Ron Paul Wouldn’t Have Ordered the Bin Laden Raid

Crazy uncle stays true to his libertarian principles

If nothing else, Ron Paul is certainly consistent, if by “consistent” you mean “fanatically dedicated to extreme right wing libertarian ideology:” Ron Paul Says He Wouldn’t Have Ordered Bin Laden Raid.

In an interview with Iowa radio station WHO, the likely GOP presidential candidate said “things could have been done somewhat differently.”

“I don’t think it was necessary, no. It absolutely was not necessary,” he said, citing the rules of international law regarding respect for national sovereignty. “I would suggest the way they got Khalid [Sheikh] Mohammed. We went and cooperated with Pakistan. They arrested him, actually, and turned him over to us, and he’s been in prison. Why can’t we work with the government?”

Then poor old OBL would still be stuck in that dreary house. He’s better off now.

In a dark way, they like it better for him to be on the loose. The GOP likes a good boogeyman to scare people.

why are you ducking? It’s pretty obvious they do in some respects. Bin Laden was a useful propaganda device. He was the “other”, After a while it didn’t work so well so it was the “illegals” and still is. Now it’s Obama.

One of the Journalists may have a revelation about Qaddafi:

7:51pm
Muammar Gaddafi was apparently able to sneak into the Rixos - the best hotel in Tripoli, where most of the foreign media resides - to make a videotaped meeting with tribal elders on Wednesday. Now, Sky News’ Mark Stone speculates on how Gaddafi managed to do so without being spotted.

Stone also relays another theory - that Gaddafi is actually staying at the Rixos. It would make sense in at least one big way: NATO would never hit a hotel full of journalists.

19 lawhawk  Thu, May 12, 2011 1:32:59pm

No, we didn’t need to get bin Laden. Right. You know how far out of step he is with even the GOP on this, let alone what the folks over at the CIA and Pentagon who know what OBL is up to now that we successfully carried out the raid?

He isn’t pandering here either - this is clearly delineating what his worldview is and just how out of touch he is with the mainstream on matters of policy. That he managed to be a candidate in 2008 (and looking towards 2012) is a function of putting together a raucous ground game in the first couple of states - NH, IA, etc. - instead of truly having the support of a significant portion of the GOP.

And his chances of winning the presidency on this kind of platform? Zero. Zip. Nada.

After all, can you imaging the debate between him and President Obama.

Paul: No, I wouldn’t have ordered the raid.
Obama: You mean the same raid that not only killed OBL, but which resulted in gathering intel showing his actions, intentions, and ongoing threats.
Paul: But international law!!! Sovereignty of Pakistan? LUAP NOR!!!
Obama: Except for that tiny detail that we had an understanding with Pakistan to carry out raids against HVTs like OBL and Zawahiri dating back to GWB. The Pakistanis can complain, but that’s their part of the bargain. Our part of the bargain was that we got to go after these guys - because we can’t trust our national security solely on other countries to do what’s right in our national interest. This wasn’t a violation of international law and this wasn’t some law enforcement action. This was going after the guy who declared war on the US and killed thousands in the process.

Thus ends the Luap Nor presidential run.

Not surprising, the GOP’s 2008 candidate said the same thing.

THE 2008 DEBATE, REVISITED…. In July 2008, CNN’s Larry King interviewed then-presidential candidate John McCain. The host asked the Republican senator, “If you were president and knew that bin Laden was in Pakistan, you know where, would you have U.S. forces go in after him?”

McCain said he would not.

“Larry, I’m not going to go there and here’s why: because Pakistan is a sovereign nation.”

This point of contention from the 2008 campaign has generally been forgotten, but for a couple of months, this was a major area of debate. Barack Obama declared he would pursue high-value terrorist targets in Pakistan, launching limited attacks based on actionable intelligence. Republicans insisted this was not only the wrong policy, but that the position was evidence of Obama’s inexperience in matters of national security.

Even Mitt Romney tried a similar tack during a nationally televised GOP debate:

“[Obama] went from going to sit down to tea with our enemies, but then he’s going to bomb our allies. I mean, he’s gone from Jane Fonda to Dr. Strangelove in one week.”

With the benefit of hindsight, I’m comfortable concluding now that Obama was right and his Republican critics were wrong.

I remember that well. And by the way Romney’s quote indicates exactly why I think he’s sleazy, really Mitt “Jane Fonda to Dr. Strangelove.” Of course, they were obsessed with portraying Obama as this foreign policy weakling when he’s more ballsy on it than they ever could have dreamed. They wanted to sell Obama to their base as a guy who apologizes for America and that’s been proven to be nothing but bullshit.

Really? By 2008 after Guantanamo bay, extraordinary renditions, CIA blacksites, NSA call monitorings all being publicly admitted to, saying we’d go into Pakistan to kill bin Laden would be the diplomatic mistake?

I think by 2008 Bush and the GOP either thought bin Laden was already dead or that he was simply no longer the high value target. The CIA had shut down the bin Laden station, we were playing nice with Pakistan and the ISI and Iraq had become the focus of a majority of resources. I’ve seen no indication that McCain would change any of these Bush era policies.

He never had a chance anyway. He’s old, a crank, and couldn’t even get out of single digits back in 2008, IIRC. Why would he stand a better chance now?

He stands even less of a chance now, when the Tea Party movement he supposedly started has been co-opted by every yahoo and nutbar that the GOP has to offer. I’m predicting that, come next year, we’ll see a schism in the ranks as the TPers try to decide which side of the “small government” line they really stand upon.

Uganda: Parliament Committee Backs Anti-Homosexuality Bill

The Ugandan parliament’s Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee has regrettably recommended passage of the proposed Anti-Homosexuality Bill, including retaining the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality,” Human Rights Watch said today. The committee’s report, as seen by Human Rights Watch, recommends amendments deleting some provisions but adding criminal penalties for “conduct[ing] a marriage ceremony between persons of the same sex.”

The committee’s report is likely to be presented to parliament on May 13, 2011, as part of a debate before the bill could be up for a vote. Such reports are required under parliamentary procedure. […]

The committee recommends the creation of an additional crime, “conduct[ing] a marriage ceremony between persons of the same sex,” punishable by three years in prison, which was not in the original draft. It also suggests deleting the crimes of “aiding and abetting homosexuality,” and “conspiracy to commit homosexuality,” but including a penalty of seven years in prison for “procuring homosexuality by threats.” The committee did not comment on the current proposed provision criminalizing the “promotion of homosexuality,” which would jeopardize the legitimate work of national and international activists and organizations working to defend and promote human rights in Uganda.

The GOP must be jealous.

You know, my take on the matter is that it’s healthy to have differing viewpoints and opinions on the role of America’s foreign and domestic policies. I’d rather hear what Ron Paul has to say, because at least he tries to explain his logic (which is a damn slight bit better than most people in the opposition. and yes, that’s damning with faint praise).

Ron Paul is wrong in his viewpoint and reasoning. I think in this case the Obama Administration hit the nail on the head when the pointed out that OBL had declared war on the United States and was actively planning more strikes and attacks against us. Therefore we had the right to self defense.

Ron Paul is forgetting that we didn’t declare war on OBL, He declared war on us. That’s why his logic fails.

Debate about the role of the US in the Middle East is a valid one, We can all accept that I think. Do we belong there, do we not? fine fine, argue it, But that doesn’t mean we can or should accept anyone ever attacking the United states and killing it’s people. Ever.

A) they need the vehicle up till the last day(s) they are there
B) some think they’ll keep the car here for when they come back next year (that was a big argument I had with Mrs Satty once in the same situation)
C) Would you buy a car knowing someone else was still going to be using it for several weeks (sorta ties into “A”)

108 lostlakehiker  Thu, May 12, 2011 3:13:33pm

There’s a really simple reason why we couldn’t have got Pakistan to arrest UBL. They would have tipped him off, then “raided” and discovered that there were some eccentric families living there but no intel, no UBL, nothing but mere eccentric recluses.

This estimate of what would have happened is grounded in the record of what already happened, time and again, every time we took Pakistan into the loop. Somewhere in the chain of command, some clerk fires off a text message to somewhere, or nods in a particular way to a chai-wallah, and there we are. Beans spilled.

As it is, right now Pakistan is cooperating-without-cooperating. They have scads of intel from that raid that we didn’t have time to pick up. And go figure. They won’t share it.

Better do a little reading first:

• Peel your bananas first.
• Cut them into small pieces.
• Freeze for just 1-2 hours on a plate. …

The opposite of Killgore’s banana: For camping, slit a banana in its peel, push in some chocolate, wrap peel and all in foil, put in coals for 5-10 minutes, eat w/ spoon. It gets dark and mushy, but has a tangy/sweet taste.

One does not appreciate the sight of earth until he has traveled through a flood. At sea one does not expect or look for it, but here, with fluttering leaves, shadowy forest aisles, house-tops barely visible, it is expected. In fact a grave-yard, if the mounds were above water, would be appreciated. The river here is known only because there is an opening in the trees, and that is all. It is in width, from Fort Adams on the left bank of the Mississippi to the bank of Rapides Parish, a distance of about sixty miles. A large portion of this was under cultivation, particularly along the Mississippi and back of the Red. When Red River proper was entered, a strong current was running directly across it, pursuing the same direction as that of the Mississippi.

House Armed Services Committee Revives Redundant Fighter Engine Pentagon Doesn’t Want

Fiscal responsibility!

Doesn’t matter what engine they put in the F-35. The plane is a piece of junk that will not serve any of the multiple missions it’s designed for.

I have a friend who’s working on testing the one F-35 that has been built. He tells me that the plane has fuel lines with multiple connectors located in places where the plane has to be disassembled to fix a leak. That means taking the outer skin off the airframe.

Also, this plane is designed to be part of the Navy’s carrier fleet but both engines are too big to fit into a cargo plane which can land on a carrier deck! Therefore replacement engines cannot be flown to a carrier.

/ Gonna’ be real easy to fix in a combat zone

I wonder what Luap Nor would have thought of the assassination of Admiral Yamamoto in World War 2? Congress had declared war, it is true, but acts of the US Congress do not define or limit what is regarded as a state of war in international law. The existence of actual warfare, declared or otherwise, does. Unlike Osama, Yamamoto didn’t have any outstanding warrants and he had not even been seriously accused of a crime.

The Paulians no doubt would have bleated and cried about the Yamamoto killing anyway, since the whole Pacific war was a result of the tyrant FDR’s machinations to involve in the European war and thwart the legitimate aspirations of the German people.

Facebook Busted in Clumsy Smear on Google

The social network secretly hired a PR firm to plant negative stories about the search giant, The Daily Beast’s Dan Lyons reveals—a caper that is blowing up in their face, and escalating their war.

For the past few days, a mystery has been unfolding in Silicon Valley. Somebody, it seems, hired Burson-Marsteller, a top public-relations firm, to pitch anti-Google stories to newspapers, urging them to investigate claims that Google was invading people’s privacy. Burson even offered to help an influential blogger write a Google-bashing op-ed, which it promised it could place in outlets like The Washington Post, Politico, and The Huffington Post.

The plot backfired when the blogger turned down Burson’s offer and posted the emails that Burson had sent him. It got worse when USA Today broke a story accusing Burson of spreading a “whisper campaign” about Google “on behalf of an unnamed client.”

But who was the mysterious unnamed client? While fingers pointed at Apple and Microsoft, The Daily Beast discovered that it’s a company nobody suspected—Facebook.

307 Robert O.  Thu, May 12, 2011 5:37:43pm

Ron Paul also said he would legalize Heroin and Cocaine. I guess that would go down well with the vast majority of the white middle class families who, their misguided values aside, form the “Republican base.”

But that is precisely what happens when you get mouth-frothing ideologues running for office.

At the most basic level, ideologies do no more than summarize human behavior into a few general statements. Communism, libertarianism, etc., all sound good on paper. Alas, human behavior is a lot more complex than the axioms that define an ideology. Thus any attempt to impose them is met with catastrophe human consequences.

The United States is in decline because our process remain stuck in ideological battles that were settled long ago. A rapidly changing world (enabled by advances in communication and transportation) demands flexibility and adaptability. Instead, our system is held hostage by ideological puritans and their dogmas. We are increasingly left behind. But instead of learning from others who do things like healthcare and education better than we do, the intransigent ignore the facts, so adamant in their misguided righteousness they insist on ignoring the glaring flaws. Empiricism and pragmatism are no longer the values we practice.

Why is China rising? Because they have abandoned ideology! Remember reformist paramount leader Deng Xiaoping who uttered the famous words: “It does not matter whether the cat is black or white, so long as it catches mice”? What he meant was, whether it is capitalism or socialism, it does not matter so long as it works. China has followed this model and they have prospered since. Meanwhile, we have become a victim of the winner’s dilemma. We have forgotten that pure capitalism did NOT win the Cold War. The solution to extremism in one direction is not extremism in the opposite direction. And as the rest of the world abandoned ideology in favor of the pragmatic approach, the US has gone down the deep end, and the decline of the nation is in proportion to our inability to change and adapt.

I’ve had Luap Nor fanboys echo Crazy Uncle Pat Buchanan and claim that WW2 was an unjustifiable war, which is bizarre, because even Luap Nor says that it was.

When science is driven out of America, we can rely on the Chinese.

Cheap livers anyone?

Scientists generate liver cells from skin.

A team of scientists in China has found a way to restore damaged livers using adult skin stem cells.

The technique raises the possibility of what one liver specialist is calling the “Holy Grail” - that people now needing liver transplants could be simply treated with an injection of their own cells.

Researchers spent three years on the study in which they took skin cells from mice to reproduce fully functional liver cells.

The results, being published in the Journal of Nature today, show the mice were able to live healthy lives.

Professor Geoff McCaughan, the head of the Liver Research Program at the Centenary Research Institute at the University of Sydney, is excited by the Chinese team’s work.

He has worked nationally and internationally in the field of liver transplants for 25 years and says the findings could have dramatic ramifications.

Every year, around 200 Australians have a liver transplant.

“The commonest cause for liver transplantation is the adult community in the western world is people with chronic hepatitis C infection who develop sclerosis or liver cancer,” Professor McCaughan said.

The Chinese scientists have generated large amounts of liver cells in the test tube.

“Then using them to treat animals, in this case a mouse, then dying of liver failure with 100 per cent mortality or 100 per cent death rate, and then transfusing these new cells and only having a 50 per cent death rate,” he said.

“The really exciting bit is that they’ve generated these liver cells from non-liver cells - what they’ve done is get them out of old skin and then transform these cells from skin cells into liver cells.”

Professor McCaughan says the process should be achievable with human cells.

Speaking of Killing franchises I think Rockstar sold GTA to microsoft. There goes that game.

As long as they don’t fuck up Red Dead Redemption, I’m surprisingly okay with that.

The only thing I’ve been able to find is that MS has an exclusive deal with R* for GTA DLC stuff.

EA was trying to buy Take Two some time back, but thankfully that never happened.

I hate Bill O’Reilly but I often watch him anyway. Is there a name for this weird syndrome?

(I am asking for it no doubt. Any reply will be considered constructive since I know Bill-O is a supreme bullshit artist).

Yeah, I’m not seeing anything either. There are rumors of a new GTA game in 2012, but Rockstar isn’t saying anything. I’d imagine that if there is going to be a new GTA, they’ll announce it at E3 next month.

Is there any reason everybody takes off when I get here only to show up after I leave?

Try a shower first.

You can’t tell me you wouldn’t cry after seeing one of you’re all time favorite franchises turn to dust.

Fangirl, actually. And yeah, I’ve got my eyes on LA Noire. It’s already in the Gamefly queue. Hehe.

Rockstar seems to be catering to the console market so I don’t think Red Dead is coming out on PC. Unless I suddenly become rich I’ll never get to play it.

Heh. I bought my 360 because at the time it was cheaper than upgrading my computer. But I got the less expensive, stripped down version.

Hehe. None taken. It’s a natural reflex to point out I’m a gamer chick. :D

Right now, the 250GB XBox 360 and Kinect bundle is $400 at Gamestop. Rumors of a price drop are flying right now because Nintendo is getting ready to announce a new console next month and Microsoft doesn’t want to get overshadowed.

I suspect Sony will spend all of E3 begging forgiveness for the recent security breaches. I’m half-expecting Jack Tretton to do his entire press conference in a hairshirt while he hands out $100 bills.

If it’s still down during E3, Sony are screwed. For their sake, I hope they get it up and running by then.

I like Ron Paul because you know what you are getting when you elect him…

… you’re getting a crazy son of a bitch.

and many things he would do are very necessary… and he will be willing to do them regardless of the situation.

Re: the article, the idea is if he was in charge we wouldn’t be in any of these places, thus removing AQ’s raison d’etre. Admittedly I’m not too hot about this but it is certainly worth trying. Drastic measures for desperate times.
