Glenn Beck Suggests Soros Will Set Him Up, Says ‘I’m Not Into Child Pornography’
Is Glenn Beck on final approach to a “Network” style meltdown? While suggesting he will be set up, Beck assures his listeners ‘I’m not into child pornography’.

The thing is, Beck may not be into anything illegal at all. He seems like he gets his jollies just fine by spreading antisemitic, racist, insane shit on the TV whenever he wants.
But I think he has gone too far in this level of antisemitism. This isn’t citing obscure books by white supremacists. He’s now alleging the ADL is corrupt and funded by Soros.
That’s step two in the classic antisemitic attack he’s using: first identify one Jew with smears and lies, then, when other Jews defend him, imply that they’re in on it too. Soon, it’ll be all Jews he’s going after, other than the severe right-wing ones.
I wonder if he’ll have that crazy rabbi who loves the EDL on his show just to prove he’s not an antisemite.

Glenn Beck Says Government Will Stage “False Flag” Terror to Discredit Opposition
In an unprecedented outburst on his Fox News show earlier this week, Glenn Beck identified the threat that we have been warning about for over a year, that the powers behind the Obama administration are preparing to stage a false flag event that will be blamed on its political opposition to derail the movement against big government.
Discussing how the leftists need violence to realize their political agenda, Beck featured a clip that we wrote an article about on Sunday, where former Clintonite and Democrat operative Mark Penn says Obama needs an OKC bombing-style event to regain his popularity.“Remember, President Clinton reconnected through Oklahoma, right?” said Penn on Chris Matthews’ Hardball show on Thursday. “And the president right now seems removed. It wasn’t until that speech [after the bombing] that [Clinton] really clicked with the American public. Obama needs a similar” defining moment, according to Penn.

6 Lunatics Inspired by Fox News and Glenn Beck
Charles Wilson: Sentenced to prison last week for repeatedly threatening to kill Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). His cousin, in a letter to the court, said: “While his actions were undeniably wrong and his choices were terrible, in part they were the actions of others played out by a very gullible Charlie. He was under the spell that Glenn Beck cast, aided by the turbulent times in our economy. I don’t believe that Charlie even had the ability to actually carry out his threats.”
Byron Williams: Arrested while driving to the HQ of the liberal non-profit group The Tides Foundation carrying numerous guns and body armor, intent on killing everyone in the office, before moving on to do the same thing at the ACLU. Williams confessed he views Beck as a “schoolteacher” who “blew my mind.” The would-be killer admitted that Beck “give[s] you every ounce of evidence you could possibly need” to commit violence. He awaits trial in jail.
Jim David Adkisson: Killed two people and wounded six others in a shooting attack at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in West Knoxville, Tenn., in 2008. Adkisson was inspired by Fox commentator Bernard Goldberg: “This was a symbolic killing,” Adkisson wrote. “Who I wanted to kill was every Democrat in the Senate and House, the 100 people in Bernard Goldberg’s book. I’d like to kill everyone in the mainstream media. But I knew these people were inaccessible to me.” Goldberg is the author of 110 People Who Are Screwing Up America (and Al Franken Is #37). UPDATE: See Bernard Goldberg’s response below.
Richard Poplawski: Charged with killing three Pittsburgh police officers who responded to a 911 call about a family dispute at his mother’s Stanton Heights home in April 2009. Polawski “loved Glenn Beck,” according to his mom.
James W. Von Brunn: Fox itself was reportedly in danger from white supremacist Von Brunn who was arrested after opening fire at security guards, killing one, at the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. One of his targets was apparently a “Fox News location.” One of Von Brunn’s pet issues was President Obama’s birth certificate, a “debate” that got plenty of air on Fox.
Greg Lee Giusti: Arrested for threatening House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, whom Beck himself has said he would like to poison. Giusti’s mom said: “Greg frequently gets in with a group of people that have really radical ideas and that are not consistent with myself or the rest of the family, which gets him into problems … I say Fox News, or all of those that are really radical, and he, that’s where he comes from.”

Odd isn’t it? Glenn Beck has spent the better part of the last two years trying to destroy people’s careers through lies, innuendo, conspiracy theories, and hysteria. Now he’s worried about being “destroyed”? Frankly, the only people that spread false rumors of “child porn” are morally bankrupt wingnut bloggers.
Either he is so paranoid, due to his own smearing tactics, that this is going to come back on him, or he is in a pre-emptive mode for damage control for something.
With Beck it’s hard to say which one.

d’ya know, in the 1980s people like me were very concerned about how the reagan budgets were blowing out the deficit to record levels. in fact, one very tangible result of the 1980s budgets was that the percentage of the federal budget that needed to be devoted to debt service rose from its usual range of about 5 - 6% to about 10% for a couple of years around, IIRC, 1990 - 1992. however, it didn’t have much influence on inflation, which is conditioned more by a hot economy where goods are highly sought after and prices can rise as a result
as for “printing money” - the stock market “prints” much more imaginary money - that can disappear by the billions in the course of a bad afternoon - than the federal reserve can even manage

re: #77 Charles
They’ve obviously purchased ads for the “Glenn Beck” keyword.
Here’s the galling thing. All the while Beck’s been pushing gold, all the while he’s been saying that gold may well go up in price,…
it’s actually gone up.
Now is not the best time to make his assertion, that gold is slated to rise, the centerpiece of the case against him.
A man may be quite an ass, yet good at some things. Bobby Fischer comes to mind. It’s just possible that gold really will reach stratospheric prices, and that Beck is a better chess player at the game of gold prices than you or I.
If I want to get after Fischer for his anti-semitic rants, (well, he’s dead, but anyhow) I don’t kibitz his chess and predict, mid-game, that he’s going to lose.
Gold prices aren’t like chess and Beck doesn’t have, no one will ever have, a track record of thousands of years, to be the counterpart of a track record of thousands of games, to where we can know just how good he really is at this game. But it’s possible that he’s as good at gold speculation as Soros is at currency speculation. For instance.

Well, the main reason for any country abandoning the gold standard is usually to allow the printing of money in response to changing financial situations. This can in some cases be a bad thing (inflation) but in other cases it is a good thing (avoiding deflation).
Paul Krugman’s story about the Washington babysitting club is a neat explanation of how printing money is sometimes a good way of getting an economy moving (a very brief summary is that members of the babysitting club would babysit each others’ kids in exchange for tokens that could then be redeemed for reciprocal sitting services within the club, but it turned out that people were hoarding the tokens and so no-one was able to go out, hence they printed some extra tokens to prevent the hoarding).
As always, there is no one right answer though.

Not in the literal sense.
And even if I were being literal, I do maintain I am somewhat qualified to make that observation from afar.
142 | engineer cat Fri, Nov 12, 2010 12:08:14pm |
the economics of inflation and deflation are interesting to consider
our credit heavy economy is based on a universe of continuous moderate inflation. this encourages borrowing since the dollars you pay back with should be worth less than the dollars that you borrow
this is because most debt contracts are based on a fixed rate of debt and payments. in an inflationary universe, all fixed debt service payments will become effectively cheaper over time
now, consider a hyperinflationary universe: let’s say all prices go up by a factor of ten. historically, when this happens, wages have to catch up, since if nobody can afford to buy anything, capitalists can’t make any money. so, pretty soon my salary goes up by a factor of ten as well. but my mortgage contract is at a fixed rate! yow, my mortgage is so cheap now! my bank isn’t concerned, because now i owe even less relative to the new value of my house. of course, my savings aren’t worth much anymore
now consider a deflationary universe: the dollar is worth more and more. however, compared to the world economy, probably not, since when the u.s. sneezes, the rest of the world catches cold. but, my mortgage becomes more and more expensive. hey! WTF??? the assessed value of my house might even go down and i might end up underwater!!! then the bank might get nervous and want me to pay off. but wait! on the other hand, my savings become more and more valuable without me doing a thing.

Beck’s obsession with Soros has taken on a life of it’s own.
Except that that’s not what ‘alter-ego’ means, in any way. You can’t use alter-ego to describe someone’s obsession with another real human being. An alter-ego is a severe personality change for one individual, so severe that it functions as another personality.
You’re just using the term completely wrong, if that’s what you meant.
However, that explanation doesn’t actually jibe with your first use of it:
Call me a cynic but everything he does is very calculated.
Not unlike his alter ego, George Soros. Where one goes, the other can’t be far behind.
You were saying his alter-ego, George Soros, was also very calculated.
And when asked to explain, you said:
You missed my point. Beck’s response was calculated, in my opinion. The Soros interview was equally calculated.
That Beck assigned a premium value to Soros drivel is a deliberate misrepresentation on his part.
Where you were talking about Soros’s actual interview, and the actual, real human being Soros.
If you did simply mean that Beck has a distorted view of Soros, you chose the worst possible way of expressing that, since what you said was that Soros was Beck’s alter-ego— meaning that Soros and Beck were the same person, expressing different personalities.

Wow, you people really don’t get it do you? So you can attack the messenger all you want but what part of what he’s saying can you refute? Those of you tossing out the most vile and vitriol against this man please tell me what facts you have to repudiate his arguments or assassinate his character.
There’s one that is certain, and easy to follow using a very simple metric:
Birchers suck. People who promote the Birchers and their crazy conspiracy theories suck. Glenn Beck promotes the Birchers and their conspiracy theories. Ipso facto, Glenn Beck sucks.

i wonder what effect beck’s vendetta against soros is supposed to have beyond keeping his ratings up?
Distract people from the actual evil billionaires who are giving them the shaft:
To put it in the simplest terms possible, the Koch brothers promote AGW denial and continued oil dependence while Soros doesn’t. That, by default, makes Soros morally superior.

re: #138 iossarian
So, in layman’s terms, the gold standard doesn’t have the flexibility that other standards have? Gonna try to read up a bit on it, but I don’t think I can understand a lot of it, but I’ll try.
So, why does Beck and Co. try to pawn off gold? (Or maybe I missed it).

I’d need to find the link again, and don’t have a lot of time now (but you could probably find it fairly easily in your research).
You’re on track when you say the gold standard doesn’t have the flexibility of other standards, in that gold is a finite resource. That is, we know how much gold is in circulation and reserves, and how much has been identified in mines, but not yet mined. The article I wish I could find noted that the total value in dollars of all the gold identified came to about 1/3 of the U.S. GDP for the year the article was written (maybe two or three years ago?). The point was that the U.S. GDP alone would need to be constricted by 2/3’s if we shifted to the gold standard. Economic nightmare.
As to why Beck et. al. are pushing gold right now - when folks get nervous they tend to look for “safe” investments, and believe gold to be one of those. Greater demand, higher prices - good for sellers. But, a number of economists are beginning to worry that gold could be the next bubble. That is, a bunch of folks buying in at the top and then watching gold prices implode.
(Caveat: I’m not an economist, nor am I an expert on any of this - just remembering as best I can the articles I read. If I get some time, I’ll try to find them for ya.)

it’s a way for gold dealers to pump the value of their product and make money off of the bubble
a lot of hustlers are out there predicting massive inflation in the next six months (of course, this six month period moves along from year to year), and most of them just happen to have the website of a company that sells gold - a safe investment for hyperinflationary times! -right at hand for your convenience

re: #132 commadore183
A question or two:
1) What the hell is the right-wing’s fasination with gold? From my foggy as hell memory, I know that the US currency was based on the gold standard (I think), but switched to silver.2) Why did we drop the gold standard?
Thanks for help for this history-ignorant lizard :)
We didn’t switch to silver. We switched from gold to fiat during the civil war, back to gold after the civil war [not instantly, but we got there], and then to fiat, de facto during Roosevelt’s first term, de jure, during Nixon’s term.
In 1933, the government demanded, and with the force of law behind it, received, essentially all privately held gold held as wealth, buying the gold at a price it named, of around $20 per ounce.
Gold for jewelry, a small amount of gold coin, and gold held by dentists etc. for use in a trade or profession, was exempt.
Once gold coins were no longer “money”, but “contraband”, the U.S. was for practical purposes not on a gold standard. We maintained the fiction that we were for quite some time afterward, dropping it decades later. In the interim, the official price of gold was $35 per ounce, but the U.S. was unwilling and unable to honor all requests for one ounce of gold in exchange for $35 of paper.
We went off the gold standard, de jure as well as de facto, in 1971. In 1974, it was again made legal to hold gold for wealth purposes. Why gold bugs think the government will not again demand such gold, on pain of prison, be sold at a price the government names, beats me. There is, after all, precedent.
For a time, some U.S. money was backed by silver. Silver certificates circulated as late as the 1960s. Mostly $1 and $5 bills, they carried the promise that the government would exchange any bill for 1 dollar in silver (5 dollars in silver). Everyone understood that this meant one silver dollar, of thus and so a purity and mass. But the promise was welshed on, when inflation carried the value of the dollar too low to justify such an exchange. Instead, the government changed the meaning of its pledge to a meaningless meaning: it would give you an amount of silver equivalent, at market prices, to the number of silver certificates you brought it. This silliness ended by and by. Today’s dollar is a fiat dollar. Its only value is its utility as a means of exchange, and its reputation. A reputation is earned by a history of the issuing government being slow to issue more, and then, only because the supply of real goods and services has increased in like measure.
This reputation is in danger nowadays, both because of the Carter era inflation, and now, because of several moves by the Fed issuing more dollars. Hence, the runup in the price of gold.
The right wing sees gold as a means by which the bourgeoisie can secure its wealth against confiscation through inflation. The hope is chimerical; if the government wants to water down the value of the dollar, everyone holding dollars will be left holding waste paper, but everyone in the U.S. who holds gold will* be told to exchange it for that waste paper.
*If history repeats itself.

Martin Wolf has an excellent post on the whether the world could go back to a gold standard that you might find interesting. He discusses, amongst other things, a mismatch similar to the one mentioned by subsailor68 in #183 below.
The biggest transition problem is the mismatch between the value of official gold holdings and the size of the monetary system. The value of gold held by central banks is apparently about $1,300bn, while global deposits of the banking system were about $61,000bn in 2008, according to the McKinsey Global Institute. To survive the slightest financial panic, the ratio of gold to bank money would need to be perhaps an order of magnitude higher.

re: #135 Obdicut
That bears no resemblance to chess.
Drooling morons down the street who have been sniffing after Ron Paul’s newsletter for decades are also convinced that gold will rise forever.
Are they also all Bobby Fischers?
First gold has to not rise like that. Here you have a man who’s told people buy gold, and you didn’t and I didn’t and some of them did, and we didn’t get rich and some of them did. And they’re the fools? Maybe in many ways, yes they are. But I’m not about to insist that I know more about gold than they do when they’re winning and I’m standing on the sidelines shaking my head. Perhaps I don’t know everything about everything and there’s reasons I haven’t understood why gold will go up up up.
If you know better, you will get rich handily. You will short gold and make a killing. Why argue? Just short it.
Or talk about something else, like how Beck is putting together a really nasty, stomach-churningly sicko anti-semitic tirade-a-thon.
It’s galling but bearable if he makes a killing in gold. This other cannot go unopposed.

And Beck will claim he’s being railroaded, no matter how ironclad the evidence against him is. And his “Beck Zombies” are stupid enough to believe it.
After all they’ve believed all his other BS.
