I can not put into words just how much I enjoy not being a superstitious goober.
Argh don’t get me started. Billions of humans have lived before us so the Earth would be crawling with “ghosts”. Nope, instead the only ghosts that have been fabricated reside in architecturally significant homes and typically died in the 19th or early 20th centuries.
What is there like a ghost rule that means they have to hang out in the place the croaked? Damn, if I was a ghost and kicked the bucket in Newark, NJ I’d head down to Tahiti or someplace nice.

He was just helping me out, though. Apparently, on top of having an over night groundskeeper, there was also private security that did the occasional drive-through of the grounds. He explained that if they had found me first, I’d be sleeping in a drunk tank instead of a cemetery.

When I lived in Washington I spent a lot of time hanging out in graveyards. There was always one close to were ever I lived. On a nice day I’d grab a forty and a book and just drink and read for a couple of hours. It’s just like hanging out at a public park, with the added bonus being that 99.9% of the people there have permanently STFU.

In the early years of the 20th century, San Francisco got rid of all non-military cemeteries in the county—hence Colma, our very own necropolis. Population is less than 2000. If you count only the living.
When I was a kid, there was a little playground attached to the Jewish Community Center that we’d be taken to to play. The whole area had been one big graveyard at one point, and it still had several tombstones and a bit of fountain in place.

Used to spend a lot of time in Colma too. Just the boneyards. Lots of very interesting and beautiful headstones and mausoleums. The one near where I live now only has little plaques on the graves, nothing else is allowed. Very boring.

Alabama has a number of old graveyards dating back to the civil war. Some that no one but the locals know about. My ex’s uncle always took us. Just during the day, and we would look at the headstones. A lot of young women who died in childbirth, 17-20 yrs old with a little grave next to it. “Baby Smith” some would say. Sad.
They lived in Eufaula. The founder of the town and his family were buried in a mausoleum way off the beaten path. Huge trees with hanging Spanish moss. The sun would shine through in a haze. About 150 yrs old. Their slaves were buried next to them in unmarked graves with railroad ties to mark off the area. It was said to be an honor for them to be buried in the same graveyard, if you can imagine something like that.

Cholera epidemic spreads in Haiti; Nearly 200 dead
A cholera epidemic spread in central Haiti on Friday as aid groups rushed doctors and supplies to fight the country’s worst health crisis since January’s earthquake. Nearly 200 deaths had been confirmed and more than 2,000 people were ill.The first two cases of the disease outside the rural Artibonite region were confirmed in Arcahaie, a town that is closer to the quake-devastated capital, Port-au-Prince.
Officials are concerned the outbreak could reach the squalid tarp camps where hundreds of thousands of quake survivors live in the capital.
“It will be very, very dangerous,” said Claude Surena, president of the Haitian Medical Association. “Port-au-Prince already has more than 2.4 million people, and the way they are living is dangerous enough already.”
The Ministry of Health confirmed 194 deaths and 2,364 cases of cholera, said Imogen Wall, a spokeswoman for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.“It’s concentrated in Artibonite right now and we’re doing our best to keep it that way,” Wall said.
Dozens of patients lay on the floor awaiting treatment at the St. Nicholas hospital in the seaside city of St. Marc, some of them brushing away flies on mattresses stained with human feces.[…]
Haiti is not much on the front page these days, but here we see the reality of extreme poverty and a broken society, where basics such as sanitation become a luxury.
I’ve become pretty numb to all the sorrows of the world over the years, with so much going on. That’s a sad statement, too.

Excellent. I always told his uncle he should lead a tour there. He knew every inch of that town. On the way down to that graveyard, he all of a sudden stopped and started picking at the ground. He pulled up some wild onions! And we ate them! More like scallions, but sweeter. He was a cool guy.

We had a Hessian POW buried on the installation at Picatinny Arsenal. His grave was marked with a large horizontal tablet, rather than a headstone. The post historian had it covered with a half-inch plexiglass sheet.

Yea. I started to take notice of the number of young women. The young men I always figured were war casualties.
I also felt that no one visits these graves. It’s nice to be remembered. We would be driving to the store and Gene would say, “Wait a sec, I want to show you something.” And off we’d go down some dirt path to a secluded graveyard.

Alabama has a number of old graveyards dating back to the civil war. Some that no one but the locals know about. My ex’s uncle always took us. Just during the day, and we would look at the headstones. A lot of young women who died in childbirth, 17-20 yrs old with a little grave next to it. “Baby Smith” some would say. Sad.
Lots of those up here. There’s one from the 1840’s I visit reguarly. The ones you mention are bad enough but the stones that make me ache are the ones for the 2 - 6 year old children dying of diseases we have vaccines for. The same diseases making a comeback because of stupidity… :banghead:

I spent the night in a “haunted house” once. I was a teenager, and everyone was talking up the “fact” that the ghost of a young woman was always appearing in the room I would be sleeping in. I suppose they were trying to spook me or something.
Long story short, after one fat spliff and several hours of trying to stay awake, I eventually succumbed to sleep and woke up disappointed. I guess “Hot Ghost Chick” was not on the menu that night.

Pound the nominal incumbent in campaign ads by linking Nye with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., the liberal power broker Republicans love to hate.
But this week, Rigell supporters decided to freelance and forward racially charged e-mails to friends. On Tuesday Karen Beauchamp recommended an online video called “Barack Obama, the angry negro.”
The former member of the Virginia Beach City Committee warned colleagues, “the language is strong, but the sentiment is right! We will take America back.”
An ESPN anchor likes to say, “once is an accident, twice is a trend.’’ Day before Beauchamp’s faux pas, David Bartholomew, chairman of the Virginia Beach Republican Party, resigned after it was learned he forwarded an e-mail about a black dog applying for welfare. The message went viral and drew condemnation from Republicans and Democrats.

I would really suck as a scrip junkie. He offered me whatever I wanted, vicodin, percoset, demoral. I selected Tylenol III codeine because I think it would make me less loopy. I’m not a fan of loopy. They make me dizzy, too.
I really did need it after the novcaine wore off, but they only last about 4 hours. I woke up at 3a like someone hit me in the mouth.

Feeding South Florida was f/k/a Daily Bread Food Bank, but they had a terrible fire and lost 93,000 lbs of food. They became FSF and are almost completely restocked by Dade and Broward residents now.

The only good news is that in Illinois, the unemployment laws do somewhat favor ex-employees. In order to deny benefits, an employers must show willful misconduct, which means they can’t just fire you and refuse to pay.

The House can pass anything they want, but most of it will be targeted to force Democrats to take unpopular positions to set the stage for 2012. Guy’s screwing up, or looked funny at someone, or whatever it might be, and if he’s past the 90 day mark (and hence, in principle, eligible for unemployment) we put insane pressure and impossible tasks on him, double-down on the abuse and contempt, and, in general, do everything we can to make him quit.
He doesn’t quit, we have “the talk” - “Look, we’ll write you an excellent letter of introduction and recommendation…”

Yeah, but I tell you, we’ve got it down to an art-form. If you’re on salary (and you’re a sucker if you let them do that to you) then you’re on-call at all hours, and failure to respond in a timely manner to telephone calls or emails (even those received after normal business or even bedtime hours) can be enough to make for a VERY unpleasant day when you get back in.
It’s crappy, but it’s the way of the world, and better them than me, I suppose

In other news, Guanxi88’s tobacco processing - part of long-term preparations to establish himself as Guadalupe County’s Baron of Bootlegging and ‘baccy when the wheels fall off - entered a new phase with the final round of experimentation on tobacco sauces and casings.
Using a blend of blackstrap molasses, apple cider, everlear as a soaking sauce prior to blocking and pressing his homegrown tobacco (note: this ‘sauce’ is eminently potable, and in fact is in his glass at this moment) he has succeeded in taming the native harshness of his tobacco crop and producing a pipe tobacco that compares favorably with many of the old-school codger burleys. Experimentation continues with his hungarian and turkish tobacco crops, with encouraging early results on his homegrown and home-processed cigarette tobacco.

Someone had stolen his emergency wind up/solar/battery operated radio, which he had in case of hurricane’s and stuff like that, and I told him I had one I could give him. He sent me an email last Tuesday, and I sent him a reply, I’ve not heard from him, nor do I think he has been on LGF since then.
Anyway, I mailed him the radio today and I just wanted to make sure he knew it was on it’s way and to be on the lookout for it.
I emailed him again today to let him know it was mailed, but no answer.
I was concerned, considering he is usually on here at least twice a day, before and after his work shift.

They’re clearly in love with Montecito, in spite of the fact that they can no longer afford to live there. I can sympathize with them a bit there, but the massive paranoia, money issues, grifting and dumbshittery is no way to deal with it.

By me, we have this passive-aggressive thing working for us. Guy’s screwing up, or looked funny at someone, or whatever it might be, and if he’s past the 90 day mark (and hence, in principle, eligible for unemployment) we put insane pressure and impossible tasks on him, double-down on the abuse and contempt, and, in general, do everything we can to make him quit.
He doesn’t quit, we have “the talk” - “Look, we’ll write you an excellent letter of introduction and recommendation…”
I guess employment law where you are is quite different from ours. Here in New Zealand “encouraging” someone to quit is called constructive dismissal, and it can cost employers a tidy sum.

I was the first person to post that Juan Williams was fired at the end of an overnight thread the other day. And I have posted one or two thoughts on what happened. I said off the bat that his statements were misguided, but not hostile in the way Rick Sanchez’s were IMHO. But I think we should ask ourselves a tough question here. Was it handled properly, or was a respected man treated like crap because he dared to break intellectual “bread” with the “enemy.”. it seems to me he may have been treated poorly for trying in his own way to be bipartisan.

There should be an ombudsman with clout who can monitor the programming. And if changes are necessary, make them. Quite Concur. I don’t think they even expect to actually defund NPR. At a guess, I’d say their plan is this:
1. Go after NPR to gain votes and take the House (maybe the Senate).
2. Pass a defund bill through the House and try to maneuver it through the Senate.
3. If the Senate Democrats block the bill, complain about that to fire up the base.
4. If the bill passes the Congress, Obama will veto it and they can then use that to bash Obama for being statist.
“Defund NPR!” is little more than a game.

I believe WIlliam’s termination was justified by the terms of his contract with NPR - as fearmongering is not their business, and while he is in their employ his public comments reflect on them.

I believe WIlliam’s termination was justified by the terms of his contract with NPR - as fearmongering is not their business, and while he is in their employ his public comments reflect on them.
I do not see his comments as “fearmongering”, and neither does David Frum.

I feel that PBS is a positive force in our society. And I don’t want people there to lose their jobs. I worked at A PBS station at the start of my career. Like any organization, it has flaws, but generally is fine by me.
As you probably know, PBS is not NPR is not APM is not PRI. All the various public broadcasting entities are separate production and distribution organizations with distinct missions, and each competes with the other for programming slots on public radio stations.

I don’t think Soros had anything directly to do with Williams’ firing. But I do think he targets his donations to support a leftward trend in politics in this country. That is his right, but I feel that pushing for such a trend is destructive. And I do feel that since the Soros angle is in play (even if only from wingnuts), they should disclose his support for MM in their articles. Even Fox News discloses if Newscorp or Rupert Murdoch is involved in a story they report.

The fact the view “may be common held” says more for the American psyche and base instincts than it does for regard for truth about the actual situation.
And what Williams is meant to do is “analyse” - not commentate they are two completely different fucntions. An analyst says “it’s an understandable feeling to be nervous after 9/11, but religiously dressed Muslims have not got a record in the western world of committing the attacks we are nervous of”. But the NPR statement is as follows, and they clearly seem to think he was off reservation -

I feel that that is important.

I routinely confuse Catholics and Christians into being the same.
My point was simple.
Christians are a majority.
Muslims are not.
Many find nothing wrong with what Juan said, yet would be deeply offended with what I said.
Those who do, need to reflect on why disparing on religion is ok and another isn’t.

Nothing. From where I sit things are looking great. Yesterday started with a few things up in the air and those ended up coming through positively by noon. Then in the evening they got even better. Long story short I’m starting to work on a big project with a local school and community group which I’d like to fold into a masters degree. They’re all totally into it and think it’s great. So great in fact that there is a good chance that I will potentially be able to get my tuition paid through the funding for the project. How totally cool is that?

First playthroughs are always plagued with OCD hand-wringing over how many starting points to put into which skills, in order to obtain a subjectively imperceptible but statistically significant 2% increase in critical hits (or similar).

Ok, I wondered about that because the chick in the beginning that teaches you shoot and craft items can die or be killed before she teaches you anything. I had to restart the game a few times because I kept killer her and then realized that I still didn’t understand the crafting elements of the game.

Picking on PBS is a favorite past time of hard-line conservatives. I vaguely remember similar calls for defunding way back in the early 1980s. The knuckle-draggers take great offense that an actual channel exists that in essence, contradicts their mindset and agenda.
Yep. It’s like we’ve taken a ride in a time machine. Calls to defund PBS and Phyllis Schlafly still has a microphone! All we need now is the ghost of Jerry Falwell!

Maybe. But there isn’t much time left before election day. It may pop up as an election issue in the ending days but I doubt it will sway any votes. Everything will focus on these last two weeks. By the time election day comes all of this will have blown over. However, it may be a sign of things to come as KT indicated.

Regarding your trip to Orlando. If you want cool rides, you might consider Islands of Adventure instead. I thought the coasters and such were better than the Magic Kingdom. MK is really for kids in my opinion. Universal is the more “adult” park.

Yeah, I’m a little worried how much of the story I’m going to miss by killing everyone I meet. I suspect the game is worthy of a couple replays just to see the different choices to be made and the consequences.
The thing I like so much about Fallout 3 and NV is that you’re only given a generalized idea of why the world is the way it is. There’s so much room for your imagination to fill in the blanks. You start out in a world that is definitely intended to be a version of the US, where the unthinkable has happened. Everyone is at the throats of the people over the valley a half a mile away, and you can turn on the radio and listen to Cole Porter sing “Anything Goes”:

Disney, IIRC doesn’t have many adult rides.

That attraction was originally at the New York Worlds Fair in 1964 (63?), then moved to Disney… it was sponsored by Pepsi I think… I stood in line for an hour and a half… and that tune has stuck with me since then.

It’s going to be very interesting to see what the Republican congress ends up doing. I suspect lots of votes to defund NPR, outlaw Tides, arrest George Soros, impeach Obama and other silly crap. I just can’t imagine them using their time constructively to help the country.

Ok… I just did a little Google-fu, looks like the parks are not close to each other to start with, I have no rented transportation for the 3 days, and I’m financially limited to probably staying on the Disney property and make use of the shuttles to Disney attractions…
That’s fine… since I’ve never been to a Disney park, I guess being there is better than not being there… I’ll have fun.

That’s what I intend to do. Monday I’m splitting for the 82 dollar ticket for the Magic Kingdom, and Tuesday, we only have about 6 hours… but the girlfriend insists on purchasing 164 dollars worth of tickets (2) to spend some time at Epcot.

What I do find interesting is Whoopi made a big stink about O’Reilly’s Muslim remarks a few weeks ago when he was on The View (she even walked off the set), yet turns around and supports William’s remarks (on the same show), which were in the least as wrongheaded as O’Reilly’s.
I don’t think Whoopi is that big or consistent an intellectual force.

As you probably know, PBS is not NPR is not APM is not PRI. All the various public broadcasting entities are separate production and distribution organizations with distinct missions, and each competes with the other for programming slots on public radio stations.
Many PBS TV stations have radio affiliates (sister stations, if you will) that are NPR affiliates, so I see PBS and NPR as very similar entities.
