea that you are on private property. I have no respect for RSM, yet what he chooses to have on his site is his business and while it is certainly fair for me or you or anyone to critique (even pointedly and harshly) what he writes, I don’t expect him to pay for it (which is what a website owner has to do to keep the url and buy hosting services.)
Therein lay a serious problem for the internet taking over the role of the newspaper - holding people accountable for what they write. In a purely digital world it is very easy to just delete the past.

Totally agree. However I think it’s more than just a tad insane to go about espousing all this “America, Fuck Yeah!” stuff, and then not allow even a modicum of rational debate. To not allow any dissenting voice to be heard, in any context, at all.
But hypocrisy is just par for the course with those freakazoids. .

No Charges for Qatar Diplomat After Mid-Air Bomb Scare
The Qatari diplomat who caused a mid-air security scare won’t face charges after claiming he was trying to light his shoes on fire when it appears he was simply smoking in the bathroom.
Federal officials said Mohammed al Modadi was on official business when he boarded United Airlines Flight 663 from Washington to Denver, giving him diplomatic immunity. A law firm spokesman told The Associated Press that al Modadi has been released and was headed back to Washington.
More than 160 passengers and crew were on board when flight attendants noticed smoke coming from the bathroom and notified federal air marshals on the plane, government sources said.
When the marshals demanded to know what he was doing, the man identified himself as a diplomat from Qatar and responded, perhaps sarcastically, “I’m trying to light my shoes on fire.”

((forfot to mention)) Both yesterday and the day before were GORGEOUS
Mid 80’s
Slight breeze
Not a cloud in the sky!
Rained here all day yesterday. Raining today too, and cold temperatures forecast for the weekend.
I glanced at the backyard and saw that during my grandkids’ visit, on the days it didn’t rain, they pulled out all the logs that the landscapers stacked up at the back of the yard and scattered them everywhere.
Oh great, now the lawn maintenance guys will have to collect and restack the logs before they can mow the yard, and of course they will add an extra charge.

Hamas to halt rocket attacks on Israel
GAZA CITY, Gaza, April 6 (UPI) — Israel won’t have an excuse to launch a major Gaza offensive because Hamas has decided to continue its suspension of rocket attacks, sources in Gaza City say.The sources told The Jerusalem Post Hamas and several other Palestinian factions held emergency meetings recently about the need to maintain an unofficial cease-fire.
The groups agreed to stop firing rockets at Israel, the sources told the Post.
GAZA CITY, Gaza, April 7 (UPI) — Six Palestinians were injured Wednesday when mortar shells fired at Israel landed instead in Palestinian territory, Gaza emergency sources say.
One of the shells hit a house in the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Hanoun, starting a small fire, Israel’s Haaretz newspaper reports.
The mortar attack comes just two days after Hamas and three armed Palestinian factions announced a voluntary moratorium on rocket attacks.

Hold that nuclear programme, Kim Jong-ll, the catwalk is calling
There is a new fashionista in town. And I’m told he is a “global vogue” whose style is “spreading expeditiously worldwide”. How exciting! A new Alexander McQueen perhaps? Well, no, actually. It’s Kim Jong-II.
According to Pyongyang’s official website, the leader of North Korea is now “in fashion world-wide”. They call his outfits “modest-looking suits”. I call them shapeless tragedies in taupe.
….The article quotes an “unidentified French fashion expert” who said that world fashion is following Kim Jong-II’s style.

It is a matter of perspective!
I’ve recently acquired and am playing a solitaire wargame called “D-Day Omaha Beach”. Covers the first twelve hours of the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 - and actually just the activity by two US divisions landing on Omaha Beach.
Given that recent perspective I see that photo and think “kill zone”. :p
For those of a cinematic bend the beginning of _Saving Private Ryan_ features a company of US Rangers landing on said beach. (And that unit is included in the game.)
Playing this gives me even more respect for our veterans who faced this sort of horror. And as I’ve said previously a game, a movie, or probably just about any other “simulation” is probably trying to experience a bonfire by watching a match burn.

She said President Kurmanbek Bakiyev had not yet resigned but was trying to rally support in the country’s south.
Clashes in the capital, Bishkek, and other towns left 75 dead and more than 1,000 hurt, the health ministry said.”

IRS Launches New Global Program to Target ‘High Wealth Individuals’
The Internal Revenue Service has launched a new global program to target what it calls “high wealth individuals,” IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman said Monday.
“Through our new global high wealth operating unit we are taking a unified look at the entire web of business and economic entities controlled by high wealth individuals so we can better assess the risk such arrangements pose to tax compliance,” Shulman said at the National Press Club on Monday.
Shulman said the IRS is using “our robust and evolving enforcement program that ensures that everyone pays what they owe.”The IRS initiated its Global High Wealth Industry group in the fall. Schulman told an October 26 meeting of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants that it would be part of “the globalization of tax administration,” which he called a “game changing trend” in tax enforcement.
“This brings me to another important development—a game-changing trend—the globalization of tax administration,” said Shulman.

We have the Swiss in a bind because we can indict one of their big banks here. That is a big club. The rest, come one at a time as we find opportunities. I agree with you that the havens have no incentive to be helpful, absent some other financial, legal or diplomatic leverage.

Investors don’t put up 100% of the money for new businesses. Even if you ignore the amazing amount of infrastructure and talent pool they’re able to draw form— things they wouldn’t have elsewhere in the world, many US industries are directly subsidized.
In addition, there are legions of lawyers who dedicate themselves to helping investors minimize their risk.
The thing about a system like capitalism is that large enough amounts of wealth allows you to do qualitatively different things.

Well, yes, literally taking money from the ultrarich and giving it to the poor would stimulate the economy. It’s not a good idea for a lot of other reasons, though.
Consumers are just as important as capitalists, in capitalism. You really need to have enough wealth and income at the lower strata to be able to afford the goods and services that capitalists provide. It’s a symbiotic, not an aggressive relationship.

Sorry for the delayed response.
Looking at each tax in isolation leads to all kinds of “unfair” results, and is frankly a fool’s errand. But if you want to look at federal tax load, don’t forget payroll taxes, which get capped for high wage earners and start at dollar one.
The disincentive argument is a non-starter at today’s tax rates or at any likely to be imposed any time soon. While it is possible for a taxing authority to set rates that high, that is a political impossibility here in the US. Claiming that they are there now, or are likely to go there in the foreseeable future, is just hysteria.
