You know I like college ball but I can't get in to the NBA. Maybe it's because the local team (Wizards) suck but I don't know. Still my favorite sport to play though.

Norton anti-virus stinks. I've been having progressively worse computer troubles for months. Root Directory damage, windows crashes, etc. Norton scans turned up nothing. Last night I ran an Ad Aware scan (free version). It found malware within 5 minutes. After a quick reboot all problems solved.

I've never gotten into basketball. It's just not my thing. I think it's because it moves so damn quickly and I can never follow what's going on. I went to an NBA game once and sat there going "WTF?" every time the whistle blew for this foul or that one because I didn't even see what had happened.
Give me soccer any day. I can follow that. Or UFC fights, because those can be entertaining. Basketball's just not for me.

I grew into the NBA during the Lakers/Celtics Magic/Larry era. I chose the Celtics. "East Coast Y'all" and all that.
Wasn't nuts about Kareem either. If Airplane! would have come out earlier? Probably would be a different story.

Yeah, I've heard that about Ireland too. Water looked so inviting. I'm jealous that he can go to the beach daily while the closest beach to me is a 3 1/2 hour drive. Nothing better than the ocean especially in the warmer months.

Is Pakistan's spy chief the first to bolt?
Pakistan's chief spook missing in inaction
The head of Pakistan's spy agency that the United States has informally declared as a terrorist outfit is missing amid calls for his resignation over the Osama bin laden episode.Ahmed Shuja Pasha, Director General of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), was reported to have left Pakistan for the United States on "summons" from Washington, but US officials have declined to confirm his arrival or presence here. Some sources indicated Pasha, fearing humiliation or worse, may be meeting with US interlocutors on "neutral" territory in the Gulf or Saudi Arabia.
No news reports of his meetings with US officials. "Or Worse" makes me think he fears he might be arrested. If he really thinks that I doubt he would show up for a meeting with the US anywhere.

I have a degree of skepticism about the Pakistani govt and intel services, but I'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. How long did it take us to catch on to Aldrich Ames? How long did it take the Brits to find out about Kim Philby? MSE is not included in any version of Windows, due in part to the potential antitrust headaches that'd cause for MS, no doubt. MSE does supplement/upgrade Windows Defender, which is included in Windows from XP SP2 on up, and puts WD and the AV component in one program to manage it all.

Now, I can't get in to soccer or hockey as of lot people here in the Northern Virginia area have with the emergence of the Caps the past few years.
Heh. Hockey doesn't interest me either, unless I'm watching highlight reels of some fight during a match. Soccer, OTOH, is something I grew up watching and loving, so that goes back a long way for me.
You brought up UFC though, I enjoy boxing a bit perhaps the most of any individual sport. Baseball was and remains my first love to watch but I enjoy pickup b-ball a lot.
See, I got jaded on boxing just because of Don King and all the blatant corruption and bullshit that followed him around. Even now I can't watch boxing anymore.
UFC, OTOH, is freaking awesome. I love it. There's something primal about watching two guys beating the crap out of each other without all the formality of boxing. I'm already making plans to get tickets the next time some sort of MMA event comes to Austin.
Baseball is only fun if I'm actually at the game with friends drinking overpriced beer or smuggling in a flask of booze to pour into my overpriced soda. I used to live right by the Astrodome back when the Astros still played there and the games were dirt cheap. My friends would come to my house and we'd walk to the stadium. We'd get the cheap seats out in center field for something like $5, take booze in our purses, and hang out watching the game. Then we'd stagger back to my place and they'd sleep over so no one had to drive.
I miss those days. It was fun. I haven't been to a baseball game in years. =/

If you want/need that level of control and tech support, then use a paid software suite (IMO, McAfee's corporate client is better than their consumer one by a longshot, Norton's has improved a lot and dropped a lot of bloat, but for the money, NOD32 trumps them both [and most other paid AVs]).
I'm just saying (and I'm not the only geek saying it) that, for most people, paid AV is an unnecessary cost at $25-30+ bucks a year when MSE can do a more than serviceable job in protecting and cleaning most people's systems. MSE may be relatively basic compared to most paid AVs, but for free, it's good enough.

Gotcha. Yeah, I want that higher set of controls like locking up the registry. "Access protection" on their menu. And my IT skills are moderate, so I like having someone to call to backstop my settings on the work computers. Let's say there are computer experts or victims that work IT. I call myself a computer victim. Everything I learned was on the run at work. Computer experts OTOH have real training. I'm the drafted goto IT guy work. I want setting that save trouble when somebody does mistakenly click on the wrong email or URL.

Al-Qaida Threatened Nuke Strike if bin Laden Killed
"A senior al-Qaida commander claimed that the terrorist group has hidden a nuclear bomb somewhere in Europe which will be detonated if Osama bin Laden is ever caught or assassinated," the newspaper reported.
The claim came to light in classified files released by the WikiLeaks website, according to AFP.
Yes, because we know if AQ had access to a nuke, they would sit on it for years.

Check your extensions to see if you're running something that's causing problems if it's not configured correctly (such as NoScript or AdBlock Plus)...if it's not that, uninstall FF4, clear temp files and cache, and reinstall FF4.

Agreed. I grew up under the philosophy that there's no shame in seeking help, a shoulder to lean on, so long as you don't make a living out of it. That folks who play by the rules and do all the right things may still need help to make it through hard times.
Hence why I'm absolutely disgusted by the ideology that's taken root in the GOP in recent years that relying on government help of any kind, even for brief instances, is a "failure" on one's part. As well as the hypocrisy that highlights professions, such as farming, as being those of "Real Americans," when many in those professions rely upon the government in one way or another for their livelihoods.

Though, to be honest, I never really like those kinds of political tests. "Either/Or" political tests always seem to put things in one extreme or another per answer, leaving you feeling uncomfortable with your choices. Question 12 in particular irked me, because I could see it both ways.
I agree...that Pew test has me as a Solid Liberal, though I feel more moderate than that.
235 | HappyBenghazi Sun, May 8, 2011 3:02:54pm |
I took that Pew test since it was on one of my friend's facebook pages. I didn't like it. Too much either or for me. And frankly I don't see how one's personal financial situation has to do with ideology. Plenty of prosperous liberals and broke conservatives. I did score strong liberal though which wasn't surprising. On political compass, I'm usually negative 3 to 5 or so on social libertarian and -1 through 1 on economics.

STrong Liberals
* Highly politically engaged
* 75% are Democrats
* Concentrated in the Northeast and West
* 57% are female
* Best educated of the groups: 49% hold at least a bachelor's degree and 27% have post-graduate experience
* A third regularly listen to NPR, about two-in-ten regularly watch The Daily Show and read The New York Times
* 59% have a passport
* 42% regularly buy organic foods
* 21% are first or second generation Americans
- I'm relatively politically engaged. Part of my campus' College Dems but not a government major or someone who has a desire to work in politics. So, the only thing that makes me a strong liberal is that yes I am a Democrat, I'm currently 12 creds short of a BA, and I have a passport. I sometimes listen to NPR, read the NYT, and watch the DAily Show not regularly.

I think my grandmother who would be 100 next year would be amazed at how nasty the political discourse has gotten. My grandfather was a public servant. Started out in the NLRB almost at its start until he was forced out in the Nixon years and was in private practice until his death in the late 70's. I think about her a lot really and my grandfather even if I never knew him. It may sound cheesy but one of the things I would love to hear most in my life would be his voice. I've been trying to dream about him to no avail. I am biased but I really think that my dad's parents had one of the most beautiful romances I've ever heard of. Consumer Reports reviews are helpful on durable goods, like appliances and cars, but I don't trust them on anything related to computers, especially software of any kind. Frankly, I don't have confidence that their writers and testers have the know-how to accurately compare something as important as AV software; AV-Comparatives and other groups do tests much more often than the once-in-a-blue-moon CR does an article on it (AV-Comparatives releases reports every few months or so).
According to AV-Comparatives' last on-demand scanning report (from February), MSR scored in 11th out of 20 AV suites tested, with 95.8% of samples detected (slightly worse than McAfee, Kaspersky, and ESET [NOD32], but better than Symantec [Norton] and Trend Micro) and only 1 false detection recorded (only McAfee did better).
Here is that report for your perusal: [Link: www.av-comparatives.org...]
