Egyptians want more butter and fewer guns

Pundits and policy makers alike are most concerned about two related issues: (1) whether the transition will be a smooth one or one marked by violence and (2) what Egypt will look like after the elections. More specific concerns have also been raised, including the role of the military in a democratic Egypt and the threat of sectarian and religious violence. Most of this analysis has focused on the political actors involved — institutions (military, Muslim Brotherhood) as well as individual political players (Mohammad El Baradei, Amr Moussa, Dr Saad Ketana, and Essam Sharaf). In contrast, little attention has been paid to the most important actor of all — public opinion. What do Egyptians want? What do they need?

The short answer to these questions is that Egyptians are most concerned about their jobs and personal safety. Other issues — like foreign policy — are much lower down on their wish list. Indeed, in a recent Ipsos poll, when asked to list their top five concerns, Egyptian voters listed unemployment (83%) and crime/personal safety (75%) as their top concerns. When asked to mention their number one issue, crime and safety was the clear winner.

School board candidates tackle questions including budget, creationism

[…]

The question addressing evolution versus creationism went to Blenner and asked about the nationwide “debate” over teaching both evolution and climate change in science classrooms. Blenner said that during his days as a police liaison officer, some parents were angry when students were shown Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth,” a film about global warming. He wondered about the reaction, viewing the film instead as another chance for students to gather information, he said. Such opportunities allow students to make up their own minds. “Let’s give them as much theory as we can,” he said.

An audience member later asked the same question of Fink.

Fink said, “I believe in creationism and one God,” he said. But Fink said that his belief was one to be taught by himself, his wife and his pastor.

As for students, “I’m interested in science-based evidence.” Fink said he supports giving students the opportunity to debate and question all teaching, just as he did as a student.

Bishops to Senate GOP: Don’t Vote For ‘Morally Indefensible’ Ryan Budget

“This budget eviscerates vital nutrition programs for mothers and infants (WIC), and makes cuts to Medicaid that will hurt sick children, struggling families and seniors in nursing homes,” the letter continued. “Unlike the Good Samaritan, who stopped to care for a wounded stranger on the side of the road, the House budget turns its back on the most vulnerable at a time of grave economic uncertainty even as it endorses policies that gives tax breaks for the privileged few.”

The bishops, who represent the Episcopal Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the United Methodist Church in 19 states, instead called on Senators to come up with a bipartisan budget that “defends human dignity and basic economic security for all Americans.”

Given a certain anger at that horrible law, I’ll just say I look forward to all practical/legal challenges to it.

As this relates to intrusive government, we have another example in another venue-Secret interpretations of the Patriot Act and its many provisions. This is on my mind as I just got back from a seminar featuring ICE/Homeland Security agents explaining how to comply with Anti money laundering Laws (AML’s) and the Patriot Act. Much of it makes sense, some is pretty scary for small businesses even when you do trust the agencies involved. If one has reason to mistrust how these laws are interpreted it’s far more intimidating. Big firms can hire full time compliance executives. Small biz, not so much. Then I read that article at Wired. Sheesh.
It’s not going to be easy to even adjust the act let alone sunset it.

And it means that the Republicans stepped too far, and now there’s cracks starting in the party unison. Nate Silver had a good post up about this.

You can be sure that, by close of business tomorrow, all 5 of those Republicans will have received the “dead horse’s head” that is a Tea Party threat of being “primaried.” Not that it would have mattered, as it wouldn’t have been enough to pass the Plan.

Michigan Senate approves school funding reductions

Final budget votes in the House and Senate could be taken as early as Thursday, meaning lawmakers would beat the self-imposed, informal deadline of May 31 adopted with prompting from Republican Gov. Rick Snyder.

Democrats said the school aid measure approved by the Senate is better than Snyder originally proposed. But Democrats remain upset that there are school aid cuts at all, saying they are not necessary and are being made only to help pay for a business tax cut that Republicans wanted and Snyder signed into law Wednesday.

“It is a budget that robs our kids’ future,” said Sen. Gretchen Whitmer, the Democrats’ leader in the Senate.

Well, the ones that can read anyway:

Education in Kentucky suffers from the same negative stigma as many other Southern states. Some statistics, such as ranking 47th in the nation in percentage of residents with a bachelor’s degree[1] and an adult illiteracy rate of about 40%,[2] seem to justify the stereotype.

Ah. I know that I never really saw those in Colorado and Utah and we had a lot of rednecks out there too. Must be another California trend perhaps. It’s mostly younger people driving those trucks. I had the same reaction. Sadly it’s well sourced:

The state’s staggeringly high adult illiteracy rate—about 40 percent—has begun to decline. A new, stronger Council on Postsecondary Education has begun to impose system-wide policies on what has been a series of campus fiefdoms, sometimes feuding with each other.

Think about that for a second. It’s “begun to decline” … meaning it was worse in the recent past.

I have the feeling that these doctors are not going to have the effect intended if they go through with this.

Doctors and dentists tell patients, “all your review are belong to us”

When I walked into the offices of Dr. Ken Cirka, I was looking for cleaner teeth, not material for an Ars Technica story. I needed a new dentist, and Yelp says Dr. Cirka is one of the best in the Philadelphia area. The receptionist handed me a clipboard with forms to fill out. After the usual patient information form, there was a “mutual privacy agreement” that asked me to transfer ownership of any public commentary I might write in the future to Dr. Cirka. Surprised and a little outraged by this, I got into a lengthy discussion with Dr. Cirka’s office manager that ended in me refusing to sign and her showing me the door.

The agreement is based on a template supplied by an organization called Medical Justice, and similar agreements have been popping up in doctors’ offices across the country. And although Medical Justice and Dr. Cirka both claim otherwise, it seems pretty obvious that the agreements are designed to help medical professionals censor their patients’ reviews.

Short version: These doctors are attempting to force their patients to sign an non-disclosure agreement before treating them, and are using said agreements to supress any commentary that might be detrimental to them.

At least MSNBC did make it clear that it wasn’t acceptable.

Fox News never even blinked at Eric Bolling’s “Obama’s chugging 40s” comment.

Hell, he doubled down…at first it was a tweet, then later it was an expanded comment on his Fox business show.

Yep. Some thought he’d be fired. I didn’t figure he’d suffer in the least for it.

Yep, it was pretty obvious that FOX wasn’t going to do shit to Bolling.

MSNBC on the other hand is on some kind of weird mission to prove that they have a modicum of standards. They suspended Olberman and less than three months later he was fired. I think that’s why Schultz offered up his own suspension rather than have it forced upon him.

A few days ago a page was put up that claims putting social security “on budget” or in a “unified budget” is fraudulent just on that fact alone. I have been arguing against the point. I’m curious what some others may think on the matter. For those with an interest and some knowledge of S/s and budgeting here is a link to the page.

Photo Diary of prison overpopulation

Then today:

California parole officials rejected a plea on Tuesday from a quadriplegic convict who had hoped to become the first state prison inmate released under a new law aimed at cutting the number of inmates and the cost of care in the nation’s largest state prison system.

He costs 625K a year.

I had a chance to check out all the big honkin diamond wedding bands on the rich suburban wifes in the stairwell at Nordstrom’s. Lots of cushion set in platinum. I would guess 3 carats as an average.

From now on, when I see these ladies in all their finery, I’ll think of Maria Shriver and that’ll be a good splash of cold water in my face.
