Nazi war criminal 'butcher of Bolzano' dies
A Nazi war criminal extradited by Canada to Italy to serve a sentence of life imprisonment has reportedly died in hospital overnight at the age of 86.
Michael Seifert, a corporal in the Nazi SS known as the "butcher of Bolzano", was a guard at a Nazi transit camp in northern Italy from June 1944 to April 1945.
He was sentenced by an Italian court in 2002 for the murder of 11 prisoners and the torture of others in the camp and extradited from Canada in February 2008.

Like... i will just sit there, silently while they just babble "and where is the proof anyways? the climate has been changing for thousands of years..." or "and this president is expanding government like never before, and..."
to me, that shows extreme insecurity of their views, and that they have to babble and say all their memorized talking points to justify why they feel that way. If it isnt that, i really don't understand how you get into that way of thinking.

GOP senator: Consider neutering Iran's 'ability to wage war'
Halifax, Nova Scotia (CNN) -- A leading Senate Republican voice on defense issues said Saturday the United States should consider neutering Iran's navy and air force if Tehran does not halt its nuclear program.Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, speaking at the Halifax International Security Forum in Canada, told reporters that there will come a point where Iran's nuclear program will reach the state that a conventional limited air strike "won't take them out."
"We're probably even past that point," he said.
"Instead of a surgical strike on their nuclear infrastructure, I think we're to the point now that you have to really neuter the regime's ability to wage war against us and our allies. And that's a different military scenario. It's not a ground invasion but it certainly destroys the ability of the regime to strike back."
The United States believes Iran's nuclear program is aimed at producing nuclear weapons. Iran claims its program is for peaceful purposes.
The senator said that if the United States did attack Iran's navy and air force, Iran could retaliate with unconventional attacks on U.S. forces in Afghanistan and launch terrorist attacks in other parts of the world.
"You can expect that," he said. "You can expect, for a period of time, all hell to break loose. You must have to almost plan for that. And weigh that against the idea of a nuclear-armed Iran and what that means to the future of the world."
Graham told reporters he believes there still is time for economic sanctions to work, but he says the sanctions currently in place are not "crippling."
"If [the Iranians] don't believe we will hit the military, if they believe that's not a possibility, then I think our ability to turn this around is very limited with sanctions."
President Obama should be "bolder," he said, targeting Iran's refined petroleum products, which he said is a key economic vulnerability of the regime.Graham said he wishes Obama "would call in our Russian and Chinese friends and say, 'Listen, we're all in this together. There is no upside to a nuclear-armed Iran. Containment doesn't work. It's a nightmare for all of us. Please help me. If you don't, I'm going to have to go another way' and just let everybody begin to know that the other way is a growing reality.'"
Graham said he does not know when Iran will achieve "redundant" nuclear capability, "but I think it's probably not multiple years."
"This whole debate about how long -- I can't give you a definitive answer," he said, "but I can tell you every day is a day to be used one way or the other. And every day that goes by and we're indifferent, and less decisive, then that's a day lost."
Nuclear talks between Iran and world powers have been stalled since October 1, 2009, when the two sides last met in Geneva, Switzerland.
The European Union has proposed the two sides meet again in mid-November back in Geneva. Manouchehr Mottaki, Iranian foreign minister, has said that November 15 had been suggested for a meeting date.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said Iran is ready to hold talks, but has warned that the Islamic republic won't yield any of its international rights to peaceful nuclear energy development, according to reports by state media.
A Council on Foreign Relations paper published in March said two developments raised suspicions over whether Iran's program is just for peaceful purposes.
It cites the September 2009 "revelation of a second uranium enrichment facility near the holy city of Qom --constructed under the radar of international inspectors," and a U.N. nuclear agency report that "detailed Iran's potential for producing a nuclear weapon, including further fuel enrichment and plans for developing a missile-ready warhead."

Where it Gets Even Weirder:If you're now picturing Japan as a powerful typhoon magnet where you have to carefully slip in durring narrow windows between storms, stop. Storms almost never hit the Hakata Bay, and one of the invasions wasn't even in typhoon season (they tend to hit in the summer, and the first attack was in November).
So exactly how low were the odds of the Mongols getting trashed at Hakata Bay? According to Japanese sources, a typhoon like the one that hit the Mongols during the second invasion occurs "once a hundred years or once a few hundred years." Or, as was the case with Mongolians, every time they invaded Japan.

Someone tried to steal the apt.'s mailbox by unscrewing it from it's wall mount. Took me have the gawt-damn day to find a spot that sold halfway decent security bits and screws. Of course, it couldn't just be simple a thing where I could get both at the same place.
I'll fix the damn thing tomorrow.
Nice of you to do it on behalf of the tenants.

The only time that ever happened to me is when I showed up and hour early for fishing. Caught a lot of tasty trout that day. Mmm.
I worked a fair few retail jobs back in the 20th century and I can think of at least two autumn Sunday mornings when I arrived to open a store only to find a sorry co-worker or two who had been sitting there for an hour for no reason. Sucks to be them.

Wozza, how are the labor/military cuts holding up in public opinion?
not seen a poll - but the opinion is mixed from "absolute cluster bleep" to "best of a bad lot".
Nobody thinks its a good idea.
The idea of retiring the Navy flagship hasn't gone down well, the two new carriers will still be late and next to no functionality.
I'm of the opinion that the entire thing is an epic and monumental failure - but mostly due to our absolute failure to engage in any decent purchasing discipline for the last 3 decades.
The submarine nuclear deterrent trident is still going to be renewed - which is a mistake, as it would have allowed for our surface fleet to be maintained at a decent level and the airforce not to be gutted.

The huge problem is that (aside from Trident) most of the programmes are already comitted too and contracts written prototypes built etc. It's a mess, an absolute epic mess that started under her reign with Eurofighter.
They just will not make the decision that needs to be made - which is ditching trident.
They are cutting across the board regardless of potential down the line savings.
For example - they are cutting the UK film council which takes a few million pounds from government but returns that hundred fold to the economy.
You can expect such cuts from your next GOP congress - if they gain any budgetary power.

Nuh-uh.
Nukes yes - trident no.
We can project more real power with decent aircraft, logistal systems and better serviced infantry with the moeny saved from Trident.
Lots of us over here realise where we are in the world - which is no where near where we used to be, we are not a pretend super power. No threats we face are remotely linked to anything trident is useful for.
The latest defence review provided the basis going forward on top three threats - none of which are confrontation with nuclear power or showdown with any none state actors who will be discouraged by sense of self preservation.

Well it's just after a 11 and it's freezing outside and slushing. The one thing that stinks about winter is that it's hard to get motivated to go outside at this time of night. Usually I just go in my PJs but no more.
Time to get the insulated overalls on...
That sounds plum cold.

Still, why not cut foreign aid instead? Pay for power instead of pouring money down the rathole.

It's pretty normal for here. I shouldn't complain though, this is balmy compared to what it will probably be in a month or so. At least I have snowshoes this year which will make things easier.

Our weather can vary widely.
I can recall New Years at 70 degrees- or, it can be in the 20's.
Mostly, it seems 'hard' winter is an 8 week event. Even then, more than a week at a time at sub freezing temperature is rare.

Klaus Kinski certainly had the role of creepy German guy down to a fine art.
Total freak, but great actor. And his daughter used to be totally hot. Remember Cat People?
Klaus' performance in Aguirre Wrath of God is one of the great all-time depictions of megalomania and the descent into madness. Same with Fitzcarraldo. Both are Werner Herzog films so totally over the top. He was also an incredibly creepy vampire in Nosferatu. In fact I don't think he ever played a "normal" character in his career. Most roles he seemed like a cross between Norman Bates and Col. Kilgore.
He was even in one of the spaghetti westerns with Clint Eastwood.

Dick Cheney doesn't have a pulse.... (Truth is stranger than fiction!)
Cheney's LVAD does not "pump" blood
The pump runs something like a drill bit, continuously rotating at 9,000 rotations per minute rather than squeezing and releasing, so Cheney now officially has no pulse, according to Dr. Stuart D. Russell, chief of heart failure and transplantation at Johns Hopkins’ Comprehensive Transplant Center

But no one ever wrote a tune,

There’s no good news,
They’ll never sing a song of faith. For atheists,

The “he” is always lowercase.
The “he” is always lowercase. Some folks sing a Bach cantata,
Lutherans get Christmas trees,
Atheist songs add up to nada,
But they do have Sundays free.Pentecostalists sing they sing to heaven,
Coptics have the books of scrolls,
Numerologists can count to seven,
Atheists have rock and roll. For Atheists,
There’s no good news,
They’ll never sing a song of Faith. In their songs,
They have a rule,
The “he” is always lowercase.
The “he” is always lowercase.Catholics dress up for Mass,

Charitable foreign aide - probably. Direct British aide is very carefully monitored and is being targetted (outside of the emergency relief portion).
Foreign aide is not just being used to prop up the British Coucil's work abroad with local groups but is being promoted at home as a sign we care about the worlds Muslim population - rather than just wage war agsinst it.

Politicians never like a straightforward debate like that: The party is power generally cannot win them. The party in power puts forward the choices, only to have the party out of power attack them for being "soft on defence" "mean and stingy". etc and insisting them could do better. Most of the time, the voters believe the rhetoric that says they don't have to sacrifice and the party in power suffers in the polls. The real solution is better informed voters, but that's not likely.

Yes, but they didn't a difference. Both Pat Quinn and Mark Kirk won by margins greater than the number of late ballots. The outcome of the election ultimately turned on the 2% of Illinois voters who slit their votes; Those voters did not want the Bill Brady's social conservatism and felt that Alexi Gianoulis was too crooked to trust. I'm not crazy about that outcome, but it did leave both offices won by sane, decent men.

Virtually all trade in the region is highly regulated and controlled.

Sure, it won't happen overnight but it's a worthy goal. In fact it is the standard solution -- i.e. the free market.

Chinese ownership of treasuries is 23 percent of 40 percent of US debt. It's equal to what Japan own but slightly higher. I don't know what the math is off hand but that comes out to be about less than 10 percent. No foreign "country" is going to buy California. Will there be Chinese investors in the private sector? Yes. But everything is severely regulated when it comes to foreign investment. Money is money and it helps keep businesses solvent.

Yes and no. The no part is that we have a strong trade relationship with many ME countries already. Namely SA, UAE, and Kuwait. Many of those countries are considered allies to a limited extent. Overall though I think the point could be summed up to "teach them how to fish." This as opposed to strict foreign aid (USAid). Mind you this holds true for all developing countries especially in Africa which needs more of this "tough love" rather than throwing more money (blindly) to that continent.

Our trade with them is centered around resources and that trade is controlled by a few powerful regimes/families. Whatever trickles down is also tightly controlled. Further, the vast majority of 'real work' is done by outsiders. Our definition of middle class starts and ends with the willingness to work, to do what it takes to create, succeed and then reap the rewards. In the Gulf, middle class is usually defined by consumption only. A society that consumes is very different than a society that creates.
Take away the oil and 'middle class' of Gulf disappears.
Your remarks re Africa are especially noted. Whether we care to admit it or not, our aid has been a disaster for that continent. Just this AM, I put up a post on the failure of aid to to Africa that has resulted in disaster after disaster.
I agree it is a highly complex situation. There are no easy and fast solutions.

Senator Lindsey Graham floats the idea of "neutering Iran's 'ability to wage war'":
Halifax, Nova Scotia (CNN) -- A leading Senate Republican voice on defense issues said Saturday the United States should consider neutering Iran's navy and air force if Tehran does not halt its nuclear program.
Sen.
Thoughts on this idea?

Back in the day, if you were booger eatin' dumb enough to eat lead paint chips regularly, or shove a fork in an outlet, or play catch with lawn darts, you didn't make it to breedin' age.
My brother stuck two wire into an outlet once -- did a loop. I think he asked for my advice. I was about 6 years old. Only thing that happened was a lot of sparks and a close call. He shouldn't have taken my advice.

Senator Lindsey Graham floats the idea of "neutering Iran's 'ability to wage war'":
Thoughts on this idea?
Sure, we'll half-ass the job in Afghanistan so we can send the same soldiers who have already been on 8 tours of duty stumbling into Iran, where we'll utterly alienate the entirety of the urban citizenry who would have been our most powerful weapon against the mullahs if we'd had the slightest idea what we were doing, which we didn't. We thereby encouraged all the disaffected 14-20 year olds to pay attention to the crazy Hamas dude who bitches about Americans all the time, and tells tales about he joys that await martyrs in paradise.

GOP = 3rd War in 10 yrs.
Fools.
What Graham is saying is Iran may be past the point that a surgical strike on its nuclear program could work. If so, then we need another solution. He therefore proposed a plan of attack to eliminate Iran;s ability to project military power. He didn't demand it, he put it forward as a policy proposal to be evaluated. Such a proposal may be incorrect, but proposing it does not make Lindsey graham a fool.

I don't think Senator Graham thinks it would be a walk in the park. He made it pretty clear that Iran would hit back and that a military strike is not his first preference. But he dons view such a strike (and its consequences) as preferable to a nuclear Iran.

re: #563 Gus 802
Might be BMW.
The car division of Rolls Royce is owned by BMW and Bentley is owned by VW.
In 1998, owners Vickers decided to sell Rolls-Royce Motors. The most likely buyer was BMW, who already supplied engines and other components for Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars, but BMW's final offer of £340m was beaten by Volkswagen's £430m.
A stipulation in the ownership documents of Rolls-Royce dictated that Rolls-Royce plc, the aero-engine maker would retain certain essential trademarks (the Rolls-Royce name and logo) if the automotive division was sold. Rolls-Royce plc chose to license not to VW but to BMW, with whom it had recently had joint business ventures. VW had bought rights to the "Spirit of Ecstasy" bonnet (hood) ornament and the shape of the radiator grille, but it lacked rights to the Rolls-Royce name necessary to build the cars. Likewise, BMW lacked rights to the grille and mascot. BMW bought an option on the trademarks, licensing the name and "RR" logo for £40m, a deal that many commentators thought was a bargain for possibly the most valuable property in the deal. VW claimed that it had only really wanted Bentley anyway.
BMW and VW arrived at a solution. From 1998 to 2002 BMW would continue to supply engines for the cars and would allow use of the names, but this would cease on 1 January 2003. From that date, only BMW would be able to name cars "Rolls-Royce", and VW's former Rolls-Royce/Bentley division would build only cars called "Bentley".

Ah, I had it right. In your face! :P
In 1980, Rolls-Royce Motors was acquired by Vickers. In 1998, Vickers plc decided to sell Rolls-Royce Motors. The leading contender seemed to be BMW, who already supplied internal combustion engines and other components for Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars. Their final offer of £340m was outbid by Volkswagen Group, who offered £430m. As part of the deal, Volkswagen Group acquired rights to the "Spirit of Ecstasy" mascot and the shape of the radiator grille.

You were actually mostly right...VW had bought the physical assets of R-R (which included Bentley) from Vickers (along with the rights and designs of the R-R grille and mascot), but BMW licensed the right the the R-R name (for the auto biz) from Rolls-Royce plc (the jet engine maker, who holds the trademarks for the R-R brand).
Pretty simple, huh? /

So, I went to the hardware store today. Well, many actually. But at one stop that didn't have what I was looking for, as I came out the police were beginning to block things off, directing people to leave the parking lot, and so on.
One liquor store I frequent is right there. Doors were closed and lights off. I assumed a robbery. Turns out the 11 o'clock news reports it as being a fake pipe bomb scare, with a "look alike" pipe bomb in the garbage can right in front of said liquor store. Odd.

Yeah, somewhat...R-R bought Bristol Siddeley (part of BAC, predecessor of BAE) in 1966, goes bankrupt in 1971 (because of the problems with their RB211 jet engine for the Lockheed L-1011) and is nationalized, then split up (the car biz went to Vickers and the aerospace/defense biz continued to be nationalized until 1987)

Great. The Colts lose another player for the season. This is really starting to hurt my feelings:
[Link: sports.espn.go.com...]
INDIANAPOLIS -- Colts President Bill Polian is just looking for a few good replacements. It's getting tougher every day.
On Saturday, Indianapolis put former first-round pick Anthony Gonzalez on injured reserve because of a posterior cruciate ligament injury in his left knee, and left five other players, including running backs Joseph Addai and Mike Hart, behind as the team flew to Philadelphia.
The injury list is so long that even Polian has had to revise the team's long-held mantra about injuries. "It's next man up, and right now, we're looking around to see who the next man is," Polian joked as he scouted the Iowa-Indiana game Saturday.

Practice. I've let mine sit for months on occasion over the years. One of my kids is a pro and he says that just to maintain your current level, ya gotta play every day.
But the "What's your favorite?" answer all depends on what you like as well. There are waaay too many choices.

But careful on the size - I read something the other day, I can't find that article now, ibut bigger is NOT necessarily better, if the TV is too big for your space, it won't look as clear. You should take into account the distance you will be from the screen when viewing.

Nope... the size of the keys on the Hammond Organ app are adjustable, and you can scroll the keyboard up or down... or keep it locked on a certain octave... it's really not hard to get use to the size, and you can actually have two octaves available to you if you set the lower and upper keyboard as one continuous scale... sound wise I compared the app to my 3100 dollar Hammond-Suzuki X3 organ (which this app is based on) and it is amazing how close the sound of this thing is to an actual Hammond organ...
And only $2.99.
The Pocket Guitar app is amazing too... I'm not really a guitar player, not more than picking some tunes and basic chording... but you have 4 different effect pedals, 6 different types of guitar, including bass and once again, you can scroll the neck up and down, so in effect, you have all the frets available to you... just like the organ... you have to get use to the size, but as you saw in the video, it's can be done.

Arizona immigration law proposed for Florida would give many whites a free pass
A controversial twist on a controversial Arizona-style immigration law could exempt aliens from Canada and Western European countries from strict new rules.
A draft immigration reform bill, authored by State Rep. William Snyder (R-Stuart) and initially supported by Governor-Elect Rick Scott, aims to establish the legal presence of anyone pulled over in a traffic stop.
However, the bill instructs law enforcement to presume a person is in the United States legally if he/she possesses a Canadian I.D. or passport from a "visa waiver country" - a distinction almost exclusive to Western Europe. South American and Central American countries are not included on the list.

I was working in LA 2002-2003 and was killing time over a weekend. Was walking around Santa Monica and there was a 12 year-old playing his Strat for tips (Parents were there). This kid was really good. Between songs he ripped a little of the Alien Ant Farm version of Smooth Criminal. Funny how you can pick up how to play a song just by watching someone for a few seconds. Sometimes when I have the volume on 11 I'll weave this one in. I always liked a lot of Michael Jackson's music.

Opening salvo of the GOP establishment attempt to undermine Palin and take back control of the party before 2012?
It is hoped.

I think it all depends on Fox. If Fox continues to shill for Palin I don't think the GOP establishment can derail her. They need to work on getting rid of Beck too. He's doing a lot of damage.

Is it just me? Or does Abe look a bit "tarted up"?
I never imagine him that ruddy, but hell, who would know? All those sepia-toned photographs...

re: #49 LRonHoover
yeah, but wouldn't it be better if we all lived in cool looking domes and had pod-furniture?
Eh, I can do without the pod furniture. I just want my jet-pack.

I have an inch long cut on my left middle finger. A cut on right thumb. And my back is killing me. It's hell getting old. And good morning.

We went to the World's Fair in both summers, 1964 and 1965. My grandparents lived in NYC at the time and we would go to visit anyway, so all it cost us was our actual purchases and admission. We saved every quarter we got all year so we could have a good time while there. I still have the guidebook.
This Abraham Lincoln figure was voiced by Royal Dano, an active character actor of the period. It was really wonderful to see, and I did see it a number of times. That whole Fair was magical - the Vatican sent the Pieta, which you went past on a people mover, and at the Belgian pavilion they sold huge Belgian waffles with whipped cream and strawberries for the sum of $1 - it seemed like a lot of money at the time.
