Another Oil Platform Explodes in the Gulf

US News • Views: 2,776

Another oil drilling platform has exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, but luckily no workers were killed. The latest reports say that officials don’t know whether oil is leaking from the well; but it was not producing oil and gas at the time of the explosion.

The good news: this platform is in relatively shallow water (340 feet), so if there is a leak it will be much easier to plug.

I said on the LNDT, it might be doing maintenance. You need fuel to run stuff. Also, a rig explosion is different from a well explosion. Glad everyone is ok.

If it wasn’t drilling, or producing, then why would it explode?

The Financial Times reported that employees from Apache and Mariner, along with thousands of oil industry workers, rallied in Houston to protest the Obama administration’s offshore drilling moratorium that was designed as a safety precaution after BP’s disastrous Gulf oil spill. A Mariner Energy employee chastised the Obama administration for its drilling moratorium, which would not have affected the rig that exploded today:

Companies ranging from Chevron to Apache bussed in up to 5,000 employees to the Houston convention centre to underline to Washington the industry’s contribution to the country. […]

“I have been in the oil and gas industry for 40 years, and this administration is trying to break us,” said Barbara Dianne Hagood, senior landman for Mariner Energy, a small company. “The moratorium they imposed is going to be a financial disaster for the gulf coast, gulf coast employees and gulf coast residents.”the Financial Times reported that employees from Apache and Mariner, along with thousands of oil industry workers, rallied in Houston to protest the Obama administration’s offshore drilling moratorium that was designed as a safety precaution after BP’s disastrous Gulf oil spill. Human error.

re: #2 Major Tom

A production rig has plenty of equipment and materials on board that can be hazardous and/or explosive under the right circumstances. That includes gas vapors, improperly stored materials, poor security/safety protocols, electrical faults, etc.

Not enough information at present to know what sparked the explosion.

But the reports do say that it had been producing natural gas, oil, and condensates in the last week of August.

OK… Rigs are pretty big though, right? Weren’t all the workers in the water? Don’t they have fire fighting abilities on the rigs? …And does anyone know the substantial differences between a drilling rig and an oil platform?

10 Cannadian Club Akbar  Thu, Sep 2, 2010 10:58:27am

Mariner’s safety record in the Gulf, based on federal fines, has been largely unnoteworthy. Last year, it was fined $55,000 for two incidents in the Gulf of Mexico, records from the former Minerals Management Service indicate. In one, it was fined $20,000 because a helicopter platform was taken out of service due to a fire. In another, it was fined $35,000 after an inspectors cited it for lacking adequate contingency plans for an operation

Thankfully there were no serious injuries this time.

Now we wait and see what the damage to the rig is, and if it’s caused any environmental damage.

This was a production platform; not a drilling platform. A production platform is used to extract the oil after drilling is complete. Very different operations; drilling crews don’t work on production platforms, as a rule, and vice-versa.

Drilling operations typically call for 50-120 or so employees on the rig at a time.
There were only 13 on this one, and apparently, production wasn’t even going on. I’m guessing that the explosion was caused by fuel needed to keep the rig running, as CCA said in #1.

Mariner officials said it produced an average of 9.2 million cubic feet of natural gas per day and 1,400 barrels of oil and condensate a day during the last week of August

The Paris Museum Pass is one of the best deals in Paris. The 4 day pass is e48.00 (about USA60.00) and gives you admission to over 70 museums and monuments (like Versailles) and the card allows you to jump otherwise sometimes lengthy queues. With an average price of e8-e10 for attractions (e15 for Versailles), this pass easily pays for itself times over.

Good point. And it is apparently a much smaller platform than the DW Horizon was (only had 13 crew, versus I think 130 on the Horizon). Still, it doesn’t help those who are arguing for more drilling to have a rig (drilling or production) go off like this.

I don’t like the moratorium; but at the time Horizon happened, I don’t think Obama had much choice.

The whole thing is being reviewed right now; there is a possibility it will be lifted before November; even if not, November is only a few months away.

Many companies (like the one my husband works for) kept their highly skilled employees; his company hasn’t laid of anyone with drilling experience.

The people suffering are the sort of rank and file rig hands, who, honestly, can’t just put on a suit and tie and grab a briefcase and find work. But they should get some relief from the BP fund.

That’s always a plus.

Oh BTW, my son having driven back and forth to work ONCE seems to think he should be allowed to drive my car 45 mins or so on Friday night to a friend’s house.
Yeah.
Not gonna happen.

yet.

ouch.
45 minute drive - it’s a bit much.
I didn’t let babygirl drive on the interstate for the first year she drove; or rather, she could, but one of us had to be with her.

I may be green with envy (who is it here that lives in Paris…you know who you are…they really make me green) BUT I am so enjoying hearing about your plans. I love traveling though the rest of you.

Newt Gingrich and Anti-gay, Pro Terrorism Evangelist Team up for national event

in the heat of mid-term election season, this weekend’s event in Sacramento — put on by Kansas City-based preacher and noted gay-hater Lou Engle — is taking on a decidedly political feel.

The event is being used as a kick-off for a series of events, spearheaded by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, aimed at mobilizing the religious right.

TheCall Sacramento is expected to draw 50,000 people to California’s capitol, where they will apparently pray for, among other things, a favorable outcome in the legal wrangling over the state’s gay-marriage ban.

Considering that Engle has been linked to a bill proposed in Uganda that called for imprisoning and killing openly gay people, we’re sure you can figure which outcome he considers favorable. But just in case, former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee is here to remind you, and to invite you to join him in Sac Town:

I’ll be glad when they finally get us those transporters we were promised.

Each time a pet dies I promise myself we will not get another…but something always happens. A stray comes by and I can’t turn them away. One of our dogs died last year and even though I was sad I did have a bit of “One down 5 to go” then a cat had kittens under the house and then moved the rest of the kitties and left one behind and well, what are you gonna do?
Earlier this summer a neighbor moved and left their damn cat behind and now he lives at my house outside until I can save up enough money to get him fixed.

We now have one dog, 4 cats. We’ve had as many as 6 cats. Same thing - they show up - we take care of ‘em. Also, the raccoons, which love cat food. I quit leaving cat food out at night to sort of try to discourage strays and raccoons - the raccoons figured it out very quickly, and now show up during the day. So really, we know from post BP catastrophe reporting, that there had been a revolving door for oil officials into regulatory positions and rubber stamp for the oil industry for years when it came to regulating these ventures.

This was going on for years. The default assumption should be that these rigs are simply not safe.

Do we need yet another catastrophe before we wise up?

Why spend billions on something that will only help the oil sector, and not help domestic oil prices at all, since there is no such thing as a domestic oil economy? Oil is fungible.

Why take the risk?

Those billions could easily be put to building reactors, wind farms and smart grids.

That would actually get us towards being energy independent and in the long run make our economy vastly stronger. It would also help save us from eventual eco-collapse.

But would be a sensible and non-suicidal thing to do. After all, those who run America have decided that your nations future, children’s lives and many species are worth sacrificing on the alter of enriching oil ticks. Many Americans are convinced this is a good thing too.

Why do people not get this?

All oil production and all fossil fuel production will eventually stop. It will either happen in an intelligent controlled manner in the near term - where we save our civilization, or it will all come crashing down when people worry much more about food, water and shelter than they do about oil, and a whole barrel full of dollars will be more useful as kindling.

In the mean time though, the oil ticks are gorging. Their parasitic heads deeply embedded into the flesh of America, and all too many Americans see the bloated, blood filled abdomen as something good.
