Boehner puts another feather of fail in his cap.
Members rejected the bill in a 195-230 vote that saw 48 Republicans vote against the measure, and only six Democrats support it.
Funding for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was by far the most controversial element in the bill. Aside from falling short of demands for more FEMA funds, Democrats objected to a $1.5 billion cut to the Department of Energy’s Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program, which helped pay for the FEMA increase.
“I have serious objection to the pay for in this legislation,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said. “I have a bigger objection that we would have to pay for disasters. We never paid for the tax cuts for the rich, they never were paid for. We never paid for the wars in Afghanistan in Iraq, they were never paid for.”
And Nancy once again gets to slap the little orange bitch around…I think he might actually like that.

It’s called bipartisanship. If those same 48 Republicans were willing to buck their party and support Democratic proposals, we could actually geta jobs plan through…but they won’t, and Boehner wouldn’t give them the opportunity anyway…this is, I think, the fourth time he’s lost on a bill he thought was a ‘sure thing’…

Here’s the Politico article:House shoots down spending bill
A compromise is still possible, but Wednesday’s skirmishing is a reminder of the same brinksmanship politics that so soured voters on Congress over the summer. Difficult budget negotiations lie ahead this fall on a very compressed schedule. Yet having felt bullied by Republicans in the debt crisis standoff, Democrats seem more prone now to bully back, so to speak, playing the hardball aggressor even on such an essential funding bill.
It seems that this is a nice time to give the Republicans the rope to hang themselves. Playing hardball on the debt debate was too risky because the consequences would have been catastrophic. Giving the Republicans the opportunity to block disaster aid lets us see how serious they are. The consequences would be bad but public anger could be serious.

I must admit I felt no twinge when I read the guy that dragged the young black man in chains behind the pick up truck was sentenced to die in Texas.
But this case of Troy Davis feels very different, as we do have far less certainty. And witness recants. I hope that is genuine recollection not a recant because of a dislike for the death penalty.
I’d be fine with life without parole instead. But some cases just fail to get my sympathy. Maybe my bad, but that’s honestly how I reacted.

re: #54 Rightwingconspirator
Yeah. It’s that you can never set up a death penalty system based on that twinge. It’s always going to wind up with innocent guys dying. And it’s just all rather pointless.
I don’t have any sympathy for anyone who’s just a flat-out incorrigible murderer. I may intellectually think that everyone can be reformed, anyone, but that’s not a policy you can put into actual practice. So I’d e fine with just killing the really evil guilty guys. But we can never reach that level of perfection. There always be innocent guys who get hung for a crime they didn’t commit. There’s too much politically at stake for prosecutors for it not to happen. There’s too many times it’s just two witnesses blaming each other and the cops making a choice which one to believe.

A number of the recants allege police coercion, which does not shock me at all in Georgia. I lived there for over 15 years, including in Savannah. One of the two remaining witnessess who did not recant allegedly implicated himself for the shooting at a party while he was drunk. There is no physical evidence of any sort that ties Davis to the shooting, so all we have is extremely shaky eyewitness testimony, including that from someone who seems to be setting a frame up.

Battle Over Disaster Relief Foils Stopgap Spending Bill
A successful Democratic whip effort left Republicans without enough support in their caucus to pass the bill along party lines. Over 40 Republicans, demanding steeper cuts to federal programs, rebelled against GOP leadership.
….
Now House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and his leadership team must decide whether to acquiesce to the Democrats, or to cut discretionary spending below the level provided for in this bill. Neither option is good from Boehner’s perspective. Appeasing Democrats will cost him support in his caucus, further weakening his standing in his party. But bowing to his own members by cutting spending even further would violate an agreement he struck with Democrats during the debt limit fight, and poison an already sour relationship between leaders of both parties.GOP leadership is now debating whether to seek a new, less controversial offset, to scrap the idea of offsetting altogether, or to disentangle the disaster aid from the government funding bill altogether — to essentially admit that yoking the two together in the first place was an error.
I don’t think the GOP can get the votes to pass anything. Shutdown might be inevitable.

It is inevitable, it was simply delayed earlier this year. The Tea Partiers and their fellow travelers in the House ranks have decided that they’ve got some traction now, in the wake of the deficit ceiling debacle, and are pressing for their ideology to be heeded.
And having Nancy Pelosi publicly spank Boehner’s ass for insisting on paying for disaster relief, while we’re still looking at the bill for Part D and two foreign wars, is just icing on the cake.

Obama can’t do anything. The SCOTUS can, but that’s it.

Nope. It is up to the SCOTUS.
He is a dead man. I can’t imagine laying on the table waiting for them to make their decision. This is cruel and inhumane.
Yeah if they are just going to execute him 30 minutes later after sitting strapped up to a bed is just unbelievable.
If I were in Georgia the only thing holding me back from rioting at this point would be Troy Davis’s wishes.

There is no point making a deal with the Republicans because they’ve already said they won’t keep their promises.
That will become especially true if Boehner decides to bow to those 40 hold-outs and double-down on cuts. He goes forward with that, the deficit ceiling deal unravels.

EU in fresh row over biofuels’ ‘green’ claims
A fresh row has erupted in Brussels over the environmental benefits of biofuels, with academics and EU officials at loggerhead over how to account for CO2 savings in the product’s life cycle.
A group of 19 European scientists have argued that the EU’s biofuels policy was based on a “serious accounting error” and should be changed, triggering a row with the European Commission, which defends biofuels for being “carbon neutral”.
The row began with the leaking of an opinion by the Scientific Committee of the European Environment Agency (EEA) last week.
The report eviscerates the official EU stand that biofuels are environmentally beneficial, as an accounting error with “immense” potential consequences.
The EU says that the carbon absorbed by biofuel plants when growing offsets their CO2 emissions when burned.
“The CO2 emitted from burning biofuels is assumed to be carbon neutral, as the carbon was taken out of the atmosphere when the biomass grew. It therefore does not add carbon to the atmosphere, as this carbon is part of the existing carbon cycle,” an EU official told EurActiv in an email.
But the panel of 19 EEA scientists decided that this neglected the fact that other carbon-absorbing plants would have grown in the biofuels place, if the land was fertile, and so any carbon absorption from the biofuels was being “double-counted”.
“What comes out the tail pipe of a car is real carbon dioxide, whether you’re burning biofuel or diesel,” an academic associated with the study said. “You get the benefit from plant growth [but] land grows plants anyway, whether you’re using them for biofuels or not.”

He’s right. This is state’s right bit I agree with. I mean, I think the death penalty should be overruled, but the president shouldn’t be able to pardon people for crimes not brought by his department of justice. It would simply automatically pass the buck on every pardon decision up to the president, and could be used to actively screw with governors, too.

[Updated at 8:10 p.m.] The time that the U.S. Supreme Court is taking to rule on Davis’ motion for a stay of execution is unusual, CNN senior legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin said. “Usually, it’s handled pretty promptly,” Toobin said.Davis’ lawyers filed the motion at about 6 p.m., an hour before Davis’ scheduled execution. The state attorney general’s office filed a response shortly afterward.
The two hours that the court has had the motion is “not a long time, but it’s long enough for (the nine justices) to respond and say, ‘Go ahead,’” Toobin said. “So it does suggest that they’re taking this seriously, and there may be some disagreement.”

not just like an abortion, in which the being is distinctly not guilty of anything. an execution, when based on an accurate conviction, involves a being who is guilty, usually of a hideous crime like dragging someone to death behind a pickup.

Texas executes man in race-motivated dragging death
Brewer, together with the two other men, offered Byrd a ride home, attacked him on a country road, chained his ankles to the back of a pickup, and then dragged him behind the truck for several miles in the vicinity of Jasper, Texas, according to a report by the Texas Attorney General’s Office.

35 bodies dumped in Mexican city as president begins effort to woo tourists
As Mexican President Felipe Calderon was unveiling a new campaign and TV program Tuesday to draw wary tourists back to his country, a gang dumped 35 bodies at a busy intersection in the tourist zone in the coastal city of Veracruz.
No one suggests that the events are related, but the gruesome appearance of two truckloads of bloody corpses in front of a large shopping mall at rush hour — just a few blocks from a hotel where state prosecutors were meeting — dominated the news cycle here and threatened to overwhelm Calderon’s campaign to woo tourists.
The images from the travel television program, called “Mexico: The Royal Tour” — clips of gray whales, Mayan pyramids and glasses of amber tequila — clashed with shaky videos captured by cellphone cameras of panicked commuters, wailing police vehicles and half-naked bodies dumped on an underpass near the Veracruz beaches.
Authorities in Veracruz said the 35 bodies included 24 men and 11 women. They quickly tried to calm the public — and foreign visitors — by saying that most of the dead were criminals who were killed by a warring drug cartel.

Actually… according to Jewish law, there are circumstances in which a fetus *is* considered guilty of something. When a pregnancy poses serious risk to a woman’s health we classify the fetus as “a pursuer,” and the woman be protected. Abortion is required in such cases.
I somehow doubt the advocates of “conscience clauses” would be sympathetic to the demands of the doctor’s religion if it’s a Jewish doctor performing an abortion at 24 weeks in Nebraska.

it’s all about the truth…they are doing their job, but if testimony is flawed, it’s on the witness…if there is wrongdoing by the prosecutor then he needs to answer for it, but I seriously doubt that’s the case….I think almost all of this new stuff is trumped up….again…but if nobody saw him do it, and he does not confess, you can’t just ice the guy….gotta have more than some half wit witness to give him the needle

I have thoughts like this sometimes about these really evil fuckers. Then I realize that my fantasy treatment - some kind of unending suffering - is almost worse than their original crime. It’s at that point I realize the death penalty isn’t severe enough. Lifetime incarceration without possibility of parole is really the most humane way to treat them - even though they may adapt to life behind bars and accept it - as people do.

Looks likely that like he’s going for a vote:
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas plans to make the request for U.N. membership and statehood after he speaks to the U.N. General Assembly in New York on Friday. The U.S. says it will block the move in the U.N. Security Council, thought the Palestinians could also go to the General Assembly and seek the lesser status of “non-member observer state.”

I see, you want simplistic answers to a complex situation. Good luck with that. You say that you don’t want to see more innocents killed, but you want to kill the expensive appeals process that weeds them out.
Studies show that administering the death penalty is even more expensive than keeping someone in prison for life. The intensive jury selection, trials and appeals required in capital cases can take over a decade and run up a huge tab for the state. Death row, where prisoners facing execution are kept in separate cells under intense observation, is also immensely costly.

Looks likely that like he’s going for a vote:
We’ll veto the motion, but a lot of people around the world are going to be pissed when we do. But this is one of those times when the US simply sees things differently than the rest of the world. Of all the candidates for President who have chance of winning (including the incumbent) there is not one that would not veto the motion.

if a guy kills somebody and admits it, then execute him…if it’s obvious that a person has murdered, then execute them…if a guy is pinned by various, even conflicting accounts and he has a reasonable alibi, but the jury convicts him, with no film, no confession, nothing but some other persons word and mixed circumstantial evidence, don’t execute him…pretty simple indeed

Even simpler: keep the government out of the revenge business and don’t execute anyone. It’ll save the states money and prevent the unnecessary deaths of innocents. Besides, chances are that a real monster will either meet some prison justice (Dahmer) or spend the rest of his days in solitary (Manson, BTK).

Not simple, simplistic. Confessions can be coerced and there isn’t a single form of evidence than can’t be faked, planted or misinterpreted with modern technology. The 100% certain situation is exceedingly rare and building an entire system around it just isn’t cost effective. The extra jury, prison, and security needs are built into the system. Look at the number of officers involved in the circuses today, they don’t come free, or even cheap. Executions rile up the rest of the prison population so that prisoners and corrections officers end up getting hurt or worse. Like torture it’s an exercise in venting rage, it’s not about being effective.

Very understandable. I’m just not comfortable with the government killing anyone. It’s tough sometimes (like in the hypothetical case you mentioned), but I just can’t condone the idea of the state deciding what is considered heinous enough and/or how much proof is necessary to execute somebody. Now, if your hypothetical murderer’s fellow inmates found out about his crimes and decided to take matters into their own hands, well, I’m not acting as a human shield ;)

September 20, 2011: The U.S. Army leadership is upset at the recent award of the Medal of Honor (the highest American award for valor) to U.S. Marine Corps sergeant Dakota Meyer. The army generals don’t begrudge sergeant Meyer his medal, because he risked his life two years ago, for several hours, in order to save the lives of 24 Afghan and American troops trapped in an ambush. What disturbs the army leaders most is that Meyer was not alone while performing his heroic act. He had a companion, Army captain William Swenson, But Swenson has received no recognition from the army. That’s because Swenson has been vocal about why he and sergeant (then corporal) Meyer had to perform those heroic acts (of driving a vehicle into the ambush, grabbing survivors and shooting their way out, and doing it five times.) Before the two off them drove off on their suicidal mission. Swenson tried to get a nearby army headquarters to provide artillery and air support for the trapped men, but the officers on duty refused.
This was because a new general had taken over command of U.S. troops in Afghanistan three months earlier, and issued strict rules on the use of American firepower when there was any risk to Afghan civilians. This was part of an effort to reduce civilian casualties. Troops in Afghanistan, and everyone back home, were told that these new rules would not prevent American troops getting fire support if their lives were in danger. But for Meyer and Swenson, the restrictions were killing American troops (in this case, four marines and a soldier.) The closest American headquarters had maps showing the ambush taking place near a village, so there was great reluctance to use bombs or artillery.
Meyer and Swenson both subsequently left the military. But Swenson kept pressing the army to punish the officers at the nearby headquarters who repeatedly refused to provide any fire support for the trapped troops. If Swenson, Meyer and two other marines had not driven in, at great risk to themselves, over twenty U.S. and American troops would have died. The two other marines were awarded the Navy Cross (the second highest award). Swenson is believed to be up for a medal, but the army won’t say what, or when. The army has not punished anyone for refusing fire support, and apparently wishes the entire matter would fade away.
Read the whole thing.

Yes, but that too is simplistic. I think it’s more about fear, in this case it’s either fear of chaos or fear of being perceived as weak that in this case trumps fear of the government. It’s the same thing with Islamophobia, fear of the other that trumps, as long as the targeted population can be perceived as alien enough, granting the government clearly abusable authority over them is okay. As long as they remain the target.

Well, I just don’t buy the premises in that article. For example, the writer says:
One of the reasons Jesus was crucified was because of his refusal to embrace a nationalist agenda.
That’s just ahistorical. Rome crucified people all over the empire, for the very reason that they were perceived to be a threat (nominally to the empire, but more practically to the person in power.)
As the story is told in the Gospels, Pilate killed Jesus along with the rabble rouses, and we know from other sources that Pilate would go up to Jerusalem at key times with his military to keep the peace.
Jesus was crucified thus explicitly for the opposite reason give b the writer of that article. Integrating the Gospel stories with what we know about the Roman rule of Judea: the Temple leaders portrayed to the Romans that Jesus was indeed one of the terrorists of the day and thus was worthy of the death penalty.
As near as I can tell from what limited information we have about the person, Jesus of Nazareth wouldn’t care for the nationalistic/political goals of either the Zionists or the Palestinian parties.

I hate the death penalty. Hate it, hate it HATE IT. The guy may be guilty as sin but this feels terribly wrong.
What he did to his victim was more wrong than what, we, as a society, did to him. I’ll take my beatings for this post.
And the fact that we can DISCUSS IT FREELY says a LOT about us as a society.

I’m not 100% sure, but I’d suspect that what the article (which I haven’t even read lol) is trying to say there is related to the bit where Pilate offered clemency to one of the people being executed, of the crowds choice.

Even if it is the same, we have to hold society to a higher standard than the random guy on the street.

problem being that the system is the opposite of self correcting. If anything all they need to hear is that he was already found guilty.
In the case of OVERWHELMING evidence of innocence (ala WM3), they always try to cut a deal rather than have to admit they were wrong.
Edit: and its more that police can put people under INTENSE pressure to lie if they’ve decided they’ve got their man. It’s a lot easier to fold, especially if you can’t afford a ton of nice lawyers yourself.

The Troy Davis case.
See this post to see why it’s in no way firm enough to warrant executing someone.
Horrible… simply horrible. The standard of evidence as set by the supreme court when the death penalty was reinstituted was even more firm than guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. What possible good does executing a most likely innocent man do for anyone?
This is state sanctioned murder for the sake of appearances. It is not the first or the last time such things have happened or will happen in America and it is an abomination.

Probably and maybe it was founded in trying to make them less attractive as targets. He talked about the crime of killing a witness as being the most horrible, I remember awhile back, when a story came out about a young boy, who was a witness to a crime, was killed if I remember correctly it was in Rhode Island…not sure if that was a case that led to the change to make it a death penalty case to kill a witness…looking for the link, not finding it, anyone remember? I believe his mom was killed as well…
I recall the story - the boy was only 8 or 9 years old. Can’t remember about his mom.

In my mind the only time we should ever even consider the Death Penalty is those cases where the guy in question went on a shooting spree in the middle of a crowded area and got tackled/tazed into submission until the police arrived and there is security tape of him shooting the place up.
Since we’re not going to be getting very many criminals that dumb (and those that are probably get sent to the loony bin instead) which is why on principle we should probably just get rid of the Death Penalty.

Long-term trend in global CO2 emissions; 2011 report
After a 1 percent decline in 2009, global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions increased by more than 5 percent in 2010, which is unprecedented in the last two decades. The industrialised countries that ratified the Kyoto Protocol, together with the non-ratifying USA emitted approximately 7.5 percent less CO2 in 2010 than in 1990 and collectively remain on target to meet the original Kyoto Protocol objective of a 5.2 percent reduction. However their efforts are increasingly hidden in the global picture as their share of CO2 emissions has dropped from two-thirds to less than half.

IMO the “450” figure is arbitrary.
The answer to the first question is “yes”, we can easily get to 650ppm by the end of the century, and more in coming centuries. The actually amount of hydrocarbon resources is hotly contested (see for example Yergin’s commentary that is stirring up the Peak Oil clusterfuck.)
The answer to the last question is “no”, because Venus and Earth are different planets and we are a water planet. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t pretty much create one of the biggest extinctions in Earth’s long history.

We’ve got about two centuries of fossil fuel left that is reasonably recoverable, given unknown unknowns and known knowns and projections
(thank you, Donald Rumsfeld!). The obvious question is “Then what?”, which the extraction industries answer with “grumble grumble grumble”.
Best guess, given the increasing use of coal around the world as an electric generating power source is around 550 ppm. But by then, the coasts will be trashed and the world will be in a global trade/food crisis.

That’s why the air pressure on Venus is equivalent to what you’d find at the lowest ocean depths on Earth - boil that amount of water, and all its weight/volume in the form of water vapor winds up in the atmosphere (so the idiot denier meme that Venus got hot because of its dense atmosphere is ass-backwards - it’s the other way around. The greenhouse effect is what made that atmosphere so dense.)
Then again, Venus is a good deal closer to the sun than the Earth. Surely that made a difference at some point? I mean, even if we go all Permian extinction event, I’d like to at least keep the miniscule consolation that other life could spring up again on Earth some day :(

IT won’t be Venus exactly. It will be very very bad though. Billions will die is not hyperbole.
I have no doubt this is a pragmatic outlook, hyperbole it is not.

I am not; if I am by DNA I don’t know.
Heh, 23AndMe tests are only $99 now…
However, there is no such thing as “Jewish” DNA as it is pretty clear from what is known now that there has been a great deal of interbreeding throughout SW and W Eurasia.

Oy! That place is going to eat my time like it was candy. I’ll also snag a copy of the Artscroll edition too. Thanks!
Yeah it is an awesome site and very kosher - in the sense that the people who write it are serious Rabbaim who know their stuff. Start with the basics, and Avot is a great place to start. Their advanced stuff assumes a great deal of knowledge and requires a great deal of background to approach

That is why I don’t think it will ever quite get to Venus levels (the difference in orbit, mass and make up). However, it is something of a moot debate, because all such things would happen after we as a species had been wiped out anyway.

Where I’m going, or what’s been bouncing around in my head the last few days, is the darkest of irony: will civilization collapse before it can push the C02 past the ‘tipping point’ …
The world has many issues knocking down the door… future wars over resources could prove particularly nasty.

Not quite so… There are certain genetic markers for the tribe. The Cohen markers are amongst the most famous.

I was just curious. I am sure you will enjoy the classes from Torah.org in any case and I would recommend them to anyone who was interested whatever their background..
I took some classes on Judaism in undergrad (Religion major, Religion in grad school, also.) My own background is actually the Rick Perry Religious Crankjob “Dominionist” set… by way of Methodism and a family of preachers, both parents included on my mother’s side….sigh, it’s complicated. Religion-watching hobbyist, these days. So I’m always looking for more to learn.

Let’s say one of those wars goes nuclear. What do you think that would do the climate? I’m not sure how accurate the “nuclear winter” scenarios are, or how long they’d last (in the event of a localized war as opposed to all-out cold-war-nightmare armageddon)

Are you in the Tribe?
I’m not in the Red Sea Pedestrian tribe, I’m in the Mackerel Snapping, Mary Worshipping, No Irish Need Apply tribe (but retired from the Catholic bits).
Now, I am in the Science Believing Secular Humanist Deist tribe.
Can’t we all just get along?

Pfft, mine was $250 a couple years ago…shoulda waited :/ I have enough Euro to send it somewhere else to find out some specifics, but I want specifics on it all. Well, as specific as it gets, anyway.

If you had 23andMe do a test a couple of years ago, did you have them retest the sample on their latest V3 chip? 750,000 regions ought to be enough to pinpoint just about any ancestry!

Have you used Orthodox incense? I go to the big cathedral in SF to get mine and have little chats with the priests who work in the store. Nothing like it…

Should also add - I almost converted to Anglicanism in the late 80s. One of the most memorable services I’ve ever been to was when Bishop Barbara Harris came to St. John’s in LA, a historic Black congregation, in 1989. That was some serious high church. And the most notable thing about her? She is short!

Many people don’t realize, even if they know about 1066, that the Normans were descendants (for the most part) of Vikings. So the British Isles had multiple inputs from the Norse.

Norman shortened from Norse Man… And we can talk about king Robert of Sicily too if you want.
This is really cool. I never pictured you for a viking sort though… I love when web expectations are changed.

If you go the 23andMe route, after paying the $99 up front one can also sign up for the $9/mo subscription that guarantees retesting when new chips come out, and allows one to put their results into the giant computer to find relatives, etc.
I’ve been thinking of doing that myself. While my Y line has 3 centuries of Norse in it I do know that the paternal namesake originated in the British Isles (an ancestor fled England for Norwat during the great intra-Christian upheaval). And, the mtDNA line probably traces back through the UK to the central or NW Europe, though that is quite unclear.
