Mitt Romney says that he opposed the government bailout of Detroit because the private market would have provided loans so GM and Chrysler could go through managed bankruptcy, but it turns out the firm Romney once led, Bain Capital, turned down the chance to do so. The government's auto task force asked Bain Capitol if it would like to invest in GM's European operations, The New York Times' Jeremy W. Peters reports, but Bain said no thanks. Detroit executives and Obama administration officials say that Romney is wrong: government money was necessary because at the worst of the financial crisis, private companies would not have lent the $80 billion the automakers needed. Based on The Times report, we now know that the government's argument was true in the case of at least one company: the one Romney helped found and shape.
Again, Romney is relying on a fundamental, pervasive public ignorance regarding how utterly frozen the credit markets were in 2009. Most people still don't grasp how bad things were. There was no angel investor to help guide GM through Chapter 11, if they were going to survive and not be totally liquidated it was up to the federal government to do the investing. This is exactly what Romney advised against and for him to take credit for it now is the height of mendacity. The man has no integrity, at all. He stands for nothing beyond his own desire to be President and will tell whatever lie he thinks he can get away with in the moment, no matter how egregious, to get him there.

Obama's administration provided the necessary bankruptcy bailout for the automakers, one that Romney explicitly argued against. The ad is clear, Romney's own words are clear, the president's actions are clear.

Exactly. Mitt wants to compare what did happen to a Utopian alternative reality he dreamt up in hindsight, never mind that his alternative reality had zero chance of ever happening.
This is how scoundrels campaign. They compare an imperfect solution to a perfect one that only exists in their dream world and they present that as how they would have handled things.

The main cost disadvantage that the American companies had versus their foreign rivals was the legacy costs and health care costs. The main driver for increased health care costs has been the fact that the ones with health insurance have to cover the costs incurred by the people without health insurance and as more employers dropped health care benefits, the ones who maintained those benefits had to pay more and more. This is why the GOP griping about the cost of Union benefits is mostly BS.
All of the other major Nations that the US Industry competes against have national health care and this ends up holding costs down for the labor.

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama's popularity among women, minorities and independents is giving him an early edge over his likely GOP rival, Mitt Romney, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll.
The Democratic president also earns strong marks on empathy, sincerity, likeability and social issues. But Americans are split over which candidate can best handle the economy, which might open pathways for Romney six months before the November election.
Half of registered voters say they would back Obama in November, while 42 percent favor Romney, the AP-GfK poll found. About a quarter of voters indicated they are persuadable, meaning they are undecided or could change their minds before Election Day.
Forty-one percent of voters say they are certain to vote for Obama, and 32 percent say they are locked in for Romney.
I just can't imagine why blacks, women and minorities aren't interested in voting GOP...

From that same article:
"The American auto industry is vital to our national interest as an employer and as a hub for manufacturing. A managed bankruptcy may be the only path to the fundamental restructuring the industry needs. It would permit the companies to shed excess labor, pension and real estate costs. The federal government should provide guarantees for post-bankruptcy financing and assure car buyers that their warranties are not at risk."
He didn't advocate the government completely washing their hands of it and letting the free market do what it does. At the time the article was written the CEOs of the car companies were asking for a bailout, not to finance a managed bankruptcy but just to survive. For the next few months they submitted several plans for restructuring without bankruptcy in the end the Obama administration decided a managed bankruptcy would be the best option. Romney "taking credit" is pretty ridiculous, but he is also getting a bad rap on the "Let detroit go bankrupt" thing.

Romney's plan included federal loan guarantees and federal backing of warranties. That's a big difference from ordinary Chapter 11. We don't know if private funds would have materialized under those conditions.

That's exactly what he said though, verbatim. Being a businessman he was in the best position to understand that the credit markets were frozen, so frozen that even Bain Capital, when approached, said no thanks. Why shouldn't I believe that he understood that if the government didn't invest in GM that the only other available path forward was Chapter 7, total liquidation of the company with all assets individually auctioned off to the highest bidder?

We also don't know that those weren't the terms offered to Bain. The fact that the credit markets were frozen precluded all kinds of deals because there was no available money being lent under any terms. Also, what is the advantage of providing a federal loan guarantee vs. having the government invest directly? It seems to me that loan guarantees are what left the government in the lurch when Solyndra dissolved.
What Romney was proposing was to socialize all of the risk while privatizing the rewards, that's hardly a free market solution. However it's entirely in line with what Romney did while at Bain, taking loans against pension funds knowing that if the companies failed the States would be on the hook to honor and bail out the highly leveraged accounts.

78 | Gus Wed, May 9, 2012 7:36:07pm |
Same-sex marriage had majority support—majorities voted against Amendment One--in seven of North Carolina’s 100 counties. They were Orange County (Chapel Hill, University of North Carolina), where 79% voted no; Durham County (Duke University), 70%, Wake County (Raleigh, state capital, North Carolina State University), 57%; Mecklenburg County (Charlotte), 54%; Chatham County (adjacent to the first three counties listed above), 51%; Buncombe County (Asheville), 51%; and Watauga County (Appalachian State University), 51%.
In addition, the same-sex marriage position came very close to prevailing in Guilford County (Greensboro, High Point), 49.97%; New Hanover County (Wilmington), 49.6%; Dare County (Outer Banks), 48%; and Forsyth County (Winston-Salem), 47%.
In other words, voters in the central counties of the state’s big metropolitan areas and in counties dominated by university towns on balance favored same-sex marriage. These 11 counties account for 42% of the votes cast statewide. Overall 56% for same-sex marriage. The other 89 counties, which cast 58% of the votes, voted 73% against same-sex marriage.
I split that up into 3 paragraphs.

Romney doesn't currently hold office. What could he have done in 2009-2011, other than give to charity?
He can't have it both ways. If he want's to take credit for decisions he was in no way involved with, and in fact advised against he can account for the rest of his actions during this period.
re: #79 danarchy
Headline not withstanding, the content of the article makes it pretty clear he thought the government had a significant role to play in a managed bankruptcy.
In 2012 Romney made it clear that he still thought Obama should not have stepped in:
A labor union that had contributed millions to Democrats and his election campaign was granted an ownership share of Chrysler and a major stake in GM, two flagships of the industry. The U.S. Department of Treasury — American taxpayers — was asked to become a majority stockholder of GM. And a politically connected and ethically challenged Obama-campaign contributor, the financier Steven Rattner, was asked to preside over all this as auto czar.
This was crony capitalism on a grand scale. The president tells us that without his intervention things in Detroit would be worse. I believe that without his intervention things there would be better.
That's pretty unambiguous, Romney is saying there that the specific structural decisions Obama made with regards to the bankruptcy itself were wrong and that he shouldn't have intervened.

I agree for the most part but there are situations where globalization is not all good. For example if your Nation has strong environmental protection laws and worker safety regulations and another Nation lets factories dump pollution into the air and water and doesn't mind when they kill off workers in unsafe factories, than it doesn't make so much sense to let that other nation import into your market and undermine your own economy. This is a very real problem.
If we are concerned about the environment that we increase costs on our own businesses but then we turn a blind eye and let other nations who don't care about the pollution sell their products here what did we accomplish except undermine our own economic base?
So its not as simple as saying deal with it, you have no choice..

One observation about globalization.. I spent a couple weeks in Thailand helping a factory there solve some production issues. Their labor is cheap, about $10 per day. But they used 6-8 times as many people as a similar plant in the States would use for the same operations. Contrary to what the folks who know nothing say about what happens in American factories, our workers here are highly productive. As time goes on, their wages will creep up and the extra manpower will have to go away. Another thing is that energy is often a bigger part of the cost of a product than labor and in the developing world where labor is cheap, energy usually isn't.
The companies that made a mad dash to offshore jobs will soon enough begin to realize that the cost advantage will continue shrinking until its gone.

Get out what vote? You can only purge a congressman as a RINO if the Republicans in his district see him as a RINO, and those in Dold's district are unlikely to do so over funding for Planned Parenthood.
The other thing this bill does, and frankly its the bigger thing, is that it neutralizes his Democratic challenger, Brad Schneider,'s ability to charge Dold with being part of a "GOP War on Women". Dold just clearly stated "Ladies, I have no designs upon your uteri.", and given that PP clinics do serve poorer residents of North Chicago* and Zion, this may reduce the desire of those who use such clinics to vote against him. It will likely also keep him out of NARAL's gunsights.

One of the creationist idiocies of they day comes from NRO, and is inter-twined with AGW denialism, brought forward by none other than Cato hack Patrick Michaels, who titled his piece "Guilt by Association; Let’s stop conflating the creationist hoi polloi with skeptical climate scientists."
Imagine that, those nasty people which Michaels labels the "left" are trying guilt-by-association on Michaels' buddies.
But wait... let's see what Michaels wrote:
[
...]
Note to the Left on this one: No one — scientist or otherwise — has yet come up with the definitive explanation of the first life forms on earth. There is no conclusive bridge between self-replicating molecules capable of mutation (a definition of life) and the primordial, lifeless, dimly-lit planet Earth of some 3 billion years ago. So even the most erudite thinkers must resort to aliens, life-bearing comets, God — or, in my case, beats-the-heck-out-of-me.
[...]
Wait... what's that again, Michaels throws in "God" making the first, and aliens too?
This is just standard clap from the anti-rationalist atavists.
Michaels is explicitly committing the very faulty, and dishonest, thinking of which he is whining that he and others are unfairly accused!
My solace comes from the comments over there, seeing that the few who have commented on this (hyped on the front page of NRO for a while) are stuck arguing about creationism.

*: North Chicago is a Lake County our suburb of Chicago. There is also a South Chicago, West Chicago, and East Chicago. East Chicago is in Indiana, all the others are in Illinois.
The problem Dold is going to face now is that Republicans outside his district are going to be far less likely to send him money. Also Mitt Romney who officially wants to defund PP and who's coattails in Chicago aren't big to begin with isn't going to spend much time or effort supporting him. After redistricting Dold now finds himself in enemy territory with Obama's nationwide campaign HQ camped uncomfortably close.

Is not 5.6 MILLION a "huge number of women who choose to listen to Rush".
A weekly audience is a cumulative number for a 7 day period. That makes the audience at any given time 20,000,000/5 (I assume he broadcasts 5 days a week) making the daily audience an average of 4,000,000. 28% of 4,000,000 is 1,120,000 which is a bit less than 5.6 mil.

[
Wait... what's that again, Michaels throws in "God" making the first, and aliens too?
This is just standard clap from the anti-rationalist atavists.
Michaels is explicitly committing the very faulty, and dishonest, thinking of which he is whining that he and others are unfairly accused!
My solace comes from the comments over there, seeing that the few who have commented on this (hyped on the front page of NRO for a while) are stuck arguing about creationism.
In all fairness, I find his Note only slightly flawed.
He does list my option, which is "I don't know". His fault is in giving all these options a seemingly equal treatment. We may not know at this time the exact mechanisms, but we're getting there at least.

Mystery of F-22 illnesses grows
Even as the Air Force searches for the reason pilots are getting sick flying the F-22, a new mystery about the troubled stealth fighter jet has come to light: Why are mechanics on the ground getting sick in the plane as well?
The Air Force has been looking into a number of reports that pilots experienced "hypoxia-like symptoms" aboard F-22s since April 2008. Hypoxia is oxygen deficiency.
The Air Force reports 25 cases of such systems, including 11 since September, when the service cleared the F-22 fleet to return to flight after a four-month grounding.
The fleet was grounded in May 2011 so the service could check the hypoxia reports, but the order was lifted in September under a "return to fly" plan, with equipment modifications and new rules including daily inspections of the life-support systems.
"Early on in the return to fly we had five maintainers that reported hypoxia symptoms," Gen. Daniel Wyman, command surgeon for the Air Combat Command, said during a conference call with reporters Wednesday.
The maintainers are mechanics on the F-22's ground crews who sometimes have to be in the cockpit while the jet's engine is doing a ground run.
"The maintainers, when they are doing their ground run, are not on the mask, they are in the cockpit," Wyman said.
The problem with maintainers getting sick while on the ground throws a wrench into some of the theories about why at least 25 pilots have suffered hypoxia symptoms.
The Air Force experts trying to figure out the cause of the problem have pointed out that the F-22 flies higher and faster than its predecessors, the F-15 and F-16.
There has also been speculation that there perhaps could be a problem with the system that feeds oxygen to the pilot's mask while in flight.
Asked what is causing the symptoms in maintainers on the ground, not wearing a mask, Wyman said, "I can't answer that at this time."
Sunday, two F-22 pilots told CBS's "60 Minutes" that they would not fly the jet any more. One of the reasons they gave was that there is a problem with the carbon filter built into their mask to help remove contaminants from the air they breathe.
Wyman said that "a black dust was noted in some of the breathing hoses near the filters. We analyzed this dust and found it to be activated carbon."
But no activated carbon was found in "30 pilots who had their throat swabbed for testing."
Activated carbon is an inert form of charcoal that has been used in air filters for years.
Nonetheless, the Air Force has decided to remove carbon filters from the F-22 pilot masks.
The Air Force said Tuesday that no disciplinary action will be taken against the pilots for taking their concerns to "60 Minutes."

Something is broken besides the F22. Each service has a hazard reporting system that lets anyone take suspected threats right to the (Pentagon-level) top. If that very-protected route was doing its job, these pilots would never have taken the risk of going to 60 Minutes.

'One in six cancers worldwide are caused by infection'
By Michelle Roberts
Health editor, BBC News online
One in six cancers - two million a year globally - are caused by largely treatable or preventable infections, new estimates suggest. The Lancet Oncology review, which looked at incidence rates for 27 cancers in 184 countries, found four main infections are responsible.
These four - human papillomaviruses, Helicobacter pylori and hepatitis B and C viruses - account for 1.9m cases of cervical, gut and liver cancers.
Most cases are in the developing world.
The team from the International Agency for Research on Cancer in France says more efforts are needed to tackle these avoidable cases and recognise cancer as a communicable disease.
214 | Gretchen G.Tiger Thu, May 10, 2012 3:06:00am |
More men 'have oral cancer virus'
Oral human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is more common among men than women, leading to an increased risk for men of head and neck cancers, a US study suggests. The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) study assessed around 5,500 people aged 14 to 69.
Around 10% of men had oral HPV, compared with 3.6% of women.
HPV causes the majority of cervical cancers, as well as genital and anal - and head and neck cancers.
Smoking and drinking are significant known risk factors for head and neck cancers. But oral HPV infection increases cancer risk by around 50%, according to the research team from Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center
I predict this will be on Fox News as a reason to not allow gay marriage.

One of the major arguments of social conservatives for marriage inequality is about the old age of the traditional view of marriage. That guy seems to want to mirror that argument about length of time and turn it around in liberals' favor. Not that I agree with his methods or even with the merit of the argument. I think it's an overly simplistic assumption about conservatives's stance being that old automatically means good.

It's a matter of perspective. To him, as a gay Catholic, it was important since if the Church's attitude has once been benevolent, it may become such again, and moreover it could be argued to be the more traditional one.
On the other hand even without various critiques the thesis is rather improbable given both testaments' condemnation of homosexuality.

I think the most revealing argument from history against any specifc exclusionary stance on marriage from a christian POV is that the early church did not even bother to define liturgical standards on marriage. I used to know this more precisely, but I am pretty sure the church only defined their own standards on marriage relatively late.

The subpriming of commodities
The logic is simple. If by leveraging housing stock — using the stock as collateral — the process of mortgage securitisation encouraged subprime lending to people who (arguably) couldn’t afford them, could leveraging commodities in the same way be encouraging equally uncouth lending practices?
Leave the massive commodity operators aside for a minute — though, that’s not to say they are not being impacted — and consider smaller corporate entities that utilise commodities in their daily manufacturing processes.
It’s always been common practice for commodity inventory to be financed by banks by being pledged as security for the loans in question.
The problem comes if such enterprises, instead of using the inventory for general business purposes, are encouraged to stockpile for the sole purpose of liquidity provision and the opportunity to punt on the underlying commodities themselves. It’s a process which arguably artificially pumps up demand for the underlying inventory.
Bundle all those loans together, meanwhile — ideally into a product that can be sold to buyside investors seeking exposure to commodities — and suddenly you’ve got a direct source of funding for an ever-more speculative game.
When it comes to the larger players, meanwhile, this arguably transcends ‘trade finance’ even further — especially if it involves the setting up of a large number of special purpose vehicles to accomplish the process.

Well, the condemnation in the New Testament comes from an apostle, not Christ-- for Christocentric Christians, that's important.
By the way, I don't know if you noticed on the old threads, but I've been looking into the Mormon polygamy issue for a bit since I realized I don't really know much about it, and I found that, theologically, they've never rejected polygamy, they've just said that the law of the land needs to be followed is an overriding commandment. I may still be wrong on this, there may be later theological work, but certainly at the time the issue was being resolved they didn't reject the practice spiritually, only because it conflicted with the law.
The interesting bit about this to me is that it's another occasion where Mormons, through being honest, actually reveal a problem in many religious outlooks. Just like their practice of offering baptism to the dead gets many outraged when, to me, it's a kinder and gentler thing than the theology of many religions that those same dead are damned to hell for all eternity or, if they're not, accepted God after their death, part of their theological backing of polygamy is based on the concept of marriage persisting into the afterlife.
Most religions have a tough time with marriage and the afterlife. The standard Catholic position is that marriage is unimportant in the afterlife, probably because there's no sex, but I'd dare say the average Catholic probably feels differently. I don't think most people are really okay with the idea of a totally sexless eternity. Maybe that's just me.

It is also how one reads and views the Bible: if you are aliteralist who believes that the Scriptures were dictated by God and merely written down by human hands, then there is no question.
But if you take the historical-critical approach and look on the Scriptures as being inspired by God but written by people in a particular social and historical context, then one can advance the argument that our understanding of the nature of homosexuality (and insanity and witchcraft, miracles and other "supernatural" events etc.) has changed over the years, as must any interpretation of the Scriptures.

I don't think most people are really okay with the idea of a totally sexless eternity. Maybe that's just me.
Mormons don't reject polygamy as immoral. The whole thrust of D&C 132 was that you can't enter in the highest levels of the Celestial kingdom outside of the plural marriage (i.e. monogamy wouldn't do). So only the practice has been revoked, but not the principle.
Interestingly, Book of Mormon itself is anti-polygamy (which is why RLDS could take a principled stand against it early on).
What always puzzled me about the continuation of families in the afterlife is that in LDS view we are all children of God and literal brothers and sisters. Which kinda makes it awkward when your spouse(s) are your siblings, and so are your children.

Brilliant stuff. One of the reports recalls a '50s SF story in which big game hunters were allowed to travel back on time safaris to bag a T.Rex. The guides were very careful to permit slug impact only at the dino's moment of 'natural' death. It worked until a falling dino crushed a butterfly in a critical path.

This should correspond to the current view (the Mormon concept of what constitutes doctrine is pretty incoherent and is tied to current prophets, but McConkie is usually seen as authoritative):
[Link: www.lightplanet.com...]
A key passage:
At that time conditions were such that the Lord by revelation withdrew the command to continue the practice, and President Wilford Woodruff issued the Manifesto directing that it cease. (Discourses of Wilford Woodruff, pp. 213-218.) Obviously the holy practice will commence again after the Second Coming of the Son of Man and the ushering in of the millennium. (Isa. 4.)
So Romney's 1 man - 1 woman insistence does not tell the full story.

I think that's pretty good. If 2 people (or 3, or 4..) want to get together and form their own contractual union then the only role for a bureaucrat would be to referee any contract dispute, not to decide if they were entitled to form the union in the first place.
But, since I'm not going to get my way on that one (govt is never going to get out of the marriage business), the last resort is the 14th Amendment which I believe is the tact Ted Olsen took in CA. I'm all for allowing the states to decide as many issues as possible amongst themselves but in this case I'm having a hard time seeing how the bans get around the equal protections clause.

my case in point was the morning I came into the graphics agecny I used to work at in Frankfurt.

A Bipartisan Coalition of House Members Tried to Defund Obama's Medical Marijuana Raids Yesterday, Failed
[Link: reason.com...]
Yesterday, 163 members of the House of Representatives voted to defund federal raids on medical marijuana where the plant is legal under state law. The amendment was sponsored by three California congressmen—Dana Rohrabacher (R), Tom McClintock (R), Sam Farr (D)—and New York's Maurice Hinchey (D), and was tacked on to Fiscal Year 2013 Commerce, Justice, State Appropriations bill. The amendment, which failed yesterday 163-262, reads as follows:
None of the funds made available in this Act to the Department of Justice may be used, with respect to the States of Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington, to prevent such States from implementing their own State laws that authorize the use, distribution, possession, or cultivation of medical marijuana.
Seventy-three percent of Democrats supported the amendment, but only 29 House Republicans.
They only need 100 more votes! It's that close...

Study finds NYPD frisks young black men too often
[Link: www.reuters.com...]
The New York Police Department performed more frisk searches of young black men in 2011 than the total number of young black men living in New York City, according to a new analysis of the department's controversial stop and frisk program.
The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU), a prominent rights group, charged on Wednesday that the program disproportionately targets minorities, particularly young black and Latino men.
Last year the department performed 168,126 on-the-spot searches of black men aged 14 to 24 out of a total population of 158,406, according to an NYCLU analysis of departmental statistics.
The total number of police stops rose from 160,851 in 2003, one year after Mayor Michael Bloomberg took office, to 685,724 in 2011, with only a slight increase in recovered illegal firearms. About 53 percent of those stops resulted in physical searches, according to the NYCLU.

Drugs are weird. Morphine makes me feel crazy but euphoric, my eyes scratch and burn, and I say insane things. Hydromorphone, which is 8 times stronger than morphine, just makes me feel calm, not at all euphoric. But given that so many patients are drug-seeking, the one time I told that to a doctor during this bizarre esophageal pain episode, he said "Yeah, right" and gave me morphine anyway.
I feel bad for docs having to deal with so many drug-seekers, but it makes those of us with unusual responses to painkillers suffer.

Heh. Even ordinary painkillers, like ibuprofen, in a large dose, have a big effect on me: they make me all sentimental, and I get out "Where the Red Fern Grows" and read it while weeping.
Heh..Son 1 went to our ER recently thinking he was throwing a stone. He was inexperienced enough to tell the triage nurse that he really needed pain meds. He sat there ignored for 3 hrs, felt better, and went home.

Hola Lizards! It looks like the GOP are bound and determined to make friends today:
Republicans To FBI: Put Those Anti-Muslim Materials Back!
A few Republican members of Congress would really like the FBI to stop coddling Muslims.
Right-wing blogs have been complaining for months about the FBI’s decision to purge less than one percent of their counterterrorism training materials which a review found contained inaccurate, and often inflammatory information about Islam. On Wednesday, a few members of Congress joined the fight to get that biased information reinstated.
Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) demanded that FBI Director Robert Mueller turn over the names of the subject experts the FBI used to review their counterterrorism training materials. Rep. Howard Cobel (R-NC) also suggested the Obama administration was forcing the FBI to get rid of materials because of political correctness.
Their remarks followed Rep. Allen West’s comment last month which suggested the FBI was committing “cultural suicide” and letting the Muslim Brotherhood influence policy.

Good morning! Did anyone happen to catch the Los Angeles episode of Baggage Battles on Travel Channel last night? 2 months ago they came to the gold refinery I work for and we refined gold for them on camera. Last night that episode aired. Fun people to work with too.
This episode of American Chopper was filmed at a bio-diesel plant down the street from me in IN. About 10 seconds in you can see one of my friends (and former employee) in the background (on the left, wearing the lighter colored ball cap).
Shortly after the filming the company went belly up....oops. By the time they did the bike reveal the company had filed for bankruptcy. They did the reveal in FL.

Thanks for asking. No update apart from some details about tests to be done in two weeks. Right now it's all about pulling together and the waiting for results. One of my fabricator friends hates American Chopper with a passion that will never die. He says the only one of 'em he thinks is a real artist/craftsman/fabricator is Rick, for his hand-made gas-tanks. The others he just says are assembly guys doing a little bedazzling afterwards, ordering front ends and frames and engines and just slotting it all together with a few tweaks.

Your friend is right. I originally liked it because they started off doing the same type of work we did, handrails. I've noticed we even had the same type of mandril tube benders. OTOH, as they gained fame and could afford better equipment they did start to fab their own frames and accessories. A couple of years ago I would have killed to be able to afford their waterjet cutter.
I stopped watching the show years ago. I can't stand bickering IRL, don't know why people want to watch that kind of shit on tv. I do a lot of business with a friends business, a family joint, and they all act the same way as the Tuttles. Always fighting. The old man of the family once pulled a gun on his son in the middle of the shop and one of the sons used their million dollar (no exaggeration) laser cutter to fab a stainless steel meth lab that took the cops a week to take apart.

House GOP added a pair of anti-gay-service-member provisions to the annual defense authorization bill:
[Link: www.stripes.com...]
Conservative lawmakers on Wednesday night added a pair of amendments to the annual defense authorization bill designed to offer more protection to those who oppose gay troops serving openly in the military. The first would bar any same-sex wedding ceremonies on military facilities, while the second would prohibit commanders from punishing chaplains for views against homosexuality.
Last year, defense officials ruled that private same-sex weddings could take place on military facilities, but chaplains could not be forced to perform such ceremonies. In addition, military officials have insisted that the “don’t ask, don’t tell” repeal has not had any adverse effects on chaplains or troops with religious convictions.
Similar measures were approved by committee Republicans last year, only to fail when they reached the Senate. But supporters said the measures are necessary to protect troops’ religious freedoms and free speech, especially since last September’s repeal.
“The president has repealed ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ and he is now using the military as props to promote the gay agenda,” said Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo., who sponsored the chaplains’ amendment. “This amendment is necessary.”
...
Akin said he has received reports of Christian chaplains disciplined and forcibly reassigned because of opposition to openly gay troops, although rights groups have questioned the authenticity of those anecdotal reports.
Both measures were approved largely along party lines. Palazzo’s amendment passed 37-24, while Akin’s measure on chaplains passed by a 36-25 vote.
The House Armed Services Committee passed the full defense authorization bill early Thursday morning.
... Opponents of the protection amendments said they expected the Senate to once again block the proposals.
In related news, they also added an amendment to the Commerce-Justice-Science appropriations bill reaffirming DOMA last night:
[Link: www.washingtonblade.com...]
The U.S. House voted late Wednesday night in favor of a measure that aims to stop the Obama administration from taking any action in violation of the Defense of Marriage Act — even though the administration continues to enforce the law.
In a 245-171 vote, House lawmakers approved the amendment, introduced by freshman Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kansas), as part of Commerce-Justice-Science appropriations legislation. The amendment reads, “None of the funds made available under this Act, may be used in contravention of the Defense of Marriage Act.”
Ian Thompson, legislative representative for the American Civil Liberties Union, said the amendment in effect does nothing because although the Justice Department is no longer defending DOMA in court, the Obama administration is still enforcing it.
...
Huelskamp reportedly said he introduced the amendment not only because the Justice Department stopped defending DOMA in court, but also because of Vice President Joe Biden’s endorsement of same-sex marriage Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Are people really that fearful that gay marriages will destroy society and life as we know it?
I know, it's a rhetorical question. It's not just fear, but centuries of religious dogma pushing back even though this country is predicated upon equal protection and equal rights.
The issue of gay marriage isn't only about gay marriage. It's about a whole series of related issues - health care and insurance benefits, tax treatment (singles versus married filing jointly), acting as health care proxy, access to health records of the spouse, inheritances, etc.
But those who are yammering loudest about the President's declaration of support for gay marriage don't realize how hypocritical they sound when they're coming off multiple failed marriages.
If you're already married - how exactly does gay marriage interfere with that? It doesn't.
If you're planning on getting married, some other couple's gay marriage isn't going to affect your marriage plans either (unless you're both trying to get married at the same place on the same day - in which case, you better put that deposit down on the catering hall now).
Marriage is a bond between two people. It isn't affecting your rights to get married if you're a heterosexual. You'll still have those rights (along with the right to get divorced - as nearly half of all marriages do these days).

U.S. Military Taught Officers: Use ‘Hiroshima’ Tactics for ‘Total War’ on Islam
The U.S. military taught its future leaders that a “total war” against the world’s 1.4 billion Muslims would be necessary to protect America from Islamic terrorists, according to documents obtained by Danger Room. Among the options considered for that conflict: using the lessons of “Hiroshima” to wipe out whole cities at once, targeting the “civilian population wherever necessary.”
...
International laws protecting civilians in wartime are “no longer relevant,” Dooley continues. And that opens the possibility of applying “the historical precedents of Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima, Nagasaki” to Islam’s holiest cities, and bringing about “Mecca and Medina['s] destruction.”

These people seem to have zero empathy. Nuking Mecca or Medina is not going to win a war. It's simply going to cast said war in concrete for eternity. Which unfortunately is what I think these people want. Force the United States into full-on imperial mode by getting it to carry out some irreversible acts.
Have not learned a thing from the Iraq invasion. If someone invaded Arizona to liberate it they would be resisted simply from nationalist pride. Or simply the continual religious agitation if someone bombed (not to mention nuked) Jerusalem. GAH.

The latter is not surprising. Lots of contingency and mental exercises with fairly bizarre scenarios. I recall that some of the War Plans between WW1 and WW2 even included potential wars with England, France, etc.

The latter is not surprising. Lots of contingency and mental exercises with fairly bizarre scenarios. I recall that some of the War Plans between WW1 and WW2 even included potential wars with England, France, etc.
Hopefully this was a low-level thing that will be shelved or shredded. And thus just a sort of outrageous outrage thing that will be moved on from.

They arrested another scumbag in Florida...
11th suspect arrested in alleged attack plot in Brevard by white supremacists
A dozen alleged white supremacists, including six current and former Brevard County residents, face hate crime and criminal conspiracy charges stemming from an alleged plot to attack a rival, anti-racism group at a rally they expected to happen in downtown Melbourne.
Authorities have arrested another alleged white supremacist in connection with the case broken this week by the FBI's counter terrorism task force and local police, and they're still searching for a 12th suspect who is from Palm Bay.
And, authorities allege in court documents that the leaders of the militia-style American Front group aspired to far bigger and more sinister plots. A former Brevard County resident identified as the group’s ringleader was attempting to make ricin, a deadly toxin that is categorized by the government as a weapon of mass destruction, and “has been planning and preparing the AF for what he believes to be an inevitable race war.”
The investigators — led by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) in partnership with local law enforcement agencies — say that American Front was led in Central Florida by former Canaveral Groves resident Marcus Faella, 39, who allegedly transformed a remote property in rural St. Cloud into a fortified compound in preparation for the failure of the United States government.

Top Romney Adviser: We’ll Campaign On Constitutional Marriage Ban
Ed Gillespie, senior adviser to Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign, told Chuck Todd on MSNBC’s Daily Rundown that the campaign would make President Obama’s support for marriage equality an issue this November and that Romney will actively push for a constitutional amendment to take away the right of states to voluntarily extend marriage equality to same-sex couples.
Gillespie told Todd that same-sex marriage “will be another bright-line difference in this campaign.” He added that the GOP intends to campaign on the issue.

Today's the Worst Day for Mitt Romney's High School Bullying Story to Come Out
ELSPETH REEVE 9:44 AM ET
What would be the worst possible news for Mitt Romney to have to deal with the day after President Obama announced he supports gay marriage? Romney's already had a gay staffer resign because social conservatives were outraged he'd hire an openly gay person. And having a hypothetical family member come out as gay would probably help him seem more compassionate. But one thing that might project an image Romney really wants to avoid -- heartless outmoded anti-gay conservative -- would be a long profile in The Washington Post about how he bullied a gay kid in high school. At the exact moment Romney doesn't want to talk about gay stuff, the Post's Jason Horowitz reports Romney led a gang of boys who singled out a gay kid, held him down while he cried, and cut off the kid's offensively un-hetero hair. No one ever likes a bully, but it's really a bad time to be an anti-gay bully.
Continues.

Toronto Islamic school’s anti-Jewish books came from Iran
TORONTO — A Toronto Islamic school’s teaching materials, which have prompted a police hate crimes investigation because of their portrayal of Jews, were originally published by Iranian organizations, records show.
The passages of the East End Madrassah’s texts that drew the most widespread condemnation are excerpts from two books, including one published by the Al Balagh Foundation in Iran.
The other book, which contrasts Islam with “the Jews and the Nazis,” was published by the Mostazafan Foundation of New York, which the U.S. alleges was a front organization for the Iranian government.
Jewish community groups were disappointed to learn that materials from Iran — whose president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is known for his anti-Semitism, Holocaust denial and threats against Israel — had found their way into Canadian school texts.
“As Canadians, we are deeply troubled at the notion that children in our country are learning from materials published by an organization that, according to the FBI, is directly controlled by the Ayatollahs of Iran,” said David Koschitzky, chair of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs.
Shocka!

indeed, science has proven otherwise. That is a fact. The human body evolved to use s e x as a method of reproduction. Parts of the human body male gays use for s e x were never meant for it, and is unnatural. Unfortunately for you, the vast majority of the population consider it disgusting.
--
Height of liberal hypocrisy:Obama came out in favor of sodomite "marriage," justifying his position by quoting Christ's Golden Rule from the New Testament...
So, it is okay to quote the New Testament and justify a policy by misinterpreting a moral teaching of Christ... but only to support a LIBERAL CAUSE.
Because any conservative who argues for a policy position based on a moral biblical teaching IS SCREAMED DOWN, BASHED, AND INSULTED!!!
--
Liberalism = hypocrisy = mental illness = cognitive dissonanceOur beloved country has been in a moral decline since the 60s when the radical left women, pulled off their bras and burned them and decided to become men haters, and hippies, and Woodstock drug users. We've been in decline ever since. 54 MILLION unborn babies murdered in their abortion mills since the 70s.

I was a flight attendant for 8 years with a major carrier in the US. A lot of us guys were straight and then a few were gay. After working for 8 years and then for the next 10 years remaining friends with some of the gay coworkers, I saw into the lifestyle of the gay community, and it's not what you see on TV!It's not "Will and Grace" or "Modern Family", it's a sexually sick lifestyle. If the media accurately displayed the gay life style "Most Americans" would puke over what they find out.
It is sick, perverted and nasty lifestyle. Four of my coworkers died of aids. It's not some beautiful lifestyle!!
--
Wow! What a shockingly pitiful example of intellectual and moral weakness Obama demonstrated in this "flip-flop".As a middle-age man, Obama has had a lifetime to study and consider the important issues of the day--morality, the Constitution, economics, government operations... He spent years in college and grad school, and then was hired to lecture at a university. And after nearly half a century of education and preparation his core beliefs are so ungrounded in truth and logic that his teen-age children can get him to reverse course?
If Obama's core beliefs are so poorly grounded that a couple kids can get him to do a complete about-face on such a pivotal issue as marriage and family structure, I can only imagine how pathetically weak and ungrounded his arguments are for such values and beliefs as freedom, American exceptionalism, integrity, and hard work.
I didn't hold this man in particularly high regard before. But he's just exposed himself as one of the most intellectually and morally weak men I've ever seen in public life.
No man who is this ridiculously weak in his foundational beliefs is fit to lead a nation, let along the greatest nation on earth. Someone who is this childishly weak in his core beliefs isn’t fit to lead a group of girl scouts. No wonder he doesn't want anyone to see his college transcripts.
--
This is one more act that exposes Obama as a pathetic example of a man, and an empty suit as a leader! And this shameless twist of "values" is a powerful example of how ridiculously weak he is.

Here's another right wing statement from the tweet that Gus posted (emphasis mine):
When President Obama publicly declared his support for same-sex marriage yesterday he was displaying his disdain and disrespect for anyone in this country who believes in Judeo-Christian values. Obama thinks that the same-sex marriage movement is so powerful and that we are so weak that his attack on normal marriage will actually help him win a second term.
I need you to help me show him just how wrong he is. Thirty-one states have voted in favor of normal marriage. Tuesday's vote in North Carolina was a landslide for our side. But if he wins a second term our votes may not matter as his appointed judges overrule us and eventually restrict religious liberty in the process.
I don’t think there is anything else I can say. If we won’t stand up now, when will we? Please give whatever you can to help us defeat Obama and his congressional socialist cronies.

The never ending work of moderate Republican bigots continues:
Republicans Limit Gay And Lesbian Rights In Defense Bill
Hours after President Obama announced his support for same-sex marriage, Republicans in the House took two steps back for gays and lesbians and approved two measures limiting their rights. The amendments, passed in the House Armed Services Committee, would “protects religious freedom of military chaplains and the conscience and moral principals of service members who are opposed to homosexuality” and prohibit same-sex marriages or a “marriage-like ceremony” that involves a same-sex couples “from being held at any military installation or on any property owned, rented or under the control of the Defense Department.” The measures are now part of the House’s $642 billion National Defense Authorization Act...

Obama: Romney Wants To ‘Etch A Sketch’ His Auto Bailout Position
President Obama mocked Mitt Romney on Wednesday for saying he deserves credit for Detroit’s resurgence — despite, to this day, opposing the rescue package that experts and officials across party lines say was responsible.
“I think this is one of his Etch-a-Sketch moments,” a laughing Obama told ABC News in an interview that aired on “Good Morning America” Thursday. “I don’t think anybody takes that seriously. People remember his position, which was, ‘Let’s let Detroit go bankrupt.’ Had we followed his advice at that time, Chrysler would have gone under and we would have lost a million jobs throughout the Midwest.”

U.S. downs test missile with new interceptor
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. forces said they had destroyed a target in the first successful test of the Navy's newest anti-missile interceptor, designed to protect allies from attacks by countries like North Korea and Iran.
A target ballistic missile was downed near Hawaii late on Wednesday by the latest Raytheon Co-built Standard Missile-3 interceptor, the Pentagon's Missile Defense Agency (MDA) said.
The advanced interceptor is key to the next phase of an anti-missile shield being built by the United States in and around Europe.
The United States plans to deploy increasingly capable SM-3 versions up to around 2020 to boost defenses against missiles that could be fired by Iran and North Korea.
"Initial indications are that all components performed as designed," the agency said in an emailed statement.

If womens weren't raising boys to become beta-males we wouldn't have to worry about them wearing the color pink. Raising alpha-males, the way my mother raised me, creates a child that chooses the color intended for his gender as a "natural born alpha-male." Of course now my problem is that I can't find a girlfriend because all womens seem to want is a beta-male. I'd rather die single as an alpha-male then give in to this beta-male gender treachery!!!!

Although the Saudis love giving away books. I met a lady once who distributed copies of the Koran for free--beautiful editions, hardbound--at an interfaith conference. I asked how she could afford to give them away, and she told me that the Saudis distribute them worldwide. Her husband was the imam of a mosque in Germany, so she'd just call the number and say they needed a few boxes for a conference, and they'd arrive free of charge.
She had a few things to say about the Saudis, but, on the other hand, she pointed out, they weren't making any money off her, and look, beautiful Korans.
