I'm biased so I can't be sure but I'm thinking the interview made Pres Obama look like an intelligent adult and O'Reilly like a rude, frustrated bully.

Indeed. In fact, hearing the interviewee's point of view isn't O'Reilly's goal to begin with. All he's interested in is (1) promoting his own extremist viewpoint and, (2) hearing himself speak so he can tell himself what a brilliant guy he is.
That's why he doesn't listen to the answers to is questions and just interrupts (or calls someone a pinhead and/or shouts to have their mic cut off when they don't allow him to interrupt them).
It'll be fun to see the resident O'Reilly apologists try to spin their way through this one.

For those keeping count, the interview was 14:17 long. That mean Mr. O'Reilly interrupted the president, on average, every 17.8 seconds.
14 | Varek Raith Wed, Feb 9, 2011 1:06:27pm |
Can you imagine the outrage if a lefty interviewer interrupted Pres. Bush every 17 seconds???
;)
15 | Talking Point Detective Wed, Feb 9, 2011 1:06:57pm |
I'll never forget when O'Reilly was first getting started and I had someone from Spain visiting. He couldn't get enough of watching O'Reilly. He'd never seen anything like it - a loud, abusive, blowhard extremist venting anger on national TV. Needless to say, it didn't exactly make me feel proud to be American.
The sad thing is that it's now typical rather than a novelty - and certainly O'Reilly deserves all the credit in the world for helping to make that type of useless political analysis/discourse the norm.

In the interviews with the likes of Michelle Bachmann, they get annoyed when the interviewer interrupts them repeatedly to ask them to simply answer the question they were just asked and not ramble off some boiler-plate platitudinous talking point

Yeah, I'm going off topic early here, but this is really icky behavior:
If Republicans can't make it constitutional to ban same sex marriages in Iowa, give people the right to treat them like second class citizens. (Jim Crow v2.0 anyone?)
It would be legal for an Iowa business owner who cites religious beliefs to refuse to provide jobs, housing, goods or services to people involved in a marriage that violates his or her religious convictions, according to a bill an Iowa House subcommittee will consider on Wednesday.
House Study Bill 50, called the Religious Conscience Protection Act, would allow a person, business or organization such as a charity or fraternal group to deny services without fear of facing a civil claim or lawsuit if they think doing so would validate or recognize same-sex relationships.
Now mind you the bill doesn't explicitly mention Same Sex Relationships or Marriages, though it's the intent according to the writers, now mind you, this could open the door to all sorts of mischief. Effectively it gives any religion that practices any sort of hate or discrimination free reign. And, it's Iowa, which is about 3 million last census, of which 60K is Black, 9000 American Indian, and 80K Hispanic and Latino. The Jewish community has about 6,400 members and Muslims numbered about 4,700, so as you can see, it's about as homogeneous a group as you're going to find.
So in other words, if you're a same sex couple and get homeless, don't expect help. If you're a same sex couple of and get stranded on the side of the road, it'll be perfectly ok for the tow truck to leave you there. It'll also be perfectly ok for Ambulances to not take you to the hospital, or have a hospital refuse service to you if you have a heart attack. Sure, they're extreme cases, but that's what they're giving clearance to with this bill.
Stay classy Republicans.

He'll get the right end of something now and then. He was supportive of the lesbian moms whose kid got kicked out of a Catholic pre-school, when everyone else on the right was running around wailing about how they planned this, just to make the Church look bad.
And I don't see him do a lot of backpedaling to match up with the other pundits, if he wanders off the reservation.

This was actually O'Reilly on his best behavior when it comes to interviewing a dem :P. I'm guessing he intentionally took it down several notches (as compared to his more combative 2008 interview with then candidate Obama) because it was a super bowl audience instead of his normal FNC audience and he was interviewing the President in the White House.
Just be glad it didn't go something like this :P:

Hannity's just an asshole. I can name one time he's impressed me and that's when he called out one of Fred Phelps' children for what they were doing. Then again, one of my first introductions to Glenn Beck was him praising Irena Sendler, the Polish woman who saved a lot of Jewish children but this was before his chalkboard :). O'Reilly as you've pointed out goes off the reservation more. My problem with Bill O isn't so much ideology but how he acts. He acts like a complete dick.

oh, they'd just organize a boycott, and there'd be tons of anonymous threatening letters, the place would get burgled and vandalized and maybe torched. Then finally the owners would leave and people would wring their hands go 'tut tut, it's a shame, but they should have known better, they got what was coming to them' and then go on with their lives while ignoring the broken lives and dreams of the people they just ran out of town.

Interviewing does not mean what it once did.
Once, the skills of a good interviewer were to ask questions that elicited responses that revealed something, something either interesting or deeper than could be gotten from a speech. Another key skill was to ask followup questions that derived from the responses to earlier questions. This of course lead on occasion to interviewers asking leading questions, and that was how a poor interviewer showed his bias.
Now, interviews a la FOX style are not about inquiring into the interviewee. They're about what everything else on FOX is about - presenting a narrative. As a result, what the interviewee says does not really matter, hence the repeated interruptions. The most repulsive tactic, however, is the editorial disclaimer at the end of every question - it happens several times in the interview. Eg.,
"... and that's why I..."
"Yes, yes, we've heard it every day, and that's why they say you're a big government liberal who intrudes into every aspect of everyday life. Moving on to the next question..."
This isn't an interview. It's a monologue with the President as a prop. And since the entirety of the FOX narrative is based on a make-believe evil antagonist that they have given the same name as the President of the US, the prop in this case is entirely in keeping with their model.

Breitbart Defends Posting The Rants Of 9-11 Truther Michael Moriarty (video)
Heh.
Moriarty and Breitbart see a Hollywood conspiracy to blacklist conservatives. While Hollywood on balance is well to the left, this alleged conspiracy hasn't exactly destroyed the careers of right-leaning actors like Kelsey Grammer, Sly Stallone, Michael Douglas, Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, Clint Eastwood, Angie Harmon, or even Mel Gibson. In other words, Breitbart is once again full of shit.

OT on the issue of choice: Ta-Nehisi has a great post today on why he's pro-choice:
This is the era of internet intellectuals, mostly dudes, who excel at analogizing easily accessible facts to buttress their points. It's a good skill to have, and one I employ myself. But it isn't wisdom. Like most people, I have deep problems with the termination of life--and that is what I believe abortion to be. Still a decade ago, I learned that those problems were abstract, and could not stand against something as tangible and imposing as death.
My embrace of a pro-choice stance is not built on analogizing Rick Santorum with Hitler. It is not built on what the pro-life movement is "like." It's built on set of disturbing and inelidable truths: My son is the joy of my life. But the work of ushering him into this world nearly killed his mother. The literalism of that last point can not be escaped.
Every day women choose to do the hard labor of a difficult pregnancy. Its courageous work, which inspires in me a degree of admiration exceeded only by my horror at the notion of the state turning that courage, that hard labor, into a mandate. Women die performing that labor in smaller numbers as we advance, but they die all the same. Men do not. That is a privilege.

Thats a disgusting assertion about Malcolm X too, who's assassination was at least egged on by the US government. If there is one thing we know from the COINTELPRO spying on Malcolm X, it was that he was faithful to his wife.

Agreed. Now Obama, as with every other president, like to filibuster to maintain control and direction, and I can see O'Reilly's point of view to an extent. However, this was not CANIDATE Obama in 2008 (where O'Reilly never gave Obama more than two seconds to speak), this is PRESIDENT Obama in 2011, and he deserves a No Interruption Zone (to paraphrase O'Reilly's shtick).

I think it's acceptable for an interviewer to break in or try to divert an interviewee, no matter who they are--this is, after all, their craft. People want to see the interview, not just Obama chatting away.

He said, "OK. May I have a cheeseburger and a glass of white wine before then?"
They brought him a cheeseburger.

There's also Dennis Miller who went way far right post-9/11. And he's got a new comedy special on HBO. So this blacklist, if it exists, is pretty much a failure.
I'm surprised he has a show, never found him the least bit funny.
I met Dennis Miller last Easter at a Pacer Game..

It's full-metal-jacket theocracy time in this country now. From Kentucky (home of the Creation Museum):
KY Senate Considers Biblical Studies for Public Schools
The Kentucky state legislature is currently considering legislation that would add religion classes to the public school curriculum. On Tuesday, the state Senate Education Committee approved Senate Bill 56, which allows public schools to teach Bible courses as electives. It currently awaits approval in the House.
So what? - you might ask, pointing out that comparative religion classes are not uncommon.
Oh, but it is not about comparing or studying world religions - it's only about one.
The summary of the bill:
Create a new section of KRS Chapter 156 to require the Kentucky Board of Education to promulgate administrative regulations to establish an elective social studies course on the Hebrew Scriptures, Old Testament of the Bible, the New Testament, or a combination of the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament of the Bible; require that the course provide students knowledge of biblical content, characters, poetry, and narratives that are prerequisites to understanding contemporary society and culture, including literature, art, music, mores, oratory, and public policy; permit students to use various translations of the Bible for the course; amend KRS 158.197 to permit a school council to offer an elective social studies course on the Hebrew Scriptures, Old Testament of the Bible, the New Testament, or a combination of the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament of the Bible.
Furthermore, from the text of the bill:
A course offered under this section shall follow applicable law and all federal and state guidelines in maintaining religious neutrality and accommodating the diverse religious views, traditions, and perspectives of students in the school. A course under this section shall not endorse, favor, or promote, or disfavor or show hostility toward, any particular religion or nonreligious faith or religious perspective. A school-based decision making council, in complying with this section, shall not violate any provision of the United States Constitution or federal law, the Kentucky Constitution or any state law, or any administrative regulations of the United States Department of Education or the Kentucky Department of Education.
That's the "get out" clause, so the supporters can say they are not establishing a religion. But, if the subject matter is only the NT and OT the defacto choice of religion has been made!
but...
(continued)
173 | freetoken Wed, Feb 9, 2011 2:37:05pm |
(cont)
The proposed law then says:
Any school council organized pursuant to KRS 160.345 or, if none exists, the principal[school's governing body], may authorize the display of historic artifacts, monuments, symbols, and texts, including but not limited to religious materials, in conjunction with a course of study that includes an elective course in history, civilization, ethics, comparative religion, literature, or other subject area that uses such artifacts, monuments, symbols, and texts as instructional material if the display is:
(a)[(1)] Appropriate to the overall educational purpose of the course; and
(b)[(2)] Consistent with the requirements of KRS 42.705.
Emphasis added by me.
This bill is about getting the display of the 10 commandments, crosses, etc. into the school. Since the only religion being studied is Christianity, the majority of the displays will be likewise.
The KY Senate tried this last year but the KY House turned it down. This year? Who knows, but with the theocrats steering the revanchists (Tea Partiers) it could work out differently.

The Patriot Act bill would have renewed the authority for court-approved roving wiretaps that permit surveillance on multiple phones. Also addressed was Section 215, the so-called library records provision, which gives the FBI court-approved access to "any tangible thing" relevant to a terrorism investigation.
The third deals with the "lone-wolf" provision of a 2004 anti-terror law that permits secret intelligence surveillance of non-U.S. people not known to be affiliated with a specific terror organization.
and how many times have wingnuts told me that i'm a paranoid america-hater for insisting that the last two provisions actually exist and are not a fig newton of my communist imagination?

One of the most uncomfortable, but also strangely enjoyable moments watching an interview came on a Sunday Morning program where they were interviewing Patrick O'Brien at his home in France. The interviewer started to ask a question before O'Brien had _completely_ answered the previous one. "Now, you mustn't do that," an obviously irritated O'Brien told him. Apparently, O'Brien just detested the whole idea of interviews. He thought that gentlemen just really didn't sit around having one person ask a series of questions of another, but that men should have conversations, instead. A little eccentric, but I'll admit, I really kind of liked him for it, in spite of the fact that there are many others who would come off as real jackasses if they chided an interviewer like that.

I do recall from early press conferences that President Obama is perfectly comfortable talking for 10 - 15 minutes in response to one question. I would think that some respectful interruption may be a good idea in an interview setting.

Peak Oil!
? I'm not sure if you are making light of the fact that oil is a nonrenewable resource. Sure, there is a lot of collapse-catastrophe-obsessed people who like to obsess over peak oil, but it doesn't change the fact that we will eventually have to transition from an oil-based infrastructure.

It was responding to the POTUS rephrasing the question in words more to his own taste.
Can't blame him for trying, but O'Reilly ( whom I have no love for) was having none of it.
Sorry, I had to log off for a bit, but wanted to respond.
The way it went, O'Reilly asked him what he thought of people who hated him. Firstly, he was telling Obama he hated him. He put emphasis on the word because there are many ways to phrase such a question IF the question should be asked at all, which it shouldn't. What president in this country was never hated by anyone from Washington on?
At any rate, Obama let it go (as he was doing to a lot of what O'Reilly said) and tried to get to the meat of the question by saying that people who dislike him don't know him and how can you hate someone you don't know. He was trying to express the idea that it's his policies they don't like, not him personally because they don't know him. Which is another reason the question is just stupid.
Obama tried to be the bigger person, but O'Reilly really meant to drive that word home. Why? His mama didn't raise him right.

And here was some of last antics...
POLITICS: Lee, Buerkle support funding restrictions for abortions
Upstate Representatives Chris Lee and Ann Marie Buerkle are among the House Republicans co-sponsoring a controversial bill that would permanently restrict federal funding for abortions. They're the only members of the local House delegation to sign on to the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act...
New York Rep. Chris Lee resigns from the House
Rep. Chris Lee (R-N.Y.) resigned from the House Wednesday evening effective immediately, an announcement that came just hours after a Web site reported that the married congressman had sent a shirtless image of himself to a woman he met on Craigslist.
"I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents," Lee said in a statement announcing his resignation. "I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. I have made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their forgiveness."
Lee's decision to vacate his Upstate New York seat came after Gawker, a gossip Web site, posted the shirtless image and what it said was correspondence between him and a 34-year-old woman...
One has to wonder what Rep. Lee would have done if he got this woman he was planning on committing adultery with pregnant? An abortions perhaps?
So, the GOP already lost a house member because of a sex scandal.

You'd have to hope so. I honestly don't know. The Conservative cult media narrative has so poisoned public knowledge I can't really tell.
Sure, we know that members of the cult sitting at home heard "I'm a Muslim and my religion influences my presidency so much that I want to destroy this nation and kill every one of you personally." But they will hear that no matter what he says.
As for the rest of the nation, I can't tell. I can't remember the last person I talked to who didn't believe at least one completely false cultie talking point. Many had much more realistic views on most issues, but there was always at least one talking point that had wormed its way in. In a way it's similar to how the gun issue has been decided - repeat the words 'freedom' and 'rights' enough, and the issue is won; decades of repetition and America has decided essentially unanimously that thousands of unnecessary deaths of men, women and children every year is an acceptable price to pay so a tiny minority of people can cuddle their guns to sleep.
It really is a little frightening how easily a repeated talking point or two that echoes in an all-powerful media can change the course of the most powerful nation on earth. I fear that the influence of the Conservative cult media goes far beyond the tiny minority of cultists that they own.

That may be so, but my point is that I don't really know how much the FOX narrative has poisoned public perception. That is, I don't really know how many people think it's totally okay to disrespect that guy in the White House, because he wanted to ram healthcare down our throats or somesuch.
